Weird WiFi/Data issue - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

So I notice this occuring on Gingerbread, as well as ICS 4.0.4...
I usually have WiFi calling enabled because I use it in my house, and at my office. The problem is when I leave my house or my office while WiFi calling is enabled, it will not switch to data automatically unless I press the power button to show the lock screen. Then the data works fine.
Does this happen to anyone else? Is there a work around?
I have my WiFi set to always be enabled even during sleep.

Try toggling airplane mode instead of rebooting

I never said I had to reboot. I just have to press the power button to wake up the device in order to get service again. It's like it stays stuck in WiFi whether it's connected or not.

Check your advanced wifi options - hit the menu button when in regular wifi options - and see if keep wifi on during sleep is checked. Also maybe the idle timeout length?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-T989 using xda app-developers app

I said it was in sleep mode, should I turn that off? I mean if it's on sleep, then I won't be able to get calls or messages since I'll barely have service in my basement or office...

Not sure, that's why I suggested the time out length. I don't need wifi much, but I've had similar issues coming off the subway with data not coming back immediately. Usually switching airplane mode on and off makes it work.

[Q] Tasker with Epic

Can anyone let me know what kind of awesome things they have going on their rooted Epics with the app Tasker?
The only tasker "task" I have going right now is for my screen to stay on as long as my keyboard is out.
I have quite a few profiles. Normal time based audio profiles for school. It turns airplane mode on and off at reboot to avoid the cell standby bug. Returns GPS coordinates when I send it a secret sms code. Keeps screen on when keyboard is open. Turns wifi on when near my femto cell at home. That's most of my profiles other than the multiple sound profiles. Hope this helps. Let me know if you need any help with contexts or tasks.

Thanks for the replies! I just set up the keyboard, and the device reboot airplane mode on/off. I'm still trying to lock down the near wifi one...I can't seem to get it right yet. I also did the GPS on/off.
If anyone else has some super snazzy profiles please share.

Problems: Wifi keeps turning on and off when screen is off

Hey there,
I'm using S-off and oxygen 2.2 on my rooted desire and I have a big problem:
Always when I press the power button so that the screen goes off and than turn it on again by pressing it again after some time (20 secs or so) I see that wlan is turned off and the cellular data connection is used. Shortly after the screen went on, WLAN is on again. Is this some default behaviour to save battery? Is wlan really more battery comsuming than the providers data connection?
The problem which arises now is: I'm using http://www.appbrain.com/app/unlock-at-home-using-wifi/com.accedo.unlockathome which unlocks in a certain wifi and locks, when going out of whitelisted wifi networks. When I press power to turn off the screen and the wlan is disconnected after some short time, the screen gets locked and somehow I think that the screen gets on shortly after this. This causes the wifi to connect again and than after turning off again the wifi gets disconnected again. Thus after the lock applications locks the screen and thus shows it again... -> infinite loop. every now and than (i think about once a minute) I see the screen go on and quickly after it off again.
how to fix that?
Do you have something like Juice Defender installed?
Check the sleep policy.
Swyped from Oxygen with Transparent XDA App
Set wifi sleep policy to never, under wifi advanced settings.

Nope i havent!
@k3lcior: strangely it's already set to never and though I often see the cellular data icon appear also when I use the phone (e.g. when writing an sms) and directly disappear again there's to be a problem I think with something on my phone!?

[Q] enable airplane mode turns wifi off in 4.2?

i have 2 gnex phones that both just updated to 4.2, and prior to the update, when i turned on airplane mode, cell data would turn off but wifi would be left on.
after the 4.2 update, one phone continues to work that way, with airplane mode on, cell data is turned off but wifi is left on. the other phone, enabling airplane mode turns off both wifi and cell data.
i know that apps are not able to toggle airplane mode anymore (AutoAP) because of security changes but why would airplane mode work differently on 2 phones running the same 4.2 build?
both phones are running stock android, no root, no flashing.
is there a setting i'm missing? was this something in the update that other people are experiencing?
thanks for the help!
Can't you just toggle wifi back on after?

yes, but it immediately shuts wifi back off.
with airplane mode on, i can go to the wifi settings screen, and hit the toggle, it turns on, scans, finds the local wifi, connects and at the same moment it connects the wifi on/off toggle flips back to off.
just seems weird that it is happening with this phone but mine is working as expected...
Then you must go back to 4.1.2 with 4.2 gapps.

