Normal for S3 to get warm on bottom of screen and back of phone? - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

This is my 2nd S3. First ones home button stuck down and wouldn't come back up. That phone never got warm at all. I was wondering if this is a normal occurance on the S3. My phone now gets rather warm while surfing the net and checking email for about 10 minutes at a time. brightness is at auto (as was the first one) and all settings are as the first one was. Just wondering if I should do a warranty swap since I am now over my 30 day return mark.
Thank you all
AJ

Mine does the same thing. Most phones will get somewhat warm with heavy use, the S3 seems a little more susceptible to it, maybe because of how it's designed.

Mine will get warm as well. I haven't had it get hot except for when I use it for GPS in my car which is understandable considering I turn brightness all the way up with gps/data/wifi and have it charging at the same time.

Yep perdectly said thats the only time mine has gotten overly hot!
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using Tapatalk 2

mine gets warm, never hot. I do notice that on this one it is, as I said, towards the bottom. The first one I had never got warm at all. I'm hoping I won't have to go return this one warranty wise. I love the phone. LOL. When I called ATT to ask them the question they said No it's not normal and to return it, then asked if I have heard about the Iphone 5 coming out LOL.

The chipset is in the bottom area underneath the simcard/sdcard slots.its normal for it to warm up.However if its superhot then no......usually massive heat will damage sone sdcards happens all the time at my store.

I have one day left actually on my 30 day returns policy. Should I utilitze this and get a new one? If so does the white or blue make a difference? I hate returning phones!!!
(Update)
This darn thing just got so hot it shut itself off and all I was doing was texting LOL!
AJ

Mine gets warm when charging or both GPS/DATA are on.
Once, I got a "system is too hot" warning when I left it charging under a pillow.
I think it depends on how much you use it...some days, when I play games or watch Netflix for 20 minutes straight, it gets a little warm.

If it legitimately shut itself off while you were just texting because of how hot it got. Return it now.
That isn't normal at all.

[Q] Temperature

Hi Folks.
Does anyone have any idea what a safe operating temperature for the Samsung Epic Touch 4G is?
I most recently have been using the usb to hdmi converter to play shows to my TV and then running a VNC Server on the phone so I can control the Epic from my laptop to pause, play, etc. while the phone is setting by the TV.
This works great, but with the video and the server running the Epic gets up to 42 to 46 degrees C.
I have felt phones get hotter, but I don't want to damage my phone either. It cooled down to 32 degrees C pretty fast after using it as a media center.
Any opinions or technical knowledge? I ran it for a few hours, and am hoping I did not cause any permanent damage.
I know epic 1 shut down at like 110° f. might be too low, but mime got so hot on halloween after using as projection for our haunted house. Bricked the phone until I factory reset it...played movie fine, just boot lopped.

I think I took the Touch to like 114F. I did not notice the phone misbehaving at all, and it cooled down fast enough. (Well not entirely true. It kinda froze up, but that happens everytime I unhook it from the TV, seems my ADW Launcher gets glitchy when using with TV, don't think related to heat.) I think the reason it really heated up was due to using as vnc server, would not even gain charge. Yesterday when I just streamed the video to the TV without vnc, it stayed charged and seemed cooler.
The phone you used for a projection, was it the Epic or the Epic Touch? And after doing the factory reset, did you notice any issues? Slower, freezing, etc.?
Just Bumping this...
Hoping to get some more incite into the Epic Touch temperature specifications.
Thanks in advance
Bump one more time. Anyone?

Thanks for the reply John.
I would think so too. Just curious as doing the streaming etc to the TV is very convenient but not worth damaging the phone. I really think its ok to do so though, the phone has been at 40-42C with normal use. Running a bit above that has not seemed to harm it.

