HOX Screen Flicker on 4.0.4 - HTC One X

Im having a screen flickering, where it looks a bit like interference on some images, it happened very slightly over the last few weeks but i didnt think anything of it. Since rooting & installing ARHD I have it more often – Im not sure if its increased or im noticing it more now.
Also ive read alot on XDA about similar probs being software – but there is always a chance its hardware – having only had the phone a month i dont want to have a faulty unit that cant be fixed!
But now my phone is unlocked will i be able to take it for warranty? if i flashed RUU & re-locked bootloader?
Its not bad atm, but im worried it may get worse

the flicker was/is kernel related
try flash another kernel - i was getting some flicker after rooting etc, but am using franco r18 kernel now and haven't seen any so far

Oh that would be good if it's definitely a software fix, its odd that others don't complain from ARHD, is the problem you had, colored lines across the images, or actual back light related, as ive seen this confused?

its not the graphical corruption that everyone somehow thinks is flicker definitely backlight flicker.
i think the reason some don't get it is just the variations in hardware if i'm honest.
the kernel is supposed to 'calibrate' the screen, and after 1-2 weeks on auto brightness the flicker should have completely gone. alternatively use max brightness for a few hours.
the 1.29 (the second 1.29) OTA was supposed to fix this, so it's strange that some are seeing this again with 2.17 ...

Ill try it for a few weeks, :fingers-crossed:.. I just ran the fone on full brightness for 20mins and the phone got real hot - like 53d, that also doesn't seem normal. Might need to try a different ROM.

all i can say, is that afaik arhd is close to stock, and i know the heat was improved in 2.17 - but faux/franco kernel both pretty good with heat. i'm using viper rom, the tweaks just make it something else! it's really good imo.
normally doesn't go above 40c battery temp even when charging. before on old versions i had it overheating when just browsing the web whilst charging, haven't had an overheat message for ages now.
try franco kernel first - i did see some flickering on fauxs kernel when using it.

Updated prob remains

hold on, i'm not sure what im looking at in the picture, do you mean the orange bits? can't tell if its the photo itself thats blurred or if thats the effect you're having with the screen
when i talk of flicker, i mean backlight flicker, as in one of those office lightbulbs, that when they're about to die, they start to flicker, like a strobe light effect. is this what you're getting, or something different?

I thought that you may have meant that. The flicker im talkin about is the green/yellow lines down the image - some people have called it banding.
So far no change in ROMs has fixed it.
There is alot of talk that it is Software related, i'm just worried there is confusion between what i have and the back lighting issue... Id like to know if its hardware.

ok i see now what you mean in the picture, the bit just slightly left from the middle?
and is that corruption even on the htc startup screens/bootloader etc?

Yeah just the vertical thin greenish lines, it only effects about 2% of complex rich colored images with varying severity, the example being the worst. And most of three time is only when I'm touching the screen.
So not a massive problem atm, but I just want to know if three a fix and it won't get worst.

to be honest, after the re flashing etc etc, it sounds like it could well be hardware, maybe a bad connection to the screen. its hard to say.
feel free to put up a link to the image and i'll test on mine, but i don't expect to see any issues of course.
it's probably worth having a chat with htc about it, they'll probably say to send it for repair imo

yeah, thats what i was worried about - now that the phones unlocked they will probly wont accept under warranty even though its hardware.
You reckon if i relock bootloader & RUU original ROM they would take it under warranty??
Here is the worst offending image, its just album art off spotify. there are heaps of other images that produce similar effects - but not as bad, and it usually settles within a second.

