[Q] kies update and root - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

so when i connect my s3 to my pc kies tells me their is a firmware update but not sure what its for also i dont want to loose root
so my question is will i lose root after i run the firmware update threw kies? is their a way to keep root so i wont loose it after the firmware update?

Depends what the update is for. IF its just a minor update like a modem update then you wont lose root. If its a major update (like 500meg update) then its going to load the entire firmware file with the bootloader and system directory which will cause you to lose root. But its not a big deal, just reflash CWM via ODIN and then root using the 3.0.7 Superuser file that is floating around, I dont have it in front ofme.

how do you flash CWM via ODIN?

The same way you flash a ROM. You get the TAR version of the CWM, then flash it the same way, use PDA and dont touch anything else, it will basically overwrite the recovery image to the CWM one.

2 questiona can I upgrade my CWM and what is odin?

I am still a bit of a noob, I used the one click root to root my Epic 4g, but I am running an old version of CWM 2.5 I believe. I want to get 2.2 when it comes out but people keep telling me to flash a rooted one with odin, what is odin?
The one-click gave you cwm 2.5.1.0. In order to get the ota, you will have to go back to stock recovery. Odin is a program for your pc to flash your phone and can put the stock recovery back. You can upgrade to cwm 3, but you still won't get the update. Shortly after the ota drops, there will be both cwm and odin flashable images to update your phone without waiting for the ota.
how do I update my CWM to 3? is it easy?

I am now more confused than ever, I read that post but cant figure out what ext4 is and I dont know if I need to unroot first or just do that one click over the one I have.

ok... so let me make sure I have this straight:
you currently have stock 2.1 but are rooted with oneclick root and you want to upgrade to CWM3?
ext4 is more or less the way our phone store files. Stock uses something called rfs, ext4 is supposed to be a faster and "better" file storage system (but we won't debate that in here )
If you want to install CWM3, I believe you must aslo convert to ext4 (someone please correct me if I am wrong). Doing this conversion and root is exactly the same process as the oneclick root you did. Simply extract the files and run run.bat with your phone plugged in with usb debugging enabled. You should be able to do this with your out of date version of CWM installed still since this is basically just an upgrade.
HOWEVER, since the official froyo 2.2 update is literally right around the corner, my suggestion is to not do anything as of yet and see if you receive the OTA update this upcoming week. Since you are simply rooted, you should still be able to get it. If for some reason you do not receive the OTA update, the developers here will have already created a flashable rom to use with odin or they may have an update.zip file you can run from your phone.
Thanks that cleared things up for me a bunch I now just need to wait and see if I can get the ota update.

Auto Root EL29

I had done the auto root w/o odin on EK02. I just received the OTA update for EL29 and installed it. Reading the auto root thread it makes it says if I want root +cwm I need to use odin. If I just want the root can I use the auto root or do I still need to use odin?

Question, if you were rooted how did you receive the OTA update? I thought rooted devices would cause the OTA to fail?
The exploit used in auto root was plugged in EL13 + newer so it no longer works. Sfhub made a pre-rooted one click odin package that you can use. It has a no data version that doesn't overwrite any of your stuff and allows you to keep all your settings. It's just as easy as using auto root. If you want CWM after flashing this then you can go ahead and use auto root to flash whatever kernel +CWM you want.

Since I used the auto root it did not effect the OTA update. I just made sure any changes that I did make that I needed root access for I changed back to it's original state.

Need some help applying OTA update

Hello, first of all, I'm sorry for the noob question. I tried to search for the answer but I got more confused than when I started. I have rooted my SGS3 just to be able to use the Wifi hotspot, I'm not into other modifications or anything, I just wanted the hotspot. Now the phone wants me to update through OTA, but of course it's not working. My questions are:
-Should I go back to stock (following the videos from qbking77) and then apply the OTA? Is it safe?
-Should I go back to stock and MANUALLY update the phone?
-Is LF9 the latest OFFICIAL update?
-Is there anything else I should consider?
I don't care about custom roms or any other modifications, I like the phone vanilla BUT with the hotspot enabled. I was looking through a lot of videos and threads but I could't find a good answer.
Thanks in advance!
The latest official release is LJ7. You have a couple of options to get the update.
- You could go back to stock to accept the update. The key is that you need the stock recovery installed for the update to work normally. You could then reflash the custom recovery if you like.
- You could manually apply the update from the recovery. If you phone is bugging you to apply the update it then you probably already have the update ZIP in your \cache\ folder. You could also download it. The normal OTA update will only work in the CWM recovery (not TWRP) but there are modified versions posted here that remove the check to allow it to work from TWRP.
Other considerations: If you are using the WiFi Tether for Root users it will no longer work one you update to Jelly Bean (LJ7). You will need to unisntall that and get version that was modified by TrevE.

