[Q] Can I get updates directly from Google? - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Galaxy Nexus (Sprint) unlocked and rooted to use SuperUser.
Running JB 4.1.1 Baseband ver: L700.05 V.FH05 / L700.FH05, Kernel ver 3.0.31-00006-gea59422 Build JRO03U.L700FH06
When I bought my Nexus from Sprint I thought I would be getting timely updates from Google, or Samsung. With the recent update to JB, I learned I was wrong.
Can I flash a Google version to my Sprint Galaxy Nexus, so that the updates will not have to filter through Sprint and then come from them? If I do this, (if it is the way it works) does it void my agreement with Sprint? I pay them for two levels of insurance; if I were to need to repair/return to them, would I have to unroot and re-flash to Sprint Stock?
I am not, at this time, particularly interested in flashing a ROM from a developer. I think I want to feel like I have mastered the stock version first.

With the Sprint model, there is no other choice for official updates than to stay with your stock firmware and wait for Sprint to update it. Google does not provide a stock image that magically puts you on a different update pathway. You're using a carrier branded device with CDMA and LTE that Google doesn't have the rights to distribute. Sprint holds those keys.
If you want updates timely and directly from Google you need to buy an unlocked GSM Nexus.

Thanks, I seem to learn lots of things after the window of opportunity is past. So when this contract is done, do a bit more research before buying.

I've purchased two from amazon. One was a yakju, the other was not. It seems to be a crapshoot to me?
It doesn't really matter where you buy it from. You can convert any non-yakju build to yakju. It's a matter of luck when it comes to buying a GSM Galaxy Nexus, you're not guaranteed a "yakju." Very simple to switch.
You can view this thread, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1387777&highlight=yakju -- use search next time :/

Same thing. Just flash it afterwards on the google android site.
I know you can flash it to yakju just wanted to avoid it if possible
Next phone: GNex GSM
Current phone: Nexus One CM7/Sidekick 4G stock

Why avoid? Warranty purposes? Backups of other builds are available (look around) If you flash custom ROMs, yakju/yakjuxw won't even matter.
Like I said again, it's really based off luck. Some people have gotten yakju from Negri, Expansys. Some people have received other builds of yakju from them. It's completely random. It's not like you can go walk into a store in America (not many places I imagine sell this with a few exceptions) and check the build before leaving the store.
You can buy from www.clove.co.uk . thats were i picked up 2 G Nexus . both were yakju build and i picked them up on different dates.

Help! GS3 T999V Wind Mobile ICS 100% STOCK
Im really upset, seeing samsung put out so many OTA updates/fixes for all USA carriers even most canadian carriers eccept wind mobile. Samsung has never released the OTA update for wind mobile fix that gives the screen brightness controll in in the pull down notification screen. And never once received any updates for bug fixes. When i have saw t-mobile ect put out 4-6 different ota uptates for bugs ect. Im really upset on samsungs neglect to certin mobile carriers/customers. Can someone give me some help on this? Because i want a direct answer from samsung. Is there anyone that works for xda that can contact samsung directly to get this answer? Im sure all other GS3 Owners would be pretty upset if this happend to you. Seeing all gs3 owners getting updates/fixes and us at wind have never even received the update/fix that gives you the screen brightness control in the pull down notification screen and no bug fixes at all. Im sick of dealing with all these bugs and samsung hasn't done a thing for us at wind mobile. Please help me! What would you do?
Calm down. I highly doubt its Samsung holding out on you. Much more likely its Wind.
First, do some reading. T-mobile has only released ONE update. Everything else are leaked builds.
Second, Samsung doesn't decide when to release the update, your carrier does. Each carrier customizes it to their liking. Wind may simply just not be ready with theirs. Who knows.
I pretty much answered the same question yesterday. Its not anyones fault that Wind hasn't updated except Wind. We have confirmation that at least Videotron is a lready working on a JB release, and we pretty much know that Sammy has finished their part on the LH2 build. Maybe Wind has no intention of updating.
There are PLENTY of ways you can get what you want. Just root the phone and go to the development section.

Thanx for taking your time to help me. I checked and wind still hasent put out the update that videotron & mobilicity just put out. Now im really doubting that wind will put out anything. Ok i only want stock official roms/updates. If i unlocked my phone what would happen with updates? Would i get the unbranded updates? that samsung pushes out to wind/mobileicity/videotron before the carriers brand/customize them? And could i still get ota updates if i unlock my phone or would i only beable the update with kies? I dont think i would need to root my phone to do this would i? Or just unlocking my phone will make this work for getting samsung official updates/roms?? I want to get this figered out because jelly bean was released today in europe so it wont be long before samsung makes it avialible to us. Also if i did unlock my phone would it work the same way for updating to stock official jelly bean i would beable to get the unbranded jelly bean update?
Thanx .

