I reverted back to a stock EL29 kernel today & then re-rooted using the appropriate sfhub's method. I also formatted my Internal SD Card, or USB Storage as it's called in Settings > Storage, from within the stock ROM. I then wiped & flashed the Blazer ICS ROM. Wanted a fresh start! Finally, I flashed Agat's recovery via Mobile Odin, as I did not want the rogue CWM that was packed with the EL29 rooted kernel using sfhub's method. I then set up my phone as usual, & all seemed normal.
However, when I took a look at my internal SD/USB storage, I noticed the following files! :
efsdev-mmcblk0p1.img
efsbackup.tar.gz
efsdev-mmcblk0p1.img.gz
These were not there when I was transferring the flashable zips for Blazer, Agat, etc, but at some point after flashing the ROM & new recovery, they appeared! I have heard of some ROMs backing up efs when flashing, but I flashed Blazer a few weeks ago & didn't see these files. I didn't install any new apps, just my usual & the only apps I installed that have any real power, although I can't see how they would be of any relevance, are ES File Explorer & TB.
I have absolutely no idea how these file ended up my Internal SD card. Just to avoid confusion, the device has no external sd card, but the internal, or USB storage, is also referred to as an SD card. There seems to be some confusion around the sd cards on the E4GT, so I thought I'd be as clear as possible.
I know little about EFS, but it would seem that at least one is a backup...cause it says "backup":good: Simply, what are these three files & how might they have been created, because I certainly didn't do it. The only major difference with these flashes, was that for the first time, I flashed an ICS kernel from a GB kernel, whereas I initially rooted from stock ICS FF18, not GB EL29. So, perhaps this has something to do with the newly found efs files.
Any insights would be appreciated. Thanks so much!
Try open them in winrar. Might have been created by recovery as a part of the flash process

Thanks for the reply! I wouldn't think it would have been created by Agat's recovery, the recovery to which I flashed, as I have flashed it before & the files were not created. However, I was flashing from Team Rogue's version of CWM, which I have never used before. Could it somehow have been set to back up the efs files upon its removal? Even my question seems like a bit of a stretch, I'm just trying to think of a how this could have happened...
I would think I could remove the files from the internal sd card, but considering that they are efs files, I prefer to do some homework first. I will open them later & have a look, not that that's going to help!
Just back it up to your computer and delete it if it's taking up a lot of space
Sent from my SPH-L710 using Tapatalk 2
So, I finally got around to deleting the efs files on the sd card only to have them automagically reappear! What the !$%&[email protected]? Not sure what's going on! I initially thought it might have have been ES File Explorer's auto back up upon removal of system files, since I just changed those settings before I reverted back to a stock & re-rooted, as I had my apps backed up. This was just a guess, because I have no other answers, but even after deactivating the backup option in ES File Ex, the efs files returned.
Again, I am running Agat recovery w/ Blazer ICS, the exact same set up that I was running. The only difference that I can see with my phone before rerooting & after, is the EL29 Baseband version & a newer version of Agat, 0.5.4 vs 0.5.2.
Also, when I dl'ed the files to my pc & scanned them, one was detected as a decompression bomb, which may mean absolutely nothing...or not...
Anyone have any ideas why these files continue to appear? Thanks!
What third party apps do you have ? This might be the problem.

You can also try a factory reset then delete the folder. If it comes back at that point I have no idea. If it does not. Try adding your apps with data one by one and see what is doing it.

Appreciate the reply but doesn't appear to be app related. Actually, learning that it may be related to Agat recovery v 0.5.4, still waiting on confirmation.

Definitely let us know if it is. I have been on cm9 for a very long time. But if I end up using twiz I would like to know the situation with the efs files. Thanks.

It's kernel related are you agats kernel? Try going to his thread it may have answers.

Should be a script from agats kernel/recovery he uses parts of my kernel and also parts of siyah wich both have such scripts wich backup efs to sdcard if it does not already exists

Ya I believe rujelus blu kuban kernel also does this. Just found it after I flashed that rom.

Agat confirmed that backing up the efs files to the sd is a function of his latest kernels. V 0.5.2 did not perform such a backup but 0.5.4 does. So the change took effect in 0.5.3 or 0.5.4. He just put out 0.6.0 today... I'm under the impression this efs back up feature is still present in this version as well, but I haven't checked.
Took a while, but finally a definitive answer...don't like strange files showing up on my device w/o knowledge of how they got there! Didn't think to ask Agat, as I had been using his recovery for a while, just a different version, which didn't contain this feature. Never thought it might have been added in a newer version.
Appreciate the input folks!

