In ClockworkMod Recovery, can someone please clarify what is the difference between these two wipes :
Wipe data / factory reset
Wipe cache partition
I've just tried to flash a new build of AOKP without using none of these and i had problems like the google bar disappeared from my home screen and force closing in some apps.
I know it is recommended to do both wipes when updating the rom, but i just wanna know what is the difference between them and if i can try to wipe one before another to do a dirty flash.
Thanks
Wipe data/factory reset: formats /cache, and clears /data but leaves your "sdcard" untouched. This method ALSO wipes dalvik-cache as well, and is essentially the same as starting from scratch.
Wipe cache: this only formats /cache. Nothing else.
Dirty flash: don't wipe anything, because the ROM flashing process takes care of the necessary parts (like /system and then it rebuilds dalvik-cache on boot). Bit with aokp, you have to reflash gapps as well every time irrc. Also, there are no guarantees that you won't have issues. If you do, it is up to you to trouble shoot them yourself OR clean flash (factory reset) and then see if the see issues persist and then you can report problems.

Full wipe means:
data/factory reset
cache wipe
dalvik cache wipe
wipe system in mounts and storage
wipe cache in mounts and storage
Wiping system is very important as a flash is usually an update to a different and improved system version! ( for instance from KKA to LA4).
When getting into a bootloop pull the battery, reinsert battery and go in recovery mode and wipe data/factory reset and cache and reboot, done

Why would you format or "Wipe" the Cache partition 3 times? Just curious...
i got a bootloop after installing google apps. I've already installed cyanogen but after installing the Google Apps, cynaogenmod does startup and its a black screen.
Can you please help?

this is no support thread. please use forum search. bootloop problem is known and easy to solve.
I've had my nexus since December and have tried several ROMs since then--not a total noob, but there's a lot I don't know.
I've been wondering what part of the memory is left untouched by the factory wipes that I've been doing in preparation to flash a ROM? And is there any need to periodically wipe that portion of the memory to remove any remnants of ROMs or deleted apps or anything else that is potentially problem causing or just eating up memory space?
And would your answer explain this: I once did a factory wipe and then accidentally selected reboot before flashing the new ROM and the phone booted normally into the ROM I thought I had just wiped.
factory wipe (data/cache) in CWM only removes the apps, user data, and cache
it leaves /data/media alone (this is the /sdcard/ partition)
so if you hit reboot after a factory reset, it will still keep the same rom as /system is untouched unless you remove it or the rom installer script for the new rom deletes the partition.
When you wipe you clean the ROM for a new one to come. and as far as I know there's no storage to be cleaned up. When yo wipe cache and data it should be good to go.

if you factory wipe using CWM, it will keep the data/media folder, which is all your sdcard contents. other than that the rest of the data folder (apps/settings) will get wiped.
if you wipe userdata using fastboot, either by typing in 'fastboot erase userdata' or when using the -w command when installing factory images then your sdcard will get formatted too.
Anytime you want to change Rom's just move the important files/pics/etc to a subfolder of /data/media or just copy them to your PC first. I think its good to factory reset every once in a while to clear out the remnants of uninstalled programs. Seems to speed up the phone too in my opinion.
Mounts & Storage → Format System "Not SD"
It will help with issues people mostly run into.

Updating aokp for example, the aokp updater told me about the update but is it the same process as installing for the first time? Will I lose my apps and everything or does it only wipe cache? What step in roms delete everything, format data or factory reset or both?
Cheers.
No wipe needed if updating.I recommend wiping cache and dalvik-cache for good measure tho. And you have to reinstall gapps after the rom as well.
When a wipe is needed you want to select factory reset. Never select wipe/format data as it'll wipe the internal storage too.
Then what about...
If you are already on AOKP and doing an update:
1. Make a nandroid (backup in CWM)
2. Format /system
3. Wipe cache
4. Wipe dalvik
5. Install new ROM zip
6. Install gapps
If you end up with issue or coming from another ROM, do this:
1. Wipe data/factory reset
2. Format /system
3. Wipe cache
4. Wipe dalvik
5. Install new ROM zip
6. Install gapps

Isn't a Format/system wiping the apps? Or does that not affect the apps? By format on my recovery it says formatting the sd card deletes everything (on TWRP).
Cheers.
When flashing a new rom I know you want to clear cache, dalvik, factory reset..
is it recommended to wipe system as well or no?
Some roms will wipe system inside the script itself, but you don't know that without actually taking a look inside...I always wipe everything and then flash.
/data (factory reset)
/system
/cache
Dalvik is part of /data, so it will get wiped too.

thank you sir
I want to install a 4.3 ROM over my 4.2.2 ROM, in the instructions it wants me to do the following:
1. Wipe Data/Factory Reset + Wipe Cache partition. (I have done this before).
2. Mount System + Storage
Format System
Format Data
Format Cache.
(Haven't done this before)
3. Wipe Dalvik Cache (I have done this before)
So my question is what does step 2 do. I am scared it will wipe all my data like pictures audio files etc. that I want to keep.

its alright to format /system, /data & /cache as long as you don't format the /sdcard, i always format /system /data even when i'm just updating the rom .. ^^
Just use factory reset in your custom recovery. It handles data and cache. You don't need to manually wipe system and you don't have to touch dalvik
