I'm loving all the ROM development for the S3 - but S Voice is often pulled out as bloatware. I do like it though, but wondering is there's a way to restore it from a TiBu backup. I wasn't successful the couple of times that I tried it before - is there a way to do it?
---
Well - my bad... looks like everything is actually working ok. I might have been trying to restore across different builds. Carry on..
same here. I backup s voice with titanium backup..but when i tried to restore...it kept "restoring" , but nothing happened.

I don't know for sure, but I think it has something to do with where you're stating from. What build did you get your s voice from?

If you backup S-Voice from the stock ROM and restore to a custom ROM it will almost never work. This is because stock it is odexed and most custom ROMs are deodexed. This makes the app incompatible. You need to download a deodexed version of the app such as is found on the kyanrom ROM page in the kyanappend section of the post.

Hello All,
So I attempted to install my first ROM today and it was successful. Prior to installing I made a nandroid backup and it looks like everything went smoothly.
I tried out the new ROM and it wasn't to my liking. I want to restore to my Stock ROM but when going to backup and restore in ClockworkMod Recovery and clicking restore it says Checking MD5 sums then says MD5 mismatch!
What does this mean and how do I fix it? Thanks.
I figured out what I did wrong. When I made the nandroid I renamed the file and put spaces in the file name. When I renamed the file again with no spaces and tried another restore it worked perfectly. Thanks.

Yup. CWM backup files can't have spaces in them. Are you the one who was looking for suggestions to try custom ROMs? Did you not like DW?

Hi yoft1,
Yes, I was the one looking for suggestions to try ROMs. I actually liked DW. It was easy to install and booted fast even on the first boot. My main issues was that the Google play store kept force closing and wouldn't work. Also, there was no Gmail app. I know I can download it from the play store, but since it kept force closing it wouldn't work. Also since I am a Telus user the data icon shows 3G and not 4G for some reason. I know it's just cosmetic but I would like it to say 4G. I reverted back to stock for now.

If you know how to clear application data that should fix the force close. Roms always have the odd problem here and there upon first installation but they can easily be fixed and not touched again. If you're interested in trying again I could walk you through your issues, the end product should be a ROM with absolutely zero stability issues.
Thanks for all your help man. You are really going out of your way to make this a smooth transition for me. The only other issue was when I backed up my mms/SMS messages through Titanium Backup and restored after running DW it didn't take for some reason. All of my text conversations were gone. Also my call log was empty as well. What programs should I back up to restore this info? Also, I guess I could backup Gmail and restore that as well correct? Again your help is much appreciated. Peace.

Not sure how to restore contacts from a CWM backup but for future reference use SMS Backup. Also you when you were running DW you didn't happen to restore app+data?

I use SMS backup and restore, rather than tb, others have had issues restoring texts through tb too. If you want to restore call logs, call log backup and restore has worked well for others but I can't personally attest to that since I don't restore call logs between roms.
No need to backup gmail since it's all email in the cloud right?
The only things I backup are my apps (using titanium so I don't have to re download them, restoring through TB is much faster, just make sure you're not restoring any system data though) and my SMS.
No problem man.

Yes, I restored all apps with data. Which option was I supposed to choose?

You aren't supposed to install any system data? Because I restored Gallery, Google Play Store, Maps, SMS/MMS, Voice Command, Voice Recorder, Voice Search and Youtube.
Those apps were all considered system data, but I wanted to keep them so that's why I backed them up. Was I incorrect in doing this? Thank you.

System data usually doesn't play well across different ROMs. It's usually advised to not do that as it will cause random force closes. When you go into TB and go to batch operations, Just run "Restore missing apps with data" and you'll be fine.
Restoring data is okay, as long as it's for apps. This is your save data for games, etc. System data on the other hand, causes problems. Anything that isn't restored through "Restore missing apps with data" can be downloaded or is already included on the ROM.

I use Mybackup Pro - you can backup both contacts and messages
---------- Post added at 02:13 AM ---------- Previous post was at 02:05 AM ----------
I did also get the mismatch recently. I don't know if it was a glitch. In my rom manager it shows cwm 5.0,2,7, but I recently flashed cwm touch. From the rom manager, I booted into recovery, and backed up my rom. Flashed a different rom, didn't like it, and tried to restore the one I had just backed up. I got the error, with no changes to the file name. So after completely reinstalling the previous rom, I shutdown, and booted into recovery with the volume up/down/power, backed up, and was later able to restore. It seemed to matter how I booted into cwm.
If this happens to you again without you changing any names, reflash your recovery and if your on the touch recovery then flash the old recovery.

Hello, I just recently installed a custom ROM (Darkside Evolution 3) on a Galaxy SII T989. I noticed it did not come with the Market Updater app (com.android.vendor.apk) and wanted to know why something like this would not be included, and can I reinstall it. I have a backup from ROM Toolbox of this app, so I can restore it.
Will missing this app not allow me to update either Google Play or my apps automatically?
Thanks.