Are you from uk? If not, start looking up the consumer laws relevant to where you live, lemme know as well ill see what I can find
Re locking and all that hardly makes a difference imo, it might help for the luck factor in hoping the technician won't notice, but if they want to look, they'll see it straight away because of the re locked bit
Anyway if you're from uk its a lot easier because the onus is on Htc to prove you caused the fault (if the problem has occurred within 6 months of purchase)

Im from Australia, I really dont think I will take it in unless it gets worse..
Kind of sux concidering its only a month old, but its really not bad atm.
Im not willing to get charged a repair fee for it unless it occurs more frequently.
My next step is to try a jelly bean ROM as it will be a totally different kernel, just in case :fingers-crossed:

Screen Flicker issues: Possible Statement?

allright guys. After reading the whole thread i see this is truely crazy how much people have this probem. Yesterday i got my second one. And with my second one i have the same issues...I am pretty sure it is a software related issue:
OR
The phone's kernel is ****ed up (battery issues, bad voltage on screen)
OR
there is something wrong with the G-sensor:
Go to your screen settings, and on the bottom of the you can calibrate your G-sensor. When you do this, you see both of the green dots go insane like the screen do!
What do you think guys?
The green dots don't go insane on mine, just slightly up and down. I was waiting for something a little more interesting hehehe

Why? I'm just trying to make a statement on this problem. And try to solve this. Monday i get my third HTC One X. The first X, suffer from screen flickering, mostly on greyish fields the second one, has it too. Both HT23 devices. Both problems.
Personally i'm studying IT, so i only try to get a possible statement with the knowledge i have, and with the custom ROM flash knowledge i have during very very much flashings with my Galaxy S.
I'm just trying to get a possible solution. Is this software or hardware? I dont' know for sure. Maybe Paul O Brien can say something about this problem. I'm out of thoughts.
We don't know, some phones have it some don't. Nothing indicating any differences between phones that have it and phones that don't.
Difficult to tell at this stage. We need a brave soul to check for loose connections but I bet no one will tear their HOX apart to find out.
Knock on wood my second one has no screen strobing as of yet 1 day old so far.
Keep replacing until you get one that doesn't flicker is the only solution for the time being.

What we need is HTC to pull their finger out of their arse, and rip one apart that was sent back doa, and then tell us what it is, tbh they probably are doing this, but need more samples of the problem to be 100% sure of it

HOW TO FIX ICS!!!
My goodness, I must have been pretty irked to have made this thread from phone... where I couldn't even see the difference in sizes..
I hope the sarcasm was obvious enough that people aren't setting everything to the settings in the pictures...
I was pointing attempting to point out that, by default your settings are in kill-the-crap-out-of-battery mode and that a few simple adjustments
easily got me 4 hours of screen-on time.. and you guys aren't me (definitely not proud of this addiction).. you'd probably get 4-5 off the jump with a clean install followed by turning off the nonsense.
Seriously... I am appointing myself PhD... nay, Pharmacist ... If you have problems with your stock build, Pm me, with reasonable detail describing the issue.
I am definitely going to regret this and will probably throw in the towel after a while.. but for the love of (insert special individual or super deity) please stop making new threads (yes.. Like this one... jerk..) about the same tired things..
If you do it just to talk with one another fine... but recognize appreciate that you have been offered a chance to fix your issues instead of scoffing at someone
likely participated in the actual bug finding and squashing process.
There is no ICS bug that I have been made aware of that is actually on every release candidate. If you have had the same problem, on every build... which are in some
cases very different from one another... then let's examine the variables.. then let's read this

@Phaker
If you want to layer on top of what you did for even more performance + battery like you can grab tegrak (I know you got pay for it but worth it) switch governer to wheatley (assuming you have the latest TM Kernel installed) undervolt each step to -50mah (-75mah at each step works for me but can be unstable for other -50mah seems to be pretty universal) THEN overclock to 1.252ghz (let your ROM settle and do some usage tests) if 1.252 hold (which it should) push to 1.3ghz. Also for wifi go to setting advanced and set your sleep policy to either Never or Only when plugged in.
This is what I personally did that seems to fix all my major issues as far as huge battery drain. Finally allowing me device to go into a deep sleep and leave wifi on plus killer battery life & performance. And I am not running any custom scripts or anything......
SIDE NOTE:
After applying all these settings I left my phone off the charger last night. Went to bed with 95% battery. (mind you all my sync and even location services + maps everything is on) woke up 8 hour later and was down to 91% now that is some sexy deep sleepage and killer battery drain. This is what I would expect to see.
I try not to advertise when possible when I'm on here.
Just a preference, and I have exceptions.
Chainfires one example. I think we all owe him an app or two.. (I paid for 6 lmao only use 2)

Hox screen becomes unresponsive in middle part.

