Searching the forum

Ok so I'm trying to search just the epic4g area of the forum with my xda app. But I can't seem to figure out how. I have a bunch of questions that the wiki didn't answer but I'm sure someone has asked so I don't want to again. But. When I search I get stuff from other deviece forums as well. Any ideas

Ok first question. I have multiple apps from like the amazon market or from the devs webpage etc and I can't get them to update through the market now. It trys to make me pay again. Or stuff like that.
#2 is there a way to add a custom over my existing stuff. I have work programs on my phone I can not erase. So id like to install swischeese but not loose those or allmy contacts
I know I have or two more I was looking for the answers too but I can't remember right now

Buy Titanium back up from the Market. Get busy box from with in the app. Do a batch back up of apps and data. Export contacts to SD card if they are not in your Google account. Once you root make sure you do a NANDROID back up. Flash way. Go to Market d/l Titanium "free" the license will automaticly turn it to pro it. Batch restore. Done.

Ok, question 1 is odd, if you an issue updating and all you have done is rooted and changed to the Clean Kernel, its possible you got a bad download. Your best bet is to PM dRockstar on that one. Its really strange if it shows updates available and won't, that's some random issue
On to question 2...definately make a nandroid backup. Power down the phone. Hold volume down, camera button, and power on all at the same time. Scroll down with volume key and select backup/restore. Then select backup and let it do its thing. It takes a few minutes but then you have a backup to rely on BUT its always best to take out your SD card and backup everything to your PC. Nandroid backups aren't always perfect and sometimes if you use one it may not work. If you flash a ROM, its best to install apps fresh but you can (after flashing ROM) boot into recovery, scroll to backup/restore, then advanced, then restore data only. Some ROMs may give you fits that's why its always best to have a saved version of everything on your PC as well

Apps bought from the Amazon Market can only be updated through the Amazon Market. The markets are separate and do not share purchase records. You'll need to have Amazon, and update through it, which is, unfortunately, a little slow on pushing out updates. Rest assured, they will come. Dev pages like SetCpu will post the app free sometimes, but the version in the market is donation-ware. If you want to get it updated for free, you'll have to go back to the page you originally got it and get a new one.

A couple things here:
What CWM are you on? If you have to update it for a new rom, be aware that the Nandroid backups will not be compatible, and you'll have to odin back to re-use a backup, should something go wrong. I don't know about Swiss Cheese, you'll have to read the posts in it's thread to know if it can flash without losing data. I've posted a rom called RandomROM that is based off of SRF 1.1.0, which can flash over another version of SRF safely, but may not work properly in other situations.

Titanium Backup Pro or ROM Toolbox Pro?

I like the look of ROM Toolbox but Titanium seems like the standard for app management and backup utility.
I wanna support one, which do you guys recommend and which will I use more?

Rom Toolbox PRO.. it has all the features of titanium backup and more..its' like a packaged deal in one..instead of downloading other apps, you have all in one.. have root explorer, terminal emulator i mean the list goes on...

You will definately use ROM toolbox pro more.
You can backup apps, change build.prop settings, change fonts, CPU control,terminal emulator and lots more.
Good luck with whatever one you choose.

ROM Toolbox is an excellent Swiss army knife of utilities and more. Definitely has more features over all and for that I think would be the best pick out of both.
Only thing I am missing that I can't do (but Titanium can) is to have multiple backup of the same app in case I want to revert 2 revisions ago. Also the CPU control does not let you change the frequency if you are using a stock ROM (I am rooted) but you can change the governor (other cpu apps will let you make changes). Not sure how this is on other ROMs.

Backup misc data or something like that in the batch. That's the wifi settings, Bluetooth, etc....

I've bought boh but since I've purchased Rom Toolbox I haven't looked back at TB since.

ROM Toolbox Pro. Hands down is the best $5 I spent on any app since I have been involved with Android!

I got both for right now too. I like them both and both are paid. But I will probably just use rom toolbox and leave TB idle or man up and uninstall it

I think you also have to slide over to 'All Apps' first and then do the misc data backup. This way the systems are visible and then the batch will grab this data. It did not work for me from the Downloaded (default) screen as the pre-selected system stuff are not listed there.

That's what is does, Just click the "try anyway" button and your backup will proceed.

There is an option for Schedules within the App Manager section. However I can't confirm how it works because it will force close on me. My phone is stock and rooted. Perhaps some else can confirm this on other ROMs.

Use nandroid backup on other phone?

I just spent a long time tweaking my current system,

I'm about to do the whole process for my wifes phone, & I was curious if I could restore MY nandroid backup on her phone, and then just change the account info stuff...
Or is it so much hastle that way that it's better just to install fresh?

I just tried, and it looked great, but the only way I could unlink my google account was to [privacy->clear all data] but that messed it up... is there a was just to unlink and relink to another account?

