The other day, I used NRT v1.5.3 to successfully make a Nandroid backup. Today I tried multiple times without success. In each case the phone would hang at the TWRP screen. NRT itself said the process completed. NRT did create a folder on the PC, but it was empty. Any ideas on what the problem might be? BTW, I did run the full driver test multiple times and it always passed.
Pete
Update: I seem to have solved the problem. I wracked my brain to think of what had changed between the successful Nandroid backup and the unsuccessful one. I finally recalled that I had uploaded about 8 GB of pics, videos, and music to the phone. I deleted all of those and was then able to do the Nandroid backup successfully. I conclude that NRT and/or Nandroid has a maximum size restriction. Can anyone comment?

While trying to restore the last several nandroid backups on my EVO I get the error
Error: run ' nandroid-mobile.sh restore ' via adb!
using RA recovery
I didnt get any errors doing the backup...and I never had this problem in the past...as far as I know I am not doing anything different making backups than I have in the past.
Edit:
Im able to restore without errors from clockwork mod...and its a backup I made right after I made the AR backup....
Found out the answer...my sd card is full! LOL! Its been one of those days!
Any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
WhiteEvo
i get this error most of the time with ra as well, but my memory card is nowhere near full (6gb or so left.) the other day i backed up my cm6.1, flashed warm rls3, forgot something so backed up rls3 and restored cm fine, but then i couldnt restore the rls3 backup i made. i wiped everything and still couldnt restore, and then couldnt restore the cm backup i had just restored 15 minutes earlier. ive been getting this error almost any time i try and restore a backup for a few months now, any ideas?
I've seen a low battery cause this error. If you run via adb, as suggested, you'll see the error displayed.
hi, i need help restoring my backup in cwm 3.0.2.8.
The system partition restores fine but none of my apps or anything get restored. I've tried different versions of cwm and none of them have worked. I know i can just restore my apps with my backup or titanium but i shouldnt have to and i forgot to before i made the backup.
It doesnt even restore any if my contacts, texts, etc. It seems like its just restoring the rom with what ever mods and tweaks i had applied. This has happened with multiple roms so i reckon its a fault with cwm. Also when restoring just the data in cwm it doesnt say "Restore complete!"
Anybody got any suggestions?
Anybody got any suggestions?
How are you restoring your ROMs?
Your contacts should be backed up with your Google account.
They are backed up but cwm should restore everything. After i restore it asks me to login to my google account, select my time-zone, etc.
Im restoring from recovery.
It seems like cwm is crashing while restoring my data partition because the screen goes black whilst still showing the rom manager icon and it goes back to the inital screen of recovery like i just booted into it.
Have you checked your SDcard for errors?
There are hundreds of people who use ClockworkMod Recovery without issue. (excusing 3.0.2.5)
Could be something as simple as a couple of bad sectors on your card.
I recently formatted it before i made the backup, how would i check for any more errors?
Try HERE. Its in Russian. So you'd need to visit via Google or use Chrome.
I downloaded but i dont have a clue how to use it
Read through the manual.
Or you could follow this guide HERE, I'm pretty certain that the first tool would be more accurate.
I tried the russian one but i got access denied so im doing the windows method. If none of this works, is there a way to manually extract the files from the .img file? I mainly want the data from my apps because i hav around 300
How are you connecting your SDcard to your computer? I just ran a test using ,
Code:
flashnul G: -T
It worked fine, that was connected via USB cable with the card mounted as a drive.
No problems which I'm pretty pleased with, now just to transfer my data back.
I forgot to run CMD as admin, its running now
EDIT: I didnt get any errors
If the SDcard is fine. Then I'd reflash CWM Recovery.
I have. The only reason I flashed .2.8 was because of this problem. I have to send my phone to HTC on monday for repair so when I get I back (20 days later) Il start again from fresh. For now I'm gonna unroot and s-on etc etc... I hate sense.
Thanks a million for your help though!
Question: If HTC swap my phone with another, will my backup still work with the new one?
Off topic, I point blank refused to wait 21 days + for a repair. After some wrangling got an exchange. Sadly the exchange handset had severe case misalignment issues. Refused that also.
Yes your backup will still work. It doesn't matter what handset you use. The backup isn't tied to it.
Haha the speaker for calls doesn't work anymore so i hav to send it back. 20 days is gnna seem like forever lol. I'm gnna hav to look for my Nokia 3310. It's like 10 years old and its never failed me once.
As for my back up, when I do get my phone back i need to go through my apps and delete what I don't want.....or I could buy a bigger mem card and setup A2SD. Is there no way to browse inside the data.img file from the backup?
I recently wanted to try a different ROM, so I backed up all my apps with Titanium Backup and then did a Nandroid with Amon Ra. After playing with the new ROM for a few hours, I decided I didn't like it and wanted to return to my previous setup. I tried restoring from the Nandroid 3 times, but I kept getting sent into a bootloop. So I cut my loss and just flashed the same ROM again and figured I'd just restore my apps and set everything up again (I've done this so many times, it doesn't even take me that long anymore). However, after setting everything back up again and restoring my apps, I realized that several of my apps hadn't backed up for some reason and I was restoring from versions several months old (some of these were games that I'd made considerable progress in).
Is there any way of extracting apps from a Nandroid and replacing my current version with them (assuming the Nandroid isn't corrupt and the app files are valid - not sure this is a reasonable assumption, since the phone wouldn't restore to this backup, but I figure it's worth a try...).
Thanks in advance!
Dave
Anybody?
I just tried following this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=890508, but it didn't have very good instructions once the files were extracted. I didn't find any of my apps in the /app folder, instead the only files I found were in the data.img file and then in the data folder. I tried copying the folder I found onto my phone, but the app crashed as long as I used this replaced folder.
Any suggestions?
Hello everyone!
Yesterday, I tried to upgrade to a Kit Kat rom. I used the Galaxy nexus toolkit, and did a full backup... plus an EFS backup. Afterwards, I did the full format/wipe from CWM recovery, and installed the ROM.
Well, apparently one of the options wipes your EFS file folder; I have no way of connecting to my network. My IMEI is the stock number, and I've spent hours scouring the internet trying to find a way to restore it. The majority of the responses are "try a factory reset and restore" or "too bad so sad, should've backed up". Well, I did try several options. The first being the EFS restore. Apparently, the backup is stored on the phone and wasn't sent to my computer, like the rest of the normal backups. That option is now out. Oh, how I miss SD storage.
The second was a full restore to stock, again, nothing. Third, I had an old nandroid backup. After doing these I saw that the EFS tree is left untouched, as it is so delicate. The only way to do this is give up and send it in for servicing, or to do a phone NV Backup swap with QPST.
I need to get access to the service menu (or any way to change the USB/Modem) as listed here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1946915
Unfortunately, *#7284# does nothing on an i9250, nor does anything besides *#*#4636#*#*... which isn't what I need. The terminal command doesn't appear to work, either.
I don't understand very well but, have you tried to restore your EFS backup from recovery? Did you make the backup from recovery or from toolkit?

