I solved the question this thread was originally about, so I'll turn this into a new issue I've got:
For some odd reason, my SMS messages do not always go through. It would seem that all messages well under the 160 character limit go through just fine, but as soon as I approach or exceed the limit (sending multiple parts), the texts do not get to their destinations at all, despite my phone not reporting any sort of error. Very annoying. Any help would be appreciated. I'm on Paranoidandroid 2.13. THANK YOU!

Hello,
Running Cyanogen CM6 RC1 here. I've been having trouble sending long text messages, which I initially diagnosed as a problem sending MMS.Specifically whenever I tried to send a long text message (longer than 160 chars) it would just hang and say "sending" for like 5 minutes before I get a failure report. Curiously, I had no trouble sending or receiving messages with multimedia content, like images.
After some additional tinkering and web searching, I discovered that MMS was working fine. Rather, my phone is trying to send text messages between 161 and 480 characters as SMS without breaking them apart into the appropriate number of parcels. Above 460, or 3x160, the phone is converting them to MMS and it goes through just fine.
Is there a way to change the threshold before which SMS are converted to MMS? I think all the EVO owners are pretty much on the same plan which gives us unlimited media messaging, therefore there is no point in not sending any SMS over 160 chars as an MMS. Is there a way we could change the threshold to 1? I imagine this is what HTC did in their messenger that was installed with Sense.
*Temporary solution:* If anyone else out there is having this problem, but doesn't have a solution, I have a temporary one. Simply download and use the free Handcent SMS application, and in the settings (settings>send message settings>Split 160) change the value from "Don't split" to "Simple Split". This will automatically break up messages between 161-460 into 2-3 parcels of 160 chars or less.
Handcent i think has those setting parameters.
also, this is a known issue already, and has already been greatly discussed.

Sorry, I was typing an edit as you made the mention about handcent. However, I haven't found the setting that allows you to change the threshold--only to make the message split. Also, it will allow to turn off conversion altogether. Am I not seeing it?
Also, perhaps I'm not so savvy here, but I've been unable to find any solutions on forums or anywhere. If this issue is already very well discussed, any chance you provide me with a link please?
I have this same problem which is VERY annoying! Like you said I have not seen it discussed before either!
It's not a CM6 issue.
It's an Android issue.

So it would appear then that there is no solution to this?
yeah, there is a solution. use handcent. chomp probably does it too.
btw, you may want to post your questions in the 'questions' section

