So, I flashed the sammy kernel from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1871946 and in the OP it says custom boot animation support. i put the bootanimation.zip file in system/media but i still have the stock animation.
any help would be appreciated.

The GS3 doesn't support the traditional .zip bootanimations. It's a specific file type called .qmg. You can Google .qmg, and look into a way to try to re-package, but you won't be able to use any of the traditional ways of changing bootanimations, and I have not yet found anything in here supporting changing the .qmg animations.

Ive searched the forums for, how to's on boot animation but there are loads of threads regarding already made boot animations and i couldn't find a tutorial.
Hi all helpfull i want to contruibute by making some, hopfully, awsome bootanimations for the sgs2 international version. some quick questions
i have found this tutorial (http://www.addictivetips.com/mobile/how-to-change-customize-create-android-boot-animation-guide) but i cant seem to find the mentioned bootanimation zip in /system/media
Q0: is this above mentioned guide still up to date and can i use it to learn me hw to make a boot animation for my sgs2.
Q1: wich app can i use to find it? Astro file manager or do i NEED the payed app root explorer.
Q2: i also had cm 7.1 rom on my sgs2 where i found a custumbootanimation zip in a backup folder. when i tried extrating that on my windows based laptop with winzip and also with 7-zip i could not extract it. i got a message saying it wasnt a archive.WHAT am I doing wrong?
Q3: if i finnally get a working boot animation will it work on other devices such as samsung nexus or even more important will it work on future ics ROM?
what i am working on : http://www.4shared.com/folder/R5t_VY7P/_online.html
Q0, it will work
Q1, just get root explorer already
Q2, no idea I have no problems opening the bootanimation files I come across, possibly this particular file is corrupted?
Q3, its all about the screen resolution, if you have a bootanimation it has a specific resolution, the phone you wanna load it on will require that resolution or greater. If greater then it just won't fill the screen.
you need to find a rom which supports a modded bootup animation..
otherwise there will only be a bootanimation.qmg..
you cannot edit that as it is somekind of proprietary video format..
You probably wont be able on stock ROMS.. unless stated in forum

I managed to make a really nice boot up animation incorporating SSF4 with the the fei long character. ( i know i should ask for permission first at capcom side so i cant upload it as of yet, but the animated version looks sweet.)
Q:thing is my pgn images are to large in file size. I took the custom rom CM 7.1 boot animation as a compare my work. those png have a file size of not even 2KB mine are roughly 80KB. i think i should be able to convert it with IrfranView to make it go from 24-bit to 8-bit , and hopefully lose loads of file size. But i can seem to get it to work. So what is the max size for .PNG images used for startup animations.
Thank you in advance

Update: inserted manually on the directory, it works fine!...but probably it's the 3.0 version, and i looking for 2.1.
Update2: Fixed it!!
- Renamed all images from .png to .jpeg,
- Used the code content in the "desc.txt" of the bootanimation you linked
- Compressed all folders as a .zip. (in method of compression setted "store", or "memorizzazione" for those who have Italian version of win rar)
- Moved manually to the directory "system/media" using ES File Explorer
and wooooow
Thanks a lot levone for your support and pacience

No prob. I didn't really look - what's the difference in versions?
change some parts of animations
Update3: after cm 12.1 nightly update, the bootanimation doesn't work, except the version you linked. It still working fine... s*it!!!
Many of you know that to get ZIP animations working on our phone (SM-G360T1) that we have to go through hell. So instead of going through the hell, I've simply followed a guide and managed to port Eden of the East boot animation to 480x800. Remember this requires root guys!
[INSTRUCTIONS]
1. Download bootanimation.zip and extract files.
2. Move downloaded files to /system/media and overwrite existing files
3. Change permissions to RW ~ R ~ R
And that's it! Congratulations you now have the boot animation.
[ADDITIONAL INFORMATION]
I'd like to thank @bogarty for his awesome guide to make QMG boot animations. I'd also like to let people know at request at may or may not port your boot animation to samsung QMG. Even if it's the wrong screen resolution I can port it.
thanks for sharing this dud but a screenshort would be better if u share it
I want to make a bootanimation but i dont know how to do, does somebody have a howto to make a bootanimation?

I am happy to hear of people wanting to learn hints for themselves so I am happy to pass on the knowledge.
First you must be aware of what kind of bootanimation style we have for stock Samsung, which is qmg style.
Now the thing with qmg is that the images inside the file aren't easily viewable or editable.
So the first thing I do is convert my system to read both zip and qmg files. I have created a mod that will look for a zip and use that and if the zip isn't there the system will revert to using a qmg style bootanimation.
There are tutorials for making qmg style Animations around, but personally I find that method a little more difficult as well as it limits the amount of frames you can use.
So personally I always make zip style Animations
There are probably some guides around for making zip styles as well, but I put together a quick and easy guide here
Once you finish making you zip style animation, you will need to use my mod to allow your system for zip bootanimations.
Here is the link, just be aware that there is a version for Lollipop and MM. Select appropriate version for you
Good luck
Thank you verry much for the howto . I wil go mess around with it??
Hi.
I would like to know if there's a way to have custom boot animations on android 12 already.
Are there some to download?
I tried old oos11 zips but they won't "play"
//EDIT:
So, I made a magisk zip which flashes bootanimation.zip to /system/product/media but still it doesn't play.
Maybe bootanimation.zip format is different in oos12
//EDIT:
ok... Hmmm...
Original Bootanimation files are under /my_product/media/bootanimation but I can't write there with solid explorer. Also I assume I can't make a magisk zip that writes there...
Boot animations, fonts, emojis, etc. are part of the theme in A12 and apparently cannot be changed by overwriting files like in previous versions. There is a Theme Store app for OnePlus now that has a few fonts, but there's not much else in it. Hopefully they'll expand it going forward and include boot animations like Xiaomi's theme store does, but of course that method will be limited to what's available in the Theme Store.
As far as I know, no one has found another way yet, but if you find anything that works let us know. I'm beyond bored with the limited/non-existent modding in OOS12 myself.

That's really sad. These fonts in the theme store are just bad. Guess we need a bit more digging and hopefully one finds a way to mod at least fonts and bootanimations.
When it comes to fonts, I made a bit progress, it is possible with a magisk zip to change some fonts.
//EDIT:
Here the original bootanimation.zip from /my_product/media/bootanimation/
anyone has a clue on how to make /my_product/.. writeable ?
@toolhas4degrees is there any way you could help out here? I know you have a thread on here of your bootanimations.

No it's their theme engine. Someone will have to download a theme extract it find what is controlled and located for fonts and boot animations in the theme. Then break it apart and build a new theme to apply this. I'm still on a11.but you could try doing what I just said. Reminds me of crappy Samsung days

I tried but I'm not a magisk or coding dev my attempts failed trying to mount that partition in a magisk zip but in not a magisk zip god. It would probably be easier to download a theme. Extract it and edit it.
What's the point really?
I keep my phone is always on so I don't see them really at all.
Boot animations and such are just for kids anyways.

It's personal preference in customisation of your phone and how you like it. Has nothing to do with your age. Maybe when I'm 70 I won't want to toy with my tech