Ok, for starters, I am new to flashing new roms and kernals and such. I've viewed most of the "new? read this first" threads but I guess I'm just not making sense of things? In order to flash another rom, I have to flash a kernal that'll work with it first, right? I just need a little more guidance before I'll fully understand and be able to do this easily.
Off topic, I would like to add that the work you guys do and the time you put into this stuff is absolutely astounding. You don't go unappreciated.

When you flash a rom, the rom will include the kernal as well. To flash a rom, boot into recovery, make a nandroid backup (optional, but safe) then wipe data, wipe cache, wipe dalvik cache. Then flash the rom and reboot ( the first reboot will take a while). The only time you need to flash a kernal, is if you're flashing a custom kernal. My advice, stay away from ics, aosp, and aokp roms until you get the hang of things.
Depending on what rom you're trying to install, I'd check out qbking77's easy to follow tutorials on youtube. Here's a good example:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vu1P...DvjVQa1PpcFMG8vvw1JCMbr-EksEinDfXlSZPXNKiA-w=
He's has many more for different roms, and they're all very easy to follow.
Very nice videos, just watched a few of them to get a better idea. A couple of questions tho, when flashing a new rom, when I wipe data, will that wipe everything in my internal memory? I don't have a memory card right now. And what roms would you guys suggest?

It's recommended to go with a clean install. Use something like Calkulin's FormatAll. You will loose apps/data, therefore it is strongly suggested to use a program like Titanium backup to backup your programs to sd card before installing the ROM. That way once you wipe everything and install the new ROM you will have a clean phone and you can re-install your apps via Ti Backup. Hope this helps.

Yes it does, thank you. But since its just internal memory and not a physical sd card, I could backup with titanium backup and save the backup on my computer, then reinstall after I'm done flashing a new rom? And I'm also curious, can I use mobile odin to do all my flashing?

Ok titanium back up is great for restoring mistakes within the rom you are using but can have some data conflicts switching Between roms. I've found the best thing to do if you have no sd card is to download app backup and contact back up off the market. That will back up your contacts to a file you can upload to your google account later. App back up will save all your apps to a folder, all in apk format so you can easily install them after you flash your rom. Now transfer your your backup folders and any other data you need to saver to your pc. Go to recovery and wipe everything then flash Calkulins format all then flash your rom. Make sure you get in the habit of doing a nandroid backup and backing up your data. I'm backed up with a nandroid and on my PC and a flash drive. Read everything first.

I'm more familiar with my nexus, but my friend has the epic 4g touch for sprint and he needs my assistance in getting CM9 on this. He has a rom on it now, but it sucks and giving him issues. I don't think he has clockwork on it, just an ODIN mode and I'm not too familiar with that.
Can someone lend some insight and help for me to help him do his phone. I need to get CM9 on this guy. Is there a clockwork I can flash? Can you flash at all, or have to use ODIN? I'm not familiar with using ODIN at all. Does it work the same way with putting zips on the sdcard and flashing? Can I even get clockwork, and then flash cm9?
Thank you!
Ok so I found out, he already has agat_recovery trec v0.2.1 on it.....which I guess is clockwork but for this phone. So that's cool. I want to nandroid, but its saying it cannot mount the backup path. I think because we took out his microsd card. Is there anyway we can make it so it mounts to internal rom instead?

I got it, thank you! So just throw on cm9 alpha 6 zip, flash, and call it a day right?

According to this, the E4GT isn't supported by Cyanogen:
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/Samsung
I myself run (and prefer) the stock rooted rom with cwm. That may change one day, but I find that I can customize my setup and software to my satisfaction. In fact, I tried the OTA FF18 (rooted) and didn't like it, especially the fact that Google seems to be more invasive (i.e., auto signing into all google sites with no apparent recourse). I also had wifi LOS on 2 separate E4GTs that required me to turn wifi off and back on every few mins.
I odined back to GB, installed a hack to get rid of the OTA update nag and haven't looked back. I guess I'll wait for the next rollout.
Well, it clearly works at least tho...

I wouldn't flash anything until I had a known good nandroid. In fact, that's the first issue you should address, even if it means making room on the card or getting an external SD card to write it to.

