Hi all,
Hopefully this is not a questian thats already been asked, I couldnt find it.
I want to root and s-off my Desire Z to use it with another ROM, when I want to do the first step unlocking the bootloader via htcdev I'm stuck somewhere in the beginning. When I try to get the identifier token in the command prompt I get an error.
First about the phone:
Android version 2.3.3
HTC sense version 2.1
softwareversion: 2.42.405.4
S-on
Hboot 0.85.0013
What I first did was using the Quick root application from this forum: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1870652 to root the device with the universal exploit.
Later I wanted to unlock the bootloader so i followed the steps at the htcdev site. Everything works except when i type the command: 'fastboot oem get_identifier_token' in de command prompt I get a command error. After searching I found out that this probably has something to do with my hboot version. So I tried to update it with the RUU provided by htcdev, but the RUU says I have to update my device. My device says there is no update. (there is also a * indicating that the hboot should be updated when I select the HTC desire Z as the phone I want the bootloader to be unlocked, I select the HTC desire Z A7272)
When I try to unroot my device again with the quick root application it says my phone is allready unrooted.
Whats do I do wrong?
Many thanks for all the help I get!
The “Quick root application” is only for S-OFF devices. You are S-ON, you did not root your phone. That’s why the application says your phone is already unrooted.
I’m not sure about unlocking the bootloader per htcdev site. I think our device is not supported, only newer devices are. Our firmware doesn’t know the command, that’s why you get the error message. Someone please correct me if I’m wrong.
You have to S-OFF your phone first. There are some good guides on this site, just search.

Thanks! This means I have to follow another route.
Maybe someone else has an idea, otherwise I'll look for a different method.
Internet usually uses this order:
the basic steps will be:
1)unlock with htcdev
2)flash recovery
3)flash superuser root files.
4)rewrite the misc image with adb and downgrade to froyo
5)re-unlock htcdev hboot
6)re-flash recovery
7)re-flash superuser root files and flash unrevoked's "forever" s-off patch
But you think this is impossible for me?
our phones are supported but I don't recommend the htc offical method as it is sure to give you many headaches down the road. rooting your phone and gaining true soff is realitively easy, just google search "cyanogen vision root wiki" "xda wiki g2 root" "strawmetal root pdf"
read these guides, and when you feel comfortable go for it, every question you can think of has been answered on xda so search around a bit. if you need extra help log onto freenode #g2root

I do think the desire z is supported. It is listed: http://www.htcdev.com/bootloader
however, it is starred: * Indicates HBOOT update required.
update:
then use the new RUU next to it to enable the unlocking capability.
HTC EU 2.42.405.2 PC1011000 Download
Thanks for correcting me.
I was wrong, it IS possible to unlock our phone using htcdev.
However it is not recommended. See for example this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1750978
Thanks!
I tried to use this (in my screen there is no RUU next to the phone but this RUU is listed in the first screen you get before step 1 unloucking bootloader), as indicated in my first post, bur this RUU gives an error:
It first wants to get my ROM to 2.42.405.2 before it can update hboot. My ROM version is 2.42.405.4.
So when I use the RUU the program says I dont have the newest ROM so I should try to get that by updating my phone via settings/software update. However my phone indicates that there is no update available for my phone.
Weird stuff..

I had the same issue on another device (Wildfire S). It is because the tool was made in the time when 2.42.405.2 was the latest ROM. I think the only solution is to wait till HTC updates their tool or to downgrade your phone. However, if you manage to downgrade your phone, you are halfway to get a S-OFF without htcdev
Thanks for all the help I got!
I'll post here what I've done to root my phone in case someone has the same problem.
First I downgraded my phone, the only guide that could help me with that is this one:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1178912
After that I rooted my phone I installed the cyanogen mod 7.2 and for that I used this guide:
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/TMobile_G2:_Rooting
If you follow this guides to the letter you should be oke. I'm really happy I did it!

