We have both european SG3 as well as US-ATT SG3 models. Our EU carrier has notified the 4.0.4 version will be updated to 4.1 next month, Oct 2012.
What is the published US-ATT schedule for update from 4.0.4 to 4.1 ?

I gave up the wait in September and switched from ICS to JB based off the TMO and Sprint leaks. Even with the bugs and random issues, I like it and don't really want to switch back. Now I have to impatiently wait for an official release so the rest of the bugs are worked out.
Too many of you have ADD....The phone has only been out since June/July ...Im riding the stock rom till JB comes out, which I will bet will be November. After that I can mess with custom roms, but for now, too many bugs and TW is not bad, on JB I figure it will be even better so will hang with it till I get bored. You guys that already jump around from rom to rom are the type to ditch the S3 when the Notes 2 is out or when the S4 is out in June/July next year anyways.
I will admit I am ready for JB though already.

I disagree, I like TW enough. But I feel I have more control over my device without it using another launcher. I doubt I will go to the Note 2, 4.8" is pretty big - but I went with this phone over the original Note because the 5.3" was a little awkward. I won't upgrade to the S4 next year either. I'm not going to pay full price. Just because I jump around from ROM to ROM doesn't necessarily translate to jumping around from one phone to the next.
As for JB, I'm glad to be running it. It's pretty smooth.
I understand this is a completely biased statement as I only have one perspective on the subject, but as an AOKP JB user since i got the GS3 (about a month) I have not run into any real issue with bugs, instability, or anything otherwise not expected from a stock ROM. Anyone who is 'waiting' on JB has already missed their ride, although there are hourly shuttles to catch you up with the rest of us....hop aboard.

I don't think AT&T would release that as they don't want to mess with iPhone 5 roll out and steal that thunder. However the smart thing is for Samsung to push the crap out of this and put pressure on all carriers to release JB before iPhone 5 comes out.

With an official or leaked release of 4.1 of s3, will that improve the "original dev" section with faster development since the developers will have access to drivers they didn't before?

I think the carriers will defintiely slow the process down. However, I really don't think it will take as long as it did going from GB to ICS for SGS2 variants. If you recall, some SGS2 Variants in US and Canada just got their ICS around the same time SGS3 was released (LOL). But the upgrade from ICS to Jellybean is fairly small and I know that Google and Samsung (as well as other manufacturers) are trying to make updates a ltitle more timely than they have been in the past. Whether or not this will hold true is yet to be seen. However, seeing that there is already a leak for i9300 so soon shows me that Samsung is making more of an effort. I don't recall the ICS leaks for my i9100 coming out this soon
I'd be surprised if AT&T even releases JB for the Galaxy S3. Doing that would only benefit the customer, and it is strictly against AT&T's policy to do anything that might benefit the end user.
I'd say there is a 90% chance we will all be stuck with ICS unless we root and flash our own JB custom ROM's. AT&T doesn't care if you use ICS. Hell, 98% of people with the Galaxy S3 in the United States don't even know what ICS and Jellybean are, and they couldn't care less as long as the phone functions.

You get an A+ for positivity, but unfortunately, you're giving the carriers too much credit, especially AT&T. In the end, Samsung pushing out updates in a timely manner is as useful as rubber lips on a woodpecker because the frigging carriers are guaranteed to slow sh*t down so they can bloat the software up to their liking.

I imagine alot of ppl will be underwhelmed when we do get JB. There's not going to be much visually different, and project butter pushing things to 60fps throughout the ui will help, but this is already a pretty smooth phone. I was seeing some lag issues, but I reflashed my current rom & everything is back to silky smooth. Don't get me wrong, JB is a welcome addition to an already amazing device, but it's not going to be like the jump from gingerbread to ics, so I can be patient. Also, as a couple others have stated, I'm loving TW over AOSP now. I never thought I'd say it, but TW is full of incredible additions to Android that I don't want to lose. I love the beauty of stock Android, but it's a fair trade for all of the functionality.

I still doubt we'll see official 4.2.2, even if i9100 gets it. There are WAY more people with those phones, so Samsung may throw them a bone. Doubt we'll be as lucky, or any other s2 model.
Sent from my cell phone telephone....
I went to Vegas this weekend and flashed a Stock based ROM on my GS2. I carried 2 phones around, my main Nexus 4 and GS2.
I must say, with all honesty, in low light settings and just in general, the GS2 camera is still awesome. Hands down. Kinda makes me sad. The one annoying part is I had to keep killing tasks and clearing memory when I could. Battery just dies if I don't kill tasks constantly.
As a phone, its still great. I love my Nexus 4, but GS2 was my go to phone when it came to Camera shots. I never would have gotten the Nexus 4, if GS2's resolution was higher given the screen size.
Anyhow still a champ, even 2 plus years this phone still has my uses. I am keeping it stock mainly for Camera performance.
My two cents.
Oh yeah forgot I was running the stock 4.1.2
It'd be nice for 4.2.2 but I'm thinking this device has reached it's limit. At 768 MB of memory, it does drag and slow down on stock. Anything above Jellybean, I'd be surprised to see an official ROM for it. Regardless this device kicks booty in CM10.1