My phone will not boot now. I can get into CWM but cannot restore to a backup because apparently it didn't complete correctly and I get a MD5 mismatch error. No backup, no boot, no joy. <more tears>
My plan of action is to download and install the stock ROM using Odin 3.07, then re-root, and reinstall my apps with Titanium Backup. (Then take a new backup that I'll TEST before making any further changes!! )
Does this sound like the appropriate course of action?
Does anyone have a link to download the stock firmware fast? The samsung-updates-com stock ROM for the SPH-L710 is so slow it timed out on me already.
Thanks.

Also, you can connect your sdcard to your computer through recovery...then just put any rom on there (doesnt have to be stock) and flash it (full wipe), because it seems as though you've corrupted the /system partition in some way since the the phone starts up at all
No need to go back to stock necessarily
Also, I would suggest that you make a backup of your phone as is now...that way when it get it functioning again you can manually restore your apps and data and any tweaks you mightve had in your build.prop or init.d

Why don't you just put into the recovery and wipe your system and just reinstall the rom. All your data will remain.

@CNexus, I tried this as well. I actually tried installing your stock rooted 4.3 rom and it just get's stuck on the splash screen. Any advice?
Try again but perform a full wipe (data, internal storage [if nothing important is there], cache, dalvik cache, and system)
No go. I'm going nuts over here. I know I'm a noob this is probably annoying but I want to thank you for your help. So I tried restoring after doing a full wipe and still get the "md5 mismatch". Then I wiped again and trued installing 4.3 and it stayed on the splash screen for over 20 minutes. Aside from flashing a stock tar file on odin, is there another method to fully restoring the phone to stock?

Hey everyone,
I recently updated to GB27 from GA10 and somehow Nova Prime and Swiftkey were removed from my phone. I visited the Play Store to reinstall them but I get the following error:
Error - Couldn't install on USB storage or SD card.
I'm getting along but it's been a pain in the butt. I've looked all over but can't find a solution. Some posts say to unmount the SD card and others suggest trying to delete a file named "smdl2tmp1" but unmounting the SD doesn't help and the named file doesn't exist. Does anyone have a fix for this? Please! I'm tired of the stock keyboard.

Ok, so I'm having the same issues OP was having, but OP never mentioned whether or not he was rooted. Plus mine seems to be behaving a bit differently, so here goes:
I had flashed a GB27 rooted restore ROM to my phone that I found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2191954. Prior to that I wiped and formatted both the USB storage and the SD Card and everything worked great. Yesterday, I used ROM Toolbox Pro to use the root browser to install Mobile Odin Lite so I could put AGAT trec_0.3.2 on the phone so I could do nandroid backups for security purposes. At this point both ROM Toolbox Pro and NOVA PRIME are installed with no issues. Checked phone a minute ago for a facebook update that woke me up and all of a sudden ROM Toolbox Pro is no longer installed, and neither is Nova Prime. It was just installed less than 24 hours ago and I didn't uninstall it. It still shows in the app drawer. Icons are still in place. But when you tap on them, it says "App isn't installed." I try to re-install from play store, and run into this issue. So not only am I having this issue, but apps that were previously installed are simply "disappearing" and then falling victim to this process. I can't find smdl2tmp1.asec anywhere on the phone with any root browser I download, and simply un-mounting and re-mounting the SD Card doesn't work. I can't un-mount or re-mount the USB Storage, only format. Haven't tried this yet. Rebooting the phone doesn't work. Cleared the Delvik Cache and system cache to no avail. Even tried fixing permissions in the AGAT recovery menu and still nothing. Oh, and it seems to only be affecting the apps I've purchased, none of the free apps on my phone seem to be affected in any way...
I don't quite know which kernel to flash and if there is a rooted stock kernel I can install with Mobile Odin Lite... Links and help would be appreciated, because I've been scouring the web for an hour to find a fix and nothing is working. T_T
I found the kernel in zip form here. You can find it through the forums on this site but the link I am posting is a few pages deep so you don't have to go looking. Anyway, just place the zip on the SD card, reboot into recovery, flash the zip, and reboot the phone. This worked for me and it was like a breath of fresh air after being choked for a week. Good luck!

Good luck!

This just happened to work like a charm, so thanks a bunch!
We actually have source built CWM now, so using stock is no longer needed.

I don't quite understand why you'd want to use a non-stock kernel with a stock ROM... I'm still new-ish to rooting and the things involved, that's for sure. >.>'
Built in tweaks, Overclocking and the reverse, more governors. There are a ton of things.