Note: This works for some people, but I suggest you don't update, because majority of the people are having problems.
theq86 has reported his phone bricked.
Conclusions:
1- S-ON & Bootloader Locked
Your HBOOT will stay to the version 1.08.0000.
You will not be able to unlock the bootloader until HTCDev updates its RUU.
2- S-ON & Bootloader Unlocked (HBOOT 1.08.0009)
Your HBOOT will be downgraded to 1.08.0000 and your bootloader will be locked again. You will lose root and CWM.
You will not be able to unlock the bootloader until HTCDev updates its RUU.
3- S-OFF
Your HBOOT will stay (or be updated/downgraded) to 1.08.0000.
You don't have to worry about the bootloader cause it is unlocked forever.
For those who performed the update and are S-ON and want to unlock their bootloader, three solutions :
1- S-OFF your phone with an XTC-Clip
2- Wait for a software S-OFF (they are getting closer and closer)
3- Wait that HTCDev updates its RUU. We should write to them to be sure they are aware of this problem.
Want to get rid of the notifications telling you to update?
1. Download update (to the phone).
2. When the phone asks to install update, plug your phone to the computer in Disk Drive mode.
3. Run Winrar and browse to sdcard/download and enter OTA_Marvel_S_HTC_Europe_2.13.401.3-2.13.401.2_release_237041qqcw21hxt5vkhdz6.zip.
4. Inside you will find file firmware.zip. Unpack it anywhere.
5. Run Winrar and enter unpacked firmware.zip.
6. Click INFO button and go to SFX label.
7. Click "Remove the already existing module from the archive" and OK.
8. Delete all files except "android-info.txt". Save file (firmware.zip).
9. Replace firmware.zip in original OTA update.
10. Run update in your phone.
11. You will see yellow exclamation mark in triangle which means failure.
12. Remove the baterry for one second.
13. Turn on. Phone will show smtng like "update file is corrupt. download again?" - click NO. Turn off automatic check for updates in settings.

Source: [OTA Update] 2.13.401.2 => 2.13.401.3
Why is this update bad?
Why is this update bad? (background info)
HTC included it's newest radio and hboot with the update. Actually nothing to worry about, but there's a problem regarding software version numbers.
For example (HTC EU example):
My WFS shipped EU 2.3.3 (sw no. 1.33.401.2)
Then came the FOTA to EU 2.3.5 (sw no. 2.13.401.2)
And some days past a new FOTA (sw no. 2.13.401.3)
the software numbers are the problem here. HTCDEV provides the RUU updater for unlockable hboot only for 2.13.401.2.
As we know, HTC will not allow us to downgrade even a signed ruu. Thus, we will get a main version is older error.
This leads to the conclusions above.
------------------------------------
Will there be a way to re-unlock the phone?
HTC wrote:
Unfortunately once the device has updated to the most recent software it cannot be reverted to the previous update allowing the device to be unlocked. I can escalate this issue as a feature request to see if a further Hboot update can be released in the future for users who may have missed the opportunity to unlock their devices.
I hope that this information meets with your requirements. Should you have any further questions please do not hesitate to contact me again.

3) I rebooted to bootloader mode and my hboot is 1.08.0099 unlocked
Works fine for me ...
I've S-OFF'd my phone with xtc clip. Should I update my phone?
Also, my Hboot is 0.90.0000
What are the benefits of
Hboot 1.08.0009 as compared to 0.90.000?!
Thanks

I'm qurious about this as well. I'm S-OFF, but haven't installed any custom ROM yet, only Link2SD. So I should be able to install the update without problems, right?

I'm not promising anything. I told HTCDEV about the problems in general. Maybe I can get them to provide a RUU for 2.13.401.3 so that everyone who updated this can unlock again. I'm currently negotiating with HTC and waiting for an answer.

The easiest way is to edit the software number to a lower one. The How-To is in the forum here:

Only do the steps before the ruu extract

UPDATED POST #2 IMPORTANT
Hi there!
I need a little help.. My problem is that I can't remove CWM 5.0.2.8 from my Marvel.
It is S-OFF with XTC Clip.
USB Debugging is ON.
Fast Boot is ON.
I have stock ROM 2.3.5
I chose Charge Only.
I use Marvel Auto-Installers. It detect my Marvel.. I press uninstall recovery (HTC original). Then my phone restarts. After booting I shut down and restart with vlume down pressed to check what recovery I have and... surprise: still CWM 5.0.2.8!
Any little help will be appreciated.
Then please download the auto-installers new.
Go to the folder installed the auto-installers and you will find a orig.img and a fastboot.exe
Restart your phone into the fastboot mode and open terminal. Navigate to the fastboot.exe and execute this command:
fastboot flash recovery orig.img
Thanks a lot!
sending 'recovery' <3100KB>... OKAY
writing 'recovery' ... FAILED (remote: not allowed)
Any ideas?

