IDK.
I put this on today, and is it me or can anyone else verify that the WIFI is WORSE than the prior official release?
I run 2.4 AND 5Ghz wifi in my home. Both are "N" Only, and I even have an extender for the worse part of my home for 5Ghz. Here's a photo of my connection and guess which one the GS3 is picking to connect to? The 2.4 network....
I DON'T like that I can't select the band (2.4/5Ghz) anymore.
I DON'T like that it seems to have ZERO logic to pick the strongest signals.
It DOESN'T appear to like to pick the 5Ghz band anymore. Even when you force it to.
Does the leaked LH1 work better?
(I uploaded a second shot after I reconfigured my extender to drop the _EXT, and that worked a bit better, at least it's 150mb again; I have 60mb service.)
There is a flashable cwm zip that is for wifi band selection the are 3 settings auto/2.4/5.0

Hi, I just updated my T-Mobile Galaxy S III to the latest firmware and noticed that the option to choose between Wi-Fi frequency bands had been removed. Is this what happened to everyone else, and if so, is there any way to get that option back? I had it set to only connect to 5GHz networks prior to the update because I was having issues with a wlan_rx_wake wakelock on the 2.4GHz band but I would still like to be able to switch between the two if possible. Thanks!
I noticed that as well.

How's it going everyone. Just left sprint for T-Mobile. Even with the problems I'm having its still better than sprint crappy network. Anyways. For some reason no matter what ROM I'm on I'm having issues where the WiFi will turn off it will go to 4g than WiFi will randomly turn back on. Or I'll have great service than randomly I'll see an E near my signal bars and it slows down for a good 5 minutes. Any idea what may be causing the problem?

It makes no sense!!

Flash a different modem for signal issues.

I've done that. No luck

Make sure WiFi calling is disabled. Then go into Mobile Networks and change Network mode to WCDMA Only. See if that helps.

Well if you are getting the E, that's Tmobile's network for ya. It is quite spotty. I get the same thing and goes back to 4G soon after. One of my main gripes with Tmobile.
If you do what DocHoliday said, it won't work at all. Just won't have any signal at all. If you leave it to auto, you will at least get the EDGE network.
Did this do the same thing with your old phone? If not, not sure what the deal would be besides weak radio maybe.
Try using the Llama app to force wifi on and disable the radios when around specific locations?
That's a workaround though...

Its worth a shot. I had issues with staying on 4G when I first got the phone. That fixed it for me.
Spotty service depends upon your area imo. Sounds more like a network issue to me. Could be a side effect from all the refarming work they're doing on the network. Its a nationwide project so it can hapoen anywhere.
@op
If you turn off WiFi does it work as it should? If so check that WiFi calling isn't enabled and set to WiFi preferred. If it is turn it off and test, then if fixed turn it back on and try Cellular preferred.

Dude I had that same issue until I flashed lh2 roms. Havent had that issue with lh2 roms at all.. try stocked up or wildchilds xquizit.

For what it's worth, I had this issue yesterday out of the blue. Nearly every time I would unlock my phone, wifi would be disconnected and I'd see the 4G icon. After unlocking the phone, a few seconds later it would connect up to wifi again. And yes, this is even with wifi set to always on in the advanced settings.
I realize there could be multiple causes for this symptom, but the fix for me was simply forget the wifi network and connect up to it again and the issue disappeared since then. Hasn't happened today yet either.
Hi guys I bought two galaxy s3 two days ago I'm loving the handset but there is something wrong with my wifi when I'm about 5 meters away from my router i'm only get about 1 to 2 bars of signal, sometimes I loose the wifi connection completely. I tried turning off wifi power save mode but I still have the problem is this a hardware issue ??
are you having the issue with BOTH of your s3's?
does it do this with other routers? at other locations? how old is your router? routers start to bug out after 3-5 years...
Known issue... go to find out what ghz ur router is then go to advanced and check either 2.4 or 5 wifi. Is a kernel issue..use another one like ktoonz

Yes, it's the same with both phones i have tried it at my girlfriends house as well and it's still the same problem but the she has the same SMC router from rogers as me the router is only about a year old, on my iphone 4 i'm getting full wifi signal might this be a setting on the phone ?

I finally got LTE locked on with Telus other users confirmed Rogers, AT&T and Bell(thanks) . No service disconnections, even while on wifi.
The problem I see is conflicting settings while flashing roms/modems. This seems to be the only fix. I'm pretty stoked I figured this out because I was about to switch back to my s2x out of frustration.
This took a lot of trial and error, literally had nothing to go on and no where in particular to start. Enjoy.
MAKE SURE YOU ENABLE LTE TOGGLE IN ROM AND HAVE IT ON BEFORE STARTING.
1. Network mode(settings/wireless & networks, more/ mobile networks/ network mode) set to gsm/lte/wcdma
2.Phone setting in test mode *#*#4636#*#* set to lte/gsm
at&t / rogers should select gsm/lte/cdma in test mode
3.Recovery flash latest modem mumLL1
(at&t users flash ucdlk3)
Wipe cache/dalvik
4 . Reset. Give it a couple mins to ask the network for lte.
If you disable Lte(through toggle) and want to use 3g/H+ for battery saving, the only way I've been able to reconnect to it; is to re enable(toggle) and reset, wait a couple mins to connect.
Side note: depending on your 4g service area, it may bounce around 3g/H+ which is normal.
When you place a call it will drop to 3g (the believed reason for this is that the phone knows you won't need heavy data so falls back to ease up on the battery during calls) but will reconnect a couple mins later. Our phones are slow to negotiate Lte connections with the radio testing sockets and network stability before committing, so be patient.
Let me know if this works for you and which network. Thanks.