EDIT - i did a triple wipe data in CMW and now it looks good... curious though about unlinking an account if it's possible

Remove main Google account from Android without doing a factory reset.
This worked on my ally running 2.2 Froyo with Cricket flash---Its good for those of you needing to change your primary Google account and dont want to lose any flashing or apps---I only lost the emails and contacts from the primary account so I suggest you back them up if you want to keep them.
You can do this if your phone is rooted:
All you have to do is use Root Explorer and go to /data/system/ find accounts.db and rename it to accounts.db.bak so I could just name it back if I had a problem instead of doing a restore. I also did a Nandroid backup.. Reboot your phone and goto settings>accounts and sync>add account and your good to go!!!!
*You can use AntTek Explorer instead of Root Explorer--its free
**I would do a NANDROID backup before, just in case you delete the wrong file accidentally.

IT WORKED!!! but then i got the Google talk authentication failed error like below
Ok as fortune would have it I had to use this trick recently with my wifes phone recently.
So I did it worked great.
The only problem is now it is occasionally asking on both my phone and hers

I just thought id post this information so everyone wouldn't have to search for it. Go to settings-applications-manage applications and scroll down to market and clear data then scroll down to google services framework and clear data then reboot you're phone and that's it enjoy. Remember it will take about 10 minutes to be able to use the market again.

I had to use titanium backup to to the wipe data, but it did the trick
{i only did this on the *NEW PHONE*}
to validate, i did a google talk -> google talk chat session between the phones.
Previously undoable
Now i'm going to make a nandorid of my wifes phone so i don't have to do this again!!

I think you have to add the second account then delete the first in syncs. Could be wrong though.

Back up/Restore

What is everyone using to back up and restore apps and app data? Ive used Titanium in the past but always had some type of issue when restoring data so I stopped restoring altogether and I have been reinstalling all my apps through the Playstore. I also have Rom Tool Box installed but have not tried it to restore yet.
Is there an app out there that works great restoring apps and data and if so which one. Thanks

Ever since I bought N3, TiB never worked for me, at least scheduled backup didn't. It takes less then 10 seconds for it finish backing up apps with new data, and when I sort by new backups, I see most apps where not backed up at all.
I've sent several emails to developers, but it's like sending it to a black hole, no responses.
It's a shame really, as TiB used to be the best.
Hellium is a good alternative too, especially if you are planning not doing root for a while, but it fails to backup/restore a lot too.

Thanks guys gonna try MBUP tonight and see how it does. I never had any luck restoring data.
Has anyone restored their app and data from 4.3 to KK yet? If so was it ok or did you have to do anything different?
Reason I ask is because going from 4.1.2 to 4.3 I and many or all others I should say had an issue woth TIBU and the TIBU restore app was created.

The playstore doesn't list "My Apps" anymore, how do you restore the apps now if you don't remember them?

Oh I also restored when I updated without any issues. Been using this app over 4 years now.

Did you back them up with anything? Also why isnt the playstore showing your apps thats strange unless yoir not signed in to your Google account. It has to be that. Check in playstore if your signed in. When your there slide your finger from left of screen to right and you'll see the menu. On top it should have your email sign in.

Best backup method and app?

Hi all.
I'm new to Android after a few years break. I was wondering what is the best back up method and application please?
In terms on contacts, calendar etc. I use exchange so I don't need to worry about that.
Is there an app that will backup my applications, launcher set up (apus), and general look and feel of my current set up?
Please also confirm if I need root access to use the app. I've no idea how to get root that would have to be my next question..

Mybackup pro is good for that don't need root but does help if you are

Titanium is good if you have root. Some apps have a backup option (ie nova launcher) so I save my backup files to Dropbox or Drive just in case.

Ok. Could anyone point me to where I find out about rooting please? Pros and cons. And a how to do for numpties would be useful. Thanks all

Am I right in that in order to make the most complete backup you need root but in order to get root your device is flashed and you loose all your data?

Thanks for the info Unfortunately it seems the only two options to store the backup is to either fire it to an external SD card of which the s6 doesn't have or backup to their own servers. When I try this option is says the free space has ran out and I need to purchase more at a minimum monthly sub of 2usd.

Wonder if you could assist? When I carry out a backup it obviously takes quite some time to complete. It seems my phone is switching off the wifi connection when the screen turns off as the backup process never finishes. Is there a setting that I've missed somewhere to allow this app to continue to use the wifi once the phone screen turns off?

Don't know about that think WiFi stay on far as I know when I use it out takes about 10 mins to do I have about 50 apps

Go into your wifi options, select more, select advanced, look for a option to keep wifi on during sleep, tap it and select always.

Just download the new SMART SWITCH from Samsung, it's light it's fast, and very easy. Never a fan of KIES and stuff but Smart Switch it's easy. Samsung is already listening to community they are removing bloatware, Touch Wiz is much better now KIES is obsolete with SmartSwitch coming up.

I use Helium. No root required, but allows backing up of application data, which to me is most important.

MyBackup Pro can backup to Dropbox or G Drive
You can setup MyBackup with Pro features to backup to either Dropbox, or your G Drive account.
Run the app and go into Menu->Option, click the "Online backup location" option and select either Dropbox or G Drive!
