Hi there everyone, my name is Alex and I just got my first smartphone ever, an Samsung Galaxy S2 and I would be grateful if someone could help take it to another level. Root, optimize, enchance it's "power", so on and so forth. I will really appreciate all of your help. I just heard of you guys from a friend, and believe me when I say "I AM NOOB!!" I don't know anything about rooting/ unlocking/ jailbreak/ etc.
Please leave me a message.
With deep sympathy and respect,
Alex.
what version of the GS2 do you have?
there are different forums for some different variants here on XDA. Once you identify which version you have, you can go to that forum and sniff around. read as much as you can, and you'll figure everything out pretty easily
You should start by finding and posting at the CORRECT section. I'm very sure that all sections have their own guide on rooting and flashing.
Devices are kinda like cars... if it is your first.. spend some time exploring what it can do already before you get into making it do more. Then, when you know your way around a bit... dig in!

Very well said my friend
If this is your very first Android phone (nice choice by the way!), you'll want to spend at least some time familiarising yourself with Android and its workings before plunging into anything here. Some of the stuff available here for the GS2 is incredible, but it can also land you in a lot of hot water if you don't understand what you are doing before you try things.
Take your time and enjoy it 'stock' for a while. Learn what rooting is/does, pick a couple of 'favourite' custom ROMs, and read through their threads (entirely) before doing anything. This will give you a good awareness of what to expect as far as bugs and hiccups are concerned, and how others have got around them or fixed them.
This is a fantastic community, full of fantastic Development. Make sure you stick to the rules, post in the right places, and if in doubt... read!
Enjoy, and welcome to XDA
I might be getting my hands on a Nexus, I just need a new phone, development on the Rezound is shaky and battery life is below average.
So my question is, what's the best ROM/Kernel choice for battery life first, screen on, and stability, good signal second, etc.
I know it's a beaten to death question but threads get older and I'm looking for the answer as of this week or so.
Looking for all advice, etc.
Thanks.

There is no one ROM/Kernel combo that works best for everyone.
YOU have to see how your device reacts to different roms and kernels. Everyone will tell you something different because they think their combo is the best. And it is, FOR THEM.
Well that's obvious but I wanted general consensus.
Sent from my ADR6425LVW
There is no general consensus. We have so many users using so many different things. Every single thread like this (there's like four everyday) results in people telling you their favorite rom and their favorite kernel.
Every time.

I can see where you are coming from. I did not mean to sound harsh but that's just how it is here; everyone has their own preferences and in a sea of AOSP roms, it is all personal preference for the most part.
Yea sorry to be that guy haha.

It's not problem. Just search for thread like this. There are a bunch of threads with this exact question.
Well not exact but you get the point.
So I've decided to start this thread because I've noticed something that I want to try and get changed for the better of this community and to help a person that I think deserves it.
What I'm trying to acomplish here is to start a petition that could potentially get him his status back. He deserves it in my opinion. And for the most part, I think you guys might too. So just place your vote in the pole and try and concentrate on all the work he produces for use and his attitude NOW. Please don't hold on to those grudges if you have any. Thanks.
I just noticed that one of are very Recognized Developers here on XDA (Task650) has recently lost his "Recognized Developer" status. So I decided to take it upon myself to find out why. Task650 explained to me that he recently flew off the handle and went on a "noob hunting spree" as he stated. He openly admitted to me that he was wrong for doing so and mentioned that he felt bad about it. Then went on to tell me that he has just forgotten about it and moved on with doing his best to better the SGS3 Forums and XDA as a whole. It was pretty cool to hear.
I know that he has been dealing with some pretty hardcore emotional issues with his 6 year old little girl having cancer. I can understand that sometimes we go through things in life that are that horrible, and we as human beings can act out in certain places that we normally would not. It's just something that happens and we move on from it. I can see that that's exactly what he has done. His attitude around these forums is back on track with what I've known from him and I only see him contributing and helping everyone out here on XDA as much as he possibly can. I don't think I've ever seen anyone here spend so much time updating his roms, submitting patches, and responding to others in such a helpful manner like I've seen him do. Now that's the exact type of person I believe deserves a "Recognized Developer" status. Hopefully the majority of you will agree whether or not you hold a grudge against him. I know he doesn't hold a grudge against any of you.
I DO NOT WANT ANY TROLLING OR FLAMING IN THIS THREAD! IF YOU DON'T HAVE ANYTHING CONSTRUCTIVE TO SAY. DON'T POST HERE! YOU WILL BE REPORTED IMMEDIATELY IF YOU DO!!!
Freaking out every once in a while doesn't make him less a developer or take away his skill and generosity of time and effort.

