Epic Touch Developer Edition - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

I was web surfing and I came across talk of "developer edition" phones. Is there a such thing as a "developer edition" Epic Touch, and if so what are the differences between the two?

The developer edition comes with a clear see through body so you can see the insides transform from circuits to brick as you refine your developer skills.

The Developer Edition is basically a Verizon thing because they want the bootloader locked. Our phone's bootloader is already unlocked so there's no need for another version.

Correct, the developer edition is just a way for verizion to profit off of their nazi device policies. The developer editions cost more and the regular versions on Verizon have bootloaders that are locked up so convoluted the majority of the time it will brick the device if you tamper with it. The sgs3 on vzw has a emmc disable code in the bootloader if you tamper with it it triggers the code and locks the emmc essentially making the device into a nice doorstop. The only difference between the standard device and developer edition is the bootloader and price, otherwise everything is identical. If I remember correctly the sgs3 developer edition was around $600 vs $300 at launch. All devices in vzw are more expensive than their counter parts on other carriers, and they don't have the greatest of selections because a lot of manufacturers don't want to adhere to the no tamper policy and make the devices brick themselves when the bootloader is tampered with. HTC just doesn't support the htcdev unlock method for Verizon phones, Motorola, prior to being bought by Google didn't have a problem locking them up tighter than a frogs ass, and Samsung couldn't come to an agreement on the sgs2 line with Verizon so they didn't even have an sgs2 option. Even the galaxy nexus was locked up until Google sued the pants off of vzw for something to the tune of $80m for violating their contract and won. After that vzw started offering developer editions and a marked up price almost double the standard counterpart.

+1 to Motorola locking crap down. My first Android was a backflip on AT&T. It came out in March 2010, I bought it in May because it was the ONLY Android on AT&T at the time. We didn't get root until November.

My wife has my old photon, I got rid of it as soon as the et4g was available cuz unlocking that thing was a giant pain in the ass. It broke one thing or another, mainly 4g but it constantly had problems. I ended up doing no unlock stock with root only for her and no recovery or anything cuz it was too much hassle. Now tho I guess they have a pretty solid workaround for the bootloader issues but she doesn't want me to flash her phone so I haven't tried messing with it again, which makes it easier for me anyways. I already have a et4g, evo 4g, kindle fire and sgs3 I flash regularly. My dad got the sgs3 which he likes to break and make me fix on the regular. Sometimes I think he does it just to annoy me

Pretty sure the developer edition of phones with locked bootloaders are sold straight through the manufacturer, not the carrier.

Verizon carries them online I saw the dev edition sgs3 on there when I was suspending a line on my moms account for her. That was actually the first time id seen one. They were charging 599$ on contract for it I was like wtf is that 599$ on contract you can buy the damn thing brand new off contract for that price, and its all to get the unlocked bootloader with no kill switch. I've seen a fee articles about the vzw sgs3 having something in the bootloader where if you unlock it it triggers an emmc lock and hard bricks the phone. I didn't like vzw before cuz they have stupid ass policies and don't do a damn thing to help you when u have an issue but after I saw that I realized just how forked up they really are. All they care about its $$$$ once they get you to sign your contract they cast you off and don't give a flying fart in the wind about u any more. They don't even prorate the etf, you have a month left and want out you're paying $350 ota getting sent to collections to be raked over the credit score coals
ETA: I meant to add I'm not sure if the one I saw I the vzw site was actually sold directly thru vzw or if it just linked to the vzw compatible sgs3 thru another seller or the manufacturer site or whatever. But either way vzw shouldn't be forcing people to have to buy a device a full price just cuz they don't want to be restricted with what they can do with their phone

They would never put a 'protection' like bricking the emmc just because you unlocked the bootloader. That would be counterproductive for Verizon and Samsung. The only bricks reported from flashing the unlocked boot loader are from people who didnt read the directions properly and jumped the gun