Honestly I was super shocked with the jb update, but this phone is more popular than you give credit, and I think we may see 4.2. I mean it already runs quite smooth just with CyanogenMod and jb 4.1 and 4.2 aren't too much different. Now I don't think we're gonna see a big touchwiz update, but I think they may update the android version.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-T989 using xda app-developers app
Folks,
I tend to agree, we likely will never see stock 4.2.2. The odds of this happening are low. Samsung has too much hardware in the wild to really consider Hercules for another update. I know getting hardware support hinges on staying on vendor supported releases. The gear is already +/- 2 years of age. Phone companies consider retirement at that point to simplify their supply chains. Especially considering all the new gear coming out, SG4, Note 2, etc adnasium.
There comes a time you fish or cut bait. I cut bait a while back. I am even moving my wife to a used sg2s Hercules from a nexus s. Here nexus s is a dog compared to my herc.
Hercules just got cm 10.1 in the last couple days. 4.2.2. Via clock work mod.
I am running aokp. It is 4.2.2. Latest rc 1.
It is smooth and has all the bells. I am considering a different kernel at this time. What I am running though is very stable. No crash no lock up no pause. Plus keep number of apps to as low a minimum as possible.
There are ways to get better battery performance. Especially when you happen to carry two phones and use Hercules as a camera. Cut it back to 2G and kill all syncing. You will see a massive improvement in battery performance.
Also get an app from play store that is free that came from xda that helps track which apps are using Cpu and engaging the screen. It is called wake lock detector.
You will not get days and days of battery but you will see marked measurable improvement and still be running jb 4.2.2

Honestly, I don't think this version of the Galaxy SII is gonna receive Jelly Bean 4.2.2 officially. I'm surprised that we even got a Jelly Bean update considering how buggy ICS was. Also, 4.2.2 custom ROMs seem slower than their 4.1.2 cousins on this device, with the exception of those compiled with Linaro.
In short, there's a slight possibility we'll get 4.2.2 TouchWiz but I doubt it.

I hope they dont wait till the release of note 3 before giving us note 2 users the 4.3 update. If so I will be force to consider if a nexus phone, cm is great but sometime they come with problems, not that TW doesn't.

I picked up N4 and it certainly isn't a big jump to 4.3 from what you have in 4.2.2
Its just a lot harder to follow through all the threads something because it has a much bigger base of users, plus it's hard to know what you can and can't flash compared to our phone.

Agreed, completely ready to give up on Samsung already.
Idk about giving up on them but compared to some others their features and phones specs are good to a point
New update sorry if it has been posted all ready just seen this

SGN2
doesn't bother me too much because 4.2.2 and 4.3 don't seem to be all that different as far as functionality

4.3 runs smoother in terms of scrolling smoothness and lag...and at least for AOSP ROMs the battery life is much better.
There are the other little feature blings. But as Android system upgrades go it is kind of minor.
Hi, anybody knows anything about the release date for the official kitkat update for the note 2? thanks

Screw that. I want a CDMA OnePlus device...Or hell I might just go TMo.
Screw Knox and the increasing DRM crap Samsung forces on consumers.
I love my note 2 but I think from now on ile just stick to nexus device. I bought this phone based on the screen size really. All I want is a stable kit Kat cm or cm based ROM which seems unlikely at this point.
I keep thinking is it too late to buy a nexus 5 or just wait for the n6.

I've been running Beanstalk 4.4 for a good month and change now. Only rebooted once with that one. All the other MK4 roms would reboot once or twice a day.

I ran beanstalk 4.4 for about month also. I really like the ROM I don't really understand a lot of the settings but for the most part it ran smooth. I was hoping for a volume bug update but there hasn't been one. And battery life fluctuated.

Funny every time somebody wants info for an Official update release there is always somebody that has to chime in about how they already have a rooted custom rom with it like nobody knows.

This is a developers website. If I didn't see those something would be wrong.
I personally think if want official info. Go get it from Samsung or your carrier. Some one is just nice enough to share the info here.

He asked about a stable KitKat cm based ROM as well, not an official update, hence my suggestion of beanstalk.

Yeah I think I'm just going to hold on to my 2 until the 4 comes. I was itching to get a note 3 but I don't think I'm going to waste my time.
I'm thinking about getting a galaxy gear watch to play around with till I get a new phone

It is a better longer term option for everyone...Especially given how Samsung has chosen to ignore their formerly flagship phone wrt updates. Further the much waited 4.4 update is probably the last if I had a=to bet.

Galaxy Gear only works, so far as I know, with unrooted stock (yuck) touchwiz ROMs on select devices of Samsung's arbitrary choice. You're better served both now and later with not spending the $200+USD on Samsung locked hardware.
I have seen users with smoothest claim gear works. Smoothest is a n3 stockish rooted ROM.

I don't mind running stock touchwiz. I actually recently unrooted and returned to stock 4.3 when I was planning on trying to sell my baby and I don't mind it one bit. I have never been a fan of aosp so staying stock isn't the end of the world for me

I didn't mind TW but I really got tired of waiting for Sammy to release a 4.4 update for us, and then having to wait on Sprint again... It's nice to be able to use KitKat on the Note 2
