[Q] Getting Back old Info after Flashing A New rom - T-Mobile, Samsung Galaxy SIII

I tried several times to flash a new rom (specifically XquiziT_xD V 69, 70) and every thing worked great but when i tried to re-install my old backed up data like third party software it started crashing on me I used TB to re-install or used TWRP recovery install data only but it force closes a lot of my programs it gets very unstable. Is there any good way to re-install my old data with account info. after a rom flash ?
Thanks

There are some programs that really hate being restored with TB. NEVER restore system settings with TB aside from the very few that are green in the TB app, even than do so sparingly. (I usually only ever restore sms and Internet with TB).
If you have third party apps that are acting up after doing a restore from TB try downloading the app manually from the market (after a clear data and uninstall) than just restore data only. This is assuming you are restoring "app+data" in TB.
Sometimes apps simply don't behave correctly when restoring from a backup ever. In those cases you will simply have to set up the app manually.

Oh, forgot to mention also that if you are going from one version of android to another (I. E. - ICS to JB) most backups won't work right. Backups usually only install properly when restoring to the same version android as the backup.

I've always used tb and never had an issue but as stated only restoring market apps, never tried restoring system apps but have heard bad things can happen. Just last night went from a touch wiz at&t Rom to aokp and restored all my apps with no problems

I usually take backup with CWM recovery and then restore only /data with CWM after installation of the new ROM. But I have not tried it with different rom. I just used it with mildwild but used several times.

God no, the reason we wipe data is to remove incompatible system specific data, the stuff that stops us booting.
Titanium backup. Restore missing apps with data. Let me find angusc's guide....

I think /data has all user data and no system data and system data is in /system. The factory restore also wipes out /data and gives a state in which new phone comes.

I do agree that Titanium backup is much better and flexible option to use. Infact there is no comparision between TB and recovery backup.
What about the App called "Appmonster" ?
It can store your apps as .apk on your sdcard and install them again.

There are many such apps but they don't backup user data. They backup just the .apk file, which could be used to reinstall the app, which doesn't serve the purpose for many.
Thanks everyone.. but i just read that titanium backup is not compatible with amarullz a2sdxd script.

Nope. /system is unwritable.
System apps and ROM components only are in /system.
Messaging app is a system app. Its data is in /data/data/com.android.providers.telephony/databases/mmssms.db for example. Any settings changes you make to the messaging app will also be in /data/data.
Infact any setting at all, or any data for anything in system, is stored in /data/data. When you restore /data, you restore all the /data that relates to changes you made to /system

Oh yeah... forgot about user data
Sorry about that.
But what I use is only whatsapp and Facebook, the only thing I have to do when I get the apps installed, is to log back in.
I use Titanium back up. It's working fine for me. I use it every time I update ICS by Sandvold. It's so time saving, and data saving.

Help Please!!!! MD5 Mismatch

Hello All,
So I attempted to install my first ROM today and it was successful. Prior to installing I made a nandroid backup and it looks like everything went smoothly.
I tried out the new ROM and it wasn't to my liking. I want to restore to my Stock ROM but when going to backup and restore in ClockworkMod Recovery and clicking restore it says Checking MD5 sums then says MD5 mismatch!
What does this mean and how do I fix it? Thanks.
I figured out what I did wrong. When I made the nandroid I renamed the file and put spaces in the file name. When I renamed the file again with no spaces and tried another restore it worked perfectly. Thanks.

Yup. CWM backup files can't have spaces in them. Are you the one who was looking for suggestions to try custom ROMs? Did you not like DW?

Hi yoft1,
Yes, I was the one looking for suggestions to try ROMs. I actually liked DW. It was easy to install and booted fast even on the first boot. My main issues was that the Google play store kept force closing and wouldn't work. Also, there was no Gmail app. I know I can download it from the play store, but since it kept force closing it wouldn't work. Also since I am a Telus user the data icon shows 3G and not 4G for some reason. I know it's just cosmetic but I would like it to say 4G. I reverted back to stock for now.

If you know how to clear application data that should fix the force close. Roms always have the odd problem here and there upon first installation but they can easily be fixed and not touched again. If you're interested in trying again I could walk you through your issues, the end product should be a ROM with absolutely zero stability issues.
Thanks for all your help man. You are really going out of your way to make this a smooth transition for me. The only other issue was when I backed up my mms/SMS messages through Titanium Backup and restored after running DW it didn't take for some reason. All of my text conversations were gone. Also my call log was empty as well. What programs should I back up to restore this info? Also, I guess I could backup Gmail and restore that as well correct? Again your help is much appreciated. Peace.

I use SMS backup and restore, rather than tb, others have had issues restoring texts through tb too. If you want to restore call logs, call log backup and restore has worked well for others but I can't personally attest to that since I don't restore call logs between roms.
No need to backup gmail since it's all email in the cloud right?
The only things I backup are my apps (using titanium so I don't have to re download them, restoring through TB is much faster, just make sure you're not restoring any system data though) and my SMS.
No problem man.