Re: Fixed service droping and locked LTE
To check if it worked. Go into test mode and it should say Lte in network type.
Xda I747
So does this mean we get no 3g?
Sent from my Mind using Telekinesis!
Yes everything works. I can unselect lte in my toggles and it drops to 3g/hspa. When I re-enabled lte I noticed that I have to make sure in network settings lte/gsm/wdcma is selected and reset phone.
Xda I747
O wow lucky u I can't unselect on Att lol
Sent from my Mind using Telekinesis!
Which rom are you on? Should be up in your toggles. Basically it changes you network settings from cdma/gsm to lte/gsm/cdma. But it conflicts sometimes.
Xda I747
Its there it just doesn't do anything because all the modems on the Att S3 are Rill locked or something so we don't have the option to do it so easily

Ok sounds promising but unable to get my ATT phone running ROM cyanogenmod10.1 03/04 nightly into Test Mode using the keypad code provided. This does work for stock ROM phones. Do you know any other way to get into the test mode?
Haven't tried stock. Im on cm10..

Yeah I'm pretty sure everyone is using cm10 or aokp. Not sure if stock is having these problems. If they were I'd be on the phone yelling at Telus.
Xda I747
So let me get this right. This fixes the signal jumping around on cm10/aokp ROMs?? That's the only reason I stay on a stock based rom. I'm tired of seeing my signal jump back and fourth from 4g to 3g etc. On stock I always have a rock solid signal. It does not jump around..... Thanks in advance...

Yes for me and others didn't even get 4g, also it would completely go out of service. Now I get steady 4g.

Any alternative way to get into "test mode" other than using the keypad?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using xda app-developers app
Sorry man, I tried looking around for a way. Could be the rom you're on. I know Liquid and Carbon are fine. Probably a couple more that I don't even know of, others have success with.

stock lies to and shows 4G all the time, cm10 and show the truth. the s3 sets at 3g until data is needed then transfers to 4g
Wondering if anyone else is having issues connecting to a 5ghz network? I wasn't able to get it working, wouldn't even show up in available networks. That was stock out of the box, and after flashing a couple ROMs. I'm using slimbean now and am able to connect, but I have to turn WiFi on/off several times on the n7 before it shows up and connects. My s 3 connects no problem.
And I've tried all the standard troubleshooting on the router. Even changed some settings on the 5GHz band.
So if someone could double check for me that would be great!

5ghz works great for me. Reception is the best I've ever gotten on that band. Currently on stock, but it's worked in CM10 too
The 5 ghz didn't show up for me either. Had to manually enter the SSID and it connected right away.

On the first boot it didn't show my 5GHz WiFi, but after I connected it to my 2.4GHz, it immediately downloaded an update and rebooted itself. When it came back up, it saw my 5GHz.

Still hit or miss for me. Sometimes its connected when I reboot. Usually I have to toggle WiFi on/off 2-3 times.

My Nexus 7 connects to my 5ghz router band all the time. I think it actually prefers it. I'm using it right now.

Well I think I have it working. I gave the n7 a static address and now after a half dozen reboots its auto connecting every time. I tried changing channels on the router. Tried 20/40 MHz channel width. Ticked on/off all the options on n7 WiFi settings. Nothing worked. Then I set static address on my tablet and router and like I said so far so good.
I'll update if there are any other issues because doing a search showed a lot of other devices having this issue. But none of the results recommended setting a static address. Maybe I got lucky. I could use my 2.4GHz network reliably but I want full network speed since I only have the 16 GB model and do a lot of folder syncs to keep my SD storage free.
Edit: scratch that. Worked half dozen times in a row. Rebooted after I wrote this and it didn't connect.

During initial setup i was not able to connect to my 5ghz but i was able to connect to my 2.4ghz. After setup was complete i was able to go in and switch it manually to the 5ghz network. If i power the device off and turn it back on it would not connect to my 5ghz or my 2.4ghz. I then went into wifi advanced settings and switched to 5ghz only and it connected immediately to the network and hasn't lost it since. This was true before and after the update, i am stock, unlocked and rooted. I also do not broadcast my ssid.

If I am connected to 5ghz and go in advanced and select 5ghz only, it disconnects me from WiFi. It will still show my 5ghz network in range with good signal but if I now try to connect..it does nothing. Keep clicking connect and nothing happens. Then go back and put frequency on auto and the 5ghz disappears. I then have to toggle WiFi 4-6 times before it connects again to the 5ghz.
Strange.

I had the same problem at first too. Here's what solved it for me: set 5ghz frequency to 20mhz instead of auto, change the channel from auto to any number you want, 5ghz will most likely be completely clear in your area so just choose any channel. After doing that it should see the 5ghz network every time and connect automatically.

Same issue here. But i have to restart my device. Is it hardware or software you guys think?

I'm not sure. Seems like software to me because once its connected it stays connected. And the signal range is really good. Better WiFi than any phone I've ever had. Better than my laptop too. My s3 has no problems connecting. Even with all the router settings I've tweaked its never had an issue connecting with the s3.
Are you able to connect?
In another thread someone noticed his WiFi settings were set to Europe. He said he hadn't changed them and that he was fresh on stock (his first time booted). Double check your settings if you're still having issues.
Settings | WiFi | advanced | WiFi region code.
Mine was also set to Europe as well for some reason. If your router is setup to use a channel not available in Europe this would cause the problems described here.

OK guys, I think I have as real solid lead on this bug. I'll update with some info a little later, I want to test this some more. But for now I'll say that I made some changes and I have had zero disconnects or problems connecting while toggling or after reboot. And I mean 100% connection rate after 50 toggles and a dozen reboots.
Till I can get the info up, one question for you guys having the same issue. Do you have multiple routers in your network and/or custom firmware on your router?