[Q] Worth waiting for Nexus edition or just get carrier version

Howdy all,
First off, let me apologize if this has been brought up before, I've been diligently researching the past couple of days and couldn't find anyone that asked a similar question, so I'm asking now.
Anyways I'm looking for a new phone and I'm pretty sure I'm gonna go with some variant of the s4. The question now, with the release of the nexus edition being so close, I can't decide which one to go for.
I do want something as close to stock as possible, hence my interest in the nexus edition.
Normally, it'd be no question, I'd just wait it out, however I was looking on Tmobile's site last night and it seems there might have been a price drop in the full retail price? It's saying it's now 579.
It wouldn't be a huge deal if I had to flash a new rom, but at the same time, it would be kind of nice if I didn't have to worry about functionality and compatibility issues, etc...
I basically want something that doesn't have TouchWiz
Just having a little trouble deciding and would appreciate opinions.
On a somewhat related note too, is the Tmobile's online price usually the same in the store?
Thanks everyone!
It will very the same either way. If you get the normal version or the GE version. Flashing an AOSP roms will pretty much be the same. The extra sensors will not work a day and all Samsung features will be gone. Nothing really special about the GE version. It is even rumored Samsung will still control the updates. If you can wait I would hold out for the next nexus due out soon.

Well I can tell you the T Mobile $579 price is available online and in stores. But I think it only lasts until July 13th.
And it's like an $80 difference between the T Mobile sale price and the Google price. Add in shipping and it's easily a $100 difference.
Yes the Nexus version will be pure AOSP and everything will work right. But you could put any of the CM or AOKP varient ROMs on the T Mobile version right now and have 99% funcationality with only an occassional hiccup here and there. They are pretty solid builds even for being early builds. And you can easily make any of those look and act like pure AOSP, with still having some of the functionality of CM under the hood if you need it.
On top of that I'd bet the Nexus version isn't out for a full day before the pure AOSP Sock rom that comes on it is available for download and flashing on your T Mobile version.
So my opinion, if you can root and mod a phone, save the $100 and buy now. Turn it into a put AOSP later.
The biggest disadvantage is that no one will push OTA updates to you. You'll have to download them and install them yourself.
Like the guy above said theres no difference between them you can flash the nexus edition roms to the carrier editions plus if you buy it now on tmobile you get it for a lot cheaper than google :good:
hmmmm all good points...
Given that I capped out of my highspeed data for this month anyways, I think I might as well wait it out just to see what happens after wed.
Thanks for the thoughts everyone, still welcoming any other opinions as well!
I echo the thoughts. With the T-Mobile version having an unlocked bootloader, all AT&T/T-Mobile bands available, and the fact that when using the proper procedures, one can flash any S4 variant's ROMs, I see no reason why NOT to save $100 or so now. Go ahead and get your S4, use CM or other AOSP type ROMs for now, then switch to pure AOSP once it's available. I don't think it will take much more than a day (if that long) after release for 100% pure AOSP to be available in some way, shape, or form for the S4.

I have the same issues, buy T-mo or GE S4. Great thread so far!
I did not realize, however, that Tmo S4 was unlocked bootloader. I thought that one of the GE advantages was unlocked bootloader + root. So I thought IF you got a TMO, you had to unlock root it yourself, and with GE, you didn't.
Can someone confirm again for me that tmo S4 is unlocked?
Anyone know if the ATT one is unlocked?
Can the ATT S4 run on tmo with NO issues, or does it need a radio flash?
An advantage that I see is that the Tmo S4 with touchwiz DOES have benefits, I've heard that TW enables some sensors that GE will NOT, so that pure stock no TW GE S4 won't use all the hardware.
Can anyone elaborate on exactly WHAT sensors stock google will NOT have that TW version will?
Thanks for the help!

All of the special sensors will be disabled. No IR sensors and none of the TW features will work. No it doesn't come pre-rooted. You still have to manually root it. Only the ATT version has a locked boot loader. All the rest are up locked.

T-Mobile S4 does not have a locked bootloader. It IS SIM-locked, which I believe is what you're thinking here; but that's easily fixed. Also, the M1919 is so easy to root, it really shouldn't really even enter into the consideration of whether the GE is pre-rooted or not. AT&T, Verizon, etc are the ones which have the locked bootloader and are also obviously SIM-locked as well. I swear I read somewhere that the GE S4 is going to be pretty much the M1919 but with officially supported AOSP instead of TouchWiz. Don't quote me on that, I can't find the source nor am I really looking for it, I just believe I read that somewhere...
Any S4 (minus the i9500) can run any S4's (minus the i9500 again) custom CWM/TWRP flashable ROMs without flashing radios. I'm using a T-Mobile device on Net10 prepaid (but started out using it on AT&T's network) and all I did was SIM-unlock and change the APN and I had 4G LTE on AT&T's network straight out of the box. The AT&T S4 works *better* on T-Mobile networks with the AWS band enabled, which is a modified AT&T radio; but it will still pick up most of T-Mobile's network.
As for which features/sensors AOSP won't have that TW will: all TW-specific features. The IR blaster, for one; but if it's specific to TW, don't expect the GE to have in AOSP. I don't want to make an assumption here, but I would venture to say that the sensors won't actually be disabled, they just can't be made use of in AOSP. I would think that flashing TW on the GE would more than likely enable the use of all the sensors while in TW, seeing as the closed-source drivers for those sensors would then be present... not saying that will be the case, but I don't see why it wouldn't work unless those sensors were physically removed from the device for the GE.

