So when i got CM10 nightly builds they had the emoji like the iphones have, now with the new cm10 builds they have the android emojis and its very difficult to tell what the other person sent. is there a way i can use the emojis from the old mms.apk on the new nightlys. ive tried replacing the files in the new mms.apk but i cant find a way to export it to an .apk it would be so appreciated if someone can help me with this. i have been trying to get this to work for a while now.

You should be able to do this without any decompiling/recompiling. Open up the old and new APKs with WinRAR - don't extract them, just browse inside of them. Find the files in the both, delete them from the new APK, copy them over from the old APK.
Install the new APK back to the phone using a root explorer (or flashable zip) and reboot.
Done this before and it works. I also have absolutely no idea what is going on whenever I get one of the Android emoticons or smilies. Can't stand them.
This might seem stupid but did ya look in settings within the messaging app and make sure emoji support was checked? Sometimes its set by default and sometimes not!

That's not what he's asking. He wants to know how to replace the rather confusing green Android emoji with the default iPhone-esque set.

Don't put the modified APK in the ROM zip. Find an empty flashable and put the MMS.apk in the /system/app and flash just that.

Hrm, flash file looks good. Emojis seem replaced. Didn't flash it myself though. From what I can tell this should do it. Did you clear your cache + dalvik cache while in recovery? Just a stab in the dark.
Here's the commit for the emoji change, seems that nothing else was changed outside the MMS APK: http://review.cyanogenmod.com/#/c/22424/

so i tried wiping the cache and dalvik cache and then flashing. didnt work. flashing then did the wipe. still stupid alien emojis. its just when my friends send me like the face emojis i feel like dumb asking which one it was. coming from an iphone and all. but if it isnt any trouble to you could you make a flashable mms.apk for me with the orignal emojis. i saw someone else asked on the cm10 nightly build how to change them but no one replied to their post. im betting a lot of people like the old school emojis better than the alien ones.

Are you positive your friends are sending you emoji faces and not standard emoticons when you receive these? In your file you replaced the emoji, but not the emoticons. The emoticons have always been green Android guys.

Hey guys i dont no much about theming so i was wondering if someone can pull the blue outline from the honeycomb fusion theme. The one that pops up with every popup on the theme. thats all i need and want or if someone can point me in the rightt direction to get it myself. Thankyou.
The blue outline on popups is part of the images as a hole. Just look in the drawable-hdpi folder of both frameworks

You should only be copy and pasting these from the Honeycomb frameworks over to the framework your modding. Don't unzip (extract) anything, just OPEN the archive using either WinRAR or 7zip (I use 7zip personally) and just copy/paste.. Extracting and attempting to re zip the frameworks are going to cause trouble.
Ok thanx ill try that when i get ahold of my pc unless i can do it through the phone
I've done some zip work through the Epic using Root Explorer/Astro/ES File Explorer at different stages to get it all to work and its a pain in the butt. You would be much better off just using your PC, take you a whole 5 minutes to pull those pop up pngs mentioned by p3dr0maz and paste them into your framework and flash it/ADB push it.

yep, you need to update apktool for use with Android 4.0
edit: more specifically...
-Wrong version of apktool (get the latest)
-Wrong verison of apktool dependancies files (same site)
-Wrong version of aapt.exe in Android SDK (get latest SDK)
Alright awesome I'll look into it tonight after work

I have the latest version of all of that and can decompile with apktool. The problem is when I build the new apk and copy over the edited files and push back to the phone the app won't work.

I pulled the music apk, edited it, rebuilt it, and put the edited files back in the original apk. I did that because I don't know how to sign my own apk so I just used the already signed one with some edited png and xml files. The thing I don't understand is that I pulled an apk once and opened it via 7zip and edited some things, pushed it back and everything was fine (changed out some icons on the contacts.apk)
Do you know where an up-to-date theming guide can be found? I'm very interested in making my own themes instead of requesting themers to make one. Learning experience and all that jazz.
Thanks.