It should, although you might have a bad download a reflash would probably fix it. A restore would as well I'd think.

Thanks for replying. I actually tried flashing twice, with a full wipe in-between, and still no Market Updater app. I would have posted this question in the actual developer thread for that specific ROM, but seeing as though I don't have ten posts yet, I am not allowed.
Thanks

2 questions
1) When I use goomanager and search for compatible roms, why does it show no roms were found? Im using stock everything, rooted.
2) TiBu, when i back up all apps and system data, it hangs on "com.android.sharedstoragebackup" Does anyone know whats wrong with this?
Don't back up the system stuff. Only cause problems when you try to restore it
As Mike said, stay away from backing up or restoring any system stuff.
As far as Goo...stay away as well even if it did show anything lol. Its best to come here to the xda Threads so that you can read about the current rom releases and updates. Also the Devs can add notes here better than they can on Goo.

I will listen to both of u.
but just for knowledge sake.
1) Why doesnt it show any roms on Goo
2) so most poeple would not back up system data? What is that anyways?
I did a full twrp backup, that should include everything, TiBu's benefit is having the option to restore certain items. Would any of those include system data?
A nandroid takes a full "portrait"of your system. TiBu only restores individual component s of your system
If you back up system info from say ics and then restore it to jb, it won't work out well. The framework is different
Not sure why it doesn't. Maybe an issue on Goo's end. I just downloaded goo on my note 2 and it is the same way.

what if its with another version of ICS? Would that be helpful?

The issue isn't really a matter of using it to flash ROMs - which really just delegates the work to TWRP, assuming that's the recovery you're using - so much as using it to find ROMs. You're much better off finding ROMs, say, around here, where info about the ROMs, support, etc. is right there along with the ROMs themselves.

Hi! I'm new and I need help. I've just bricked my rooted S3.
My S3 was rooted with the official firmware. I did it last year, so I'm not sure which firmware was I on.
I was just messing around Titanium Backup and I've accidently frozen the TouchWiz launcher app. I thought it was just a junk app, but I was wrong. The S3 screen turned black, so I rebooted the phone and now I'm always stuck with the Samsung boot logo forever.
I can get into Download mode or CWM recovery. I heard that I could fix the S3 by putting the TouchWiz apk back into the system folder or something... But I don't know how.
I guess I can reflash but I don't want to lose data... How stupid of me not to backup data before.
Thanks in advance
Ok, I've managed to fix the brick problem by using ADB to push/install SecLauncher2.apk into the system folder. However, I'm running into a new problem right now. I constantly keep getting "Unfortunately, TouchWiz Home has stopped." errors and some blank screens.
Did I install the wrong HomeWiz launcher...? Or is it because of the conflict between this HomeWiz launcher and the frozen HomeWiz launcher from titanium backup?
Any solution...?

Sorry, missed that part......
Go here, download either the odexed or deodexed rom, flash it in recovery and you'll be good to go.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1910947
Also, just fyi, if you can get your phone to turn on at all then it's not bricked......borked, sure, but not bricked. :highfive:
Dirty flash a rooted stock Rom or a custom one. TW based. Do NOT wipe anything.
You also can install another launcher like Apex or Nova and set right permissions to the launcher and unfrooze in TB.

Thanks, but my S3 isn't Spirit. Does it matter?
Well, I've just uninstalled the TouchWiz app via ADB and installed a different launcher called GO or something. No more error now, but the TouchWiz app is missing in Titanium backup (the one that I frozen)... Is it possible to find the touchwiz APK somewhere else? the one that actually works.
I've never installed a custom ROM before. So, can you recommend me which one to use? I'm all for battery efficiency.

You have to go into recovery then wipe dalvik cache and fix permissions
A brick is when your phone becomes as useful as a brick. No booting, no bootloop, nothing

Hey everyone,
So like many users on this forum, I was a moron and decided to try out the 4.3 update which upgraded my baseband to I747UCUEMJB. Realizing my mistake and not particularly happy with 4.3, I remembered I had made a nandroid backup from 4.1.1 on an extSD. Everything went smoothly as usual when I restored from the Nandroid backup.
My problem now is prior to making the backup, I tinkered with the rom using TiBu to eliminate bloatware. Now my camera isn't working and I can't Odin back to a stock 4.1.1 build because the baseband's don't match.
Am I screwed or can someone provide me an alternative? I have the 4.3 update still which I can flash so if that's my alternative that's what I'll have to do.
Did you delete the apps with tibu or just freeze them? I personally never delete bloat I only freeze it. In case I have problems like yours.
If you deleted them I would flash a 4.3 rom to get back to where you have a useable phone.
