Hey, not sure why i can't update to jb leak ota 4.1.1 . I had no issues doing it on my GF's sgs3 t999. I am on uvalh2 stock, i renamed it to update.zip on the external sdcard, i put usb debugging on, and after i applied update from external sdcard it said "emmc/dev/block/mcbl####". My phone is rooted but not sure if that's the problem. If anyone can help me that would be awesome. Thanks in advance,
Jake

See my thread below- It can be done if you return to unrooted stock, but then the fun really begins as I cannot now root. On the plus side the ROM is awesome and runs perfectly- SMS and Calls over WIFI work. I think they are VERY close to release.
I am reflashing 4.04 to get Root back

Thanks fonz, I'm going to try that. But if i have to unroot with i update to JB. Can i access CWM to restore nandroid backup? I wonder if the issue you are having is the same that i had. When i flashed cwm with odin, i had to make sure auto reboot was not checked, and after it passes, pull the battery and go straight into cwm. If it restarts it goes back to Android stock. I had that issue With uvlah2. I'm not sure if that's an issue with 4.1.1 too. But if i can't access cwm after updating to JB i think ill wait till the update, because i just wanted to test it and then restore nandroid B. i wish there was an exact date for JB release, I'm getting kinda antsy. Every JB custom rom I've flashed had too many bugs to stick with. thanks again

That may be it! I will try that next. I had auto reboot on and it went to stock as you say. I have reverted the phone twice today so if you want to play you can. The ROM is really excellent. I think I will try one more time and then wait for release or at least for an Odin compatible ROM (tar.md5)
Just make certain to have Titanium Backups- I could not easily restore from Nandroid, but Titanium worked well. I restored by reflashing stock and then rooting again. Then restore from Titanium...

Oh yeah that's a great idea. I didn't think of that, so basically flash stock back through odin and then after rerooting, restore nandroid backup. I'm going to try it now. And yeah, uncheck the auto reboot, after it passes, exit odin and just pull the battery out or just power off, and then vol up + home + power and you should go straight to cwm, don't let it start up or else you lose cwm and will have to reflash. And what sucks is that every time it boots up you lose cwm but i just flash CWM thru rom manager everytime and after it flashed i just hit reboot into recovery. Thanks again Fonz

i have a T989, rooted, Clockwork Mod, and installed some stock Android (sans bloatware) MOD.
i had updates set to automatic and am now being bugged to install the new TMobile update, which doesn't seem to be able to install with Clockwork, and i can't turn off the persistent Update prompts.
i've already bricked one GS2, and obviously fear doing it again. I wouldn't get another chance, i don't think. (i do have insurance on the phone, not sure if it would cover a rooted phone?)
what can someone tell me about the TMobile update and Clockwork, or whatever i need to do, go with the update or stop it somehow...?
thanks for your help.
Ota update requires stock recovery.
Grab one of the updated stock roms and flash via cwm. Then Odin the new baseband.

i think i have one of those stock roms - i chose one that was just 'the same thing but without some of the standard apps'. how can i check to see what rom i have...?
and what do you mean by baseband? the new update? is it already dl'd to my phone? i've searched through the phone's dirs (rooted File Explorere, i guess) and could not find anything...
sorry to be a pain - i can't brick another one, of course... (
is this what you mean by a 'stock updated rom':

No, look for the KL1 release.
Baseband is your radio btw. Don't worry about the radio for now, just work on getting the rom flash.

ok, found Deodexed_KL1_T989 (T989UVKL1 by Whitehawkx) is that what i'm looking for? -
couple of questions:
he says on the post:
"DONT FLASH - add files to the zip in the app folder, then flash. Or usb connect drag to sd the use some rooted file explorer to place in system/app then reboot."
Flash or don't Flash? I'm transferring the zip to sd now, then i need to move it to system/app...?
once i've 'flashed' what do you mean "Odin the baseband"? i have Odin, used it last time...
thanks

I flashed the ROM, now i have 2.3.6, and now i'm stuck with 2 OTA notifications, one states postponed, and choosing START for the update does nothing.
help?
I had the base load on mine with a bunch of stuff frozen and Clockwork on it (plus root)
I first unfroze all the stuff I had frozen, then ODIN'd back the stock recovery. Didn't touch anything else, then told the OTA to go ahead.
It updated just fine -- removed root of course. I then ODIN'd back the clockwork recovery and re-installed SU, then re-froze all the boatware.
Done in about 15 minutes -- no muss, no fuss, didn't lose anything.