They were able to flash the leaked unlocked bootloaders, but the original bootloader would lock up the emmc when trying to find an exploit to unlock the stock bootloader. Im not sure it was intentionally designed like that but that's what a lot of people were speculating when it first occurred. And knowing how anti root and unlock Verizon is I wouldn't put it past them. This was only a few days after launch tho. Now there's a leaked bootloader you can Odin that's unlocked that came from the dev edition. It seems alot of locked bootloaders now disable something in the device if tampered with. The Motorola bootloaders disable 4g and it took almost 10 months to find a workaround for the photon bootloader to keep 4g and get full unlock. It wouldn't really be counter productive from a profit standpoint since you'd have to purchase another device since Verizon doesn't have the greatest warranty policies. My mom had a phone that's screen completely died 2 weeks after purchase and they wouldn't replace it because it has a chip in the chrome paint on the branding that was there at purchase time. Verizon is pretty shady, they will lie to you to get you to bend to their will. Right now we're fighting with them over plans, she has just a basic phone/txt no data plan that she renewed in Feb, and they are forcing her to go to one of the new everything plans by Nov, and she's been on the same plan for 11yrs with the only addition the entire time being unlimited txt 4 years ago.

Umm.. not really.. bootloader looked for a signed kernel, much like Motorola phones. If the kernel on the boot partition isnt signed the bootloader will reject it and stop the boot process. Simple solution is to flash the stock signed kernel with Odin. You were able to modify other partitions such as the recovery partition and system.
As for motorola, they're notorious for making **** not work.

Yea Motorola is a pain to do anything on, I was just going by what vzw sgs3 owners had been *****ing about on release week. Only sgs3 I've played with is the sprint version, so i haven't had any personal experience with what the vzw version was doing, but from my experience with Verizon over the last 11 years of dealing with them for my mom I wouldn't put it passed them to brick phones for tampering. I hadn't kept up with what happened afterwards tho just read in passing that people were having huge issues that mimicked our brick bug when trying to exploit the stock bootloader to unlock it. I ran into similar issues with a friends original Droid on Verizon when I was trying to root it for him where it wouldn't even turn on after trying to flash a modified bootloader and ended up having to get him a replacement. My wife has my old photon and that thing was a ****ing nightmare to try and modify. Next time I upgrade ill be sticking to Samsung or nexus devices, cuz I'm sick of having to jump thru a hundred hoops to unlock and root my phones.

Tell them their CEO literally said HTC will no longer be locking bootloaders according to their facebook. If enough people do it we may actually get a real response.

Dude.... You think that's all it is? I tried, I know Vicious tried and tweeted about it. It's not HTC at all... Like in fact it has nothing to do with HTC period... HTC allows for unlock on the HTC One on all variants but "ours". You see where I'm going with this? The "MID not allowed" is Verizon saying F you to it's customers. I called HTC and Verizon, and Verizon told me to call HTC and see if they will directly hook me up with an Unlock_code.bin for me and when I did call them they dug real deep for me over the phone and actually contacted HTCDev which technically is completely separate from the HTC that we know and love. HTCDev got with me over the phone and basically told even though Vzw tech support told me to call them that it's not them and that someone in Verizons corporate office made the call to have HTCDev blocked for the Verizon variant completely.
Verizon is no longer supporting bootloader unlocks for any device. Not just HTC but all Android devices that can be obtained through Verizon will have a locked bootloader and if there is any site available through the manufacturer that supports the development community Verizon will not support work with or have anything to do with it. Kind of the same way that Motorola has there site where you can unlock devices it will not work either....
I think it's complete crap I really do. It's not fair that we dump so much money in to these companies to be able to have what we want and enjoy our toys the way we want and Verizon shuts us down and locks us out... They may as well just partner up with Apple and drop all Android devices and stick to iPhones because they are just as bad (nazis) as Apple is with there OS and iDevices.........
I hate Verizon now and for the rest of my life!
./end rant
Even so, we should be able to unlock it. I don't care who is at fault. HTC should be fighting for it.
HTC won't fight for it. Verizon has millions of customers, of those, very few actually care about an unlocked bootloader. It's the rest of the people you need to sway in order to start any kind of productive movement.
I learned long ago to say the hell with Verizon and their locked down phones. Every time a new device it's Verizon and it's locked up, people are still shocked.

