Porting SGSIII ROMs from other versions of the SGSIII? - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S III

Can anyone provide a guide on how to port a S3 ROM to the Sprint variant. What is different between the devices other than carrier settings and boot images? Any help would be much appreciated!

This one is pretty good. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1791006 (not s3 specific but one of many posted on the site). that being said, its a *****. Read instructions carefully. As far as the US varients of the S3, all the partitions are the same as far as i know, at least the ones the will be touched during a flash. If you are a complete noob with this i would advise not messing with anything other than another US variant of the s3. A small fucck up could mean a paperweight

[Q] Can the ics update for UK be used in the US?

Hey Guys,
I just recieved my galaxy s2 4g yesterday. I have already rooted it and installed the recovery (yay). My question is, can I install the rom from the official ICS release from the UK on my US phone? Or will I have to wait till samsung rolls out a US update?
Also if I can use the UK rom, which one should I use?
Thanks!

You can't flash any thing from a non epic touch 4g unless you want a brick ...the international is gsm please read the dev section really good it doesn't sound like you know what your doing ....

In general, anything in the news/wherever about ICS labeled "Galaxy S II" has little to do with this phone. Only things Specifically labeled for the SGSII Epic Touch 4G are relevant.
We have different hardware, most importantly radios, so the software is pretty much deadly to our phones.
And yes, if you read around a bit in general section, you'll see a thread started about twice a day with that same question.

DONT WANT A BRICK? Check here

As of right now, the roms for your S3 are not meant to be used on other S3 variants. Bricks might happens or a soft one might happen. Before flashing a Rom make sure you are in the right development section an you read the entire op, twice. Until other devs or experienced users find a way to make them cross compatible, please refrain from using other carriers S3 roms.

That's slick!:good:
hard brick - a pretty paperweight (tonight)
should have been more careful, soft bricked the phone, 2 times trying to change the dpi.
once trying to flash a rom - the rom flash, took it to QHSUSB_DLOAD mode, not impressed but i'll take this downtime as a time to relax.
Another way to avoid a brick; Don't use a mod, theme, tool or ROM until it's confirmed by multiple people in the community that it's working properly. Read the last 3-4 pages of a thread

I agree with you, I ended up with a soft brick stuck at the samsung glowing logo after trying to unroot because I got a crack the front plastic near the headphone jack. I managed to reset the flash counter and install the rom but odin failed at the end. Now I'm hesitant to flash another ROM. Anyone else here waiting for JellyBean Rom? Definitely take your time and always make sure your computer installs the drivers before doing anything! I got BB to exchange it for me since they couldn't get it to boot and the mystery crack wasn't my fault. I only had it for like 3 days IN A CASE TOO. Happy Flashing dudes.
I'm just glad i saw a forum for the gs3. I would've bricked my phone after i got it.
Another bricker my own fault went to unroot to take in for service and went and loaded a wrong .tar file of the stock system. Anyway...not looking for sympathy..just wanted to say thanks for the forum that gave me the tools to fix my mistake

No development?

I was thinking of giving LG another shot, and picking up this phone. I am surprised that there is still no development for yet. I'm not to sure that I want to pick this up anymore if it is locked down and still has no one working on a solution.

Wait what? Unlocked bootloader for AT&T version is available? Sorry, been out of the loop, this new excites me!
There has been significant progress on both the ATT and Sprint models, check the development threads in each of those respective sub-forums. Hopefully some of that will spill over into the international section here as well.
Not available. Not yet. But you can actually follow the development of it. And something might be happening tonight in the next 3-4 hours.

Yeah just finished reading the thread. Awesome! I'm going to hold out until the Rogers variant gets unlocked. Hopefully there will be a price drop too. Not that it is currently expensive. Looking forward to getting this phone for sure. I love my GNex, but the new nexus 4 just didn't tick my boxes the right way.
**Update**
I couldn't wait. I just ordered it Plus I got them to get it to me for $49 after a $50 MIR. Sounds like a fair price to me.

