Sprint SGS3 won't install updates after rooting - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S III

Hi all,
I rooted my Sprint SGS3 shortly after purchasing it on launch day, and ever since then, I get prompted to download and install an OTA update about once a week. I always accept the download, and the system restarts, but I'm then presented with the Clockwork Mod recovery screen. I select "restart phone" and everything boots up fine, but...no update was made.
My Android version is 4.0.4 and my Kernel version is 3.0.8-618049-user, according to my "About device" page. Any ideas?

Thank you for the link. I'm afraid I don't understand, though. Which of those links am I supposed to download in order to get updates working?

Go to Android Development and download any ROM based on LG8. By example Blazer or FreeGS3.
As a summary OTAs only work with Stock recovery.

 why do ppl flame noobs instead of educating!?
Anyhow on topic... dude you don't accept the OTA from sprint when you are rooted, that is asking for trouble.
The thread w8setter posted has the rooted updates of the stock ROMs. Download and flash the odexed LG8 and the wifi fix in CWM and IGNORE the notification for the updates.
Also, have you considered a custom ROM? I'd suggest FreeGS3, it is very stable and give good battery life and the pesky update notification is blown away Before installing it though, you need to flash TWRP recovery which superior to CWM. The easiest way is to download GooManger once installed open it and grant SU access and tap menu then "Install OpenRecoveryScritp".
Additionally, google is your friend and the search function in the forum helps in some way Read a bit more on how Root works in Android, pros/cons and what or what not to do while in Root, like for example never update from carrier OTA.

Thanks a ton! Very informative. I'll put this to good use. I have flashed a custom ROM (ParanoidAndroid 2.1), but I don't like it much and will probably give the one that you recommended a go.
As for why people flame newcomers, who cares. I'd rather pay mind to an informative post like this one than a trollbait from someone that likely has little to boast in life apart from their knowledge of customizing mobile phones and therefore has to milk it for all its worth.

Dragon Rocker. You are one classy dude. It's been a quite a few threads (100s if not more) since I've seen a AWESOME response like this. Most people forget that they were there once. People like you are what keeps XDA a good place for people to learn and not afraid to ask. Thank you for that. No problem Hope it helped!
The flaming sometimes keeps new people away... Some members need to remeber that not everyone learns that fast or easily when it comes to tech and XDA should also be a place for learning and sharing knowledge, think it was like that in the beginning.
I for one, like to help out as much as I can and give back what I've learned from here. Well, it's this way now...before I was a sort of a silent member that just read and only posted when there was a real need :/

Do you know if I'll lose data? Also, If I install the update now, is there a way to regain root once I lose it? Thanks.
All I want is root and tether
i dont think they would be stupid enough to push out an update that would force everyone's phone to lose all their apps and settings, unless of course that update was an ICS update.

Install OTA, then download and install busy box and superuser app. Then use Odin to flash rogue stock ek02 kernel/recovery in development section. That should be all you need to do, to gain root.

Check the tread in development that says [dump]
Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA App
first of all the update is not going to flash if you are rooted.
second if somehow you flash it just root like you did the first time.
updates don't wipe data but if you try to flash it on a rooted/non stock phone you are going to have to wipe and reflash anyway.
Hmm, hopefully I get this updated soon. Thanks for the help so far
Ok, I've been reading in the threads mentioned in the posts above and still feel somewhat confused. Apparently in the thread with "dump" in the title, I have to be on a stock EG30 "odexed" rom to flash the EK02 update.
I am currently on stock EG30 "deodexed" rooted rom. So do I need to first revert back to a stock odexed EG30 rom? Then odin the ek02.tar? Then find a root method?
So they've started releasing the OTA?

Man why dont you just update with one of the rooted roms in the forum instead of dealing with all this what should I do and I am confused. All you need is here and if you are rooted already why are you worrying about the OTA..
I believe FOTA apk will stop you from seeing that. There is a disable update script you can run that freezes that(pm disable com.samsung) link here ). I mean way more options than what to do is says I have the update

Can not install system update EL30, WHY????

ok, so i have ACS and CWM installed on my phone, along with the impaled keyboard patch to correct the lagging typing. With that said, I try repeatedly to download and install the EL30 update from the sdcard, and it begins to install, then aborts and says failed. Has anyone experienced this and what am i doing wrong???
You are trying to install a system update while on a custom rom. That IS what you are doing wrong.
Just let it fail and you will be good to go. Without EL30.

The OTA will not install if you are rooted.
You will have to Odin back to stock if you really want the OTA.

But you're rooted. That means you aren't on the stock kernel and might have had the Asphalt game removed to conserve space on /system.
You would have been able to find out why you couldn't update with some initiative on searching and reading threads here prior to posting. There's tons of these threads in pages 1-3 on both Q&A and General sub forums.
Research a bit more, then upgrade to CWM v5 and flash an EL30 based rom. There are stock-like roms available so you don't have to lose your comfort level of look & feel.
ok, nikon, thankyou, but i did search around. hence, why i finally posted a thread. threads are free and probably answer a great number of peoples questions who are afraid to ask questions for fear of feeling stupid. i am an airline pilot, so i am not stupid, but not as educated on rooting phones as most of you all are. Thanks though. so, are you saying that while my phone is unlocked, i will not be able to install EL30? i wanted to fix the speaker phone feedback issue that was to be addressed in this patch..