You can probably clear this up by formatting /system in CWM. Then wiping cache and dalvik. Then flash the FL1 update. Hit advance, fix permissions and then reboot.

did all this, nothing's changed. i'm unable to get Odin to see my phone in DL mode. when i boot into DL mode, the device manager shows an alert on my phone. in normal, the drivers work fine and Odin sees the phone.
damn.
So I'm getting tired of waiting for Sprint to roll out the damn ICS OTA...and even when they do, the Touchwiz leaks I've seen don't look terribly interesting. So I'm considering going to CM9 Alpha 2, having already experienced it on my HP Touchpad and loved it.
My original thought process was: backup all apps and settings, use QBking's guide to install CWM, do an additional nandroid backup and move that onto my PC, and install CM9 A2.
My problem is that I'm currently on completely stock Gingerbread EL29. No root. So I can't use Titanium Backup in case I have to go back to GB. I guess theoretically then I could go: Stock -> Stock Root -> Titanium Backup -> CM9A2...but I'm aware that you install CWM as part of the CM9 installation, so trying to shove TB into the mix might be redundant.
My questions are the following:
1. Is a nandroid backup sufficient for this kind of move, or should I be looking to fit Titanium into the mix as well? My understanding is that Titanium would be more or less required to actually get those apps to cross the GB-ICS threshold, short of downloading them all again. But it seems like more work.
2. QBking has videos on how to go from stock GB to CM9A2. But what do I do if I want to go back to EL29 GB, on the offchance I decide to go for Sprint's OTA?
3. Assuming I do go back, can the nandroid backup I made before installing CM9 be used to restore my stock GB settings (after I reinstall the EL29 kernel), or will that brick my phone?
Thanks in advance.

Hello! Welcome to the AOSP club.
1. Restoring data is usually a no-no for these ROMs because they might cause force closes and slow downs etc. Ultimately, your mileage will vary, but I wouldn't try because
AOSP roms automatically install all the apps you have installed from the market! It's an awesome feature. If some apps aren't automatically installed, then you can find them in data/app or system/app of your nandroid and push it through root explorer or manually install them
2. I would head over the dev section and look for sfhub's oneclick el 29 root. Whenever I want to flash an ICS rom and I'm on ICS, I first use sfhub's oneclick to go back to stock rooted gingerbread, then I go about and install stock el26 cwm and flash etc etc. I don't know if stock root can accept OTA, but I'm sure you'll find a way to back to stock stock in that thread, or in the sticky of dev section that says Auto Root package.
3. It will brick your phone. As a general rule of thumb, don't do anything in the recoveries provided by ICS Roms, as over the past month the E4GT community have seen a high rise in bricks due to them. It will hopefully be resolved once samsung released ICS Source for epic 4g touch, and we can get a real kernel to mess with.
Good luck and have fun! Remember, once you go AOSP, you can never go back.
Why cm9 rather than a leaked version of ics? Im not trying to be an ass or concince you otherwise just curious. From my viewpoint the leaks are stable and some are in odin so its baaically a 1 click install after rooted? Everything about an alpha version makes me nervous and cm9 doesnt seem ready to me so i wonder if im missing something.

u must not have used a2 because there is less wrong with it than any tw leak there has been ....
just because its a alpha doesnt mean anything its a daily for alot of people almost everything works ....even stuff you will never get on tw like naitive tether and blue tooth controllers like ps3 wii etc
Well I went ahead and did it. No issues to report just yet.
A few post-CM9 install questions though:
1. How do I set speed dials on my phone contacts? I've been searching around and can't quite find it.
2. After ODIN'ing the phone but before installing CM9, I was able to boot to CWM recovery by turning the phone off then holding vol-up + power. But now when I do that it boots into Android recovery. How do I boot to CWM recovery again?

This is my first Samsung. I have been on HTC until now. I have been wondering the same thing about recovery. I also tried to reinstall CWM from the included Rom Manager it just freezes. Also, I had a problem this morning where I had to use ODIN to put CWM back on and I wiped cache and dalvik and then it would no longer boot. I tried to restore my back up and the same thing. Just froze at boot screen. I had to start over. Luckily I had a pretty current Titanium backup to quickly put my programs back on it.
So, I have the same question as you about CWM and also wiping cache/delvik and restoring the backup.

Never touch rom manager for this phone as of now it is not compatible and could brick you. To answer both of your questions about recovery, I do not recommend flashing a different kernel with CM9 the dev did this for your own safety to prevent bricks, and they're really is no need for it on CM9 until you need to update it. Play safe and save your phone, try to save time and you'll brick it
O...k...
That poses problems for my next question. Namely, my signal seems to have taken a nose-dive since installing ICS. I don't know if the signal has actually degraded, since I'm no longer on a Touchwiz-based ROM, or if it only seems like it's degraded, because perhaps the ICS signal detector is more accurate than the GB one and my signal indicator was incorrect before. But I just had a few calls earlier today and there was more static than I'm used to.
So, how do I go about getting another PRL? The workaround I saw for that involved "flashing" a version of the stock kernel onto the SD card long enough to get another one. But if I can't get into CWM...
Can any one answer why I can't restore a CWM backup or even reboot after performing cache or dalvik wipe? I really like this phone, but it sure seems like rooting/recovery/roms work the same as it did on my HTC phone.