That doesn't have anything to do with bootloaders does it? That's unlocking. Being able to use a phone on any carrier. Verizon could "unlock" our phones but we'd still be screwed since they are the only ones using their particular type of network, right? It's not like GSM phones where you could potentially use the same phone on multiple networks, right?
I'm not trying to be argumentative.. and I may have that network thing all wrong.. but I don't take any hope from that article at all, unless the point is just "Obama is interested in what mobile companies are doing to their customers" in that case, I could see where you might find some hope.
As for the "HTC should fight for this." .. Have you seen HTC's bottom line? They are in the crapper fighting to stay alive. I think the ONE is a fantastic effort to stay relevant. It's a beautiful, powerful device. Homerun, in my opinion. But Verizon is also the largest wireless company in the country. HTC needs Verizon way more than Verizon needs HTC.. and that means HTC has essentially zero leverage.

As for HTC fighting to keep their devices unlocked on Verizon? What phone manufacturer has told Verizon to suck it and walked away with their phones? None. Verizon makes the rules and manufacturers gladly abide by them because they're the biggest fish in the pond. Period. It's all about the numbers.

I think the only people who've been able to play hardball with Verizon is Apple. In essence they walked away from Verizon when Verizon refused to let them have full control of their device. Updates. Everything. Apple went to AT&T, grew that company larger than it deserved almost solely with the iPhone, and then Verizon had to give in.
No Android manufacturer will ever be able to do that due to the nature of Android. Samsung says they'll walk, Verizon shrugs and talks turkey with HTC and Motorola to increase sales. Samsung is likely the only Android manufacturer that would have any real clout.
In short, I think we'll be playing this game with Verizon for a good long time. Or until another mobile provider can produce a network with a comparable, competitive option. I mean let's face it. I doubt any one of us is very happy with Verizon, especially us modders here at XDA. But yet here we are.
Verizon is the only provider that can give me not only 4g where I live, but a full 5 bars of it. Every other carrier has their version of 3g in sporadic splotches on their maps for where I am. Plus my wife gets a 22% discount from her job so that makes them a good deal more tolerable.
Apple is as big as Verizon so they can do that, but like you said, no Android manufacturer has the power or clout to do what Apple did. At the end of the day, Verizon's corporate accounts are just too lucrative to pass up over something that matters to such a small minority (us). In the big scheme of things, we're just ants biting on a robots toe.

At the end of the day I look up at Verizon; glare, tell them I hate them and then hold out my fistful of money for them to take. I am without option too.
Verizon is only protecting its network by locking bootloaders. Could you imagine how many people call cause of a bricked device. They got tired of spending money on fixing idiots who don't know what they are doing. We have to suffer. Verizon is smart financial wise but then why choose a network or a phone that has a locked bootloader .

There are 2 parts
"Open applications: Consumers should be able to download and utilize any software applications, content, or services they desire;
Open devices: Consumers should be able to utilize a handheld communications device with whatever wireless network they prefer;"
the first, (Open applications) is what is being violated by VZW I'd imagine bootloader unlocking falls under "applications, content, or services they desire"
Really what it comes down to is if VZW is saying that an we can't use an unlocked bootloader because it may harm the network, than they shouldn't allow the developer edition device (Moto X) or the new google tablet on the network either.

I don't mean to be rude, but you imaging doesn't make it so.
Open applications, services, and content refers to apps in the play store. Verizon is not doing anything wrong by locking our bootloaders. People have already written to the FCC on the issue and the response has been on Verizon's side.
The boot loader being locked is completely legal as of right now and unless a large majority of their customer base demands unlocked boot loaders, we will be dealing with them indefinitely.
If Verizon were, in fact, illegally locking boot loaders, the FCC would have intervened by now.

If we can't go to HTC about this issue (I do think they are partially to blame), and we know doesn't give a sh*t about it's customers, so we can't go to them. Who can we bring this issue to and possibly make some headway? I mean if we blow someones inbox up enough, or tweet, or whatever method, we are going to be heard. Chances are it wont get us anywhere, but I think we should try. I wish I knew who to take this to. If we find the correct company/person I think we should have a standard message we can just cut and paste into an email, tweet, etc.
If nothing else, we are sharing our headache with someone else. I really wish we could intimidate Verizon as I see that being the one thing that would get us anywhere.
Someone posted something about Verizon losing money through bricked phones because of unlock or s-off. That is a bull**** excuse. They could track unlocks if they wanted to and then just tell the ass who bricked his phone that he is SOL because he unlocked.
Data is the only thing keeping me with Verizon. I am going to start using wifi as much as possible (where it is convenient) and see how low I can get my average data. Before I got my One I went into ATT and said "here is the deal I have now with Verizon, throw together a comparable plan to convince me, so I can convince my wife it is worth switching to you guys." He looked at my plan and said ATT couldn't come close to offering a better deal based on my data usage. Chucked up the deuces and walked out.