Correct, you will not be able to install the stock OTA update while being rooted. However, there is an easy solution to your problem. What you're looking for is probably this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1461377
I'd still recommend you make sure you're on CWM v5.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1357655
For your "get back on 100% stock" purposes, here are Odin and Heimdall packages that Toadlife made for EL30. These are not the official .tar files, but this is close enough for right now. The files here will not flash the EL30 modem, that is currently a manual flash.

[Q] Root/unroot questions on new update release

Hey everyone. First off I have done some looking into this so I apologize in advance if it seems like a newb question...but I couldnt find any solid answers. I am use to flashing roms but this is the first time I have just waited for a stock update.
I am running the stock 2.3.6 Rom but I am rooted. I have read that updating may or may not work but might cause issues. The last thing I want to do is brick my phone so I just need some clarification.
What do I need to do to accept the current update? I have not been able to clarify the proper way to unroot my t989 and I have read the stickied threads.
Any help would be appreciated!
I will with hold personal comments and just say you need to read more. There are plenty of threads regarding what this update is and how to flash it. In fact, theres a thread a few posts below yours that is titled [HOWTO]ODIN FLASH new UVLDE UPDATE {Recommended for ICS}
Thanks for the reply...however even that thread does not address my specific questions. All it does is tell me how to install it which I could very easily do if I had a stock unrooted phone. Out of the about 10 threads I have read all the way through I have yet to get a straight answer as to my questions.

I havent tried that method but I and many others have used the normal way...push CWM via Odin, then flash superuser from recovery.
Ok just for the heck of it I did a CWM backup and backed up everything with Titanium and accepted the update. The update just restarted the phone and it booted into CWM and just stayed there with no sign of change or downloading anything. I tried to see if there was an update on the sd but there wasnt. Rebooted and all is the way it was. I tried to click on software update but it just said "no firmware" as always.
Questions go in the Q&A section
Sorry guys I don't get it.
Are you saying that we can root the update? I got cwm flashed, but the zip wont root anymore, it simply will not work.
Or, are you saying to flash a pre-rooted rom with the update?
Is there a superuser.zip that works with the update, and if so, where?
Any info is greatly appreciated. I really want old rootie back.

Take a look in the android dev sections to this forum. If you ever update once rooted, you should be flashing a new ROM (clean or dirty flashing) to receive the next update. Running stock ROM in between a Sammy update and while having the older ROM without the newest update will yield that result.

There are plenty of reasons for rooting but remaining stock (such as: tethering, Droid wall, Titanium Backup to allow me to backup and restore app data, removing bloat, etc).
I have flashed custom rooms in the past on my Evo but right now I am happy with my S3 at stock.

I was in the same boat at you. I put it off for a while but finally decided to update tonight. I followed the steps posted here.
You can update your baseband by flashing a properly packaged official baseband zip, or flash from recovery tool (my preference), like the one here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=29820376. There are also unofficial, or leaked basebands, available to flash from all-in-one zips, such as the one here: http://goo.im/devs/freeza/Galaxy-S-fre3-LIGFirmwareModemAIO.zip.
As far as the build version goes, that does not have to match your baseband (modem). Most of the ICS ROMs are LG8, although there are some LI3 ICS ROMs to choose from. There's also a leaked build of Jellybean, builds LIF & LIG, with a third leak LIH reportedly coming out tomorrow. Once rooted, you can update your build version by flashing the ROM of your choice, based upon the build of your choice.
One of the top developers, and probably the greatest asset to this community, is freeza. He explained the difference very well here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=32095775
That's a long-winded response, but I hope it answered your original question, and helps you out.
Have fun!
Edit: Once you're rooted, you'll still receive OTA update notifications, which will continually annoy you until you choose to update and reboot. Once you reboot, the update will fail because of your custom recovery (you will NOT lose root) and the notification will go away....until the next OTA...

Excuse me for my stupidity but I'm new to android. I'm also using the sprint variant of the s3 and have it rooted with stock rom. However my build number is IMM76D.L710VPALF9. I'm assuming the last 3 are the update versions. What is the current version and how do I update to it?
Also, I'm rooted with Clockwork mod 5.5.0.4. How do I upgrade this to version 6.0.1.2? Will I have to unroot then root again?
Thanks for clearing anything you can up. Don't mean to pirate the OP but I figured I'd post in this thread rather than make a new one. Thanks again.

That is one of the reasons that I am rooted... so I can use WiFi Tether. I do not it much. Hardly any data at all. But when I am in a spot and need a wireless connection and I only have my phone it comes in handy.
Some other reasons:
- DroidWall: Lets me block individual apps from accessing the internet.
- AddFree: Block ads in some apps.
why would you do that?

The link will show you three different ways to upgrade. Short answer is yes you can upgrade through cwm and keep root and cwm recovery. Read the first two posts in the link over and over until you know exactly what you are doing.
Good luck!

Personally I am going to use the computer odin method. I want clean partitions etc, then upgrade to whatever evil1art cooks up.
Lol!
Ive answered variants of this question at least a dozen times today! No offense.
No you wont get ota and it wont work unless you are 100% stock.
Go to the firmware thread in my sig and it explains a lot, provides downloads and instructions.
Check what all is there and ill be happy to answer any more questions.