Here's a link to an FC22 CWM Recovery. ODIN this guy into your phone - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1563547&highlight=fc22
@Aganar - The way I've been getting the whole PRL / Profile thing is ---- Get all setup in CM9 the way you like it, fast backup everything via your preferred user land method (titanium, smsbackup, call log backup, etc). Roll back to a Stock GB ROM (calkulin EL29). Update PRL / Profile. Immediately upgrade to ICS but dont wipe the cache. Restore apps & logs from backups. Havent had a single issue...
takes about 10 min round trip.
I guess my concern is, if the flash from GB to ICS is what caused the signal degradation in the first place, why would flashing back to GB in order to update the PRL have any benefit, if I have to flash back to ICS again?
You won't lose the PRL update after you reflash.

Are you sure? There are all sorts of warnings about that recovery and ICS.
Well its been a while since I have modded this phone. I had turned it back to stock to wait for ics and I used the odin method and it worked fine. But then two days ago I wanted to try some of the new ICS roms out so I rerooted and installed the darkside ics rom and it was good but then today I see there is an update with some important patches so I decided to go ahead and update. So I pulled the odin file in the ICS thread to update but I did not wipe and go back to GB and now it installed and passed fine but the phone is not working at all. It powers on and gets to the start screen but when I press the android to get started it gives me a force close for the android services and framework. I have tried both of the odin files that I have one was the first update to 2.3.6 and the other is the newset update with the patches. But I know that the first one the original update is good because I used it a month ago to put the phone back to stock. So does anyone have any ideas? I am thinking of tring to reinstall CWM via odin then flashing the superwipe then installing a stock GB rom then tring the odin methode again. if not then maybe the keis recovery mode I dont know I will let you guys throw out some suggestions first.

After flashing through Odin did you factory reset the phone? I believe it is a must when flashing back to GB via Odin from ics.
Sent from my SGH-T989 using xda premium
okay update I sucsessfully installed cwm through odin then I was able to superwipe and install good ol juggs 5.0 phone works fine now so the next step is to figure out why those odin packages did not work I guess I will redownload them and try again. Will keep this thread updated for anyone else having problems
No I did not factory reset because I could not get into the phone to do so althought I guess I could have just used the key combo to do it but I didnt even think of that. Anyway I am now back on a gb rom and I am trying again thanks for the info though.
Okay that was the problem. I guess if you want to odin back to a gb stock from ics you should install a gb rom first then run the odin package. Or if you forget then try the key combo for the factory reset. I dont know if that will definitly work but it makes sence. but the first thing i said is what worked for me. So now all is well I am now stock gb.ULVDE 2.3.6 with kernel 2.6.35.11 and that is how I will stay until the ics update comes out. Thanks for trying to help out
Ok lets assume you have a nice clean completely stock ATT S3 that is rooted. I do have nandroid and titanium backups and I do have the google wallet hack working, and froze most bloatware..but this is all I have done to the phone.
What if any is the best way to slap the JB update on here without loosing a thing? I mean loose nothing, games, contacts no resetup of anything, just update to 4.1.1?? Am I dreaming here? If its not possible, what is the easiest way to get updated and back up to my existing state without having to reinstall and resetup everything?
Please dont ask why not put just custom rom instead, I have never found one that at least one small detail was not working or complete, so lets not go there, I want just a rooted ATT JB update to what I already have.
Update through Kies and you won't lose anything except for root. Re-root with CF auto root.
I did the above with a bunch of frozen ATT crap and everything was good.

Ok got JB via Kies easy enough, and rooted with CF...I get 3 apps that are getting errors on boot, Poweramp, Titanium BU and Torrent....
The other issue Im having is trying to get GW back on there , it was removed...so in order to do this I need CWM back on here but can figure out how I used the Qcom toolkit the lasttime and its not ready for JB yet the page says....so whats the easiest way to get CWM back on to load wallet back on?
I did the exact same thing I did with ICS. I flashed JB with kies, and i've flashed with ODIN (wanted to reflash).
I then used ODIN to flash the a cwm recovery (older version). Then I rebooted into the recovery and installed super SU. Started the phone and used terminal emulator to install the latest touch recovery for the phone. Rebooted and installed wallet just like I did with ICS. First the fix, then the wallet app. change your prop and follow instructions.