[Q] Locked bootloader

I see the developer addition of the Note 4 is available. I do not want a Verizon sucks conversation, but iI am interested in why Verizon locks the bootloader. Does Verizon have an official answer? Does it have something to fo with lost revenue from taking Verizon completely out of my OS? How about those reading this with much more knowledge then I. What are some legitimate benefits to a locked bootloader?
BTW....I do agree....its my phone and I should be able to do what I want with it.
they locked to keep our XDA members from messup the phone from flashing and tweaking then return for exchange when bricked the device ...lol

Officially? It's hard to get Verizon to address any of their customer concerns "officially."
There is some rather reasonable supposition. 1) Verizon sees enterprise customers as their bread and butter. Enterprise customers demand security. Unlocked bootlockers are not secure. 2) Verizon and other carriers are concerned about excessive warranty claims. There's a thread somewhere here where someone tried to root their brand new Note 4. Most people don't even know why they want to root, but they'll do it anyway without the necessary knowledge beforehand.
Was that VZ Note 4 they tried t root bricked?

Can the bootloader on an Unlocked att Note 4 be unlocked

Hi,
I know there is no way to unlock the bootloader on an att Note 4, but if ATT unlocks it would it become an International Version and can the bootloader be unlocked? Sorry if this is a dumb question.
Young fool.... only now do you realize the power of evil AT&T produces.
Now Rosachin, you will die.
(In all realness, no of course not. ATT ain't that nice nor will it ever be. You can unlock the phone in terms of cellular network but that's it.)

Well, I just sent a return request for one of the note 4's. AND just bought a USED sm910T from ebay.
So, instead of me getting a brand new AT&T UNMODDABLE note 4, I will be getting a used but in great condition T-Mobile note 4.
And if I can get out of the restocking fees from the return, I will come out 50 bucks ahead. Cool.
The other new note 4 went to my daughter for xmas, and she already broke the screen. DOH!!
I lucked out this time I guess.
Cheers all.

I never had at&t though.. uhhgg. maybe by the time I just cant stand the stock rom, they will unlock the bootloader? I dont know if that's how it works...
Oh well, sad man here.

Yeah man, I'ved used At&t for years. Some phones still ended up rooting and unlocked (Sky-Rocket, LG E970, and Note II) this is the 1st phone I purchased that couldn't be rooted to install ROMs and Mods. Very annoyed but glad to know after this experience we know not to buy from At&t directly. Either buy unlocked form Swappa, eBay or Amazon or know that you will be limited when you buy from carrier. In the mean time if you really want out, pay the bill so its clear for selling, and sell it online or in person. Also you can wait it out until the next upgrade.

Never again for me, not directly from AT&T & maybe not Samsung. [AT&T-Captivate, and VZ-Note2..rooted and other ROM'd but now ]. Question: what aspect of the hardware allows a carrier's specific bands of LTE to function? Or is it that the hardware is fully "plastic", capable of any LTE banding given the software[albeit locked] and SIM[mine unlocked] ? There are multiple Note4's. AT&Ts also runs UMTS and GSM. T's? Verizon's also runs its EV-DO. Perhaps these 2G, and 3G aspects become irrelevant and the 4G/LTE buildout completes, but the question remains over capability on carrier specific LTE bands.
With my SIM unlocked Note4 I used a VODA SIM this summer in Italy, but don't recall whether I had access to LTE , or evn which data mode functioned.
Ok, I hope I don't get in trouble for asking this here. . I tried to search but I'm not real good on this phone yet. . That's no excuse, I know. ..
Anyway, I received my T-Mobile Note 4 today and I want to root it right away as I am an owner of titanium backup and rom toolbox.
I am wondering if there is an easy way to root my device without installing a custom kernel AND not require a pc?
If I have to use a custom kernel, which one is the most stable?
My device specs are
SM-N910T3
Android 5.1.1
LMY47X.N910T3UVU1DOK2
KNOX 2.4.1
I have data turned off on my phone and disabled data from my carrier. I use WiFi and no data. .
Again I'm sorry for asking this but it's been a real long time since I have installed custom anything and my pc blue screens randomly so I'm afraid to try rooting my phone that way.
Please, step by step, easy tutorial or a link to where I need to go?
Thanks a bunch.

