i have got a red s3 from ATT, but im on tmobile right now suffering 2g speeds and not ready to jump into att service as yet. I've heard of simple mobile and straight talk. which of these would provide me with good 3g/4g speeds, and whose service is better, im in the DC area. and when it says unlimited, is there a cap on it? any help would be appreciated.
simple mobile is tmobile, you want straight talk because you have an att phone.
i think straight talk will disrupt your service if you go over a certain amount of data, but i'm not certain, i don't use the service.

Does anyone have this plan? Im wondering if and when they throttle data, i called st but can't get a straight answer. Right now i get throttled after 5gb, if straight talk gives you at least 5gigs of full speed data it would be well worth switching for me. Just seems too good to be true.

Most likely T-Mobile by the sounds of it.

They don't, common wisdom is that it's more like 2g/mo and 100m/day before ST throttles, but you won't get an answer out of them, ever.

Sounds like im better off sticking with Cincinnati bell

You should look at the prepaid thread in my sig. It details all of the plans and there are lots of testimonials of people using them.
Common wisdom is that the Straight Talk plan caps at 2gb per month (theres no way they could do 5gb data at the $45 price point).
If you want more data you're either going to have to go with the $60 Simple Mobile plan, which gives 5gb+, or the T-Mobile Prepaid plans, 2 of which offer 5gb (then throttle).

so you are sure the simple mobile plan gives 5gb before throttling? Cannot find any definite number on their website just like straight talk. On tmobile/att/cincinnati bell websites it tells you the amount of data used where you will be throttled. At least they are up front about it.

It's not published, but just crowd-sourced that they offer 5GB of data. Many MVNOs choose not to publish whether or not they throttle/cap or at what point.
So after 5gb are you throttled or are there overage fees? Im assuming throttled since it's called unlimited. And simple mobile uses tmobiles network, correct?

My question for anyone using the gnex and ST is, does the phone use T-Mobiles network or atts? I read you can use either a T-Mobile or att phone and was wondering since the gnex is pentaband if you could potentially bounce from one network to the other based on which one had better signal? Thanks in advance guys.

You choose when you start the service whether you're going to get an AT&T SIM or a T-Mobile SIM (they can pick for you based on your zip code, but you can choose manually). You can't bounce back and forth, because the SIM is only provisioned for AT&T towers or T-Mobile towers. There's no roaming between the two.
When you order, its easy to tell. In the cart it will say "AT&T compatible SIM card" or "T-Mobile compatible SIM card".

straight talk is great as long as nothing goes wrong (which luckily is my case)
faster data speed than simple mobile and very good coverage
however their customer service is non-existent
calling them is a waste of time
try their facebook page if you really wanna have something done
much more responsive (they probably won't fix your problem immediately but at least they are responding)

This is true of prepaid carriers. You save money but get no service. I call CS maybe once a year, so I think that's worth saving $40 a month on service.
Has anyone on straight talk At&t sim tried doing a voice call or video call using Google Talk? when I try I get a message saying I need to be connected to a Wi-Fi network. Anyone else getting this?

I am now using my Galaxy Nexus with Straight Talk on the TMO ST SIM card. Overall its great. One thing I've noticed though are the ping times. On ST I can never get a ping better than 300ms using the speedtest.net app. Also several times when I've woken my phone from idle, I notice it says its not in sync with Google services...the bars are grey and not blue. It usually goes blue again within 30 seconds saying it synced. I think it may be related to the ping issue, as I think ST data goes through a proxy before going out over the TMO network to destination. The data speeds themselves seem the same as they were when I was on Tmobile, but I seem to recall being able to get around 100ms pings or less in the same locations when I was on Tmobile.