If u properly recompile the apk then yes u can .. u edit it all the XML s and pngs in the apk then recompile.. then drop the recompiled apk into the system app section of the rom u r using unless its the framework Res apk or other framework apk.. once u do this put the new rom zip back into your phone and flash in recovery ... bottom line I'm not the most experienced themer in the forums I just got the phone yesterday so its gonna take time for me to begin theming anything.. that being said perhaps if this thread stays open and more experienced themers can chime in with some tips and advice

Actually, GoogleMusic.apk is found in data/app not in system, at least in the ROM I am on. But, am I correct in assuming that I can do the same thing in this instance?
Furthermore, is there no way to theme a single application? Do I need to always theme an app, place it back into the ROM zip, and reflash said ROM?
Can I make my own flashable zip file for a single app?
Sorry to ask so many questions, I just really like tinkering with things and I would really like to get good at theming.

wut? i've never done what you guys have when it comes to compiling/decompiling and replacing stuff. i'm not so sure that works, but i'll take your word for it for now since i've never tried it either. in theory, you can decompile and change xml, recompile and replace that xml, but not if you're dealing with the actual xml folder in apks. your resources change when you mess with that. this is the same for changing smali, except something else changes (it's been a bit since i've dealt with actual dev stuff).
also, it's a big waste (and sometimes troublesome) to flash an entire ROM to update one or a few apks. making one for just testing out things in \system\ will save you time and frustration. you can also make a backup easier for if something bootloops you
Success!!!
All right, first and foremost, thank you immensely for all the suggestions Kevin and others as well.
Here's what I did. I searched the ROM zip to no avail, but then found the apk in the gapps zip. I took it out of there, decompiled, messed around with just a few png files, recompiled and put it back into the gapps zip. Flashed it and it worked. Problem is, only a couple of the edits I made showed up which brings me to my next issue, ICS optimised apps have a tonne of "drawable-***" folders. Drawable, drawable-hdpi, drawable-hdpi-v8,v9,v11, drawable-xdpi, etc....ad nauseum.
I am not messing with any smali code, xml files, or .9.png files yet as I don't know what smali does, xml is a headache, and I have heard horror stories about .9.png files.
I'm going to dink around and see if I can sort out what items need to be changed for my current dpi setting (241) and will report back any findings, but probably not tonight as I have an early course in the morning followed by work.

See this is how I read it too. I believe the OP means that he's making changes and then replacing the apk in the flashable zip. Not actually replacing the edited xmls in the original apk. Glad I'm not the only one that read it that way though

no decompiling is necessary for tweaking pngs.
smali code is for messing with policies, etc.
.9.png files can be a pain if you don't recompile the apk correctly.
and this should help with your dpi as far as what to edit so you can see it...

You probably wont be able to add any, you can change the current ones by editing the apk, signing it then installing it. Once you open up the apk (with 7zip, winrar etc.) look inside the drawable-hdpi folder. Thats probably where the emoticons are kept.

Adding icons to whatsapp
Hey Guys has anyone tried adding new icons into the default whatsapp?
Or do the modded versions allow adding additional GIF'S to be added to the instant messenger?
Thanks
yes i have tried it, but it's useless since the recipient of the emoticon should have the "moded" version too, so that he could see the emoticon
Just wanted to add that Ive noticed the Iphone has new icons and I can view them on my phone which dont have those icons :/

Good idea, but not practical
In order to install an apk, it must be properly signed and with a password that only the developers know. If you own the app though, you will still need to to decompile and recreate the apk structure by turning the directories of the zip into an android structure, since the compiling will change pretty much everything.
Worst part of it all, if you somehow manage to change and install the app, only you will be able to see it since only the apk installed on your phone has those custom emoticons.
Cheers :good:

First you need an AOSP based rom. I used the latest CM 10.1 so I could have Quick Reply, emojis, and mms group messaging. Not sure if this works with other AOSP roms, but it should.
You're going to need three files from the AOSP rom:
/system/app/MMS.apk
/system/app/TelephonyProvider.apk
/system/framework/mms-common.jar*
*(the files we need may be in framework.jar if the rom you're using doesn't have this file)
and two files from your TW rom:
/system/app/SecTelephonyProvider.apk
/system/framework/framework2.jar (make sure it's framework2.jar)
Now decompile everything except MMS.apk. That one's fine as is.
Now we're going to move some files around.
First is framework2.jar and mms-common.jar
Delete /smali/com/google/android/mms in framework2.jar. Yes the entire folder.
Now we're going to take the folder
Code:
/smali/com/google/android/mms
from mms-common.jar and copy/move it to the framework2.jar folder
Code:
/smali/com/google/android/mms
Now is SecTelephonyProvider.apk and TelephonyProvider.apk
Navigate to the following folder in TelephonyProvider.apk:
Code:
smali\com\android\providers\telephony
and copy the following files:
Code:
MmsProvider.smali
MmsSmsDatabaseHelper$LowStorageMonitor.smali
MmsSmsDatabaseHelper.smali
MmsSmsProvider.smali
SmsProvider.smali
Copy them to the following folder in SecTelephonyProvider.apk:
Code:
smali\com\android\providers\telephony
Recompile framework2.jar and SecTelephonyProvider.apk.
Place MMS.apk and SecTelephony.apk in /system/app/
Place framework2.jar in /system/framework/
Delete SecMms.apk from /system/app/
If you try to use Messaging at this point, it will probably open, but MMS won't work.
Now the most important part!
Note: This will delete all of you messages so make sure you back them up!!!!!!
On your device, navigate to
Code:
/data/data/com.android.providers.telephony/databases/
and delete the three files:
Code:
mmssms.db
mmssms.db-shm
mmssms.db-wal
You should now have a fully functional AOSP MMS!
Here's some other MMS apps that should work with this:
Note: Flash these AFTER this mod.
Android 4.2.1 Bubble MMS.apk quick Emoji + Popup!(Thanks msk for the link)
I've attached a flashable zip for LK3, but be warned IT WILL WIPE ALL OF YOUR MESSAGES!!!!!
UPDATE: I updated the zip to remove the stock messaging app. I believe that's why some people were having issues. Thanks boostmx.
UPDATE(1-24): Added revert to restore stock TW MMS. It will also wipe your messages so backup!
UPDATE(1-26): It seems as though group messaging is still hit or miss. From sparkerjc:
Just to clarify this, since I got PM about it: The 1-18 version of cm10.1 has working group MMS, therefore to complete the mod that framework should be considered safe to pull from. However, even with that framework group messages from some iPhones (apparently iPhone 4) show up blank in Touchwiz Roms on Verizon. Not sure about AT&T but since this is the thread getting the views, I'm posting it here.
Secondly, there seems to be some confusion regarding "Working mms" MMS is not just pictures, in the group messages the apps convert text to be sent as MMS to more then one recipient. So while "MMS is working", sometimes "group texts sent as mms" may not be working. Every group text will be sent as mms, but not every mms is a group message. Make sense?
Cool.

UPDATE(03-03): Updated flashable zips with latest CM 10.1 build. Also included one that doesn't wipe messages.

When going from TW > AOSP or from AOSP > TW you need to remove the messaging databases because they need to be recreated otherwise you'll have FCs. So use the "Wipe messages" zip. But if you already have AOSP and just want to upgrade to the latest one, you don't need to remove the databases so use the "Non wipe messages" zip..

Thank you for sharing this
Not for sure why anyone would want AOSP MMS on TW, but whatever. Lol.
Anyone worried about messages, just download SMS Backup.
Thanks for the share.

Quick Reply, emoji, and mms group messaging are the three I hear most people talk about.
Thanks! This is exactly what I am looking for. Will give it a shot.
Edit: Will yours only work on LK3?
Touchwiz Unread Count
Does this retain the unread counts and lockscreen notifications for messages?

That would be my biggest thing. And I'm sure it doesn't. It's stupid for it to not wake the screen if you get a message. Not so bad on this phone with a LED indicator, but on my S2, it drove me insane.
This looks awesome, thanks for this! Going to do this later so I can have 4.2 MMS and group messaging on my Beans ROM. I love AOSP but I hate the bugs so I stick with TW and theme it like AOSP.
This works beautifully! Thank you!!
First off, THANK YOU Loserskater for taking the time to figure this out and share it with us! This is the only thing missing to make my TW rom complete.
I'm new to this whole thing so I've never decompiled anything before. Any forum/website recommendations regarding how to go about the decompiling process?

