Hi gusy i want to ask 2 questions about my HTC One V
1. Can i root without unlocking the bootloader? (without voiding the warranty)
2. i've checked my kernel version and its says: [email protected]#1PREEMPT
what does that root in the version means?
thanks
1. no
2. it's the name of the "user" that made it for HTC
I've followed this--> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1598964
being novice in this area, Depending the things i done & experienced to root and afaik the answers r,
1.To root you must have to unlock your bootloader *(ya have to go through that freaking process ,
2.Also that kernel version showing word "root" doesn't proves its rooted,i also thought initially same abt it.

First of all I would like to say this this is not the usual "How do i root?" question. I'm actually not looking for a HOWTO, but more for a detailed explanation about the process. I also wasn't sure if this thread should be posted in the developers or the general forums, so please move it to the general forum I you think it should be posted there.
I have an HTC Desire HD device, and I have seen countless tutorials about rooting, changing ROMs and changing other components which I actually don't know.
The problems with these tutorials:
1. They don't really explain what they are asking you to do. This actually may be convenient for most users, but I'm the kind of person that won't run any commands on his phone without actually realizing what they do.
2. These tutorials don't explain what can I do if something messes up.
I'm a programmer and I'm very familiar with Linux systems, but I am relatively new to Android. So after reading all sorts of tutorials, here are my questions:
About rooting in general
========================
1. How is obtaining root access in Android systems different from obtaining one in Unix systems?
2. Once I obtain root access, does that mean that all my applications runs as the root user? If so, isn't that a security risk?
3. Android have a different permissions system for applications than the classic Unix permissions system, since each applications must specify what does it want to do to the phone (Make phone calls, read the phone book, etc...), what happens to this permissions system once I obtain root access? Can any application use this root access to compromise my phone?
4. Is rooting my phone considered "hacking", or is it something legitimate like obtaining root access in a regular Unix system? Do all these rooting tools actually use exploits in the Android system to obtain root access?
Some questions about the downgrading process
=============================================
I read that in order to obtain root access on new HTC desire HD devices, I first my downgrade the phone's firmware. The questions below are based on the tutorial in addictivetips (I can't post a link since this is my first message)
1. Do I still have to do that, or maybe there's a new rooting method that doesn't require downgrading?
2. Once I downgrade and obtain root access, can I upgrade my ROM back to the new official ROM with root access, or does that mean that now I can only install custom ROMs?
3. Does downgrading the phone means I expose it to old security vulnerabilities?
4. My phone is branded. The tutorial suggest to prepare a "gold-card" by overwriting some bytes on the SD card, but none of them explained what does it mean. I would like to technically realize what does a gold card mean, and what does overwriting these specific bytes in the SD card mean.
5. What are the meaning of the commands that I should type before rebooting my phone in recovery mode?
Some HTC specifc questions
==========================
The rooting tutorial says that after rooting I should obtain S-OFF, again, without really explaining what does it mean. As far as I realize, this is an HTC specific security mechanism.
1. What is it there for? Is it actually there to make my phone safer or is it there just to prevent me from changing my ROM?
2. I realized that there is S-OFF and Eng S-OFF, and the latter means gaining "Complete control" on my phone. What can I do with this "Complete control" that I can't do with normal S-OFF?
Using different ROMs
====================
1. I saw that there are some custom ROMs with HTC Sense. How is that possible? Isn't HTC Sense a proprietary HTC piece of software?
2. When I decide to use a specific ROM, how do can I make sure I have the latest Android version? Do I get automatic updates like when using the stock ROM, or is it my responsibility to always check if there's a new version?
If something messes up
======================
1. How can I go back to the stock ROM if the downgrading/rooting process messes up?
2. What can I do if a custom ROM installation messes up? Can I go back to the downgraded ROM?
Thank you
Hey!
Here's a link that goes into detail about some of the things you asked about.

Hi Guys,
I have just got myself a UK Xperia Play (factory unlocked out the box). I am interested in rooting it but I am a little confused, so I would like to ask a few questions if I may?:
1. Can I root 2.3.4
2. Will rooting lock my phone, I read about bootloader unlocking, will this affect me.
3. Can the rooting be reversed.
4. Is there a risk of bricking the phone during rooting.
Sorry if these questions that have already been asked!!
Thanks in advance!
1) Yes - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1312859
2) No and rooting has nothing to do with unlocking bootloader.
3) Yes
4) No
Thanks for the reply. Sorry but I have another question:
What are the advantages of rooting? I read somewhere that I can remove pre-installed games/app that were on the phone when I got it and tweak various things!!
I haved downloaded DooMLoRD_v3, is this all I need to do?
Cheers
Removing bloatware, cpu tools for your clock speed, using adfree to disable advertisements, backing up apps using titanium backup. Various advanced user tools require root.
I did all of the above and also used a root-only font changer to install a custom system font.
For the rooting just follow the instructions in the other thread.
Btw, next time this should be posted in Q & A not general.