Ah, next time I'll use the questions section. Regarding Handcent, does this actually allow me set the threshold, or just break up longer messages into multiple SMS--I mean, does Handcent present another solution other than the one I specified in my initial post?
AFAIK, SMS length is an agreed upon standard that probably in the near future won't be changed. longer messages will be broken up into transmissable lengths of 160 chars, until a message is long enough that it is actually simpler on the network to send the whole thing as a single MMS loaf.
So I seem to have a messaging problem I cannot figure out. I can't pinpoint exactly when it started happening but it was around the time I installed CM7 RC1 or nightly 38...
I only get my messages in bunches some time after they are sent. Its like after a while multiple texts get pushed through, just not when they were sent from the person. Sometimes i get multiple texts in the wrong order. I've also figured out the only way to get the texts to come through is when i call someone. Once i call someone, multiple texts push through.....really strange
Its like the phone has to actively access the network before is receives text messages...
I have no clue what this could be, any suggestions
Similar issue
I loaded the same Rom but it appears if I send out a txt with multiple recipients only one recipient gets it.
The thread title is the error I'm getting. This, from what I can tell, is not the wifi issue.
I'm stock, rooted and I use GoSMS.
I have noticed recently that when I try to send a picture message that is the large clear resolution that is shows up pending for a long time and eventually wont send, probably due to it's large size. To resolve this, I have started doing the smallest resolution, and thus smallest size when I know I'm going to be sending it to someone.
This works to make sure it get sent, if it decides it can. I get the "Can't send message right now. Too many many unsent multimedia messages" To try and fix it I close GoSMS and all other apps, but usually it takes a reboot to get it to go through. There shouldn't be any messages trying to send, as they will usually give an error saying the message couldn't be sent. I don't like to delete messages so I have one thread with 8000+ messages, mix of sms and mms, so going through and deleting all of the sent messages isn't really an option.
I cannot replicate the problem right now to test and see if using the stock messaging app would fix the problem.
Is there some folder or something that stores the pending outgoing messages that I could look at and see the "unsent multimedia messages" are that cause this error?
Is there some other underlying issue, some kind of buffer, relationship between received mms and sending, or anything else like this?
Any help would be appreciated.
Hey everyone, I'm not sure if one of you has experienced this but I have been having something very bizarre occurring with my text messaging. ONLY (so far as I know) between my mom and myself, text messages occasionally get truncated and concatenated with random old messages. For instance, I just sent her a message and what she received was the first half of my message and the second half of a message I sent over a year ago (from a different phone, no less)! She has had the same phone the whole time, but we've restored it several times and nothing's helped (the portion of the message that gets appended is not even on her phone anymore). It seems to only happen between my phone and hers. My texts to everyone else go through fine, her texts to me come through fine, and others' texts to her go through fine, but periodically, our exchanges are just garbled nonsense. Has anyone else experienced this or does anyone have any ideas on what could be going on? I'd greatly appreciate any input!
Oh, it might be noteworthy that this seems to only happen when I send messages from my computer, but I don't think this is the culprit because I've used multiple desktop SMS clients and it's happened on all of them (and still only with my mom).
Edit: I just looked at two of the "broken" texts that she forwarded back to me and both got spliced after 154 characters. This doesn't seem like a coincidence to me but being that it's under the 160 character SMS limit, it also seems like a rather odd number. Perhaps someone can make sense of it.
Edit 2: I sent my mom a lengthy message simply saying "test test test ..." and got another unusual result. The first one, which was greater than 160 characters, went through just fine, but the second, which was closer to 500 characters exhibited this peculiar issue...But this time, the message was as follows: "test test test...[after 154 characters] __PORTION OF RANDOM TEXT___ [back to] test test test ..." Does anyone have the slightest idea why this is happening? It's so odd and now I'm mostly just curious about what the **** is going on and why it's following this pattern.
Hello. I'm need of help. My samsung s6 keeps receiving and seems to sending texts to and from certain contacts over and over again. Sometimes for a few hours but as long as a full day sometimes. I dont know what is happening. I was able to block texting to those contacts and it seemed to stop. Texts with these contacts was typically in a group text (mms) and would happen daily. I noticed that when we would group text sometimes some of the messages would stay pending "download" and even after several attempts to dowload it the message would just stay pending so i would just ignore it. But later in the day and/or very late that night i would start receiving all these messages which seem to be the same ones over and over again. Much more people were letting me know that they were receiving texts messages from me. Its gotten to the point where at times i just shut down my phone overnight and pray that it clears up by morning. It had been. Any help you can point me to would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.
Are they texts that you have composed or has your account been hacked?

thank you for reaching out so quickly. They are texts that i have composed. At least those i can see. Its like they pop back up as a group text somehow and the messages keep coming even if i delete the group text.

No problem. I did some research via Google and found that a fair number of people have reported the same problem (across all networks, Verizon and T-Mobile as well as Sprint) with the following results:
1) The issue seems to be tower related, so the first thing that you should do is report it to Sprint. They'll tell you that you are crazy, can't happen...stick with the report and hope that someone takes it seriously.
You can point to: https://support.t-mobile.com/thread/86838?tstart=0 and http://forums.androidcentral.com/samsung-galaxy-s5/425621-duplicate-text-messages.html and https://community.sprint.com/baw/message/558872
2) To try to fix it yourself, update PRL and Profile. If that doesn't solve it, switch to a 3rd party texting app.
If I did nothing else, hopefully I assured you that you are sane and your phone isn't haunted. Best of luck.
Thank you so much for your help. I seriously thought I was going insane. Actually thought all this was "Normal". I'm not very android savvy so can you tell me what PRL is? Sorry haven't read Cell Phones for Dummies yet. I appreciate the links. I will definitely follow up. Someone told me that I may have to do a "Factory Reset"?

if it's a group message you're included in, I believe you need to have the other contacts in the group remove you from it.

Hello elesbb.
Since I recently just found out a few days ago that all this was happening, I spoke to the contacts on the group text and they confirmed that they were receiving most if not all of these repeated group texts. So we decided to stop the group text, and I put a text block on their numbers and the repeat texts have stopped. But I'm afraid if I take off the text block Im gonna have the same problem. What I did typically see that I had many repeated copies of the texts that were either attempting or failed to download. I would get this sometimes all evening and late into the night/morning. I really dont' know what to do. I'm in the process of contacting sprint today to see if its a system or network issue.
