[Q] Battery draining very fast, any tips? - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Hello all,
I got my Galaxy Nexus 1 week ago, I absolutely like it, but I've had some issues with the battery...
The maximum I got is 14 hours, with 2 hours of screen-on time (the post with the 6+ hours of screen-on times on this forum made my very sad... )
What I don't understand is that Exchange Services are taking 6% of battery usage, and seem to be activated for more than 2 hours...??
Is that normal? I have 2 accounts using Exchange, but 2 hours seems to be a lot.
My accounts are not even on "Push", they are on "15 minutes".
Do you have any tips on what should I do to spot the issue, or get better battery life?
Thanks!!
Jenny
PS: Sorry my attachments are in French, but I think you should understand

well if your exchange emails are not push and set to 15min, they will check email every 15min.
set them to push if you can. thats always better for battery

That's weird, because I got even worse results when I put "push" for these email accounts. I'll try "push" again tomorrow.

I don't know what to say for the exchange, but I can tell you that I usually get 2 hours of screen on too. I was thinking of flashing trinity kernel because I've seen screen with 4 hours of screen on, but for now I haven't had time to do it

i have about the same battery life as well.
install betterbatterystats( search the forum, there's a free version in xda ) to get details on which process is eating your battery.
maybe also try to understand why those ppl have 4hrs onscreen time. their usage pattern maybe very different from yours.
and using 3G/3.5G eats a lot of battery. much more than WiFi does.

Looks pretty normal to me. I've been on 50 different ROMs and I get pretty much the same battery life as you. I also use my phone to its full potential. I don't turn of data syncing and am on LTE all day.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda app-developers app

Not too much wrong with those stats. Screen on time could be better, are you on max brightness?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2

I don't disconnect 3G, but I don't use it much (I even don't use it at all between 10am and 6pm except the emails reception in background).
It's a GSM phone, no LTE for me.
The screen luminosity is on auto.
I'm trying today with the emails on "Push", Screen luminosity at minimum

first of all,6 hours screen on is not possible with stock battery.the maximum screen on i get is around 4hrs with 16-18 hours of battery life adjusting the brightness according to my needs.i am currently on codename android with latest trinity alpha kernel.you have to use your phone for few days until you get the max battery life.try my combination and see how it goes.

You can start by going to the settings for display/brightness and un-ticking the auto dim feature and then moving the setting to something lower. Basically move it as low as you can get while maintaining a reasonable brightness on your screen.

[Q] Is this normal battery usage?

It feels like my phone can't last much more than a day.
Am I expecting too much juice from my phone or is this the normal amount it should be at?
Generally speaking for me I only last about 12 hours unplugged. Even when not in use on idle, i seem to lose 1% every 10-20min or so.
Someone please shed some light based on these battery screenshots and tell me if its normal or not.
Your biggest wakelock is audio out. Turn off keyboard sounds and screen touch sounds and lock sounds. Now your phone can sleep better.

You seem to have fairly frequent screen-on usage paired with frequent intervals of GPS usage (see battery graph).
Are you using GPS that frequently? If not, id investigate on why your GPS is being utilized so frequently.
I'd say based on your usage, your battery life is fairly normal.
Two hour screen time... That sounds about normal to go from full to dead. You're lucky the phone made it 12 hours. Many people get a lot less.

with wifi on the whole time, that should help the battery last longer. I'm on LTE version and my battery life is similar to yours, but on 4G.
Based on your info, I would guess that you can improve it by turning off some things going on in the background. Widgets, weather, screen brightness, anything else using lots of background data or ram?
Sleeping with 4G, sync, and GPS all on I lose 1-2% per hour. But that's with no background apps other than stock OS stuff + AVG. I normally get 2.5 hrs screen time 100%-0% on 4G over a 12 hour period.
Well there's half the problem right there, facebook, it's refreshing for updates all the time.. also, underclock your phone so the max is 920MHz might save some, unless you wanna do some gaming or something it doesn't matter. Audioout seems to cause a lot of wake time for all android phones.. seen it in the epic 4g forums. But yessiree Bob.

Normal for a lot of people. Just look at all the poor battery threads. I get 2:30h with my gsm GN running Wifi and very minimal apps which sync. My browser is inverted and my screen brightness is low.
I get good standby time, but that doesn't really comfort me as I have a powerful phone I can't actually USE.
You will hear people say they get great battery life or they are fine with 2h screen time, but I just think they don't want to admit that a $700 phone in 2012 should have better life than this.
If you ask for advice, people will tell you to stop complaining and / or get a new phone. Don't reply to them or an XDA mod will threaten to ban you. Happened to me.

I listened to music for at least 4-5 hours this morning. I have Twitter set to update every hour or so and auto-sync on. If you have any other questions about how mine is setup, just ask.