Hey,
i noticed some strange behaviour of my hox screen. From time to time the screen won't respond in the middle part. Also it just freezes and I have to turn the screen off and it works again but middle part is still unresponsive. All over sudden the middle part would work again. I was using eternityprojects kernel 3.4 v0.62. All was working fine until yesterday. Flashed everything again from scratch ( viperX 2.2.1 + stock kernel + fullwipe) but still the same.
Anyone got a clue on this? Thx!

Send for replacement, this is becoming more common.
I'm not particularly sure of the cause, but a few people have recently said parts of their screen became un-responsive.

There are probably many factors that could affect this; temperature, rate of change of temperature, phase of the.moon .
Flash the stock RUU for your device, if that doesn't fix it, off to repair.

Now that confuses me.
I've seen one where it only becomes unresponsive on the 3 Dot menu bar etc.
Which is making me start to think its more software related than first thought.
I would keep your stock kernel for now, as that will not make a difference.
Also, although ViperX looks to be an amazing rom (im not yet rooting my HOX) I would try an alternative like ARHD or Leedroid etc.
Also try a factory reset.
If non of these fix the problem, then I say it must be hardware, and go get it replaced/fixed.

Also, although ViperX looks to be an amazing rom (im not yet rooting my HOX) I would try an alternative like ARHD or Leedroid etc.
Also try a factory reset.
If non of these fix the problem, then I say it must be hardware, and go get it replaced/fixed.

Well tried another kernel and still the same, might wait for the whole 2.2.1 viperX Rom and try again. If it persist ill try another Rom. Possible that it could be related to any script like supercharger v6 etc.?

Happens when charging and not charging.
Sent from my HTC One X using xda premium
hmm. i had a similar problem, but only when charging, but it was the whole screen. and it was only when charging at home, from the mains, not from usb etc.
then i sent it off for repair for different things. when i got it back, i updated, and later that evening, i tested the screen problem. doesn't happen anymore.
although i then rooted etc and installed viperx 221. plugged in a different htc charger at home, and the problem started happening again. normal charger it doesn't happen, or at least not yet.
all of the above makes me think that software can resolve this problem, and that it isn't hardware. but it is hard to make that decision.
hopefully the above helps. don't really have a solution, just the fact that different rom/kernel *could* make a difference.
the main cause/environmental difference i believe causes this, is excess noise on the mains power supply in your house/work
the problem you're having obviously is different though.. tricky one

how I fixed this problem.
I know this is an old thread but I just faced this problem, my HOX is one from India that I got from Amazon.. and initially was working perfect, then I faced this issue after testing new roms, wiping, and pretty much everything you can imagine was tested...
I did one las thing cause HTC told me that I needed to send this phone to INDIA to have it repaired...
I asked my provider for a new SIM card... and that FIXED my problem...
Hope you guys have the same luck.

Is any current ROM a fix for pink/purple fix for camera in low light and dark shots

So heading says it all, did you have the issue before you installed it and did the ROM fix the issue? I've done the low ISO, I missed around with the settings and it does not fix or make it at all better. I will not settle for a replacement device that is not brand new so I am looking for a software fix. I figure a ROM made from a developer phone would fix it since their software is not affected by this issue. So let me know if you have an answer for this. The key has to be that you had the issue before you installed the ROM. Don't trash the tread with junk or speculations of what might fix it I am only interested in facts at this point I've done all the Google might fix and none did....reply away!

So I read an article on engadget that said the 4.3 update made improvements to the camera in low light settings. I was previously avoiding 4.3/5.5 ROMs because you can't change the lock screen image independently of the home screen. Anyhow, I flashed it last night and have been snapping away with the camera. The pictures seem better.
It's a shame, other than the camera this phone is nearly perfect.