I was in the same boat. Though it looks more and more like there's just att and sprint development. Nothing at all for canadian version. And who knows if there will be any development. Ah well there's always a place to sell my phone and get an N4 if I get tired of it. Lol.
Sent from my LG-E971 using xda app-developers app
I am in the same boat (living in Canada), I want this phone too and the N4 didnt really do it for me besides the timely updates and being the first to get them. With the Optimus G being practically the same phone as the N4 I am very tempted to get this but without development for it, it is pretty much the only thing keeping me back from getting it.
I got the telus variant, and god this thing is blazing fast!
And, the bloatware from telus is realy kept to a minimum, only one link to download the app that recommends some apps. So, if you don't want any, you don't have any!
The interface is pretty much like the Samsung's one, but better. The additions of nice features like the menu on the drop down menu, the apps on the lock screen, things like that are pretty usefull. And, they put a backup utilities it there, nice touch!
the unlocked bootloader will bring most likely more fun and more open roms, but as of now, the stock rom is pretty good!
I am remaining hopeful that the development for this phone will come. The developer, or one of them, "thecubed" who put together the "FreeGee" exploit to unlock the bootloader has stated in his thread that the Canadian, and Korean variants will be next to get the treatment. In that order as well. Just a matter of time I think.

Well, from my "diagonal read" on the AT&T forum, it seems they already have the dump.

[Q] Hi! I'm new and don't understand a thing.

I recently am an owner of a SGS3. And it's quite a change if you have had a blackberry before.. ( Yes I know those things are things from hell ) Yet, I've seen things on the web about rooting and flashing rom's and mods etc. I read the Ref Guide which is stickied. But still.. I have no clue about it all. The only thing I want to do is have a ICS Status bar on my phone, you know the status bar with the blue icons. I've already downloaded one from the play store but that one is crap. Now, I am on Android 4.1.2. and yeah I really want some more and simple info. And definitely want the status bar.
Thanks in advance!

If I'm thinking correctly you would want something like CM10. 1 or AOKP or a tw rom that you can theme to look like ICS

Cm is a bad idea for someone who doesn't even know what it is or what anything in the reference guide is for that matter. The OP probably barely knows how to work android it seems. I prefer them to learn their phone before trying to root and flashing things I can see many part coming from them about their phone being dead and won't turn on.
Read some more and watch YouTube videos on this phone and learn what rooting/flashing custom roms are. For your phones sake. PM me with any questions and I will simply link you something to read.
T-Mobile SGS III
@OP, I do understand. I went from a blackberry to an HD2 and now to the sg3. I've hacked the heck out of all 3 devices. XDA is a most excellent place to learn all things android. Follow the advice given and read, read and read some more. If I, a 54 year old grandma can learn the ins and outs of all these phones, I know it's possible for anyone else to do it too.

I know I'm late to the party, but here's my two cents:
As far as I'm aware, all of the various guides (and toolkits) actually use the same method (although, the toolkit does have a tendency to bork the wifi). It's just really the packaging they come in. Whenever I recommend a guide to people, I always link this guide by Skunk Ape. It's intuitive and explains each step quite well, with pictures and clear instructions. I've never had someone come back to me asking for clarification after reading that guide.
Hope you enjoy your rooted phone!

Welcome to the Sprint forums! We're generally nice people. The only time you really see the ugly side is if you flash an international Rom to your phone (which bricks it, btw). That's when the sarcasm comes out.
Just stick to Roms made for our phones (d2spr, not i9300) and you'll be fine!
So after researching roms and reading/.watching reviews, it seems that blazer is closest to stock minus all the bloat/samsung stuff that is loaded by default. Is this correct, or would u guys recommend a different rom for a STOCK experience +tweaks/-bloat.
I swear if I bought an htc phone I wouldn't be quite as clueless.

Everyone on here would probably recommend a different rom. I'm currently running msg&chubbz rom. It's pretty stock, does have a lot of features from gs4. Does have "minit settings" which allow you to change battery icon/color, clock color/location, and some others, but besides these changes its pretty stock. I was clueless to s-offing my brothers evo lte, but I got it eventually. HTC phones are a little more confusing to most people.