I have done a recovery from the toolkit (as the files are stored on the computer and not the phone) which is where I made the backup from, as well.
However, the EFS partition is apparently never included in this backup, as it is supposed to be immune to changes and formatting. I proved them wrong.
Well I did that same blunder last month with my nexus and then I tried all remedies plus own experiments but couldn't get results. All I heard is that to send phone to service centre. If you find any other solution so do mention here, I gave up after so many tries

@what9000 you may want to check out this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2508320
Specifically post #6 AND #9
I have personally never used the nexus backup tool, but if it does does backup the /radio folder, you may be in luck.
Well, it has been repaired. Thank you all for your help, in the end I managed to pull some things together in a mash up of fixes.
It appears that upon a new restore from a nandroid backup, I was still getting no signal. However, I did a *#06#, and my IMEI was intact. I read that the Radio folder gets backed up, but not the factory folder. Upon a new install, I imagine the radio folder is wiped, which is why every install from then on had a bunk imei (it had nothing to pull from as my factory folder is toast)
However, it looks like the efs backup I had *did* save the folder structure... I found the efs.tar backup in my galaxy nexus toolkit folder. It had the folder zip, but couldn't restore it due to permissions... didn't feel like messing with that at the moment. I copied them in with root explorer, grabbed the nv_data files from the /radio/ folder, deleted the files from /radio, and restarted. Lo and behold, they were restored from the factory folder with the correct IMEI.
I just put a fresh copy of kit kat 4.4.2 on and have cell service again. Oh happy day, I don't have to use my old HTC Sensation! :highfive:
This also marks the first time a backup actually saved my skin. Usually I vaporize the backup accidentally before it has an opportunity to prove itself useful.
Team,
I just recently bought a Google Pixel and was attempting to transfer my contacts and messages and stuff from my HTC One M8 to my Google Pixel. However, my HTC One M8 was still on KitKat (4.4.2) and would not work with the transfer tool. So then I said let me take a TWRP backup of my phone before i start attempting to update it.
I attempted to download a rom to flash via TWRP but it did not work so I naturally tried to restore back to the TWRP backup I took.
Except now everytime I try to restore the backup I took all I get is extractTarFork() process ended with ERROR: 255
I have attempted to google all day with no luck.
Anyone dealt with this and have resolved it?
Thanks!