I used ODIN to flash Mr. Rogers pre-rooted stock JB over my rooted ICS and everything seemed to work just fine. No problems yet. I was curious though since I still have CWM as my recovery (according to ROM Manager) and I thought I would lose that. Anyway, device status went back to "normal" after the flash. I haven't checked the flash counter yet to see if it is back to 0 yet. I'm still trying to figure all this out. This was only the 3rd time I'd flashed anything and I was still nervous! I haven't noticed any extra battery drain or anything yet.
Can anyone tell me, after you boot into download mode to check the flash counter, how do you reboot if your not actually gonna flash anything?
Thanks,
Matt

Mobile Odin and Rogers file is easiest.
If you used Odin and Mr. Rogers pre-rooted stock to go from ICS to JB you will increment the flash counter as soon as you go into your custom recovery. If you use Mobile Odin, than you will not increment the flash counter. This information is in the most current posts: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1739426.
I didn't care about the counter but didn't want to reflash TWRP recovery so I used Mobile Odin and didn't flash the recovery, cache, or Everoot. Fast, easy, and I liked having my Nandroid backup available if something went wrong.
I thought about using moble Odin, but had never used it before and only downloaded it yesterday for future use. So I'm assuming that Mr. Rogers pre-rooted stock didn't flash the stock recovery? ROM Manager still shows that I have CWM installed. I did check with Triangle Away and it shows a count of 2 and binary as "official". I haven't booted back into download mode to check the counter because I wasn't sure what the process for rebooting was if I wasn't flashing something new. I'm a total beginner, so I hope everyone is patient!
Thanks for the help.
Hello
I have Galaxy S3 (ATT), currently i'm stuck at 4.1.1. I can't update to 4.1.2 or 4.3.
I had my phone rooted by the Galaxy tookkit.
What I tried so far is.
1) recovered recovery back to stock (rooted stayed), update failed
2) used the toolkit to remove root, also removed busybox and superuser, toolkit put the clockwork recovery back in., update failed.
How can I update to 4.3?

2) used the toolkit to remove root, also removed busybox and superuser, toolkit put the clockwork recovery back in., update failed.
How can I update to 4.3?

I used this thread to get back to stock so my flash counter would be reset back to 0 - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2363882
Then I used KIES recovery to reflash 4.1.1 just to be sure it was exactly what Samsung intended.
Then when i checked for OTA update (while on 4.1.1) it found one and took a while to download. When it installed the update, it was already to 4.3 - i guess it skipped the 4.1.2 official update.
I then did a master reset from the settings menu and deleted everything so that 4.3 could start fresh. I haven't had any problems with the stock 4.3.
Goofy? Did u try the ota to get to 4.3

Thanks will try that, you did a factory reset prior to flashing this?
At work now, so can't download the files, but will try it later.
What did you use to backup your files?

I didn't factory reset before flashing because i knew that when I use KIES to do a recovery it will erase everything on the phone. However, I did wipe cache and dalvic in recovery beforehand... well, come to think of it, i probably did also wipe data before flashing the 4.1.1 that resets the flash counter.
Regarding backing up my files, I have all the files I need on an external sd card so all i have to do is take out the card. Plus, I also use Google Drive to store my pictures as I take them with the camera. no real need to back-up things because things are saved somewhere else, and not directly to the phone. I will probably use the phone storage more now, though since I won't be flashing anything for a while. Taking a break from flashing.
Hope it works out for you.

have you ever tried Helium? I was planning to use that for backup of my apps data.
last time I recovered/flashed phone was with Windows Mobile... so yeah really behind with all of this.
So if I first use helium for backup and then do factory reset, then flash the stock 4.1.1.
I know google account has all my contacts and calendar.
After I have the stock 4.1.1 back I should be able to update to 4.3 and from there restore the backup?

Never used Helium. I have use Titanium Backup before. It's widely used for backing up app data. You can get it in the Play Store. Make sure you don't try to restore system data - it will cause all kinds of trouble. I don't usually restore app data anymore - well, now that I'm on stock I can't, anyway. I always had some kind of issue, whether it be small or big, when I restored data. who knows, maybe I wasn't doing it exactly right.
I'm not sure if restoring apps from 4.1.1 to a 4.3 base would be safe or not. remember, if you try, that means you'll have to root the 4.3 and that will trip your warranty bit count off of zero, so if you're concerned about warranty, you shouldn't root. (if you upgrade to 4.3 stock, you can go to download mode and see that they now have included two flash counts: one to count custom binaries (that can be reset) and the other one called warranty bit, that no one here knows how to reset yet.)
according to Helium, it doesn't require root. I will make a backup just in case, just want my angry birds progress...
still at work, so I can't download the file (yet), so how exactly does this work, since it says you don't need odin?

After you download it, make sure it's on your internal sd card in the phone. Boot into ClockWorkMod recovery, wipe data/factory reset, clear cache, clear dalvic from the advanced menu, then flash the zip. that's it. near the end of the flash it will ask you if you want to keep root. i chose no since I knew I was going to be update to the official release. I've heard of people having problems trying to update OTA with root.
Just make sure that updating to 4.3 is what you want because it will limit what you can do with the device after you have the new bootloaders.