Ok, so maybe you can answer another question I have that is a bit off of the topic, but:
I just found a setting in the Data Programming mode (##3282#) under the advanced section that states: "LTE Status: LTE: <not set>." What is that about? I thought the phone was WiMax only...?
No idea what it means. It is probably left over files or settings. This phone is WiMax only so those settings will either do nothing or if changed, will mess up your phone.

That's what I figured, just wanted confirmation. Thanks. *tips hat*

So I found out what caused my issues with being unable to install to USB Storage or SD Card. I flashed AGAT_GB27_repack.tar to my device so I could do those nandroid backups... and that has to be what caused the issues because after flashing a stock GB27 kernel to the device it wiped my AGAT recovery tREC_v0.3.2 back to stock recovery... and now the device is functioning perfectly. Could you possibly link me to a kernel that comes built in with some custom recovery so that I can have something like CWM or AGAT, and one that's functioning perfectly by chance? FML. >.>'
Go look in the development forum. We have source built CWM now so that issue is no longer a problem.

I don't know if I'm just blind but all I could find for GB27 was tAGAT + GB27 kernel thing and that resulted in being unable to install to USB or SD Card and made my purchased apps disappear... again. So I had to reflash back to a stock GB27 kernel... I didn't seen any CWM kernels... >.>'

This was all I could find, and I don't know if it's going to work with a stock ROM.

I downloaded the 0.3.0 tar and I'm gonna wait until confirmation that it will work with a stock rooted ROM.

Mobile Odin Lite isn't picking up on the .zip, so how do I install this without a custom recovery?
Install a repack then flash the zip

Ok, I did that and all seems to be well for the moment. I'll keep in touch if apps start disappearing again and if I run into the USB/SD Card errors again. Thanks a lot man, I'd thank your last few posts but I'm only limited to 8 thanks per day... >.>'
Thanks for dealing with my noobishness. :3
I have not tried this yet, but the E4GT is listed under supported devices so here's the linkhttp://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1620255
This could be a very useful tool for us if it works, with our recovery situation... Anybody who uses it please report back and let us know how it works. I just saw this and thought I'd pass it on for somebody with the free time to try it out.
Bump
Looks Kool, dont know when, but ill check it for sure. Shadow_God had a post for something similar, months ago, and I didnt try it. Wont make that mistake again. Thanks RB

I'm testing this now so far;
I downloaded zip file
booted into el29 direct recovery
flashed zip
rebooted
opened Rom toolbox pro
opened terminal emulator
typed su
typed onandroid and it started the backup
will have screenshots when it finished
Screenshots it completed the backup going to reboot and see if it will restore.
Did not restore because I DID NOT SEE THAT THE BOOT IMAGE AND RECOVERY WAS NOT DETECTED ON MY PHONE!!!. If you go to the link posted above by bilgerryan you can download a zip SPECIFIC to your phone that will detect both.
This is where I found the zip for our phones: https://github.com/ameer1234567890/OnlineNandroid/wiki/Supported-Devices

New screenshots this time with boot image and recovery backed up
That failed to restore boot image..going to post in that thread to see what I may be doing wrong

This app works fine on my SGS2. It also works on my friend's SGS3.

Both BOOT and RECOVERY get unmounted when the OS loads, so without the appropriate Samsung patch, it's not going to find them; however, with the patch, it just makes an IMG of the BOOT and RECOVERY partitions rather than try to TAR the files contained therein.

What does that mean, that it will not restore or im doing something wrong? I did download the patch and applied it. Still didn't restore. I wasn't stating that it didn't work just thatvI could not get it to restore the backup I made

Onandroid doesn't restore. It only backs up. That said, if you're looking for troubleshooting help, you need to supply more information (e.g. error messages... CWM or TWRP? What version? Whose recovery?).

*bumping* an only few-months' old thread. I may have fooled with this script briefly on my HTC Droid Eris, but forgot about it until not too long ago.
Over the last few days, the author of the script diagnosed a problem with the patch for the SCH-D710 which caused boot/recovery not to be backed up (again, I suppose). Over time he worked out the issue, fixed it and I just wanted to report that it's working 100% (I tested a restore, too) with Agat63's v1.42F kernel at this time.
I want to donate but there is no way to donate to him, so he has an eBay wish list I plan on taking a look at.
It's great to be able to backup anytime without going to recovery.
Great customer service, too!

Did you try this on AOSP? Or just touchwiz?
If it works on TouchWiz I see no reason it wouldn't on AOSP
I had used it on AOSP before, although I was having it use the TWRP backup then and it worked great then too.
Recently, I've only been running TW though.
