Anyone notice battery life improvement today after the maps update? It seems my phone lasted quite a bit longer than usual today. Just curious if I'm the only one. I'm running Cm10 by the way.

My battery is extrodinary today as well, not sure if it's related. I did just install autostarts though as well to stop maps and other things from auto booting, if it is that app, it's working better then I ever would have dreamed.

Not sure but mine seems to be better too. Hard to tell though since I've only been using my GS3 for a few days now.

I've noticed the improvement. I've read that there was a glitch causing Maps to keep the phone awake that was fixed with that update.

are you building from aosp? maguro? apps? wakelocks (although it don't seem wakelocks are the cause)?
I have the same issue. Not getting anything beyond 5~6 hours. I am on pretty much stock everything. 3G disabled/Data disabled. I am using the standard apps.
I am rooted and have been using Poweramp for nearly a month. I really enjoy it as an app, but I have found it to be extremely daunting on my battery. Has anyone experienced this or have any advice? Thanks!

Yup, it uses more battery for me too. I thought it was a known fact lol.
Basically unless you manually close it completely sometimes it will cause a wakelock, but then again even standard usage uses more battery life than average.
Auto brightness off that's about it moderate use a YouTube video Facebook and twitter that's it. Stock jb. No root. And don't plan to root.

JB has been known to have very bad battery life. If your not rooted, it's hard to help you from here. Maybe try some of the battery saver apps?

Turned off diagnostics how does that affect battery life? And that usage was on 4g just got home and turned on WiFi. GPS is always off. Anything else?
Sent from my SGH-T999 using Tapatalk 2
Turning GPS and WIFI off makes no difference. Those draw no power unless they're in use. WIFI only passively looks for a signal when it's on (every 30 seconds and gps is only active if an app uses it. Juice Defender will cause your battery to drain faster too.

My battery life takes a dive when leaving GPS on all the time I don't know if it has something to do with jelly bean or not? It also keeps the phone awake, thus definitely using more battery.

So many devs would like to have a talk with you...
T-Mobile Galaxy S 3, stock and rooted.
Actually the 4G radio uses more battery than wifi. Wifi can turn itself off after inactivity, having apps syncing all the time if you have it on will drain battery immensely. Mainly because it's suppose to be sleeping yet it still running and working and those apps will have a great time doing that. also depends how long you had phone, I have read batteries tend to drain faster after about 5 to 6 months of use.

Ever since Jelly Bean (cm or tw) battery life just isn't what it was on ics I was pulling 20 hour runs with 4 hours of screen time with ics, now I can barely get 9-10 hours with 2 hours of screen time.. It's almost like I'm afraid to use my phone because it'll die.. Very frustrating ik. Hopefully Google addresses this issue in android 4.3 (presumably key lime pie)
Until then, turn off Google Now, and maybe try to pinpoint some random app possibly causing wake locks and not letting the phone sleep properly (with the use of this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1179809 )
Also, I highly recommend checking out this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1969741
Good luck

I know you said you don't plan to root, but if you're looking for some real results you may have to..I'm talking about flashing a new rom/kernel. If you do decide to go this way, I recommend a debloated and slimmed down tw rom with lean kernel.

Its a possibility I would definatly try before your out of your return period even on stock your battery life should be at least 4hrs on time with 12-14 hrs standby I've had 2 sg3's one international and one u.s. and both had triple almost better than that buddy

Qualcomm released an app for anyone with Snapdragon that will extend your battery life and monitor what you do to better control the processes. I just downloaded it and it is in "Learning mode" so I will be excited to see how much savings I get when it has learned and starts saving.

This app controls the cpu.
Opps..my bad. So to correct my above statement in a nutshell... the optimizer just doesn't work as good as it does on other phones. Guess I should have read the article first instead of assuming.

Tried it. It's pretty much worthless. Turns off wifi when away from your access points, which is cool. Otherwise, all it does is prevent your major apps from updating to a varying degree. It's better to just control this yourself in app settings and "Accounts and Sync" settings. I think the app was designed with people who don't have a clue about Android sync settings in mind. For the type of person who spends time reading Android forums, it's a waste of time. Sorry
If you do choose to use it, be aware that depending on the setting you or it chooses for Gmail, push notifications may not work.

Incorrect. This app has nothing to do with CPU. It automates turning on/off wifi, and blocks or reduces syncing for various major apps.

Damn. Even with the ICS upgrade? This is crazy because I had an Atrix 2 for a while and with 1gb of ram you'd expect it to be okay. But this is that and 1.5ghz dual core.
But for $65 is it worth it? I mean in my city, there's lots of cheap and good phones. But this is the cheapest in its power range.
Should I just shell out a couple more bucks for a better phone?

Rooting this phone is easy...what stock ROM are you on? As far as battery life I can go all day without needing to charge. My wife can't say that with her iPhone and people at work who have galaxy s3 and s4 are always charging. Haven't had complaints about battery life since I moved from GB a year ago.

I think it depends phone to phone but on a super light usage day I might get 12-14 hrs. On my normal usage like 5-6hrs even with wind kernel and cm10.1. The major plus of the phone is that 2years later it still has one of the highest ppi's available.

I should mention that The battery is fine on standby. Play some games and forget about it! My software version is V20-c. Its been a while since I tried to root her, but none of the methods worked for me. I've rooted my Kindle Fire and my previous Android phone, so I have rooted in the past. The overheating issue is bad also, but overall, this has been a good phone! The display is beautiful and the processor is quite fast. I don't regret buying this, but wanted to be honest in my overview...

To root v20c use this method: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1886460
This works 100% as long as it is installed to c:/ and don't run as administrator.
However if you want to install cwm to install custom ROMs and tweaks (recommended) use this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2044645
This will allow you to install a variety of ROMs that are based on stock that will offset better battery life including game playing. At the very least install wind kernel in addition to better battery life it removes security from the boot loader so you can uninstall bloatware without bricking ie. Google Play movies.
Sent from my LG-P930 using xda app-developers app
The battery drain is for me the biggest issue. But with wind kernel and other roms it is much better. It depends on what you want to do with the phone. When you play all the day, yeah then you will charge often. But other phones have same problem. I bought an extender battery. By the way the phone is better in my hands weight of course a little bit higher.

It is no problem to change the sensitivity of the screen. After flashing a new rom I change the worth in the system folder once and then the sensitivity is fast and smooth. For this you can use an app of course. But why installing an app when I can do this manually ?

There are a few bad apples out in the wild. They are from the original batch that came out in 2011. But they are just fine in gingerbread. Sorry about your luck man.
Sent from my LG-P930 using xda app-developers app
Performance-wise, I went from a Galaxy S III to this phone, and the UI is decently smooth on the stock ROM. On CM it's pretty laggy unless you use Wind Kernel, which makes it a lot smoother. The screen is very sharp - I actually like its screen more than my S III.
However, I've had some bad issues with overheating on this phone. During normal use, it's not an issue, but I've had the phone shut off or reboot during GPS navigation, and when I felt the phone it was downright hot, especially on the back right where it says "8MP HD" below the camera. It got so hot that I couldn't touch it. Battery drain when under heavy load (games, GPS navigation, etc.) is also pretty bad. My 2 amp car USB charger can't keep up with it during GPS navigation, and the battery will still drain even though it's charging.
I've had the phone for a few months, and it is a decent phone overall, but I'd explore some alternatives.
I decided to go with an alternative. I got lucky and found a real good deal. I'm amazed myself. Thanks everyone for your input.