Oh OK, so the decompiling info is just for other devs?

Google baksmali apk. There is an XDA tutorial on how to decompile and compile apks.
Does this require to send MMS twice like the other mod described? Send once, then selected failed mms and forward to complete the sending?
Flashed this on CSROM and get a FC. Deleted the files. D/L again. Reflashed. Still no go.

This one works the first time. Haven't had a single issue so far. It even rotates MMS pictures properly!

Did you try a dalvik cache wipe after flashing?
Since the Mms.apk is not modified, does this mean any 4.2 mms will work by dropping it in? Specifically I like inverted mms, so is there one that would work with this?

It most likely will, but I have not tried it.
Cleared cache and dalvik. Still no go.

A while ago I tried to find a fix for using dark themes (saves battery life) but MMS text always turned out black on black. Making it unreadable.
So after a some investigations I am happy to say I have a fix that works with sending images
The CM10.1 version works with Shpongle for me fine so far.

i use the one from black jelly 2.2
Curious,
just installed this and the icon on the homescreen is still that green default native app one.
I really dig that ics colored icon, is there a way to change it within the app as opposed to using something like desktop visualizer? I'm looking for it to install that icon by default.
I know i can decompile the apk and change it that way. But I'm prepping to do a reinstall on my pc and don't want to install an apk tool till after.
If not that's cool, just figured I'd ask

i dont think u can change the Icon of the Messages app ... the icons come from Framework-res.apk .. you have to change it there or use a theme :good::fingers-crossed:
Here's another hmm for y'all. And I'll mention that I pulled the native mms apk from the phone first.
Does anybody have the app going back to the light colors after a reboot? I still have the native apk but it's on my sd card. So I can't see where it could be influencing the dark apk. But sure as the sun rises in the east, when I have to reboot for some reason it reverts. If I reinstall the dark apk it all goes back to what is supposed to be, and I retain all my messages. Just curious if it's just me. Or something I did
Oh, figured out how to get the ics icon to show on your homescreen.
Before you flash your Rom, go into system/app and pull the green mms.apk, and replace it with the dark version. When the phone boots it'll use that apk and viola. Ics icon and dark mms.
Hope this helps somebody. Personally I think the dark version actually sends the msgs faster. Maybe it's in my head, but it sure felt that way,
Update: for clarification, this needs to be done on your pc. Don't have to unzip the file or anything, just open it as you would a normal file/folder. I is definitely say to do this before transferring the Rom file to you device. It seems to take forever otherwise. Plus one on the phone, it seems you can't change the name of the file. Which I'd definitely recommend. Just name it "mms.apk" the device seems to take care of the permission stuff itself.

Using root explorer you can just paste it into the system/app folder, also if you use Titanium backup then once its installed you can incorporate the update into the rom. This means it will always boot with your new .apk
I have just installed the BlackOut clear theme with mms.apk and all the rest. You can install all the zips etc for GAPs as well

That's interesting.I was using smanager to do the same thing. But whenever I'd rebootthe phone it would revert to the native style. The only way I've gotten it to stick permanently is with the method I mentioned before

You need to rename and redo the permissions as well, but all that can be done on phone with root explorer.

Just replacing the one in the Rom with the dark one and flashing the Rom did it for me. No permission stuff, just renamed it. And flashed the Rom. aside from pulling the native app from the Rom zip. That is

http://www.slimroms.net/index.php/downloads is where I got mine from, there is a little variation from rom to rom but generally pretty mint. Plenty of dark gapps in there as well, I used most of the 4.4 ones in the SlimRom except for the camera which I got from a normal google apk.
I'm working on a apktool guide so you could always read and use that  .
Do you want direct links for apk only to save bandwidth? or are the rom files fine?
Thanx for sharing!!!... But i cant find mms.apk anywhere... Is it in rom zip??? If yes, plz if u have, can u share the direct links for apk...

Hi Rohov, its in the rom.zip all the mms.apk s are in the /system/app folder. You can use any zip program to open them and pull the apks out. Once they are on your phone you may need to change the permissions to -r -rw -rw itll make sense in the root browser if not post me.
Here as requested is my current fav mms.apk tho.
