turning off lte - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

i know there isnt a toggle for turning of lte on the at&t variant but i thought there was some work arounds to this. can someone please post the steps to do this?

There's fairly simple instruction for this not only on xda, but on multiple other sites as well. Have you heard of Google?

In short - change APN settings.

actually theres a better way, if you're on CM10 or AOKP dial *#*#4636#*#* and choose WCDMA only or WCDMA Preferred. This will prevent the phone from trying to use LTE as its default network.

I thought that no matter what, for att users it always reverted back...
I tried going back to the wap.cingular apn but my phone would lose signal everynow and then..

It doesnt if you're on AOKP at least for my ATT it doesnt, if I set it to WCDMA preferred as it is by default I never see LTE, even with the PTA APN selected, and I know LTE is active in my area because on stock and CM10 I default to it and get upwards of 30-40 Mbps

See here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1826409

Theres also a way if you have root to create the new APN and have it stick (reason it doesnt stick is because PTA is set as default and because you cant change it reverts back to PTA). I'll give the steps I took to allow me to edit my PTA APN. again remember you need root. (also sqlite)
1. Using root explorer (or similar) navigate to /data/data/com.android.providers.telephony>databases>nwk_info.db
2. Tap on Carriers
3. Select line for AT&T PTA 310/410 scroll all the way to the right and under editable put a 1
4. Do the same for ATT Entitlement
5. Go to the PTA APN Menu>Settings>More Settings>Mobile Network> Access Point Names
6. In the PTA APN delete the values in the "APN type" field (this will prevent the phone from defaulting back to this APN)
7. Create new APN
Name

Only down side to this is that the phone will periodically drop ALL signal but then gains it back withing 15-20 seconds. I'm also still looking for a way to enable the "Network operators" selection through root explorer (I imagine it to be in a similar place as the APN settings). Any help from someone more knowledgeable than me is appreciated. Hope this helps. Also below is a link to where I posted working USSD (MMI) codes that I found. Maybe something can be discovered in those.

[Q] Galaxy Nexus i9250M Not working with Mobilicity

Hey I just picked up the GN i9250M (bell) and inserted my mobilicity sim but it says it cant connect to the network. Im assuming this is because I need to unlock the phone. Is that correct?
If that is correct to unlock the phone I need the SDK files and grabboot? can someone direct me to a tutorial on this?
What is the exact error message? You don't see any signal bars at all or is it just when you try to use data? The phone should be unlocked already. Most likely it's the data that can't connect, check your APN settings.
the error message was "cannot connect to the network at this time please try again later"
thanks for the quick response and sorry for wasting everyones time...not sure why this happened but once i walked into my house it connected..possibly just out of coverage area. up/down links seem to be working fine and calls can be made so im happy.
actually im having another issue now..dont know if i can ask it in this thread but whenever i try to download something frm the market i get a cannot download due to an error message...any ideas?
thanks again

Wifi or network? There are posts that say you should go to your APN settings and delete the proxy so that it's empty.
that was my first troubleshooting step but oddly enough the issue is only intermittent with wifi...some apps dl some dont, same issue now occur on network
hmm issue seems to be isolated to network connection now...what was the apn thing you mentioned?
can also confirm that connection is active and functional; browser and other apps working fine
In Settings -> click more under wireless & Networks -> Mobile Networks -> Access Point Names
You should see one or two APNs. click on them and make sure that Proxy is blank or "not set"
Bell runs an HSPDA network and Mobilicity runs an AWS network. You cant use the phone on Mobilicity's network.

Yes, you can use it. It will work fine. SGN is pentaband and unlocked. Just make sure your APNs are correct.
Sorry, I was going off the specs at GSMArena (which are wrong more often than right nowadays)

I just got the same exact phone.
Go remove the proxy address in the APN settings. and the reason it didn't connect at first because the phone was trying to "learn" how to connect to the Mobilicity. network.
I thought my phone was defective as well until I waited a bit after. It's a beautiful device

May be a long post!
I heard that port you can just leave Blank instead of 8080...speed increase so they say!
1. Set APNs>> posted by android01 (I have heard if you leave port blank you get faster speeds, just heard)
2. Go to setting and Disable Roaming as to not incure extra charges...
3. This is a somewhat of a Backdoor fix i found that worked with Samsung Vibrant from T-mobile... DISCLAIMER: USE AT OWN RISK! ONLY MODIFY THE SETTINGS LISTED.
IF the setting is not as listed, Read the setting heading click the matching section heading, to find the location of this setting scan and read all of the setting heading/titles.
If is works without a hitch than great....Let me know.
Again these directions i found on Howard Forumns and worked with a T-Mobile Galaxy S Vibrant
I had copied this into a Word document for my Mum as the phone was going to her:

It works!!! It totally works!!!! I love it! Thank you so much guys!!!! Now I don't have to restart my phone EVERY morning as soon as I pull out of the underground garage in my car!!!
Thank you, Thank you, THANK YOU!!!!!!
Dial: *#*#197328640#*#*
Click [1] debug screen
Click [8] phone control
Click [7] network control
Click [2] band selection
This is where you make a change, default setting is [1] automatic, which means it chooses automatically between gsm/cdma (Edge vs 3g). So we are going to change this and set it to wcdma band which is 3g.
Click [2] wcdma band
Click [1] wcdma all []
Now it should display “select wcdma all bands[*]"
Now on the bottom of your phone, click the menu key, it’s the one next to the home key, now click back, menu again one more time, back one more time, this is just to confirm it set to number 2 wcdma band.
Now click menu key one last time, click end.. and you are done. Now to double verify that the phone is locked into 3g, dial in: *#*#4636#*#*
Then click phone information Then scroll down to “set preferred network type” It should now have listed “wcdma only.” PS, if you tried to do a shortcut, and just set wcdma this way first without doing the lock above, it would just go back to gsm/cdma auto once you exit the screen.
Your phone should now be locked into 3g.
__________
Also what i do is Only click the 1700 and 2100 frequencies.Chose by hitting the menu button>>back and i forgot the option. it is "to add another band?" and so click either one frequency first, then menu>back>"add another band"!
This keeps me on 3G directly and always!!! DONT forget to turn Roaming off as to not incure unwanted charges.
Hope this helps and let it be known if it works for you nexus guys. or am i full of it and these are samsung commands....DOH! if they are.
the nexus from bell does not have phone lock..
i can use my fido sim in the phone..my nexus is from bell as well
Yep I have it with Mobilicity and it is an absolutely great phone granted some things are slower than they would be on 1 of the big 3 but it is more than adequate

If you have problems getting LTE with cm10.1 on SGS3 d2att

I've been trying to get LTE on my SGS3 on cm10.1 on for a long time without any luck. Hspa+ was the best I could get. Even when selecting LTE in network provider setting.
This morning I tried again without any success. For some reason I left it on LTE but abandoned my try. I was playing with the phone and went to phone info with *#*#4636#*#*. This is where I noticed that preferred network type was set to unknown and not flavor of lte. I've then forced lte there and magic I now have lte!
I think there may be a bug in cm when you select the preferred network type in network settings. For the phone it translate to unknown. When you force it in phone info (*#*#4636#*#*) it correct the problem.
Hope it will help others.

I was never able to get LTE on CM 10.1. 4G is all I'd get (4G is actually LTE). Usually I remove all APNs and enter only one with following settings:
Name: Rogers LTE
APN: ltemobile.apn
Proxy: Not set
Port: Not set
User Name: not set
Password: Not Set
Server: Not Set
MMSC: http://mms.gprs.rogers.com
MMS Proxy: 10.128.1.69
MMS Port: 80
MCC: 302
MNC: 720
Authentication Type Not Set
APN Type: internet + mms <---DO NOT ENTER THIS INFO - READ BELOW
APN Protocol: IPv4
Instead of internet + mms, enter "*" <--without the quotes.
When using an APN loading program, ther internet + MMS are options that come up in a menu. It seems that if you manually type them in like this, the modem doesn't like it. The asterisk does the trick.
Naturally I'm on Rogers so for AT&T and other carriers settings might be different.
Hope this helps.
SIDENOTE:
I'm on TW based ROM now and interestingly enough I never had issue with LTE so I never had to enter APN settings manually.