No, this command must work for unlocked bootloader too.
Have you relocked bootloader? Or check if u really unlocked!!!
I don't know how my bootloader is.. My phone is S-Off by XTC Clip and I have a stock ROM 2.3.5 installed in CWM Recovery from a zip file..
Ähm, i think the StockHBOOT does not support the flash recovery command, if i'm right
Or what HBOOTversion you have?

of course it does support. as you see in helbets post. just fastboot rejects flashing. which should not happen if he is s-off
Can anyone confirm whether this updated ROM can be rooted using the usual methods (GingerBreak/ZergRush) ?
Thanks.

as far as I know the unlock method of htc dev doesn't give you s-off (which seems to be confirmed by yourself saying you're still s-on). S-on means "security on" what in other words means you won't be able to flash a custom recovery (if I'm not mistaken here).
You said that you have read every thread here about this - so you should know as it's mentioned all over this forum (that htc dev isn't the best method...). For how - and if - you still could get there I''m not too sure but you probably need to do an RUU, downgrade etc to do the suggested method (of the two corresponding threads here) instead of the htc dev thing.
But as I said: I_m not sure if you still can - probably someone has experience here?

ah, yes, thx for clearifying - so you can't get control over the partitions or what does it mean?
The htc dev method gives a different output to revo or alpha, if it says s-on with unlocked somewhere then fastboot is the only method that will work for flashing a custom recovery and although some things like the revovery partition are unlocked for flashing, some important things like radio aren't hence the s still being on........
I presume if it says s-on and locked then yes you have probably gone wrong somewhere and locked it again.
Theres not many people on here that have used the htc dev unlock tool i don't think so support might be a bit thin as we don't know much about it, try running through the htc dev unlock method again to hopefully get it unlocked again and then flash cwm by the fastboot method.
If it says locked then i can't think of any other way, downgrading to hboot 1.01.0001in order to use revolutionary may work but i'm not sure if you can or not as i have personally never done it.

i already tried buzz downgrade a long ago.i used the method as it is told on the website..:good:
but don't know why it doesn't work properly i have no idea why this don't work either. i read number of threats regarding it and i tried to google
with the errors that came with buzz downgrade. something just goes wrong with it in the first step but it just doesn't get completed. the phone does not respond when i ran the buzz downgade utility even after installing the htc driver from the buzz downgrade itself (don't remember exactly that it is explained over the internet). i did clearly everything whatever is written in the threats about how to use the buzz downgrade but in vain i stopped it trying.
i still have the setup of buzz downgrade in my laptop.:silly:
but why it doesn't work i don't know..and you know what i read that threat too in the past.
may be it is the problem of the bootloader that it is locked..

During your procedure, did you ever achieve the S-OFF ?
You need to downgrade from 1.02.0000 to 1.01.0001 to use Revolutionary.
Try this guide.
If you want revolutionary will automatically download the recovery and install it on your phone.
After gaining S-OFF if you can't get Unrevoked working in order to gain root.
Use this or try SuperOneClick.
Good luck:good:
Try the link in my Sig, it should help. First, I recommend running an RUU and relocking your bootloader using fastboot oem lock.
Then try the debranding and rooting guide in the Sig.

this is the thing i already tried a long ago. when the wildfire was updated to 2.2 version of android ,it changed into "wildfire (buzz) 2.2.1, with HBOOT 1.01.0002"..now as the threats i read there in the past, i can't run the revolutionary or any other method. because the htc has applied some sort of lock on the new bootloader. revolutionary gave some error which i don't remember as per the threats. in the mean time nobody able to find the solution of this new 1.01.0002 bootloader unlocking. then i that time i heard of htc dev website and in that time i used that website to unlock my bootloader and alas it got unlocked and my bootloader has been changed to 1.02.000.. but now i again find that my bootloader is locked may be.. how i don;t know about that.. i tried to run that method of buzz downgrade number of times thoroughly again and again as if u read in the thread above it give some sort of error and does't do anything for me. so i asked what else i do then this , again do i need go to htc dev website to unlock bootloader ??

