[Q] Incredible: Dead LCD, Need to ADB - Droid Incredible Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

A customer recently dropped off an Incredible for repair with a dead LCD stating someone else had been in the device to repair it. After popping off the back housing, I quickly noticed the reason for her LCD problems. The actual connector for the LCD was destroyed, ripped off of the board, and sloppily taped down. This meant the LCD was not coming back (the leads for the connector are gone on one side so I'm unable to resolder it).
Long story short: She needs her pictures, etc. and cannot get USB debugging active because of both having no display and a possible locked out phone from playing with the pattern lock too much while she can't see her pattern. I was able to get Windows to recognize it as an ADB device in recovery, however it doesn't show with the normal "adb devices" command so pulling using ADB isn't an option this way.
Is there any way possible I can pull her images from her phone without USB debugging or a display? There is a confirmed pattern lock on her phone.

She has them on her internal memory. Normally we'd be able to access that, but the phone is locked down. She gave me her pattern, but it doesn't work. I'm assuming she's been locked out before she dropped it off from playing with the screen too much.

An ruu should not wipe internal storage.. if you want run that it puts it to stock reset... there might b a way to take the screen and play it on the pc

An RUU shouldn't wipe the phone, but might. If it was mine, not a customer's, I wouldn't mind. Replacing the board isn't an issue (we have stacks and stacks of DINCs here), but moving that chip has a good risk of damaging the board even further so that's a last-resort thing.
So I take accessing it through the recovery ADB isn't possible? Like this?

See, I can get it to install the drivers for an "ADB" device, however I'm unable to use any ADB commands. Looks like she might be out of luck.

I would, if it had leads.
Unfortunately, the flex is okay but the entire gate/connector is gone. With about 5 of the leads to solder it down. I'd sell her a new one if we had a refurbished one on hand.

One thing you can try to do is get into recovery mode (if a recovery is installed). With most newer recoveries ADB is usable while in recovery.

I can't run commands in recovery. VOL- + Power, wait... VOL-... power... Recovery. When it installs the DINC as a new device in recovery, it recognizes it as an ADB device but I'm unable to run any commands and "adb devices" doesn't show it.

You can't replace the LCD without the connection. It's been ripped off of the board. You can't put the connector back on the board without a lead to solder it to. If you look at the picture, whoever "fixed" it before did an absolutely horrible job and ripped the entire connector off of her motherboard, leads and all.
Replacing it was the first option.

I'm having a similar problem with an old incredible of mine. Had a fully functional handy dandy no problems at all Droid Incredible but the glass screen was cracked fairly badly. After a month or two I bought a replacement LCD screen, exactly what I needed. Except during the process a wire connector to the LCD screen wasn't put on properly and broke.
So now I have a Droid Incredible not without a cracked screen but just a black RGB gradient mish-map of a thing. But I can tell the phone functions just fine. I can start it up, hear everything loud (bootloader, etc), then on the homescreen I can hear SMS messages loading.. you know the whole spiel. And the vibration at the bottom works. And I am able to access things touching the screen - it's just the screen itself IS FUBAR'd, but the touch functionality still works.
I was thinking of virtualization methods for doing this.. in fact logged onto here for the purpose of doing so but saw this thread and saw its relevance so decided to post this reply instead. Could I use something like AirDroid or another android to desktop client to access or install it, and have it functional on my desktop PC?
The problems: installing the program, settings things up..
On the flip-side of my problem is I don't know a thing about ADB. I installed it, got it to work, tested a few commands.. so I know the basis premi s if need-be, but didn't like it or it didn't seem to fit my needs (probably to my discredit laziness and ease of access through modifications through GUI methods).
Any help/input greatly appreciated.
At first I thought these problems were nearly similar but reading it now I don't want to side-track this post if the problem isn't along the same lines in the end perhaps, but still related, sorry to OP if this is the case, perhaps someone knows a solution or has information that could both assist us.
Thanks all.

hey. i used sandpaper on my desire so it turned sliver.
but today i doped it with the changer in and the place where you insert the cable is edit up. my question is if i still have my warranty after i used sandpaper?

what where you thinking while using sandpaper?
:S i don't know i was using sandpaper on the pink metal so it turned silver :S
Even if you didn't use the sandpaper, dropping the cellphone on the floor is not covered by warranty. Sandpapering it is just a bonus.
I don't want to be mean or anything, but if it's any consolation, you gave me a good laugh today.