I have an HTC One X now and I have to jump ship from Simple Mobile as Edge Network is not an option.
Are there any other options besides H2O Wireless? Simple Mobile offered 2GB of Data for $60/month and I am not excited by only getting 500MB of high speed data with H2Os $60/month plan.
Straight talk and red pocket. Some are having trouble getting st to work. My kit is here but I haven't tried yet.
Strait Talk - 4G?
Red Pocket - only 3G?
EDIT: Just found all the appropriate threads and read accordingly. Looks like strait talk is the way to go.
I have straight talk, there sim card you can get at straighttalksim.com runs on either at&t or T-Mobiles network (you can choose) I have the at&t sim and it gets hspa+ and I get 4mbps average in my area the same as post paid att users

Thanks for the input. I am game for Strait Talk...just ordered before I read your reply. Good to see fellow console moders out there with the good devices in hand.
Does anyone have any experience with simple mobile? Looks to be the same thing as straight talk. Just buy a sim and service plan. I'm assuming they are using AT&T and T-Mobile towers just like straight talk.

I haven't, but according to The Thread That Never Dies, they only use T-Mobile's network. The APN listings in their website seem to corroborate that. So, if their signal is too weak for you, as it is for me, then you'll need to go with an AT&T option, like ST. If signal is good, you may as well use T-mobile's $30/mo plan.

Yes, I am using Simple Mobile right now, but I am on the $40 / month 3G plan. My upload / download rates are around 120kbps, so it is pretty slow (Chicago area). Their 4G plan is $60 / month, so I will likely switch over to ST at the end of the month and go with their $45 plan on AT&T. Simple Mobile is T-Mobile, which gives me a good signal where I live and pretty much in every area I have been in so far, but AT&T's coverage is far better. If Simple had a competitive plan to ST I would consider sticking with them, but their 3G plan is just too slow. I am not a heavy data user either, although I will be starting to send my texts via Google Voice so I can send International Texts after I switch to ST.
I do. IT'S HORRIBLE. Data speed wise. Like the guy above me said, I get like 0.02 Mbps down and 0.01 up. I never got higher than 0.04 up or down. It's pathetic really.

Ok first of all the 4g data plan is much faster and just as the t-mobile speeds. I was on SIMPLE for a year and a half and now switched to T-Mobile

First off, that noob video was just awesome. Secondly, I am just scared to even post and ask this question as it seems I screwed the pooch in buying this phone to begin with (bought for 160, on a budget, need for new business).
So, all that said, is there any way to root, rom, flash this phone to get 3g on Straight Talk service? I am getting the At & t sim card, and I have At & t 3g in this area. If this is not do-able, anyone recommend a phone that will get 3g on ST and work with gopayment from Intuit?
Now, I am going to go duck behind a large rock in case anyone starts casting stones or rotten tomato's my way....
I'm pretty sure that using it on another service gets your data throttled to oblivion. I know if you use the inc 2 on att u only get edge speeds..same with T-Mobile. Straight talk uses vzws network... But its like any other prepaid service..u will never get the full speed and use of a network when you are on prepay

I can tell you on tmobiles prepaid tmobiles mnvo that you use the 21mb towers same towers that my s3 connects to...
you defiently see the gig of ram missing from s2 to s3 but not as bad as 512mb to 1gig for sure
straight talk works pretty good and they use the same towers as tmo/at&t in my area.
I use Tmobile.. $60/month plan for unlimited talk and texts, plus 2GB of 4G data.
Data is decent in most areas (los angeles, california), but out in the boonies, my friends with verizon and ATT have better data service. They'll get 3G when I'm on edge or something that's painfully slow. But again, this is pretty much out in the desert. Othewise, it's usually pretty good.. Maybe not as fast as verizon, but for most things it's not noticeable.
voice coverage is pretty good, though I get a few more dropped calls compared to when I was with sprint. But it's not enough to make me switch back, especially for the price.
I'm using Simple Mobile right now. They use T-Mobile towers. If you're area has good coverage by T-Mobile they aren't a bad choice. Frankly I'm waiting for a Straight Talk AT&T sim and would suggest going that route if you are in an area that doesn't have good T-Mobile coverage. Unlocking the hercules is easy and you don't even need a code from T-mobile. There's a thread here for a free unlock and in my experience it works perfectly. Generally speaking and not because I like AT&T I do find they have better coverage in rural/less populated areas.
At&t here and has worked flawless.