I never tried htcdev method so i have no idea about that. You should probably try their method once again,if that doesn't work, use the Gold card tool to downgrade the HBOOT using this guide.
Code:
Step 1: run step1.bat from the package. This will downgrade your MISC partition to allow for the RUU downgrade.
At the end, GoldCardTool will start up, to allow you to create a goldcard which you will need before starting Step 2
Step 2: run step2.bat from the package. This will downgrade your ROM version to HTC WWE Froyo for Wildfire (unbranded).
If you get a Customer ID error while doing this, your goldcard is not working!
Create a new goldcard and re-run step2
or follow usaff22's guide.

I told you,you need to downgrade from 1.02.0000 to 1.01.0001 to use Revolutionary.
Did you make any Gold-Card thing ?

You didn’t answer me,What is the information on your HBOOT screen?
Power off the phone and ensure the phone is completely off. Then hold POWER + VOL-DOWN buttons together until the white HBOOT screen appears. Tell us your HBOOT info.
You are getting Customer ID error,It’s a bad Goldcard. You will have to create a new Goldcard.
>Connect it to your computer using an SD Adapter and format the card to FAT32 file system once again.
>Redownload and reextract the package.
>Follow this guide to create the Goldcard. It’s a bit more detailed.
Before doing anything download CCleaner and TFC and run them.TFC will ask you to reboot.Reboot the PC.
Now make the Goldcard.Good luck.

not really clear to me also - if I got him right he initially has been on 1.01.0002 (because of the Android update). Because there hasn't been a possibility by revolutionary yet at that time and for that bootloader he unlocked it at the htcdev site what made it 1.02.000.
But I'm a bit confused, too, so a detailed information of the fastboot screen would really help (or a pic).

As it says, your Bootloader is still LOCKED.
After using HTC dev unlock tool your HBOOT 1.01.0002 got changed to 1.02.000 while Bootloader is still locked.
i.e you probably missed some steps.
Hello.
For 2 days now, I have been trying to unlock a DHD,with not much luck so far. (AAHK being disabled just when I needed it.)
I am now trying to use the official HTCDev bootloader unlocker, but it doesn't seem to work either.
So far, my rom is still stock. (The phone tells me it is :
sense 3.0,android 2.3.5, ver 3.12.405.1 ,
HBOOT 2.00.0027
Radio 26.14.04.28_M )
The phone was never branded or somlocked.
It SHOULD be supported by HTCDev. However, when I run the RUU update, It asks me if I want to go from 3.12.405.1 to 3.13.000.0
I say yes.
The phone reboot to Fastboot, and then I get an error 191, saying that my rom is not supported and I should wait for an update.
Since it supposed to be supported already, there will be no update of course.
Earlier, I had tried to manually downgrade following this guide :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1424023
I had gone to the end of the guide, having the message "your card is now gold",but couldn't seen to use it to downgrade. (Is there a specific way to use a goldcard ? I just got to bootloader and it seems to load something ... but in the end the hboot version doesn't change.)
I kept the goldcard as it was, and used another micros SD.
I did a factory reset before trying HTC dev unlocker.
Now I am a bit lost. I have tried to find what to do by reading posts, faqs, and generally searching here ot with google.
But I seem to go from outdated to incomplete guides, and / or lack the basics to understand what I read.
Does anyone know what my next step should be ? What could prevent HTCdev unlocker from working ?

You need to update your hboot for HTCDEV tool to work. I don't know why but the links in the site seem to have been removed thou the link is still alive.
Try to use this tool (that will guide you through the process) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2133336 or use this tool (that will unlock the bootloader, flash CWM recovery and root) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2169515

I tried both those utility, but they merely download and launch the same RUU update. It will detect a 1.00.000.00 image version, try to update to 3.13.something,and then tell me it can't due to unsuported rom.
I think the problem might be that I switched my version 1.00.000 manually when I was trying to downgrade. I'LL try reversing that, but if anyone has another idea, please ...
Edit :
Nope, still stuck.
I changed back the misc version to 2.00.0027, but the HTC dev ruu update still tells me that my rom is not supported.
Can't update hboot, can't get token, can't unlock

I found what was wrong for me !
It came from my first try at manually downgrading. Except the misc version is not the HBOOt version, it's the rom version. Following the guide, I had set it to 1.00.000.0
I retraced the same step, except I set it to 3.12.405.1 ( the version of the rom ).
And it worked !