Everyone goes through tough times and it shows that by owning up to what happened and why and accepting resposibility, then moving on to make things better overall shows he deserves the status back.
I fuxx wit the boiii!!!!! He got dat "celebrity status" roun here...
Cuttn up the bud on my SAMSUNG GALAXY S3.... #KeepIt1Hunid
I agree. He's a fantastic developer, puts out a very high quality ROM; and frankly, if he comes off a bit harsh... its probably something you should have googled. I've learned a ton, just from lurking his thread and asking the occasional question. Development software is essentially beta/testing software, so if you're going to run it... learn.
I flashed half a dozen ROMs to this device before I tried theirs, and now my only flash is for the latest update, which is routinely put out more frequently than any other aosp ROM I've seen.
Task is involved, interested, and more proactive than any paid developer I've ever known, on any platform... and he does gorgeous work for free. Its impossible not to recognize him as a developer, no matter what his title in the forum is.
Edit: didn't know about his kid either.... now I like the guy even more.

I've seen plenty of other developers on XDA and other forums get fed up when people don't search or decide to get an attitude because something isn't working for them or they don't get the response they wanted. Some have even left XDA because of stuff like this. Totally unnecessary. Imagine what this world would be like without Task. Very, very dark. He's only human, most of us wouldn't have half the restraint he does.
Hopefully he'd just start his own site and carry on. We need him more than he needs us.... he's just sharing something great he did for his own satisfaction.
The guy that made my HTC merge bearable till my uscc contract was up did just that.
+1 Task makes the best ROM I've ever used on 5 devices. Amazing guy.

Task is human.... OK, maybe superhuman, but we all get tired of out of control noobs wallowing in their laziness and/or ineptitude on these forums, asking the same old questions and not reading the OP. I myself am a noob around here, but developers, mods, and fellow xda-ers who chastise those who fail to follow forum rules have helped me realize it's better to do my own homework. I've seen Task's etiquette improve since the incident on the SGS3 AOKP thread, so it's safe to say he is truly sorry and deserves to have his "recognized developer"status reinstated.
And BTW, unicorns dream of Task's ROMs!

lol wasnt there a "BAN Task" thread to? Good ROMs, quick updates.
I'm 100% with Task.
He could overreact a little bit once but there are some users that push it hard. Push it really hard!!!

is there any particular reason you decided to vote NO?

ok so i work hard too and we might get 1000 noobs in our thread too, you don't see me or anyone of us freaking out. im sorry but yeah things happen in life and mistakes are made, it doesn't mean you dictate what xda will do or will not do. im not against humanity or wheel of life, but if you are short tempered then let the mods do the job, you don't freak out bluntly on a thread like that. Im with what xda decides best. If you really care for him then help him with his work make his life easier, learn things that are done, fix things that can be fixed by yourself and if its a last resort you can raise a question and then if you get freaked out upon then im sorry that dev is either short tempered or life is not being right with him/her, but then again if life is not being right then don't create a UFC in xda cause it'll just splatter blood everywhere and it just doesn't make sense then to do anything. Ive made mistakes too here and yeah i'll admit i was infracted 5 times and yet i learned from those infractions and i learned to control my temper and learn from mistakes and move on. Xda did what they did for a reason and let them decide what they did is right for community and for everyone's well being, if he doesn't have a title of "recognized developer it won't stop him from doing his work. Also for cluttering threads to create a petition doesn't make anyone better, if you wanna voice your opinion then message the mods directly and if mods don't respond then go step above mods to senior mods and so forth. Also if you're planning to bash me because what i said isn't something what you wanna hear or look at then please don't bother because it won't change me, im gonna do my work, and i'll be here at xda everyday and i'll still be living. just my 2 cents.
So many ROM threads exploding with people who flashed their way into a whole bunch of trouble, and don't know how to get out of it.
Hopefully these predicaments are the inspiration many need to learn basic ADB commands after installing the requisite programs/drivers on their cpu. The trouble could have been avoided in the first place by not blindly flashing without reading the well documented issues they may encounter.
1. Read the thread,
2. Read the stickies,
3. If you occasionally like getting into trouble, at least have the proper tools available to get out of it.
4. If not, use search button.
couldn't agree more. what the devs do has taken a lot of work to make stable(ish) for everyone but it can STILL screw your **** up. so people need to be careful.