If you watch movies, your screen time will be higher, but I use my phone for productivity and it dies fast.

With standard battery and stock ROM this phone can only give 2.5 - 3 hours screen time, which is unacceptable IMO in this day and age.
Turn GPS off, turn wifi off, don't use this app, only use that app, turn sounds off, don't increase the brightness, limit the cpu etc etc... So why did I buy a smartphone that I can't use then?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA App
I have owned more android phones than I can count, and tried more ROMs and Kernels than you can imagine. Countless times I have seem claims of improved battery life, and until recently nothing made a noticeable difference short of not turning on the phone. I am running the latest GummyNex Rom with the Franco Kernel 15.2 and it is shocking. I have verified the last two nights by leaving phone off the charger. Night #1 -8 hours 30 minutes phone sat while I slept, on 4g GPS enabled, and used 8% battery. Last Night 8:15 phone sat, same conditions only 7% battery usage. I am using the "Franco Turtle" governor and notice not performance degradation and only incredible battery life. Very impressive

Do I have a bad battery or phone?

I get 3-4 hours battery life at best I see people saying they get 10 hours I don't see how that is possible? Is my phone a dud or what this is very frustrating. It does the samething On the extended 2100mah battery. I'm running aopk milestone 4 and glados kernel

It looks like you were had screen on for close to 2 hours and made a phone call, albeit short. This is normal battery life for as much as you use the device.
You should try manually sync or set the syncing interval as high as possible.
Wifi always ON doesn't affect the battery life unless your wireless connection is weak/unstable.
Lower your screen's brightness or use Auto Brightness.
Fully charge your phone and let it alone for 2, 3 hours and check how much battery drains. If it drains 3-4% in idle mode, it's normal. Check also if your phone wakes up a lot, maybe some apps are running in the background and they wake your phone up frequently.
Hope it helps.
I used to have really poor battery life and like you wondered how people managed to get the stats I was seeing here.
I recently decided to do a factory reset for a different reason and to my surprise my battery life has improved incredibly. Yesterday I got over 18 hours in total with over 4 hours on screen time. This was with the stock gsm battery. Granted I was using wifi throughout but I was lucky to get 8 hours before the reset, even with wifi. With 3g I'm now getting 14 hours easily with over 3 hours screen time.
My point is if you've never done a factory reset, you may want to give it a go.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk
It's a bit hard to diagnose the problem based on only a screenshot of your battery stats.
Since your screen is using over 50% of your battery life, my guess is that you just had your screen on for about two hours of the total two hours and forty-five minutes. It's normal to not get more than about two hours of screen time. (Tap on the Screen part of battery stats to get more info on how long the screen was on for.)
In my experience with three Android phones (MyTouch 3G, MyTouch 4G, Galaxy Nexus), all the usual tips to conserve battery life pretty much do nothing to improve battery life: turning off syncing and background data, turning off wireless, don't use widgets, turn off GPS, etc.
Pretty much there are two big battery suckers on Android phones and particularly the Galaxy Nexus--the screen being on and LTE being on. If you dim the screen or just keep it off, you will seriously prolong the battery life. And if you use CDMA only, you will also seriously prolong your phone's battery life.
That said, it's also possible something is wrong with your phone... or your battery. We can't know just from the screenshot you posted.
This looks normal. How much screen on time do you have?

AMAZING battery life on gsm Gnex

This is from my first full charge cycle. Completely stock. Amazing! This is 3.5 hours screen on and 2 hours voice calls. It's not letting me upload those screen shots for some reason.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA
thats pretty good!
Yeah mine has been pretty solid as well. Yesterday after 17hrs I was still at 35% which is better than most Android phones I've had.
I really think that galaxy nexus standby is amazing but the screen is the only thing that really drains the battery. So if you don't use it heavily, you should be fine. I use my nexus moderately and I still get through a day with about 40% left.

Pretty good... i find voice calls and cell signal to be main battery drain cause on Sprint's turtle 3G network.
With 2100mah extended battery, 15% juice left unplugged at 8:30am, replugging in at 10pm, 2.5hr screen, 1hr gps, 30min voice
2nd full charge cycle
Here are the results from my 2nd full charge cycle:
40+ hours off charger; 4.5 hours screen-on time. Remarkably good.
How are you getting such good battery life? i can't seem to even last a whole work day, requiring me to charge before I leave the office.
I just got my replacement, so hopefully it will be better this time around.

I use 30-40% brightness. Black wallpaper. Other than that, nothing special. I only have 1 gmail account syncing, unlike some of the people on here that have 3 or 4 email accounts syncing. I also only have like 2-3 widgets running (beautiful widgets smaller home, audiomanager pro, astrid, and maybe one or two others). And most of the screen on time is doing relatively simple tasks like web browsing, reading xda, google talk, etc. Nothing too terribly intensive like video.
Based on my experience though it seems like pretty much anybody except the heaviest of users should be able to get at least a full day's use out of it, and lighter users should easily be able to get 2.
Is yours GSM? I hear the Vzw/Sprint ones get far worse battery life.