I guess if you don't know the advantages you probably shouldn't root. That's what many people say
Sent from my Xperia Play using xda premium
Hey Guys
So my friend wants to flash his DHD.
I don't know which Firmware he have.
The reason, why he wants to flash is that the phone laggs as ****.
After flashing, he wants to delete the crap apps, so we need root.
Must I unlock the BL or something? Because I don't have a HTC only my SE Xperia Play.
And is there a good guide how to flash a HTC Phone? And can I root the phone after flashing with zergRush method?
No One ? :O

1. To see the firmware its in setting>phone info
2. If your looking to flash a custom rom you need to root first.
3. To remove bloatware you need root first again.
Search, read and learn. Search some more, read and learn we all had to do it. DO NOT ATTEMPT anything on your phone without reasearching, reading and learning. Unless you want to end up buying your buddy a new phone.

Thank you.
So I only have to run the Advanced Ace Hack Kit and the Phone is Rooted and CWM_Recovery is installed?
Can I flash This ROM after rooting itwith Recovery via "update.zip" or just "install zip" ?
Yes but make sure you read and reread and read again the Effen manual in Ace Hack Kit forum. So that you know the step by step process and make no mistakes otherwise you can screw up your phone. If you do there is an IRC chat connection there in the forum that can help you out, no need to open a new post asking for help its all there.
REMEMBER: If you are going to flash a custom rom make sure you follow that devs instructions on how to install it.
Good luck and enjoy the learning.
Okay, I know how to flash, because I already done all this on my R800i.
But HTC phones are a little bit different.

How to Root HTC Desire HD
Hello everyone,
I am new to android family, as recently i bought an Xperia M, now i would like to ask a few questions and please bear with me since my English are not good enough.
My first objective was to immediately wipe that xperia OS and change it to stock like experience. [the closest i could find is CM11],
so after some searching i found out that in order to do that, i had to unlock the bootloader. But since the phone is new i also would like to not loose warranty, so i read i had to backup TA partitions Before even unlocking the bootloader, but in order to do this i have to root using an exploit. So please enlighten me:
1] wich rooting program should i use since i read many complains on many rooting programs
2]witch program should i use to backup the firmware before taking action [i do not care about photos and contacts]
3]if something goes wrong where do i download the official firmware of my divice to restore it back to normal? [similar to itunes that no matter what happens it restores your device back to normal]
(*) another question: after i root my phone and backup TA partitions, next step should be to unlock my bootloader [that means i only need to install a superuser.apk to gain root access again, right?] or just flash the cm11 and gapps and not worry about rooting?
Thanks in advance guys!

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=53565495, here you are Bro, try to find root in locked bootloader condition bro
hello again, i still got a problem, i try to install fastboot drivers for my xperia m device, and even though the installation finish with success, my computer does not recognize the device properly, [on device manager its yellow] btw i use windows xp
Device: Sony Xperia M C1905
Software: 4.3
Bootloader: Locked
Basically, every single method I have tried to root this phone has failed. All I want to do is have root access to my phone, I want to be able to:
Use CynogenMod (FOR CLASH OF CLANS)
take my apps2SD
Delete any crap from my phone
Full Customization abilities
All this can be achieve by rooting but MY BOOTLOADER IS LOCKED.
There are numerous ways out there that just don't work.
Does anybody know how to first root my phone, and then to have access to a mod?
I want the mod to be able to do all the things I listed previously.
I know this is possible with CynogenMod on other phones, but my bootloader is locked, and I just don't know what to do. Done numerous tutorials, none seem to be working or some don't even have any download links.
If someone could give me a step by step guide on how to mod and root my phone that would be perfect.
I will respond very quick, and will ask you questions if I need help.
I will listen and try to follow your steps, but please give me specific details, I'm not a pro modder.
Thanks
unlock the bootloader from sonys site and then look on cms site for instructions, its noob friendly