I think I had a run in with a rogue app the other day. My battery was draining unusually fast and I plugged it in to charge, but it was charging very slowly and the temp got up to 120F according to the widget I'm using. I rebooted and everything has been fine since.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using Tapatalk
Often times (I mean, very often) when I go to grab and use my phone I can tell by touch that it's hot and check the battery temp - those times it's usually 106° F and higher. I could tell you now that seeing my temp at 110° to 115° F doesn't surprise me at all. What kills me is that most of these times I'm not actively doing anything with the phone - I've just pulled it out of my pocket and think, damn, it's hot again.
A couple of weeks ago I updated the Widget Locker app to the latest version to try out the Honeycomb and Ice Cream lock screens, so after updating I played around with it for a while. My phone started getting hot - as in HOTTER than I'm used to. I checked the temp and it was screaming hot at 122°. What's worse is that it kept getting hotter and when I checked my battery monitor app it was definitely Widget Locker that was driving it up there. I powered off, let the battery cool a bit then rebooted. I plugged in the phone to regain some charge and checked it a little while later to see it was really, really hot again. Now at some point it was so hot it would NOT charge - stating this explicitly. I pulled the battery to let it cool and tried again later. This happened about 3-4 times before I said screw it and uninstalled Widget Locker all together. Hasn't done that again since.
So, if it helps you at all, temps around 110° - 115° have been fine for me. Over 120° would start to concern me and I think it stops charging and gives you a warning at 130°.
I've attached some photos of that particular instance. The last photo shows my temp distribution... I'm assuming all the time, and it surprised me at being an avg of 88°.
Thanks Beans! That was very useful information. I feel mich better now. Thats to bad about Widget Locker. I have used that app on occasion. I have not had a problem yet with it getting to hot on its own. But if it does I will assume its a troublesome app. Thanks again!

I've had 2 replacement phones in my 1st month of having a Gnex.
Just then I had a random turn off. Normal or not?? No rooting, no unlocking fully stock 4.0.2. Wtf?? I just thought yay!, everything is going to OK then bang. Not cool. Might be normal but I doubt it...
Thanks guys.

Not sure what's up.
Do we have faulty units?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA App
I guess it depends on how often it is happening.
I've had my phone for two months now and I believe this is the second time it happened.
As long as it doesn't happen too often and not during a ROM flash, I can live with it.
Yeah, that's the problem though isn't it. Random. It could be when your flashing a rom, or in a phone call. That'd be ****.
I dunno, why do these things happen?
Don't Google test things? Its not real stable is it. There should never be any problems if its a full release.

Nah not at all. Its happened twice since in had it. Once when the battery was at like 6% on its first run down of the battery when I got it. Then on it's first charge. It was at about 80% and I was just swiping left and right and I think bringing the notification drawer down (which doesn't work sometimes, I have another thread on that) and it just turned off. I pressed the power button a few times and it finally turned on with a 10% ish battery drop. That's it though, not again yet. May of been a battery conditioning thing.

You realize 104 F is not hot... at all.....
1) Laptops and have had electronic components built to withstand up to 100 CELSIUS for years. I'm sure your phone can handle 40.
2) If you can't talk on the phone because a little warmth is too much for your sensitive skin move the **** to Alaska because 104 is not hot by any stretch of the imagination.
3) My phone has no lag.... at all, so I don't know what you're speaking of. I can play NFS:MW for an hour, switch to Eufloria HD for another, then hit up GTA:VC for an hour with absolutely no problems. I can also scroll through the drawer faster than my S3 could respond, so it is much more responsive. Maybe you got a defective unit or you messed it up somewhere rooting or flashing roms or poking around where you shouldn't have... I mean based just by your grammar you're not that smart of a person, so I'd say user error is MUCH more likely.
4) If by the blur you mean the purple when you're in the settings, well yes. You've got me there. That is a minor bug that needs to be addressed, and will. The phone has been out for like 11 days bro, give them a ****ing minute.
5) No, sir, your Note 2 is not faster. Yes, it has a larger screen and slightly better battery life, but faster? No. Run a CPU and GPU benchmark and try to tell me its faster.
Give them some time to work out the kinks in the programming. This is how electronics work, nothing is ever going to be perfect when its being produced by the millions on a short time frame with 6 different versions for different countries with different hardware and 10000 different carriers trying to poke around and make their own adjustments to the software.
TL;DR: Stop crying, you're embarrassing yourself.