theres a link that was useful for me, hopefully useful for others. further reading material, is what i guess i can say about it.
^ Can't believe I posted one of "those" threads. Lame.
Edit: just tried to thank you, but I'm thanked out for the day apparently.
If they can't read the original thread, you expect them to read this one?
its a nice thought, but roots back to RTFM, those that should never do

this is the reason why i always tell ppl not to spoon-feed noobs answers, cuz they wont learn anything and will only mess up their phones and then beg for help by creating useless threads or post in dev threads..on the other hand if ppl didnt answer their question they will be forced to read and learn thus no more useless threads/posts

Haha that's why I stopped helping people in Q+A. I used to help with the whole "Help I'm bricked" topics. Not anymore. My opinion is don't mess with root system files than CAN brick your phone if you don't know what you're doing or at least how to recover from it manually should a problem arise. Let em sweat it before they finally search and figure out ADB. Which they will. Their first instinct is to come and just ask for help. After an hour of 0 replies and the need to use their phone now, they will search and they will find what they need. Not that it matters because you have people here saying just use the toolkit to fix it. Almost every single thread in Q+A has at least one use a toolkit reply.
Idk to be honest I just stopped giving a damn about anyone but me lol. If I tried to help every single person boot looping I'll be on XDA 24/7. I got a nexus, I jumped the gun & used a toolkit. I boot looped. I searched and I figured out what I needed to do to get back up & running. As far as I'm concerned let them do the same. That's the way it is today. Everyone wants to be spoonfed. They only want the end result, but don't wanna work for it.

Well if they brick their own phone, because what they do to it. They will be learn their lesson,...
Once i brick my tab... Then i learn from that to understand the process... About ask for help in web? ... That's out of question.. The only one left is... You and you brick phone.. Since that,i always looking many source of knowledge before do something to my phone..

Hey, as the guy who started the linked thread in the second post here, I've used Wug's Toolkit to save me time before. Yes, I had the knowledge to get myself out of that jam if that didn't work, but I feel the toolkits aren't a bad thing by themselves.

I agree they're not bad at all. People just shouldn't be so fearful of, or think that learning, terminal commands is hard. Posts like the one that was linked are a great starting point, thanks for taking the time to author that post. They can pick up where the toolkits leave off when someone's in trouble.
It kinda frustrates me too. The only reason why I have a low post count is because I know how to search and I can get my self out of pretty much any sticky situation with experience/searching. I don't understand why people automatically blame the dev for something they didn't know what was going on in the first place. I have maybe a 1/10 of the issues everyone else posts because I do the proper steps before hand or I go into it knowing what is already broke. If it is an unstable ROM then why bother complaining, you should know that not everything is going to be perfect.
Same here on the posting count. I read about what I'm going to do, can't afford to brick and buy a new phone.

Theres no such thing due to personal preference and ones needs vs others..its not to hard to spot the popular ones.
There is no such thing. The "best rom" is the one that you like the most, the one that works best with your phone.
All phones behave a bit differently with different roms, all users use them differently. fact.
If you're not willing to take the time to read the threads (the OP and at least the last 10 pages), try at least 2 roms for a day each, then you don't deserve to flash a recovery, imho.
xda is not a community that welcomes the lazy.
now, before you go getting all indignant and offended, realize that these threads get started all the time, usually by users that don't bother to read a sticky or the OP of a thread, or are unwilling to participate in the community in general. then a mod comes along and after several people reiterate the things I've said (with lesser or more degrees of politeness) and shuts it down. by your post/thanks count, I'm hoping you're not one of those.
so? get to flashing! good luck.

Devs here are top notch, and we have a good selection to choose from.
Many ROMS will have MA7/MC2 in the title if they are Touchwiz based, these roms are really smooth and a lot of them are themed heavily. I ran digiblur's rom for a while because it was the most stock looking, only the statusbar was changed. I really like the SlimRom and Carbon as far as CM goes, they are both very smooth and have great performance. I am downloading and flashing Liquidsmooth now. Be careful with the CM roms though as 4g has become and issue in the past couple updates. (Because of CM not the devs). They are working on it though so I am sure it will be fixed soon. I am not in a 4g area so I don't really care lol. Anyways like everyone said, the devs are great here and pretty much all the roms are outstanding and will be better than stock!