I'd recommend asking on the T-mobile Note 4 forum. We all own the ATT model here.

(In all realness, no of course not. ATT ain't that nice nor will it ever be. You can unlock the phone in terms of cellular network but that's it.)

The real reason carriers lock bootloaders (just remove the space after www and http)
http s://www .youtube.com/watch?v=gpVocvREboo&list=UURAxVOVt3sasdcxW343eg_A&app=desktop
[email protected] the space. Ironically....yeah i will remove the space so you can suffer clicking on the link on your phone...
Since we are on the subject of bootloaders. It's been a while since I flashed a custom rom on a phone. But from what I remember, isn't the bootloader these pictures that I attached? I took pictures on my AT&T Note 4.
Thanks
Yes i have read the whole thing.
Ok, to cut a long story short;
i bought a note 4 on an online australian shop for $470 (really hard without a job)
Anyway, they noted that their phones are from GENUINE Suppliers and i got a Note 4 UNLOCKED from, you guessed it. AT&T.
Now i wasnt too fussed. I was happy i got a note 4 that wasnt a chinese brick phone, since it technically was refurbished from their Hong Kong Warehouse. Anyways
After like...idk 2 months? approx? i decided i wanna root it. Guess what?! BOOTLOADER. WHAT THE ***T!!
Anyway, i spoke to some people, one said he hasnt rooted a phone passed gen 6. and the other person said 'no cant root. Bootloader is locked and no way to bypass.'
Soo im wondering if its possible to root the phone without removing bootloader? I dont restart my phone much and the whole bootloader doesnt worry me so im just curious if i can chuck a stock rom on without worrying about the bootloader.
Some background info:
I am Australian, therefore my phone is running under Australian networks (Boost, Lyca, Telstra, Optus, Vodafone, etc)
It is filled with unwanted, unnecessary AT&T bloatware.

AT&T note 4 update?
I'm seeing the most recent updates being in 2016. Is there any new updates on the progress of unlocking bootloader for this device?

Hi,
I know there is no way to unlock the bootloader on an att Note 4, but if ATT unlocks it would it become an International Version and can the bootloader be unlocked? Sorry if this is a dumb question.

Ripping encrypted DVDs (or DVDs locked to a region) = unlocked
PlayStation 3 = reverse engineered
iPhone = jailbroken
Why isn't the AT&T Note4 unlocked yet? Would offering a bounty help? Is it impossible to unlock? Is it a matter of time? Is it a matter of throwing lots of computation power against the lock?
What will finally get the AT&T Note4 unlocked?

Is there no bounty offered? If each ATT Note4 owner chips in a few dollars, we could raise a bounty of several hundred dollars. Then some tech-wiz can take much time trying to unlock the bootloader.
Anybody else willing to contribute to a bounty?

Petition to Require Unsupported Devices to have Bootloader Unlocked

I have created an official petition to require carriers and manufacturers to unlock the bootloaders of handsets they do not choose to provide updates for.
Since I'm new, apparently I cannot post a link
All this waiting for official updates has driven me bananas. It should not take 9 months to release something that Samsung and Google has already done most of the work for.
I posted the link in my bio as a donation link
https://petitions.whitehouse.gov//p...aders-handsets-they-no-longer-plan-supporting
You'd have a better argument in requiring carriers and manufacturers to unlock the bootloaders of devices that are PAID for. If the device is under contract of some sort, we're basically screwed. But hell, I'll sign it.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-N910A using XDA-Developers mobile app
I signed it, i totally agree
Maybe even off-contract ones only. They unlock carriers, why not bootloaders?
The idea is that if they no longer want to provide support for the device, we should be able to find someone who can. I figured that makes sense. Why are we required to buy a new device when we have the ability to prolong the life of the device.