No.
After setting the rom version back to 3.12.405.1, I used the HTC unlocker to unlock my Hboot.
The automatic script ( easyUnlock and EasyAceUnlock ) didn't seem to work for me (Error while trying to get root.)
So I just installed Clockwork mod recovery. I don't really need to be root anyway. I just want some JellyBean taste.
But now I seem to be having a new problem. I tried to install a rom ( Wiping everything I can from CWM before ) but my phone won't boot. It is stuck to the green HTC logo.
I will be looking through new post from this forum to try to find a solution, while downloading other roms.
I wonder if some (or all) roms require you to be root to work.

Indeed. Now starting the slow process of finding the right rom.
I will regret not being able to flash a radio ( since I'm not S-Off ) but at least I be able to try new roms.
Thanks !

No offense against the guys that write these toolkits to make it "easier" but, stay away from it if you can, you don't really learn anything by using these toolkits.
That said,
Try and unlock the bootloader manually, as shown once when you sign up to htcdev.com and follow their instructions to get bootloader unlocked. OR
You can go for Sunshine S-OFF ($25) it roots, unlocks bootloader and gives S-OFF all-in-one.

It technically only temp-roots. You still have to fully root using a custom recovery or adb push. However, once the bootloader is unlocked, that is fairly simple.
I would actually suggest that as an upgrade, though. It would be nice if, at the tail end of the process, Sunshine would offer to permanently root the phone.
Hi.
Now I unlocked the bootloader manually and installed twrp as custom recovery. After this I installed SuperSU over twrp to get root.
*//
All works fine, but I have a little problem.
Now i cant take screenshots. If I try, I get the message that no screenshot can be taken because the app can´t save them.
Does anyone have some ideas how I can fix it?
//*
Fixed "Created a folder called screenshot1 and delete the other screenshot folder. Once it is deleted remove the "1" so it still only Screenshot."
Additionally, I want to make the SD-Card writeable for all apps, has someone a link to tutorial?

You want to unlock your bootloader or sim unlock ? Be more specific please. S-OFF I needed to flash firmware, radio and some audio mods. Maybe u can do it here http://www.htcdev.com/bootloader/ or to ask the owner to send you unlock_token file.

You're a bit confused. Based on your other posts, I don't think anyone really told you that you "need s-off to unlock the bootloader" ( as that statement is not completely true - so hold on and I'll explain why). Rather, you are incorrectly trying the following method to unlock the bootloader, and this particular method requires s-off:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2708571
The method above clearly requires s-off. This is an absolute truism, and no amount of trying it over and over is going to work. However, this is not the only method to unlock the bootloader.
You've already been advised, that you can unlock the bootloader s-on using the HTCDev.com unlock process. Again, this works perfectly fine when s-on. If you need further guidance, the following thread includes very good instructions.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/htc-one-m8/general/vomerguides-m8-bootldr-unlock-s-off-t2800727
But note that the guide is quite a bit outdated. The portion about unlocking the bootloader is still relevant, and therefore still a really good guide. But once you get past that point, you will need to note the following:
a) When you go to install TWRP custom recovery, you should install the current version 3.1 from here (don't use the TWRP version linked in the guide - it's outdated and will cause problems.
b) If you intend to root the current ROM, you will want to use the current stable version 2.79 (link in the guide automatically goes to the latest stable SuperSU version, so you are okay there.\
c) The remainder of the guide (S-off, SuperCID) isn't necessary for most purposes, such as root, custom ROMs, etc. But it should be noted that the s-off method referenced (firewater) not longer works, and not amount of trying will make it work (sunshine is the only valid s-off method, and costs $25 US).
If you have any other issues or questions about the process, post the specific questions to this thread, and folks will be happy to try to help.