As you can still access recovery, do you still have a copy of the rom that you flashes on the SDcard? If so, perform a wipe and reflash the rom...
However, if you're still using the stock rom then you have a problem!
You have learned a valuable lesson in why doing a backup before tweaks is important...
I hope you can get it sorted.

i can't ruu flash it, and it have boot loop. and i did do a backup but i can't enter recovery, watch the film i posted
Is your sdcard damaged? Check it in your PC.
If the card is fine maybe the sim and sdcard chip popped out of the motherboard, take a look inside the phone and pop it back in. It is possible for it to come loose when dropped.
Are you using a2sd? Might cause bootloop if sdcard cannot be mounted.

Phone is ruined?

So, I think I am screwed.
I am going to preface this by saying that I am very familiar with Android phones and am certainly not a noob. However, i am stumped here.
A few hours ago I tried updating my girlfriends phone to the latest version of MIUI 4. Well, it turns out that I was the poor guinea pig who found out for everyone that the uploaded file did indeed have an MD5 mismatch.
Anyhow, this borked my recovery (supposedly because a new kernel/cwm version was baked in to this flash).
Ok, I thought, I'll just put the phone in "Download Mode" and Odin back to stock and start over.
WRONG
The phone is NOT RECOGNIZED ON ANY COMPUTER. Not two different laptops running Windows 7 64-bit. Not a desktop running Windows 7 32-bit and not a Linux Box.
This isn't the typical "unrecognized device" error. I literally mean that it is NOT SEEN by any of these machines. There is no Windows "ding" or "noise" when it is plugged in. Nothing shows up in device manager as an unrecognized device. Nothing happens when I plug it in to my Linux machine.
I have tried FOUR different cable. The original Epic cable. My Epic Touch cable (which used to work great). A cable from a Nook Simple Touch and a cable from an HTC phone.
I am 99% certain that this is a hardware error and her phone is now ruined. She does not have TEP (she cancelled it for some reason -_-).
Has anyone ever heard of this? It can't be a driver issue because it would at least be seen by one of my devices correct? Or there would at least be a Windows "sound" when it is plugged in? The phone charges when connected, but nothing more whatsoever. I had issues in the past because of driver issues or bad cables. But, the fact of the matter is that the other day (when the phone was working fine) we plugged it into a computer and it would not recognize the phone at all (as I explained earlier). Even when storage was mounted, not a single thing was detected even though it used to work.
Sorry for the long winded and redundant post... It's quite late and i've been trying to fix this without freaking the woman out for the past 3+ hours. Driving me insane!
Anyone have any ideas? Or, any options I can take for if it truly is a lost cause?
Thanks everyone
uninstall all other phone drivers. Reboot. Install the drivers here : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=728929
Windows is very very picky with drivers. If that doesn't work none of the cables you have used is a blackberry. I would say go out and buy a good blackberry cable or at least a good thick cable. Try another USB port as well. You can even try a fresh install of windows. If all fails then the USB is borked. Or it is dirty... see if you can't clean it out if you can see any lint or other gunk.

This might seem really crazy but i had the exact same problem about a year ago. It wasn't the cable, computer or the drives.
check the little connector piece in the phone where cable meets the phone. Its a small copper piece that can be notorious for bending up or down. I could charge my phone like you but couldn't figure out why the hell it wasnt syncing so try that and i could guess that's the issue. since its your gf's then Im sure she has some tweezers that an bend it back up but be very careful.

Also, the connector is physically bent. I'm going to try and bend it again today. The sides visibly form an ever so slight "u" shape.
I took the phone apart as well last night to get a better look. That piece does not appear to be interchangeable whatsoever. The entire input is like, awkwardly soldered to the system board...

