I just got a HTC One X on vodafone and its on the latest firmware with sense 4.1 that was released a few days ago. Is there anyway to root it or should I wait for people to come up with a way?
Unlock your bootloader with htcdev.com, flash a custom recovery (like clockworkmod). Flash superuser in recovery or flash a custom Rom which comes pre rooted. Job done

Is there a way I can root without losing all my user data and apps from unlocking the bootloader?
If you do a search on here there is a way to back up before unlocking your bootloader, I don't know how to do it myself as I just re set everything after unlocking

Sure you are fully rooted? Try a root app such as no-frills, titanium backup etc to see if it fully works.

I had this Rom, just flashed the lastest recovery in fastboot,. Try flashing this in fastboot
check if the forum where you downloaded the rom matches to your phone...at & t one x is not the same like european one x's, because of the chipsets.
That could probably be the reason for aborting...

Have you tried installing a simple mod, anything, to see if your system partition can get remounted with rw?
Another thing I would try is to install supersu if you're using superuser and vice versa, and update su binaries.

You need to flash the kernel separately using fastboot. HOX doesn't have s-off so the kernel isn't flashed in recovery.
Extract the boot.img from the rom zip and fastboot flash boot boot.img
I tried that and it kep me in a bootloop still, and its s-on

If at the HTC logo, boot.img is probably still wrong, if later on, try wiping dalvik cache.

And i feel your despare.....what if you deinstall rommanager/Rom toolbox (its a crap piece of software anyway) and only reflash a recovery with the fastboot commands, then enter it and check if it works.....
Its a strange issue and the right guy (or girl) has to scroll by and see the problem. This might take time
what do you mean two recoveries? when you boot it goes to one and when you into boot recovery the other?

Yes.
Over on a Spanish forums, it says the update just claims to enhance the system. No Android update
" Today it is with surprise that my HTC V ONE is brought to light in the version 2.22.401.6. The description of this version was only brief indicating frequency enhance the system. "
I installed it and can't notice anything different.
So this update is recent?

When you are in the bootloader you look for the option RECOVERY.
And if you are sure there is nothing deleted from your stock rom (system apps/Optus apps) then you only need to flash this recovery and update again