any idea why it would work with one 4.2 phone and not the other?
seems odd i'd have to backport one phone but leave the other at 4.2
This happens on my Nexus 4. Airplane mode constantly disables WiFi, no matter what. And yes the app AutoAP doesn't work either.
I have found this app, Airplane Mode Wi-Fi Tool, funny that it was made for Android versions prior to 2.0.
The actual app doesn't seem to work (to enable/disable airplane mode and WiFi), but within the app lies a nifty feature in the Preferences menu under Extras:
Keep Wi-fi On
Wi-fi on Airplane Mode
Check both of those and you should be able to turn Airplane mode on and then keep WiFi on.
Cheers.

im on ARHD 7.0.0 and even in prior versions, when airplane mode was turned on wifi would turn off but it could be turned back on. how come your wifi stays on during the airplane mod transition?
Isn't airplane mode means disable any active radio transmission includes Wi-Fi which is sent and receive data ?
If you just wanna stay off calls why don't you just use automatic redirect incoming calls to voice mail or just simply pull out the sim card?

Airplane mode is supposed to turn wifi off (its a transceiver). However, You can turn it back on while airplane mode is activated and still have the other functions off.
That how airplane mode is supposed to work, thats not a bug, every phone ive had does this

i don't know why, but wifi always has always stayed on when switching to AP mode since i got our Gnex phones in sept. (4.1 i think). wifi even stayed enable when switching to AP mode in my old crappy kin two.
and i think it must be fairly common based upon the instructions in the $30 cell service thread, but i'm no android expert so maybe i'm wrong.

There's a lot of talk about this. Check the [GUIDE] to voip/$30/month plans. But it sounds like google moved it into part of core services or something like that. So none of the autoap type programs work any more. But one member had this suggestion below in that other thread. Gotta buy Tasker, but should be able to get back to working like AutoAP did.
Download Secure Settings. Launch Secure Settings, go over to the Helper tab and install the helper. Then go to Tasker. Go into your task and delete the Airplane Mode radio step and the Airplane mode on step. Then hit the + at the bottom left, go to Plugins, select Secure Settings. Hit edit. Scroll down to "Airplane Mode Radios" and select it, and then select "Cell" from the dropdown. Hit the save button at the bottom left and select the check mark to create the task. Move the task where it needs to be by dragging on the right side up and down. Then create a new task, Plugins, Secure Settings, edit, Airplane mode, on, save button, check mark, move to position. You can figure out the rest. Works perfectly.
Llama works as well, it's free and looks less complicated

keep wifi on in airplane mode
I guess I have figured out how to do it with Tasker or Secure Settings.
Both have two actions like "Airplane Mode" and "Airplane Radios", so the second one doesn't turn off anything, but set, what to control with "Airplane Mode" action. Setting seems to be system wide and permanent (saved after reboot).
Good luck

Wireless Shuts off While Sleep - Causes Issue with Tasker

I have a tasker setting that says when connected to wirelsss ssid @ work is disabled volumes.
However every now and then when in sleep mode I will here it turn volume back on as it disconnects from wireless in sleep mode. When I turn screen on it connects backup and puts vibrate back on.
I looked in the network settings for wireless and it is set to Always be on. So I am not sure what else could be the issue. Anyone have any ideas?
I think I may have found the fix.

I'll let everyone know.
Okay if you are having WiFi issues and it disconnect every 3-4 min here is the fix
Go to phone
On the keypad dial *#0011#
Automatically should go onto a screen
Press menu
Go WiFi
There should be a button there saying WiFi saving and it should be ON turn it OFF
And then reboot
Done
Make sure you leave a thanks if I helped
And I would love to know if this helped
That did not fix it. I heard phone beep that it was coming out of vibrate mode.
So I turned screen on and it went back to vibrate mode. Like the wireless went to sleep again but I didn't catch it as activating on the screen this time. It may have im just not sure.

No auto-connecting to wifi when BT connection lost

Hi there,
after update to MM i'm having following issue. My watch doesn't automatically connect to wifi network when i'm going out of the BT range. It will only connect when i wake up the screen and swipe down the top menu or slide left to the app drawer. It looks like you have to first wake up the watch to trigger the action.
Anyone having the same? It's quite annoying as it happens all the time in my home when i'm going between the floors without my phone with me. Of course, i have wifi adapters on both floors. so it's not a matter of wifi signal strength. As i said, when i "trigger" the reconnection, it will connect to wifi without problems.
Thanks in advance.
Having the same problem. Have had the watch 2 days. Anyone have a solution?
Sent from my SM-N910G using XDA-Developers mobile app
Nobody? I have also restored to defaults and configured once more but the issue still occurs. It starts to be very annoying.
a theory: it's in power save mode. Let it go below 15% battery, find the card about battery saver, turn it off. I think I've seen that power save mode stays on even after charging, and can only be turned off with the card.
Also check your settings under wifi/advanced
Thanks. I also tried to remove some saved wireless networks from the watch and it also helped a bit.
