That's the only useful thing I've done with NFC too.

Here are some general things you might like to do:
Beside bed to configure powersave options
Beside pc to configure sync and other transfer software
what else is possible ?

I've got 1 by my front door which turns my WiFi off and mobile data on when I go out and vice versa when I come in

I'm using NFC task launcher from the play store, use the app to pick what you want the tag to do then touch the tag on the back if your phone to write to it.

I got one to use when i enter my house. Turns mobile data off, wifi on, waits 5 seconds, and then turns on my computer with wake on lan. Its a Tasker task setup with NFC task launcher.

I also have a tag on my car dock and I'm using NFC Task Launcher. I have a switch tag for it so when I place it in the dock it turns WiFi off, turns bluetooth on, turns media volume up all the way, turns auto brightness off and turns brightness all the way up. I take it out and it does the opposite of all that. Love it.

I have a tip for all you NFC lovers.
If you do not have new NFC Tags you can useNFC ReTag on "old" or already used one's you can't alter.
Most people already have NFC tags around and don't even know it. Your best bet for NFC tags is in ID cards, Passport, driving license, door Key cards, public transport cards. Just try some.
Maybe some soda our beer company handed some out that have been in a drawer or closet. Because once you've seen your phone going to there website, well what else can you do with these?
With NFC Retag you can now scan you're "newly" found, already programmed for something else, NFC tags and let them do a totally other thing than they were intended to do. NFC ReTag can be set to do a hole number of things. It's even good for the environment. Reuse old tags.

Mine arrived the other day. They work well. BUT... they only have 46 bytes capacity. Only enough space for maybe 2x toggles and 1x app launch. ANything more complicated is too big.
The tags look good, but I regret getting them honestly. I wish I bought some 1K byte tags instead

If you only plan to use them to say toggle WiFi, toggle data and launch one app. All in one tap, then that will be fine.
But it wouldn't let me togge my WiFi, data, volume, launch email and turn on my computer lol

Would buying tags from ebay work? They seem to be really cheap like 1.50 for a sealed protected tag and 1kb like above poster mentiond... I'd post link but i cant since im new.

Hello,I heard great things about nfc tags like put one on door entrance so when you get home, scan phone and it turns on Wi-Fi, increases ringer or whatever your home profile may be. How do I do this? I see tags on eBay....getting my nexus but how easy is it to set up so I can have a sticker at home or car etc..

Just got my tags today, got them from tagsfordroid.com. You need to be running Android 4.0.3 to be able to write them.
The tags i got are small discs, like 3 cm diameter, all white with a green android. They are rewritable and i can write to them stuff like text, a URL, a contact card, send an SMS or make a call. With NFC Tasker, i can add actions like turn wifi on, connect to a wifi network, etc.. pretty flexible. You just write the tag and then you can read it back, its basic.
NFC sounds amazing, I have just ordered 10 Stickers. Will test the functionality when they will arrive and maybe when I'm successful, write a small howto.

got my tags from tagage.net.
they have a nice starter pack which includes different form factors/sticker types and different memory sizes.
(ask them to NDEF format them for you as this might not be possible with ics < 4.0.3)
the nfc functionality works pretty good as far as I've played around with my tags. reading a tag is more or less instantaneous and if an app is associated with the data type you've put on the tag, this app is launched and the corresponding action, e.g. opening an url, is executed without hardly any waiting time.
for personal use the app NFC Task Launcher is the way to go as you don't want to scan url/sms/text/vCards all the time. With this app you can automate your daily routine, e.g. turning wifi on when you arrive home.
NXP has two apps in the market that are really helpful. NFC TagInfo by NXP is for getting information about a tag (pretty technical) and NFC TagWriter by NXP is (as the name suggests) for writing tags (contact/url/plain text/sms).
If you have any questions regarding nfc feel free to ask. maybe I will write down my personal experience some time in the future.
A lot of good information here. Where to buy tags, how to get the formatted properly, etc.

You can order the tags preformatted as NDEF. Buynfctags will format them for $0.05/pc. I got 5 sticky tokens formatted and shipped for less than $10.00.
I bought 14 tags from tagstand.com. They have a wide variety of tags (as small as 25mm I believe), as well as "outdoor" styled tags. Their prices are competitive ($1.00 USD/ea), and they have an option to pre-format the tags for you.
I should receive the tags in a week, and I'll post back if they work well.

Check out the Creative uses for NFC tags thread for suggestions. Lots of people are using them to change phone settings when the they get into the car - turn off wifi, turn on car mode, increase notifcation volume, etc. and for setting alarms.
You can use NFC Task Launcher to change your settings and you can pick up the tags for a couple of quid here.

As was mentioned, the best use I've found is switching to and from different settings profiles depending on where I am. Some might say Tasker is good for this, and they're probably true, but as far as I know using Taskers location based setting changing can only go so far.
This allows fine grained control. Say you work on the same block that you live, but you want different settings for work and home...Tasker won't be able to do that for you. With these, though, you just stick one to your desk at home (or door, as some people apparently are doing ) and stick one to your desk and work. It's fast, simple, and convenient.
Also, they allow you to do a thing called profile tags. Basically, it allows you to switch between one set of settings and another using the same tag. I have one next to my nightstand that'll switch my phone to home mode on the first tap and switch it to sleep mode on the second tap...very nifty
All in all, they're a minor time saver. But they're cheap and easy to program, so why not?
Peter
I just bought 10 from buynfctags.com. I ordered them last Thursday and they arrived Saturday from Seattle, WA to Plano, TX with standard shipping.
The only problem I found is each item has a 5 item minimum. Total was about $12 for 5 cards and 5 keyrings. I got the NTAG variety after seeing somewhere that they are fast, reasonably sized (data-wise) and preformatted.
They work just fine and I've set up using NFCTask Launcher for use in my car that will turn off my wireless, turn on bluetooth, set my volume to 14 and start playing my music.
So I am supposed to order those that are NDEF formatted right?

hey I am from Greece. here we don't have nfc tags. except from Xperia tags which only one shop have them. and I don't know if they work for other brands. so where I should look to buy some nfc tags?what type of nfc tags for my a5(2017)? please help.