Thanks for the help! Yes I think I have CWM on. I followed a video from qbking77 (I think) and installed it. Or at least it was something like custom recovery or something the like. Do you think I can apply the update directly from CWM? Or it would be easier (and cleaner) to go back to stock recovery and do it "officially". Also, are all stock recovery the same? I ask because there are some different files in qbking77's website. I don't know if the version of stock recovery matters at all. Also, thanks for the tip on the modified app.
You probably have CWM recovery. You only need the stock recovery if you want to let the phone apply the OTA (i.e. it prompts you to accept the update). You also have to have the phone in a completely stock state (root is ok). You can not have any modified system files.
If you want to apply the update manually you can also do that with CWM. You can copy the file (something like eec955eb4a5b.update_SPH-L710_LI3_to_LJ7.zip) from the \cache folder to the internal sdcard of your phone. You can then boot into CWM recovery and apply flash the ZIP update. You must have stock system files in order for this update to work also.
If you have modified any system files (I removed the system version of Swype) you have to get back to stock in either case.

Ok, so the only thing I did is install the wfi hotspot app after rooting, I didn't touch anything else. So I shouldn't worry about system files, right?
You mentioned that since my phone is bothering me with updates notifications, it is because it already downloaded the update into the "cache," right? So I should just find that file, put it in the sdcard and flash from CWM? It's really that easy?

It is probably there if it is prompting you to update.
One step that I almost forgot about. When you do the update you will reinstall the script that detects a custom recovery and it will install the stock recovery.
There is a good procedure here that gives you the step by step process, including flashing the Team Epic file to prevent the updated ROM from restoring the stock recovery. If you do not flash the Team Epic file the update will still be successful and you will still have root, you will just end up with the stock recovery.
The process is really easy and it is the one that I used to update from LI3 to LJ7.

[Q] 4.2.2 and Root and Restore

I suppose I should know this, but I don't
I had root with 4.1.2, and updated to 4.2.2 leaked FW - I knew I would loose root, but I thought I could re-root but that does not seem to be the case. Is this so?
If I want to go back to 4.1.2, how do I do this becauseI don't seem to be able to get into TWRP recovery. I thought this was supposed to stay on after upgrading?
why dont u just flash stock 4.1.2 rom via odin for revert?
Good idea, thanks. I was just thinking that myself. Getting the file from sammobile (uk version)
Will it be obvious where each file should go in Odin, will there be three files to select (pda, csc and modem, or just PDA?)
Are there any instructions on XDA?
EDIT
I managed to do it, got into a boot loop though, but was able to restore

trying to update from 4.1.1 to 4.1.2 manually

so i downgraded from 4.1.2 to 4.1.1, i sim unlocked my phome and i installed the root thing, both with odin.
now i want to upgrade to 4.1.2, so i have this link to a 4.1.2 zip file, not the same as the other odin files which were like md5 or something that i used with PDA with odin, here is this link.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2387423
specific download link
http://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=23060877489997375
it is on the first post of that forum, it says
update412.zip
now my question is how to i use the zip file to update, it says something about mobile odin but there are no real instructions to update from 4.1.1 to 4.1.2
also will i loose my downloaded files and my root?
also how to update to 4.3 after i update to 4.1.2
thanks for all your help!!!!

You don't have to update to 4.1.2 to update to 4.3.
If you go with a custom ROM, you will keep root. Although, if you flash stock ROM with Odin, you will lose it.
Mobile Odin can be used to flash (don't interrupt it), if you wish to go that route. No special instructions.
You can also flash using Odin (PC version), once again, don't interrupt it. You'll have to unzip and use the PDA file.
Finally, if you wanna flash a custom ROM, you can install TWRP, which you can get from GooManager on the Play Store (menu then install recovery). That will let you flash a custom ROM in recovery.
Now before you do any of that, please take the time to read and fully understand what you are doing, w/e option you choose to go with.

You can only flash the zips via recovery. Download both zip files to your PC and copy to a good quality micro SD card. Place the card in your phone and boot your phone to recovery mode. First you flash the 4.1.2 zip, then reboot to recovery again and repeat the process with the 4.3 zip.
Yes, you will lose root and you may lose your downloaded files which is why you need to do a back-up before updating. Once you have updated to 4.3, you can re-root your phone.