hi you
I hate when people say use benchmark look which is faster... man everyday use is what matter, when I'm playing games and my note 2 runs them smooth and my S4 runs them choppy there is an issue I'm sorry there just is. Now for 104 degrees being not too hot, wow really its beyond hot for a phone to hit, don't give me the whole laptop crap this is a phone that people use to make phone calls and the screen and the back just feels way way too hot. Just use the speakerphone what are we Apple "You're holding it wrong" come on guys give me a break a 670$ phone should not have all of this stuff going on. Then you're telling me oh download an app to fix the screen issues -.- , you guys may think this is over the top i don't think so when you buy something so expensive and it works so iffy, don't get me started on Shealth love it but keep restarting your steps all the time ... might as well call it Srestart ..... oh samsung i love you but you're killing me with this phone. I'm getting a replacement on monday I'll let you guys know how that one is hope its 100X better....
No, 104F is not too hot for a phone to hit while charging and being used. You have heat from the battery while charging and heat from the processor while using, add any case you might have put on there trapping the heat and it is still well withing acceptable parameters. In Florida ambient temperature reaches that through most of the summer.
And if this thread continues to be a flame/troll fest it will be closed.

104° F is actually cool for a phone th that's charging and in a call. If the device is lagging out on you just return it if a reset doesn't fix the issue.

I actually had this same issue on a white 16gb s4. Phone was powered off while charging over night. Upon powering it on the internal thermometer also read 104F. I suspect it was much hotter, given I have hot spots on my laptop case that reach that temp as verified by a thermal camera. This felt much hotter, though I didn't have the tools on hand to verify.

Well I'm in Florida so whenever I'm inside it's like a warming pad against the AC. When I'm outside I don't care because it's not getting any hotter than the air already is. Sound logic.
You do realize I was being sarcastic right? Regardless, that's neither here nor there. You can't make a thread and be like "Damn samsung my phone hits 104 F when I'm charging and talking on the phone!!!!111oneone"
That's not hot. Especially for a phone that's charging while doing anything, or using mobile data in any way, or playing games. When it hit's 60-70 celsius start complaining about overheating problems/return it. When your phone hits 100 degrees Celsius start worrying about the internals frying. Anything less than that stop complaining. It's a ****ing quad core computer that fits in your hand and is slimmer than a BIC lighter. Of course it's going to get warm. If you didn't realize that when you bought it you shouldn't be paying 650 bucks for anything because you're too stupid to have 650 bucks to spend.
For the last time, that's not hot at all. This thread is pointless. I'm done with it.

My Samsung Galaxy S3 exploded last night while I was sleeping

well not mine actually, but check the link. this is the first im hearing of anything like this...discuss
This is my first time posting so cut me some slack! Also not sure if this is the best place to post this.
Last night at about 3:15am EST (about 1 hour after i plugged it in and went to sleep) I was awoken by a loud noise and a weird squeaking sound. (I charge my phone while I'm sleeping on my bed right next to me)
So, I woke up, and saw a ton of smoke coming out of my phone -- it also smelled REALLY bad. Half asleep, I jumped out of bed and turned the light on, only to see that my phone was just beginning to go on fire. I dumped a glass of water I had in the room on it to stop it from burning...then woke up my brother to come help. The smoke smelled so bad and wafted through the entire second floor of my house. I had a foam mattress pillow top that had a hole burned through it too--which we later threw out because it was still burning throughout. Also, some of the plastic on my phone was melting and kind of shooting out of it, and some landed on my pinky finger and burned some skin off (very small burn though).
Does anyone have any suggestions what I should do? Call Verizon? Samsung? Have a lawyer call them? I'd also like to get some type of replacement phone in the meantime...
Here are the pictures
EDIT: People keep requesting pictures of the battery. Here they are
ALSO: To answer many questions: EVERYTHING was stock/Samsung that I had received when I purchased my phone. Stock battery, charger, etc. Additionally, my phone was NOT rooted.
Edit 2: Thanks so much for all of your comments and insight. The real big question here is -- Do you think I have an actual legal case? As in, a product liability case. Or, do you think I'm better off taking what the PR team will give me? (Perhaps, a new phone, new mattress, etc)? I did not suffer any TRULY substantial damages to myself or personal property. I am really tossed up on this...Any advice would be appreciated.