I agree. I ended a day with ~70% battery left, and most of my usage was the screen (~30 minutes or something). I haven't had any issues with my battery dying on me yet. If I left the screen off all day, I could probably use 10-15%.

I'm guessing it isn't using LTE. If I only connect by wifi and turn off data syncing then I can get more than a day too (with moderate use).

Correct it is gsm, not lte.
That's impressive! Stock rom allows you to get at least 20 hours of WiFi/3G with 3-4 hrs of screen. Auto brightness. Here in Europe we don't have LTE, so our batteries could last a little bit more.
avarage battery use is over 13 hours (cm9+franco kernel).
10 hours and 53 min it dropped to 94% worth mentioning I didn't even touch the phone, can't seem to post a screen shot of it
Right now I am at 45% and I used it quiet heavily today
I didn't charge the phone even if it sems like it

Some of the best I've seen so far from my phone (about two weeks old) is posted here. Almost 36 hours of uptime! Wifi on the whole time, had a signal for most of it too, but guarantee there were some times that I didn't (because I was trying to use the phone then). This includes time spent playing some games as well. I've fired up Osmos HD, Everlands, Swords and Soldiers, and Draw Something at some point during that charge for at least a few iterations of play on each game. Decent amount of browsing, including hits from Google Shopper for some price comparisons. I'm syncing one Google account and one Exchange account, with black wallpaper, auto brightness (not tuned) and the calendar, news and weather, settings, and prepaid usage widgets. Stock ICS and unrooted.

Mine's absolutely horrid, I can't for the life of me figure out what the hell's wrong with it. I'll run out of battery after about 12 hours, with the screen time at 1 hour and maybe 30 minutes if I'm lucky? The phone drinks away my battery in standby mode like a former alcoholic united with an opened beer. When I was on ICS, turning off 4G every time the screen was off with the AutomateIt app would give me excellent battery life. Ever since Jelly Bean, it doesn't seem to make a difference. I just don't even bother using AutomateIt anymore, I even uninstalled it. Useless. I check marked the option, "Restrict Background Data," but I actually had worse results with that on even. Following the thread about the Guide to good battery life, I turned off auto-sync. The only thing that seems to do for me is not get my emails in real time. No effect on the battery though. I'm guessing the battery drain has something to do with being on data (even though turning it off doesn't seem to do much) because everytime I go to school where there's little WiFi, battery's worse. Also, somehow my Messaging app takes up more battery than the screen. What's with that? I'll text every now and then, but it shouldn't eat away my battery like a fat man with the last batch of Twinkies. Enough with the dumb similes, haha, but I actually need help with this. I really don't wanna buy a battery off eBay cause the damn people are too lazy to send you the battery until a month passes, and I hate charging in the middle of the day.
I'm on 100% stock. I used to root and mess around with a ton of ROMs, but then I realized all my favourite ROMs were the ones closest to stock...
.... look at the eBay expected arrival and/or look for a seller in the USA ?
Anyway, that bit aside - have you installed something like BetterBatteryStats to be able to see what the problem is so you can fix it ?

5 hours... how !?
Easy !
I'm on stock and if I'm almost all the day on WIFI, not playing too much games, and with auto-brightness,
I can get 5 to 6 hours screen time.
(but on 4G all the day, it's more around 3 hours screen time)
This is what most people get with normal use around 14 to 16 hours and 4 to 5 hours screen time. I think the biggest issue is that 4G radio that most people have on all the time. I I have wifi everywhere so most of the time I have mine off that helps a ton. Plus all the sync stuff off, I get about 6 hours over 17 hours battery life and about 30 to 40% brightness.
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda app-developers app
14-16 is what was normal for me when I first got my GS3 (after JB update). If you want more battery life, I recommend trying juice defender (custom settings for data off while locked). If you have stretches where you don't use your phone it works really well. Just thought I would throw that out there.