Do you think a JTAG would work? I truly think that this is a problem with the actual USB connector (we had problems with it before it got "stuck", EX: It wouldn't mount USB storage on any machines... Not detected at all when plugged in, aside from being charged). It isn't actually bricked... If my recovery would not have been wiped out by flashing the ROM with a bad MD5 OR, if I could get it to work on a PC/Linux machine I could easily Odin/Heimdall. I'm not exactly sure what a JTAG is, but I am 99% sure that I could fix this if it weren't for some crazy ass hardware issue. I'll try calling around.
Thanks man.
Its a direct communication with the board, is what I've grasped from hearing and reading about it. With this and a program it should rewrite things and allow you to flash things. Although now that I think about it your not hard bricked if you can get into Odin. And jtag usually puts it into download mode. Although I'm sure you can flash the stock firmware via jtag. Like I said Google things

If your phone is under warranty get the whole thing replaced. There are a few sites that sell the part if its not anymore. Look for Incredible 2 or S the part is identical. I have replaced mine its not difficult. I found a video on youtube that showed the whole process. BTW the part is like 5-10 and look for a tool kit if you dont have tiny torx drivers.

i just did one for a Samsung Galaxy (it was the StraightTalk one). I definitely don't recommend something this ridiculously tough... a 7 wire USB plug! Unfortunately, one of the pads came off and it was a loss...

It does not.touch s-off, ive turned 3 of them in with no problems, and along with the other 1000 that used that method.
Bootlooping? You shouldn't be. Did you wipe data/dalvik/ factory reset. It.should boot right up. To setup screen than pull battery and send In

Did it go all of the way through the process? Should've been a kist of things that it done on screen during process

I couldn't S-On my phone because my port was dead. I took it to Best Buy (where I bought it and pay for Geek Squad BTP); they took it and ordered me a new one which arrived two days later. SO far I haven't heard anything about it. Maybe since the issue was the charging port and not the software itself, they didn't care? IDK...
What a piece of sh1t this phone is. Can HTC even make a phone that lasts more than a year without falling apart? Luckily, I'm getting only my second inc2 on Friday. Can't wait to see what is wrong with this refurb beaut.

[Q] Screen just cracked on the inside, no display - how to salvage internal sd files?

Hey guys, my "locked" phone just took a tumble onto some black asphalt and now the screen is busted/no display.
Any suggestions/recommendations or ideas for retrieving the internal SD card datafiles before I claim insurance on it for a replacement? I can't unlock the phone from the busted screen because a) I can't see the display and b) the touch inteface no longer seems to react to input.
Thanks in advance.
Just a note: the break doesn't appear to be outward, but inward...other glass is OK but the actual backlight is shot.
Here's the million dollar question - was USB debugging on?
If so ADB shell will be your friend to transfer the files, especially if you're rooted.
Only other option is the program that mirrors your screen, don't recall what the program name is.
(Just remember I had to have it for the Zio at one point..)
Believe this will work even if locked...
Unfortunately USB debugging was disabled. Sounds like I might be screwed! :/
Any ideas on the deductible (if any) for a cracked screen? Note that the outward screen looks fine, just the digi display that is shot.
I made a thread about something similar months ago. It was called Kies is a life saver...
My friend shattered his screen on his SGS2 and wanted me to backup then restore his data to the replacement.
Plug it into Kies on a Windows PC, and select backup, then once you get a replacement select restore.

Thanks for the tip, but unfortunately it doesn't look like Kies will let me access the Backup features until the device is unlocked. And of course, I don't regularly backup this device.
Any suggestions as a plan b or workaround your friend was able to take advantage of?
Additionally, any idea what your friend had to shell out for the replacement w/ insurance?
$100.00 for insurance.

Ergh, don't exactly like the idea of having to swallow 100 bucks. So just for my knowledge, TEP no longer covers screen cracks? I'm curious if I could pass this off as a manufacturer flaw, as the phone itself is otherwise in perfect physical condition, just the digital AMOLED that is broken.
Take it to a corporate store/repair center and tell them the screen quit working. Maybe you will get lucky.
Were you using a case?

reboot into recovery and then adb pull the data you want.