If there's even a case. Sounds like he just wants to be reimbursed for the phone and damage done to his bed. It also sounds like he doesn't even care about the burn to his finger.
If he does file a lawsuit, I sure hope his phone was stock (I have no idea how they would check now) and that he was using the stock battery. I'm sure samsung is going to bring up the wall charger and micro usb cable as well.
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda premium
Im sorry, but in my opinion, things like this shouldnt always warrant a lawsuit. Does anybody really think that Samsung is guilty of wrongdoing here? Yeah it sucks and is scary that it happened, but just file an insurance claim to replace the bed and phone and move on with life.
How many GS3s have been sold now, plus all the extra batteries and only one has done this? Pretty good if you ask me.
Sounds like it was probably just a faulty battery or something like that.
Anyway, like I said its just my opinion and thought id share it.
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda premium
I couldn't even tell that was still the battery since it had warped and expanded so much due to the explosion....now I'm not going to charge my S3 right next to my head when I sleep.
Reimbursement I vote in the least, I mean what's a "600$" phone gonna be for them lol, I assume it was a faulty battery I've read that before about it melting a case

Seems like in both cases of exploding iPod Touches, a lawsuit against Apple followed:

http://www.patentlyapple.com/patently-apple/2013/02/apple-sued-for-exploding-ipod-touch.html
This actually happened to me also so I know what he is going through. I set my phone down to charge. I woke up about an hour later to a plastic burning smell. I grabbed my phone and it was literally melting. Not on fire, just extremely hot and I ended up burning my fingers. I immediately pulled the battery out. Let it cool off (the smell didn't go away) and then it powered back on and has been charging normally ever since. It's kinda scary to think what would happen if I didn't wake up and notice my phone almost blowing up.

Oh yes they got it months ago. But this happened while charging, in the air conditioning. So there was no reason for it to be that hot. When I turned it on there was no program in the battery list which was eating up the battery so it is very strange.

Phone heating up to quickly!!!

Well the headline gives it away guys!! OK so, I dropped my phone last week(I had a case on it, but its a cheap case off of Amazon)! Nothing happened to the screen, but the power button is now way more sensitive than it should be, and my E4GT heats up a lot quicker than it normally should! I have the Qcell battery! Is it the battery or the phone! Please let me know! Thanks again for all of your help!!
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
Where is the heat coming from? The bottom of the phone or top? If its the bottom I would say it might be the battery. If its the top I would say its the cpu. Are you overclocking? Are you playing any intensive games? Do you have an app that can read the temp of the battery?
Sent from my SPH-L900 using Tapatalk 2
It's coming from the middle of the phone. I have an app telling me the temperature of the phone! So maybe its both!! I just barely got the battery on March 25, 2013! It's gone that quickly!
I'm under clocked at 800mHz through "Set CPU" on GB27. The other day I was outside and it hit 127°!!! Should i get a new battery, or a new phone?
Sent from my SPH-D710 using Tapatalk 2
No I barely play games! I use Pandora a lot, but I listen to music through my HMDX speaker and its not in my pocket when listening to Pandora! Should I do a Factory Reset! My battery life decreased also!!

Ohh I fixed this problem. I ordered a hyperbion battery and used it for a couple weeks and realized the qcell is farrrr better. So I put the qcell in the fridge after charging it over night one time and left it in there and came back about 1-1 1/2 weeks later and swapped the batteries in the fridge. That seemed to fix it so I used the qcell until school started 2 weeks later. And the fridge made the hyperbion better than when I bought it

On release I got my D710 from Sprint and it was overheating too. It was super hot especially when I charged the phone without a battery cover. It literally almost burned me so I exchanged it at Sprint a few days after and they even hooked me up with a free oem battery. I think there's a bad batch of overheating S2s cause Sprint will replace it super fast if you tell them it's overheating too dangerous temps. That's how I got them to replace my phone when my power button broke. To top it off it was within warranty and I had insurance and they didn't want to replace because of power button issue until I said it was overheating lol.

To top it off it was within warranty and I had insurance and they didn't want to replace because of power button issue until I said it was overheating lol.

Haha nice but I don't have insurance or a warranty on it anymore. So I'll just have to save up and hopefully be able to buy a photon or something bcuz it gets really bad signal. Even in my pocket when I'm not using it it'll heat up, especially if apps are running in the background