NFC - only active when phone is on?

today my nfc tags arrived and i intend to use some of them to activate different profiles.
e.g. one tag is in my car - on 1st touch it turns wifi off, bt on and brightness to 100%, 2nd touch wifi on, bt off and brightness to "auto"
so, the only problem i have... nfc on my hox only works when the phone is turned on and unlocked. simply turn on the screen is not enough, it must be unlocked.
so is there any way to use nfc while the phone is off? otherwise nfc seems useless to me. iirc the nexus s recognized nfc tags even when it was turned off.
someone with an idea?
I'd say its either a bug, or security feature, most likely the latter
Reason being I think because of the whole NFC wallet thing, you wouldn't want somebody to be able to take your money just by getting close to you for instance

It's a change introduced in ICS for security, the phone must be unlocked to use NFC.
I'm not aware of a way to bypass it. I thought a solution on my Galaxy Nexus would be to use tasker and widget locker but couldn't quite get it to work - I might have another look at it.

Easily share stuff from one phone to another nfc enabled phone.
Use it to scan nfc tags that has been programmed to do something specific to your phone.
Quickly pair your phone to an NFC enabled bluetooth speaker. (I think Nokia has one speaker with NFC).

Strange it doesn't work on mine, or at least it didn't last time I tried it (maybe on 4.0.2). I'll have another look when I get back tonight.

You can basically set up your phone to do a specific task when a pre-defined tag comes into contact, like change sound profile, turn on/off different options (BT, GPS, WiFi etc.), launch an app etc. For example you can have a tag placed on your car holder to make your phone do certain things when you are inside the car (i.e : switch to car mode, launch a navigation app and turn on GPS etc..). You can also encode data (contact info, URLs etc..) into them, so when someone else with a NFC capable phone comes along they can load up that data by tapping on the tag. For example you can have your contact info put on a tag, so when ever someone taps on it they can load all your contact info without having to type anything (more like a QR code).

FYI, you can do most of those stuff with apps as well (without tags). I use an app called Llama, its allows you to do certain things based on the location and time. I have set it to turn on wifi at work and at home and turn it off when I leave those places. Make the phone silent after 12 at night when I go to sleep etc.. It uses cell tower triangulation instead of GPS, so doesn't drain the battery, but accuracy is good enough.
It can also be used to check if a RFID card is close to the phone. There's an app where I live which does just that for the local transport card.

Depends on your country, bank and retailers. In Japan for example NFC payments methods were available long before Android/iOs came out. They had NFC chips incorporated even in older feature phones. Its nothing new, even most modern credit cards are capable of NFC payments (they use passive RFIDs). The difference between using apps like Google Wallet on a NFC capable Android phone is they add another layer of security and provide real-time account information.

NFC Implant GT-I9505

Hey everyone, So I want to get an NFC chip implanted into my hand, don't ask why, ill think of a reason later.
For now I just want somebody more knowledgeable than I to tell me if this tag I am looking at [xM1 [Mifare S50 2x12mm Glass Tag]] Would be compatible with the broadcom NFC chip in my Galaxy S4 I9505?
It says on the page, " 13.56MHz ISO/IEC 14443-A Mifare S50 1K RFID chipset "
I believe there is a rule I cannot post links to pages with products for sale ?
Its from a site called dangerous things, as that's the first I found selling implantable chips..
Share with me your information please And thank you in advance!
And while im at it, Im trying to think of some cool uses for it, Is it possible to write to it something that lets me use it to pay for things ?
I have heard of people that do this..
As far as i know the broadcom nfc chip does not support the mifare protocol. You may be able to write NDEF data to it but i don't think you will be able to use the original mifare protocol.
Also i suggest you look into chips who can run you custom code like javacard

Anyways, I am an app developer, look up my name on the market. I LOVE NFC, most of my newer apps use NFC in some way. I have an app called NFCSecure that locks your device unless you have the nfc tag you setup as a key. thats a pretty big one.
Also tag a hue. turns tags into light switches for hue lights. i can lay in bed, scan my tag and if my light is off, it goes on and vice versa.
My ltest app is nfcvault. uses the tag as an encryption key for passwords, pins, etc.

haha yeah, I just wanted to hear what they had to say, xD Dont you find the stories funny ?
Oooh nice, Ill have a look see through some of your apps. They look pretty cool!
You should make one that encrypts data like images or videos or documents that requires an NFC tag to decrypt! /wouldBuy 10/10

I've got an implant from dangerousthings. The guy who runs it is very intelligent, very well connected to all the right people, tech, body mod, health, etc.
I've had it in for probably about a month, I got it a day before we started our trip to burning man, and even out there with so little time to heal it was fine.
I love NFC and have been writing all kinds if crazy apps that utilize it, so the tag gets a ton of use. I'm planning on getting an NFC door lock and building and NFC auto start for my car. There are soany awesome things you can do with NFC, and having a secure one on you at all times is pretty awesome.
I also have a magnet in theother hand. h