Gagh!!!! Decided to just get the TMobile one, so I went today.
Just a FYI if you already have a TMobile account, went to two different stores today, neither would sell me a phone at the 579 price w/out moving to a more expensive plan for a month first.

Oh. Yeah the 579 clearly only applies with the sign up or continuation of a qualifying plan.
The prepaid plans are not qualifying. So the rule is not that you have to get a more expensive plan to get the deal, but the qualifying plans are all more expensive than your current one.

Drat! heh. I normally wouldn't mind swapping plans but given the price and the fact I mostly use data, and very rarely use it as a phone, I'm kinda kneen on keeping my plan.
They said they could swap me back to my current plan after the month is up but I'm a bit wary of that idea since it was kinda troublesome to get it in the first place.

Can anyone confirm for certain that the tmo version will be able to use the Nexus edition roms immediately? I don't see where there would be a problem, just want to confirm.
I would love to buy a sgs4 but I would also like to use the latest Android right away. Currently on my nexus devices, I can flash something the day it comes out. Likely that will be the same for the sgs4 Google edition, which makes sense it would translate over to the tmo version as well. So in theory, you could flash within a day or so of the sgs4 version coming out. Thoughts?
Also, has anyone confirmed they will release the source as well?
It sounds like best case scenario, I could run my sgs4 either touchwiz or aosp bug free. With prompt Google releases
Why would anyone buy the Google edition one then? Clearly you can get it cheaper elsewhere with the same functionality

Lollipop Update

Okay this is kind of weird because I know T-Mobile has not rolled out the update. In fact I believe they are completely refusing to do it to force people to resort to upgrading phones. But I got this system update on my phone this morning and I am wondering if anybody has gotten it as well or has any explanation. I haven't downloaded it yet.
T-Mobile SGH-M919. Weird because it says the GPE
it has been said before if you would have searched, but it is a patch for the stagefright vulnerability and that is about it.

Which rom where you using when you get this message?
GPE has already been updated to 5.1, so even if that is LP it's still older than current.
I have been calling TMOBILE (US) every week since May to find out where the LOLLIPOP UPGRADE is for my SGH-M919 ((Galaxy S4) and finally about 3 weeks ago I got them to confess that SAMSUNG HAD GIVEN THEM TO UPDATE FOR THIS PHONE - BUT, THEY WERE NOT GOING TO RELEASE IT.
When I asked why, I was given the B***S*** answer that there were known bugs and all other providers had problems with it - I said they were corrected in the 5.01, and 5.1 versions - he then basically (without saying it) stated they want people to buy newer devices.
I told him I OWN MY DEVICE, THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH IT, and I WILL ROOT IT AND PUT A CUSTOM ROM ON IT.
I was told, you will void your warranty.....I rolled with laughter and said...it is over 2 years old - THERE IS NO F***ING WARRANTY anymore...and I hung up.
*BH*
Yet another great example of why I jumped ship for Cricket. Tmo does all this uncarrier crap because they say they care about the consumer, but when it's all on the table they're just like Verizon or Sprint or AT&T. If you're on older hardware, then they don't care about you. You're a number that they added years ago, and all that matters are the numbers they'll add today and tomorrow.
I'm still rockin' my S4 after all this time. When I'm ready to upgrade, I'll be buying my phone unlocked and ready to go with Cricket. Now that the new Nexus devices are on their way, I'm just going to save up and splurge on the Nexus 6P and not have to worry about bull**** carriers screwing me on updates and security fixes.
I buy T-Mo phones because they traditionally have unlocked bootloaders, so I can flash whatever ROM I like. ATT, and I believe Cricket, tends to use phones where the bootloader is locked down tightly. I like the open Nexus platform and am also considering one in the future...

Solutions to get ATT Updates on other carriers

Wondering what solutions people have used to get ATT updates while using other MVNO's (I'm on Crickett and still have not gotten the security update - wonder if it hasn't rolled out to me yet, or if I need to do something creative).
I have an old ATT Sim card, but it is not provisioned, so it didn't help.
Would buying a ATT GO phone sim work? Would that only work once, or could that one SIM card work perpetually (i.e. another update 6 months from now)? I have two Note 4's, could one sim work for both Note 4's?
I also hear Best Buy could help, but I want to find a solution I can do in my own home..
Thanks!!!!
just go to best buy and get the phone updated thru samsung rep
You could try Samsung's Kies program.

They won't flash just the update, but instead the latest entire firmware with updates mixed in.
In other words, when you get these OTA updates that aren't an entirely new OS (like going from Kitkat to Lollipop), they're just patching the update into your existing firmware, which also results in the firmware version changing. However, Best Buy will flash the complete firmware with the patches already included. They can't just give you the patch. Odin will do the same exact thing as Best Buy too.
Also, you'll need to wait about 2 weeks after an update before going to Best Buy. They told me that only some Best Buys in highly populated cities will get the update files immediately. It can take a week or two for your neighborhood Best Buy to receive the needed update files.