Ive been having the same problem the last two weeks and no one seems to be able to help me out. The best advice I can give is to change your APN to the lte one and its supposed to work from there, people usually have the most success doing that. But it didnt help me so any other advice would be greatly appreciated.
Last time I had that issue, I created a new ATT APN and changed to it. After a reboot, the phone changed from CDMA to the LTE preferred mode.
I can't tell you if that stuck though, because I flashed another ROM the next day and never saw the issue again.
Here are some APN's you can use. I used the last one:

This is my exact problem, I have hyperdrive which I love, but I have no LTE. I am having the same problem as OP and I have not been able to find a solution. Any help would be great!
Believe it or not, I somehow found a way to fix it for me. Now Ive literally tried everything I could find on the topic and nothing seemed to work. Kind of on a whim I decided to go to Network Operators in the settings and selected ATT, after that for some reason I was able to pick LTE/GSM/WCDMA. I disabled data, dialed *#*#4363#*#* and changed it to LTE/GSM/WCDMA and then made sure I had the right APN selected and re-enabled data, and next thing I knew 4G popped up! I hope this helps someone. I was infuriated for a few weeks without 4G and the fix was much simpler than what everyone kept telling me to do.

I'm having this issue in that I am only able to select the following two options, and have them stick;
GSM/WCDMA auto
GSM/WCDMA preferred (this option is currently selected).
If I try to select "LTE/GSM/WCDMA", it immediately goes back to GSM/WCDMA preferred.
I'm currently using StraightTalk on the AT&T network. I know the sim I have in the phone probably won't allow access to the LTE network (I want to get new sim cards to get LTE through StraightTalk), but I should be able to at least select that network option, and the LTE radio would scan, and find nothing.
I'm on the 9/13 nightly, stock kernel.

^^ That didn't work for me.
I previously had an Axon 7 that got stolen. I ordered another one on Swappa and can't for the life of me get it to connect to LTE on AT&T in Southern California (Los Angeles area) when my first one had no issues at all. I wonder if the sim card they gave me isn't an LTE card. It's really frustrating.

How to get 4G LTE working again after flashing to cm11 4.4.4

Hello!
I am new to the forums as far as posting goes but I am very familiar with XDA. Anywho, I've been struggling with my galaxy s3 for a few months now and finally figured out how to get the LTE option working again without flashing to a stock ROM, saving the settings and flashing a new zip. What was happening for me is I was able to get 2G/3G, hspa+, and Edge service but was never able to get LTE no matter what I did. Even when I was using cm11 4.4.2! The problem is with the APN profiles that are set.
Ok, so here are the instructions that have worked for me..
1) go to settings>mobile networks> Access Point Names
**you should see multiple settings to choose from**
2)Tap menu and reset to default.
** The options should now be blank**
3) Tap the "+" icon to set up a new APN profile and set the values accordingly.
Ignore the parentheses I used in the addresses. I am new so I cannot post "links" on this forum.
Name:*ATT HSPA+
APN:*phone

MCC: 310
MNC: 410
Authentication type:*<Leave in Blank>
APN type:*default,supl,mms,hipri
APN Protocol: Leave it to the Default one
Bearer: leave it to the Default one
4) Tap menu>save and set "ATT HSPA+" as the current profile.
5) Press back to return to Mobile Network Settings and select Network Operators.
6) the phone will scan for nearby provider and once it completes choose "ATT"
7) Navigate back to Mobile Network Settings and you should now be able to switch the Preferred Network Type to "LTE (recommended)"
After all of that, return to the home screen and reboot your device. You should now have 4G/LTE!
*Note: This has only been tested on the AT&T variant or the Samsung Galaxy S3 in the US, other carrier setting may differ*

Does anyone have a working Pixel 2 XL on Straight Talk - Verizon Sim?