Yes, had a CaseMate with kickstand on it at the time of the tumble. It was literally about 4 ft off the ground, slipped from my hand while exiting the car, and landed face-first on some craggy black asphalt. I could tell from the fall that there was going to be damage, but I was expecting the outer glass to break, not the inner.
Worth a shot I suppose, there's a decent place near me...they replaced my OG Evo for free - but I think this was before Sprint's insurance policy changes. Unfortunately for my S2, if you glance at the screen at a good angle you can see clearly that the AMOLED digitizer has crack lines.
Still, seems a shame to spend a potential 100 bucks via an insurance replacement on a phone that barely fetches half of that on Ebay...
TEP might cover you for a replacement screen, but of course you're going to have to pay for it.

Guys, I fibbed. Looks like I did have USB Debugging setup on the phone. Can anyone remind me on the internal_sd path so I can pull my data?
Thanks in advance!
Nvm...found it. For historical reference from ADB root (e.g. cd /) you can cd sdcard to gain access to the internal SD.
Need one more bit of help on this issue...
Trying to do an adb pull to no avail. Can anyone clarify why I'm receiving the error: device not found when attempting to execute adb pull /sdcard .\sdcard
adb ls gives me all files on the device, but pulling throws a "device not found" error. Is this a sign that USB debugging is, in fact, not enabled?
Can anyone advise me on what I'm doing wrong here? adb ls works fine for viewing the device directory system, but the minute I try to perform an adb pull I'm receiving a "device not found" error. Does this mean USB debugging is not enabled on my device, or did I miss a step in launching my device shell?
Reuploading missing screenshot.

No, device was never rooted.
I think one of the stock sw upgrades prevents you from retrieving your files with a computer, unless you are rooted. Take it to the sprint store and they may be able to retrieve your data
If it was never rooted I'm not sure what you can do to pull your data using ADB... Kies was the only thing I was able to use when I helped my friend retrieve his data.

Hard Bricked LGOG that I would be willing to donate for parts if needed

SO... My wife recently learned that it's not a great idea to charge your phone with a frayed USB cable. Had I known she was doing this, I would have put a stop to it. Sadly, the OG doesn't work. I can get a flash from the LED and a flash from capactive keys, but no download mode, battery pull does nothing and can't get the computer to recognize it. I'm going to make a few more efforts to revive, but I think it's done. PM me if you are interested and once I'm certain that it's completely gone I will donate.
The silver lining here is that my OG still works and I love it as much as ever.
Hey I've heard a legitimate battery pull fixes this if you're willing to do a tiny bit of manual labor

No, that's the write up that I based my video on. I assumed stevek216 was referring to actually removing the battery from the phone.
Thank you though!

I'm not sure where to find instructions. It takes a weird screwdriver but other than that I think it's just a matter of taking out the bottom screws, removing the back, and carefully disconnecting and reconnecting the battery
You try taking it to sprint? Has it been a year since you got it?

No and No. We didn't buy the phones from Sprint so we have not spoken with them about it. Certainly doesn't help that there isn't a corporate store or repair facility anywhere near me.
If you don't want to do anything with it, send it to me. Would love spare parts lol.

Maybe something could be done to coordinate swapping the backs since it sounds like you just cracked the glass and he would only be using it as a dev phone. Like I mentioned in the previous post, I have a few last ditch efforts to try and then will be officially giving it up if they don't work.

I don't mind you sending it first to him to remove the black plating and then mailing me the device with the cracked back plating.
Also, if I happen to revive and you still want it, I'll send it back to you.
sprint doesnt usually care if its warranty or not, ive gone in and had them fix just about anything and they charge me the standard 35 dollar fee if you dont have insurance, the only thing they dont cover is screen/water damage. screens are 100 i believe to swap.
damn i need the back plate too
I'd be willing to send you some money for your front assembly! I got screwed by a Chinese seller when I bought a replacement for my cracked screen. The new screen registered touches constantly when I'll not touching the screen, scratches and discoloration on the ACTUAL LCD (ie not the glass) and my volume buttons got borked during the swap $95 well spent... So I'd could definitely use it since its my daily driver right now. I'd love you man!

Take it by a Sprint Store or even call over the phone to Customer Care. If you have Insurance they will replace it for free, if you don't they will charge you $75 to replace it!

Will they open it up and see that I have taken the tape off the battery terminal and tell me to take a hike? Also, does it matter that I didn't purchase it from Sprint?