I don't know, it seems better but I don't have an objective way to measure it. I know that previously my newborn son's face always looked purple in low light pictures and now his skin looks more true to his natural color.
Also, over exposure doesn't seem as bad.

So when you use a 4.3 sense rom found in the forums, like the one I'm running which is the NuSense 4.3 RC5, it seems like its "fixed" but what actually happens when you put your hand over the lens is that the blue hue or red will show up, but as soon as the phone detects the hue it goes away. It seems to keep doing it in a repetitive pattern.Hue shows up, then goes away, then shows up again, then away, unlike before on 4.2 where if it shows up, it'll stay there.
My guess is that on 4.2.2 like others have said, when the ISO is raised too far, the hue showed up. So really, it seems like HTC just gave the a camera a limit to not raise the ISO too far.
It's "sorta" (not really) fixed. It's a hardware issue that's been somewhat softened by software implementations.
Sounds about exactly right for what can be done. The low-light picture taking is really a hard thing to accomplish, me thinks. I have a Canon DSLR, and fast lenses are expensive (apart from prime lenses), so I'm not surprised that this overprmised technology is not meeting expectation. That said, do people really use their camera phones that heavily? I don't. And it certainly wasn't a feature I considered when buying this phone. Not to knock any enthusiasts, but this defect has made me realize how many folks are satisfied with phone camera fidelity.
For any of you interested in photography. $50 spent on a 50mm prime will blow your brains out, expectation-wise.

I use my camera as a camera not as some sort of blue noise detection meter. If the hue is gone from my pics and the ISO isn't so high that there is a bunch of color noise then I'm happy and for all practical uses I'd say it's pretty well fixed.
I tried putting my hand over the lens, after about 90s it started turning kinda blue around the edges then would fade to black. Better than before.

The problem with it still is that because it fades in and out, if you take the picture at the wrong time, the hue will be in the picture. That means you have to time when to take the picture, which I'm sure to many is absolutely not fixed. It's still got much room to improve.
Sent from my HTC6500LVW using Tapatalk
Over in the regular HTC one forum someone posted a video of a HTC one running kit Kat and the person had the phone laying down on a table. When he got to the camera the screen stayed black and their was no purple haze going in and out. So I hope it does fix it and look forward to a kit Kat Rom for our phones.

I can tell you this with certainty.. if you tell HTC you need a repair to take care of a camera issue, they will accept it as a legit reason for service. I told them my camera was showing the red/blue and having trouble changing a focal point once it caught one. They tried talking me into waiting for 4.3. I refused. They opened a service order, I sent it out, about a week later I had my same phone back with none of the original problems. I don't know if they swapped out the hardware or what the deal is but when I cover the lens it stays pitch black.
Yes, it hurts being without a phone for a week but it's better than living with a phone that disappoints you for some reason. And especially when that reason can be remedied.

Yes, I did return it to stock before sending it in. I don't know that I needed to, but I wasn't going to take a chance on them refusing to do the work because they didn't like my icons or zooper widgets. =)
I used this thread here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2475216
Just to update this thread I did end up sending my phone to HTC to get repaired it was a one week turn around and came back same phone and fixed. Getting my phone repaired was a big deal since I don't want a CLN or Refrib device. So phone is fixed!

Just to give an update, the new stock 4.4 gpe rom does a better job of preventing the blue/red noise from appearing. When I cover my hand it appears for half a second then is completely black for the rest of the time
Sent from my HTC6500LVW using Tapatalk
I'm a crack flasher so I flash just about every ROM released just to give it a go and I have to have a ROM (4.2.2, 4.3 or 4.4) that has remedied the issue. HTC swears up and down that there is a camera update coming with 4.3 but seeing as how AT&T and Sprint folks said it helped nothing at all in their forums I'm leaning towards a hardware issue. Sucks but we might be stuck with it.