You aren't supposed to install any system data? Because I restored Gallery, Google Play Store, Maps, SMS/MMS, Voice Command, Voice Recorder, Voice Search and Youtube.
Those apps were all considered system data, but I wanted to keep them so that's why I backed them up. Was I incorrect in doing this? Thank you.

System data usually doesn't play well across different ROMs. It's usually advised to not do that as it will cause random force closes. When you go into TB and go to batch operations, Just run "Restore missing apps with data" and you'll be fine.
Restoring data is okay, as long as it's for apps. This is your save data for games, etc. System data on the other hand, causes problems. Anything that isn't restored through "Restore missing apps with data" can be downloaded or is already included on the ROM.

I use Mybackup Pro - you can backup both contacts and messages
---------- Post added at 02:13 AM ---------- Previous post was at 02:05 AM ----------
I did also get the mismatch recently. I don't know if it was a glitch. In my rom manager it shows cwm 5.0,2,7, but I recently flashed cwm touch. From the rom manager, I booted into recovery, and backed up my rom. Flashed a different rom, didn't like it, and tried to restore the one I had just backed up. I got the error, with no changes to the file name. So after completely reinstalling the previous rom, I shutdown, and booted into recovery with the volume up/down/power, backed up, and was later able to restore. It seemed to matter how I booted into cwm.
If this happens to you again without you changing any names, reflash your recovery and if your on the touch recovery then flash the old recovery.

Backup Question

Hey,
How can I backup my phone settings, the apps(and their data) I have? and restore those apps and settings including their placement on the home screens.
The reason is I am using CM10 and I want to switch to AOKP to test it, and I don't want to download all my apps again and define the phone again.
there is a backup and restore option with CWM will this help me?
thank you.

Yes, a Nandroid backup (what you see in CWM) does exactly what you need.
It creates an image of the entire system (OS, system and user apps + data).
In case you're having issues with your new ROM, or simply don't like it, just restore your backup from within CWM.
so I can do a backup in CWM, then flush AOPK rom (instead of my CM10 ROM), then restore from backup on CWM.
And I will have all my apps and settings on the AOPK rom?
wait, I misread your question I think...
You are running CM10 now, you only want to install AOKP and restore all of your apps, right?
If so, then no ... a Nandroid will be of no use to you.
Use the Titanium Backup backup app from the market instead.
That'll backup all of you apps + data on your internal SD.
Once you have AOKP installed, first app you download from the market is Titanium Backup and then restore the apps and data from the backup you made while still in CM10.
By the way, do yourself a favor and buy the pro version. It can batch restore apps & data instead of having to do it one at a time
As for your phone settings (google account, wifi networks and stuff) that cannot be backed up as far as I can tell.

[Q] Flashing different ROMS SGH-T989

When flashing between ROM's and restoring data i'm having trouble. I just wanted to know if the data from a previous ROM is compatible with the new ROM. I'm doing a full wipe ever time and using TWRP. I tried flashing from slimbean to PACMAN but I always get stuck on the boot in PACMAN when I try to restore data from slim.
Should i be doing a full wipe and restoring apps via Titanium instead?
Thanks

I've never had a problem restoring data when upgrading the ROM (ie slimbean from 7 to 7.5 most recently). I read somewhere that this was a common practice and have been doing it for a while now with no problems. My issue only surfaced when switching between ROMS.

U cannot restore system data to different Roms, u can restore apps, apps only with no data, diff Roms have diff signatures, if u try to restore data from one to the other ur going to end up with a soft brick, updating a ROM and restoring is OK because it has the same base files, those same base files are not compatible with a diff ROM, now if its the same base rom like cm or PAC of something like that its doable, still not wise but doable, but seems like u made up t mind already so if anything happens u have been warned lol

I use tb. After I'm all flashed, debloated the way I like it and a few other things done, I do 2 batch restores. One for apps with data....and one for the other apps with apps only selected...no data. Never ever had an issue. Maybe the odd app doesn't work right, but nothing I have on my phone lately. Everything works fine. The only thing I need to usually fix are ringtones/notification sounds of anything I restored with data...cause it doesn't restore the previous sounds for some reason. (Alarm clock, handcent, Voxer....for examples)
I think the NEVER restore app data started when our jb roms were new and all ports....was a precaution devs suggested to eliminate that as a reason for problems. Now days I think its fine to restore app data. Again....not system app data tho!

It's a good possibility considering it doesn't start rebooting until you restore something.

If you are talking about restoring Game Data. Then what you may want to try is to install the Game. Open up My Backup Pro, and restore your game data. I would suggest trying this one app at a time.
Ya that's all I'm trying to do is mostly get data like from go launcher, games and some utility apps thers 237 of them and to the previous post ya it only crashes when I restore apps then have to resort to factory restore and nandroid restore which restore of the nandroid works perfect

237 Ummmm.... I think it may be time to do some house cleaning. Restoring Data from that many apps is bound to cause some issues. Especially if done all at once. I would suggest only doing one, or two at a time. That easy it will help narrow issues down if they occur. Also I would suggest not restoring data from Go Launcher. I've seen that cause issues.