Did you try updating TWRP? I had something like this happen a few years ago with my S3 and updating my recovery fixed it.

yep, I had updated to twrp 3.0.2.0...still no luck
there has to be a way to fix this
so now even more weird. I downloaded Titanium Backup to try and extract from my TWRP backup, and nothing is there!
how the f is that possible!? does this mean my data is forever gone?
NoCall log, you should backup your calls with CALL LOG BACKUP & RESTORE apk from play store.Messages, you should backup with SMS BACKUP AND RESTORE apk from market(witch also can make a backup of all your sms/mms & call log!!!),so it's an one app for all. Both app make folders on your internal/sd memory that contain files selected by name and date, and you can just transfer this folders from M8 to Pixel and download those apps from playstore on your new Pixel phone, and restore calls/sms..About Titanium restore, isn't M8 ARM phone and Pixel is ARM64(or x86,I'm not sure)?so you can't restore those apps in TB cuz they're different versions with diferent screen DPI,and I suppose they won't work or TB gives you error cuz of that. You can only restore data from TB ,and it's very probable that some of those "restore' s" will give you problem due thing I sad in upper text and also cuz of big difference in Android versions(4.4>7.0+).
I hope you understand what I try to say,English is not my language, and I'm just trying to help you.I didn't by Pixel yet,I plan to,and this is what I would use in mind doing those transfers and restore procedure.
I had LGG4(ARM64),I transfered all my TB folder from M8(ARM),and when restoring ARM>ARM64 ,many of them force closed or mail function. But ONLY data restore allways worked on already installed app.
And about your error and problems on m8 with TWRP,yes try with some other and maybe older versions of TWRP(if m8 is on 4.4.4 ,then maybe latest recoveryes have problem to do backup and restore. In the end,try to flash stock RUU for your version on it,then TWRP+superuser,to try to fix all.BUT BEFORE Ruu Move all your TB and other data from internal memory/sd to computer or some other external drive-in case you lost or overwrite your data on phone.
Maybe someone will point you in right direction, maybe someone already had that problem.

I took the full backup of my M8 using some version like TWRP v2.8.0.? I tried to restore the backup and it kept throwing me that error. So I said, lets try to flash the latest version of TWRP and that is what I did. I attempted restoring through the latest TWRP but still I get the same error. I have also tried to extract the backup using Cygwin with no luck. Titanium Backup also does not see it as a valid backup.
I am still on Android 4.4.2 (I had a backup from 2014 I was able to restore to in the meantime and is rooted).
The only place the data from my M8 is, is in the TWRP backup file which refuses to restore. All data on the phone was formatted and overwritten as I tried to flash a newer rom on it with no success. I have not tried to restore the data to my pixel and will not do so. All I need to do is restore the M8 backup to the M8 and try the methods you listed but I cannot get past this TWRP error. Or, get the backup to extract properly without throwing errors so that I can get the appropriate .db files from within
I am sure there is a fix involved with TWRP or is my wishful thinking sore out of luck?
I had this problem and it took me two days to resolve it. I had a good backup and I know it was good because I had used it several times and it worked. But then after doing some system installs I got the error 255. I tried several things to fix it and nothing worked and I really did not want to lose my backup. What did work for me was to use TWRP wipe function to FORMAT the phone. Wiping or factory reset did not work. I lost the contents of my internal SD card but I was able to transfer most to my external SD card. You could also connect the phone with a cable to a computer and use the pull command in ADB to backup the contents f the internal SD card. Given the choice between losing the SD card and the data files I come to lose some of the SD card. Anyway, a FORMAT worked when nothing else did. I read that this error is caused by a lack of space. When I checked the log it seemed that the restore was failing with a particular file which misled me to thinking I had to remove the corrupt file, but since after the format I was able to restore without any problem, it would seem that there was no corrupt data. Hope this helps someone.