Galaxy Note 2 Battery Life

Hello guys.
I've been reading these forums for a few months now and find it very very helpful in configuring my device. It's just now that i decided to sign up so i can be part of this great community.
This is my first ever post and i would like to get help regarding my battery life.
Ive read a few articles about battery saving and also from forums where people usually get more than a day's worth of battery life. That got me wondering why i only get around 8-10 hours average considering i only use it very lightly as im usually busy at the office. My actual usage time range about 60% of those 10 hours when i use the phone during breaks.
Here are example screenshots of my daily usage:
Here are some details about my configuration:
Brightness set to auto, most of the time at 75% level
Wifi, bluetooth, gps always off
Haptic feedback set to minimum
Mobile data always on and set to WCDMA only, area where im at is usually weak peaking at 2 bars of H and H+ signal strength
Gmail set to push notify
A few apps and widgets set to sync after every few hours(accuweather, flipboard)
Ive been considering getting an extra battery because of this but i really want to make sure first whether i could still do something or whether im doin something wrong thateads to the battery draining too fast.
So please if you have any more tips i could use, please help me out on this.
I thank you in advance.
Sent from my GT-N7100 using xda premium
Also here and additional screenshot to go with the two previous screenshots i posted. It says here ive only had the screen on for 3 hours.
Sent from my GT-N7100 using xda premium
Their battery lasts whole day long. It means that they get 10 hours of screen on time only. Not 24 hours.
Sent from my GT-N7100
Yeah. But in my case the 10 hours is the total life of the battery from the time it is charged until it dies. I'd be lucky if i even get 4 hours screen time out of it.
Do you have an idea why this is so?
Im guessing its because of the weak signal where im at and the fact that i set my phone to search for WCDMA only. Although im not sure whether this is really the culprit. I'll try setting the network mode to auto for now and see if anything changes.
Sent from my GT-N7100 using xda premium
Looks like it.
Try better battery status.
Sent from my GT-N7100
Well after i changed it to auto it improved a bit. Its currently at 14% after 11 1/2 hours with 4 1/2 hours of screen on time. The phone stayed on full edge signal for most of the time (which kind of sucks because internet became painfully slow on edge).
But still, i think this is far too short when compared to those who can get it to more than 24 hours battery and more than 10 hours of screen on time.
Is it possible that i have a defective battery?

i got exactly the same problem, whats your firmware?
since i updated the phone to 4.1.2 the battery drains alone, every 8 hours it discharges 25% without using the phone, i am lucky if i get 5 hours of screen. The android os is the one draining all the battery in my phone. On 4.1.1 i could get 7 hours of screen time with 20+hours overall.

having to charge at least two times a day really negates the otherwise great features of this phone.
I really hope we figure this out. I'll try UtkarshGuptas suggestion using Better Battery Stats and let you know what i find out.
I did they and found Google location services is the culprit.
I'm am referring to the locations services found under location setting in the actual Google maps app. I believe turning of location reporting may disrupt Google now features. Google locations devices is reading out as the main reason for nine consistent partial wake locks on better battery stats.
I'll try turning these features off and awe how it affects battery life and Google now tomorrow.

Please let us know.
after doin some tests with bbs i found the wakelock is mhl_wakelock,
First off, forget all the battery programs. Factory default your phone and add an apk at a time and use. You'll be able to tell what apk is the problem with a lil testing. Slow process yes but pretty straight forward and to the point. I do have a Note 2 and have no battery issues being rooted and having tons of programs, etc. Basically, I use and abuse my device as per my job and still get a day and a half out of the battery.
People who can get 24hr coupled with 8hr screen time most likely have their phone on low brightness and on WIFI not data.
I got a new battery and its still lasts the same as the other. Yeah it may be because of the mobile data always on that eats up my battery.
Problem is my data connection is my primary internet source i dont always have wifi hotspots. So i might just have to live with the short battery life or learn to turn off my data when i dont need it.
I'll still try looking for other things that contribute to the battery being drained though.
Thanks everyone.

I have GPS disabled, auto brightness (but fairly high level) and that improved battery life quite a bit. I then changed kernel to NEAK kernel, reduced the voltage levels for the CPU and that further improved battery life. I can get a full 24 hours on one charge and with normal (?) usage). With the new kernel I can also modify the charging current to a slightly higher level which reduces the time to bring to a full charge.
All in all not too bad but to expect more than 24 hours is unrealistic in my opinion as it is a big handful of electronics!
Not sure what you guys are are doing different. This is my first full month with my note and the battery is a beast. GPS is enabled at all times but all other syncs are disabled. That's just from previous experience. Sync will always drain the battery. So mine is off. I went as far as removing all the extra chargers around my office and home. .now I only need one. And I alsi don't see a need for an extended battery unless I'm going to be away from civilization for a few days. By the way..that was the only time I've killed my battery..kinda. see screenies
--I forgot about brightness- mine is set to 50% and 4G/LTE ..if the device is always searching for it, it will kill your battery. I turn it off at the office as much as I can.

I get between 6-7 hours of on screen time on mine.
Using dark backgrounds really helped the bettery life for me. I use a dark wallpaper for touchwiz, whatsapp, and also carbon as my twitter client.
Using Perseus kernel also helped because it doesn't ramp up the cpu as high as the stock kernel.
Wanamlite rom.
Brightness set to lowest at home. 25-50% when outdoors.
Two MS exchange emails set to push.
I use wifi all the time unless it's not available I switch to HSPA+. what a waste of a paid data plan
Google now disabled because it's a battery hog. location services kept on though.