More importantly, if you're off-contract, they have no issues doing Network Unlock. Following the same logic, Bootloader should have been unlocked as well, since you practically have paid for and legally own the phone at that point, so you should have full freedom to use it as you would.

They (carriers, at least) will almost never admit they don't intend to support a device.

Well I will say this to all my fellow members who bought an AT&T device to just not buy any more of their phones but keep using their network. I currently have two AT&T branded phones that I use. I have a Note 4 and a LGv10. I bought the Note 4 when it first came out and the LGv10 was given to me. Now I have already told the wife that were not buying any more phones from AT&T but will continue to use their services. We're either going to buy phones from T-Mobile or from overseas because we don't want our bootloaders locked anymore. If we pay for a device it's our and we can do whatever we want with it. If we damage it physically or by messing with the software then it's on us. Companies like AT&T and Verizon hate communities like XDA because we choose to get the maximum out of our devices beyond 2yrs instead of what they want. I'm currently grandfathered in on a plan that AT&T no longer has and they hate for it. I have three choices for another phone and neither one involves me buying a AT&T branded device. Nexus, T-Mobile branded device, or by from overseas. Just stop by their locked down carp and just maybe just maybe the AT&T sections of branded devices can truly be bough back to life because they realize that they need the customers more than we need them. Plus I know the CEO of AT&T is a total douche bag for locking down all Android devices. Please stop buying their devices and buy elsewhere. The AT&T note 4 is a great phone but unfortunately it will never see it's full potential like our T-Mobile sibling did. Well thanks everyone for reading this and have a great day.

Samsung announced that they are going to have a galaxy s7 american carrier unlocked version out soon. There are also plenty of unlocked phones to choose from (Moto X Pure, OnePlus 3, ect). Getting a unlocked phone over seas may not work with all the LTE bands, also getting a Tmobile phone also doesn't guarantee an unlocked bootloader.
I'm done buying AT&T branded phones. Just waiting to see what HTC does with the Nexus. Either that or I'll get the 6P.
I signed it
Same. Been with AT&T since 1996 or so and stayed loyal to them even while overseas but NO more. I'm done with them. As of Jan 2017 we're out. I love the note line (daily driver Note 4) but I'm looking for either a LG v10 unlocked or Nexus 6P. I've been looking at other overseas manufacturers as well. DONE!!!!!!!!! Oh and I have the Galaxy TAB S (t807A) with the same issue. That issue is AT&T.
Signed it.

Just read this blog
ALL the us bound s7's had there bootloaders signed
http://www.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s7-bootloader-lock-explained-you-might-not-get-aosp-after-all/

Bestbuy guy said verizon versions will be unlocked. True or false?

Anyone heard anything about verizon Note 7 being unlocked in BestBuy?
What he probably meant is that it is SIM unlocked. Almost all Verizon smart phones now are classified as World Phones which means they are SIM unlocked to be used anywhere in the world on a GSM network. This does not mean that they will have the bootloader unlocked.
Yeah as mentioned above he probably just meant carrier unlocked. Even as far back as the S5 Verizon phones have been unlocked to use any carrier, apart from sprint because they suck.
Best Buy employees don't even know a bootloader exists.

When I was an SES at a few different best buys, we had a guy that was telling Customers that if he liked iOS, he could just install it on a Samsung. After calling him out on it, he told me I was an idiot and that he has done it. LOL

The idiot probably thought an iOS theme for nova is the same as iOS. Unless it actually has been done, I remember years ago my friend had to dual boot Android on his iPhone 3G to jailbreak his ps3 lol.
Lmfao that's hilarious
4G Verizon phones are always sim unlocked but that's the only unlocked we'll have. No bootloader unlocked or anything else

So question would be is it or would it be best to buy from Samsung or Verizon? because i am hoping if i buy from Samsung then i will get all the missing stuff that verizon took away?
Part of Samsung's new security features, unlocked bootloaders will never be offered on major carrier networks in USA regions. This is why TMO devices have locked bootloaders today.

If you buy a Verizon phone from Samsung it will still be the same as any other Verizon N7. If you want it to work on Verizon and have all the original features you'll need to wait on the N930U to be released.
So the question... The oem unlock toggle doesn't do anything.. Just curious.. Mine toggles