Well unfortunately I can't be without my phone for more than a couple of days. I use it for work and personal. Too bad HTC doesn't have designated repair centers we can take our phones to for repairs of manufacturer defects. HTC should have acknowledged the issue and authorized cell provider stores where the device was purchased to do exchanges after the traditional 30 day exchange was up. I tried to exchange mine at the Verizon store I bought mine at and they wouldn't do it. Said I still had to go through warranty repair. It's understandable on VZW's end bc it isn't their fault HTC shipped jank phones but on the customer service side it makes both companies look bad. Glad yours got fixed though.

It must be subjective bc my hue is still bad but my girlfriend's is semi-okay.

Colors are suddenly dull/washed out

All the colors are suddenly dull/washed out on my S9 and turning off blue filter seems to make them even more washed out, I checked the Red Green and Blue from *#0*# and Red looks more like orange, Green looks very bright and Blue looks more like indigo. I'm not really sure what happened, I haven't changed anything on my phone, it just suddenly happened while I was using it and noticed all the colors are suddenly washed out. Also I seem to have black crush/gradient banding issues now too.
Does anyone know what could've happened? And is this a software calibration issue or a hardware issue and my display is screwed?
I wish I could test this in recovery mode by viewing images and see if they look good there before I try to do a factory reset but I don't think that is possible, or is it?
Thanks!
I've the same issue. It was all fine and then i had august security patch and it seems to hace caused all the trouble. Still looking for a solution as it's impossible to downgrade which is so annoying

I was running Android 8 when this happened and now I tried factory reset and also updated to the latest Android 10, but no change at all and now I also found out that I cannot downgrade anymore as the bootloader is a newer version now. So now I'm stuck with a bad display and the ****ty sluggish and ugly (One UI stupid rounded borders and cheap looking icons) Android 10. Android 8 was a lot smoother, looked a lot better, had better battery life and more features - now we don't have Power saving mode for Location anymore which was a great feature.
So don't bother with downgrading as that will not fix it (if we are indeed having the same problem), this seems like a hardware issue. Maybe still possible Samsung could have caused this with a sneaky background "update" to force us to buy new phones.
Thank you Samsung, I'll be sure to not buy any of your products anymore.
I have the same problem. Noticed also that encryption was disabled just after the update.
Hope there will be some solution.

I don't get it anymore, since I was on Android 8, is this a hardware issue? Or can Samsung still push a sneaky "update" to mess with our screens so we buy new phones? I wonder if this is even legal what they're doing at this point. Maybe we should find out. My phone originally came with Oreo and I was very happy with it, not with this ****ty Android 10 One UI update.

All you guys have discussed above is matched with me. I am suffering this for 2 months with my 2 years old s9+. What can we do, even what is exactly to do right now, don't know. Maybe it is Samsung's business policy, they are forcing their flagship users to buy a new flagship device. Any of Samsung's low budget or mid-budget device doesn't face this kind of problem. My family members are using Samsung devices for more than 5 years.
I just hate Samsung's policy. I am deciding not to buy any kind of Samsung product anymore, and I'll not recommend Samsung products anymore. I am sure if it is their policy they can't go further because people are so much aware now.

So, it seems to be permanently "damaged". All of this seems to be hardware, but maybe still caused by a background update from Samsung to make us buy new phones. For me it happened right under my eyes, while I was using the phone, suddenly some kind of app appeared on my screen, then disappeared and all of the colors changed (it was that big of a difference that I noticed it). So, I tried to reboot thinking it must be some Android bug but it has stayed the same since then. The coincidence is just too much, my screen broke right when some kind of app launched by itself under my eyes and I'm not making any of this up. This really seems like some dodgy background update from Samsung.
I really wish there was a way to verify all of this, but it does seem unlikely that the OLED display broke (exactly the same for all of us) and it still seems pretty capable.

How is it possible that hundreds of users of note 9 and s9 are having the same apparently hardware malfunction starting out at the same time? Most of the users started having this issue around and after March 2020. Really disappointed in samsung.
