Hi,
I'm trying to get a caller ID app to work but when I select the Google TTS it sends me to the setting screen to install voice data and english is not listed, I know english data works becase of Google Navigation uses it just fine
Anyone know how I can work around this issue? (I know I can buy a TTS like SVOX but it isn't for my phone and they are cheap) This is on stock JB 4.1.1

Hi guys,
since latest Google Maps release, I noticed that Google Navigator turn by turn speaks a different voice. That's no more the Ivona I installed.
And it's GREAT.
I tried to remove Ivona, phone went back to Pico (awful).
Now, I was wondering...
is this new TTS included in Maps ?
Is it in ICS, just new Maps making use of it ?
Is there a way to save 200MB of storage by removing Ivona AND keeping the new TTS in Google Navigator ?
Thanks
Fabio

I'll answer to myself:
yes, it's a new thing in latest Google Maps.
If you install any TTS from market, even not downloading voice data but just selecting the new TTS in android options, Google Maps will use its own, great, TTS.
So I got my Nexus on a JB ROM (EOS from XDA).... and to my surprise... I lost all the prompts with the Voice Dialer app when used through my Bluetooth.
I was very upset.
But I wasn't about to give up. So I played around with settings and stuff.....
Came to a conclusion:
Under speech settings, under Text-to-speech output>
the Preferred Engine must be Pico TTS.
I have no idea why the Voice Prompts don't function with Google Text-to-speech... but I have encountered no side effects of having Pico TTS as the preffered engine.... even Google Now still functions.
Anyone have any idea why this fix works... and if its helped you?
I don't have a Pico TTS engine available, just Google TTS. Running Viscous 4.1.1 V1 ROM on Verizon LTE
And do voice prompts work for you?
I use SVOX to drive using Google Navigation, because the Android default engine does not support portuguese. It's been working fine since yesterday, appearently after I installed Waze. For some reason, I can no longer hear the streets names using Google Navigation. Only "turn left", "turn right" and stuffs like that.
I uninstalled Waze, but the issue keeps on. The SVOX TTS app is working fine, because I can test it by clicking the "Listen to Sample" in Android Settings.
My device is a Galaxy Nexus running 4.2.1 stock ROM. Any ideas to solve the problem?
Does someone know what APK I need to add or what to add back in? I cleaned up some Samsung stuff including S-Voice and apparently Google Voice Typing is not an option for me on 4.1.2 stock Fr. I did remove3 "Google Now" ... I bet that did it. Any idea how I can get good old "Google Voice Typing" back as an input method?
I'm pretty sure (but not 100% positive) that Voice Search is rolled into the actual Google Search app (which also houses Google Now), so you're likely correct in your assumption.
Google Voice Search is available on the Market and it works (I installed it to test), but it does not bring back my "Google Voice Typing" input option under Languages and Input / Keyboards. I backed everything up meticulously before removing anything, but cannot seem to get the little microphone back so I can give voice inputs to email etc. S-Voice doesn't fix this either
bump ... please help?
Wondering if anyone else is having this issue.... When I start google maps and start navigation, right away an error saying Google TTS (text to speech) stopped.... Click Ok and it will give me voice directions still... sometimes the voice will change for it self and even the units lol.....
Things I have tired :
- Had the journalist 4.3 so i went on PC companion and clicked repair... it automatically downloaded a new (proper version I would assume) generic version of 4.3 and flashed it..... same issue still
- Tried removing the update for Google maps and google TTS... and then updating it again... same issue
- If I change TTS to Pico TTS it will work fine.... its just the voice isn't as nice
Really its more of a preference thing, just irritating when something isn't working as it should....... Any things to try would be great ?
------Note: TTS was working great on 4.2------
Secondly:
The GPS... If the Icon is set as active, I noticed on 4.3 it doesn't appear till its using Google Maps.... Does this mean its off, but automatically becomes active when its needed ? Or is it on all the time and just letting you know its using the GPS ?
Wondering for battery life, haven't really gotten a chance to test both scenarios properly.....