UPDATE: Work around available using a att/tmobile compatible sim card, setting up the apn, then swapping back to straight talk verizon sim, apn settings are here to get LTE/MMS (no tether yet)
Is anyone successfully using Straight Talk Verizon Compatible Sim card with their Pixel 2 XL (Google Store purchased)?
Problem: Cannot get data on Straight Talk Verizon Sim (voice and text work fine).
Called straight talk, they wanted me to check my APN settings. However the phone will not allow me and says "Access Point Name settings are not available for this user". They said they don't see anything wrong on their end and it seems to be the phone.
Contacted Google, they said the carrier locks down the APN settings and theres nothing they can do to help, need to contact Straight Talk.
How does someone unlock the APN settings, did anyone else have success with ST/VZW Sims? Straight Talk's next idea is a new SIM (which would be sim #3 for this issue...so sounds like they dont know what to do)
I spent 2+ hours on the phone and talked to 5 people (3 calls) just to get my phone number back (first attempt got me a different phone number) and I'm lucky to be able to text and call again.
I too don't have data, but there was someone that suggested inserting a friends sim that lets them change APN and enter the changes, but swap out the sim to the ST one before saving.
Right now I'm trying to figure out why fastboot doesn't work to flash the VZ image. I suspect I need updated drivers.
this is a straight talk issue.. there is nothing else can do on this one.. check if you can ask another straight talk sim from either t-mobile or at&t if possible
i did the sim card swapping thing and got data, but only 3g. like others in the other thread said you cant type out all the setting correctly, particularly 'dun' in apn type.
once we get a stable root will this be just editable via direct entry to apn settings? this is going to be a nightmare flashing roms otherwise.
EDIT: got 4g finally. needed to use TRACFONE.VZWENTP as my APN, other APN lists have it as ACCT.TF.GW6.VZWENTP which gives 3g only. still no MMS yet though....
It's the future of android, unfortunately, in that it's an android 8.1 issue (at least Android 8.0 on 1st gen Pixel XL doesn't have this issue, but Android 8.1 on 1st gen Pixel XL does have this issue).
There is a new setting in the apns-conf.xml file (found in /system/system/etc or /system/etc), which setting is labeled "user_hidden" with options "true" and "false". All of the Verizon MVNO settings are labelled as "true", meaning that APN editing access is now restricted.
There is no way that I know of to edit this file without bootloader unlock and root.
And, it's definitely an Android issue, as Android 8.0 and earlier did not have this issue.
Speculation on my part, but this is probably Google's response to its exclusive carrier, Verizon, request that these phones not be made easy to use on much-cheaper-than-Verizon MVNOs.
I've got everything working including 50 mb down, 40 mb upload, but still can't send a picture via text. I'm using Katerina's settings (half-way down the page) here: https://productforums.google.com/fo...!msg/phone-by-google/_PGJbTEuY0M/BY724wAkBwAJ
I had a Project Fi sim I swapped in to allow adding an APN.

Now that a stable root is out, do you know how to set this via editing, i changed all the user_visible and user_editable settings in the apn-conf.xml file and still cant (i dont see a user_hidden)?
Would love to figure out a non-sim card swap method to do this so i can flash roms and whatnot without constantly swapping sims.

Once I get my replacement Pixel 2 XL (yes, bad blue to yellow to pinkish screen color shift depending on angle), I will be rooting.
The approach I will take will be to adb pull the apns-conf.xml file, edit it (see below), and replace. Possible edits include:
1. apns-conf.xml file from a Pixel XL (1st gen) running 8.0 or 7.1.2; or
2. Search the stock Pixel 2 XL's apns-conf.xml file for occurrences of Verizon, and replace the "true" in user_hidden with "false"
Hopefully, one of the above will work; if not, back to drawing board. I'm sure that there is a workaround, now that stable root exists.

I didnt find any user_hidden in the file on my Pixel 2 XL (Android 8.0, not 8.1)
there is user_visible= "false" on the verizon ones, but changing that to either true or removing it completely do not seem to change anything (even after reboots)
some others have user_editable="false" but not the verizon ones.
I'd upload it here but i hacked it way up and didnt make a backup...everything still seems to work though (using the sim swap trick right now)

I might have gotten dyslexic regarding the concepts; it could have been "user_visible" and "false" instead of "user_hidden" and "true" (it's been almost a week since I looked at this issue).
Glad to hear the workaround is working for you; I will post again on this after I have gotten my new replacement Pixel 2 XL (assuming a more palatable screen).
I was able to use ADB without the SIM in to add the ST APN. However, I get stuck with it not letting me add type "dun" to it. I have LTE working, but no MMS now.

Isn't that pretty much everyone's trouble now with Straight Talk on Verizon, no MMS?
same here, data working fine, no MMS. I was going to try the apn settings i found here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=73392938&postcount=29

I currently do not have 'mms' set in APN type. And it won't let me set 'dun'. also my Mobile Virtual network operator value is set to DEFF and wont let me change it. So I was hoping to try MMS (but im at work and didnt bring my other sim and sim tool).
Was hoping to manually set it now that im rooted, but i cant figure out how to do that...google and xda searches found lots of old guides from 2014 that don't seem to apply anymore.

This is true. I'm gonna end up having to be on the phone with them. Which I absolutely dread.

I have the same issue with the DUN type as well. I'm gonna try the workaround to it by using a GMS SIM that will allow that type, then putting mine back in. If it works I'll comment later.

A buddy at work heard last Friday that I was going switch to Straight Talk and decided to do the same with his iPhone 7's (last years model). Found out yesterday he spent 2 hours on the phone with them to upgrade as well. So it's not just us early Pixel adopters.
At least everything is working for them.
has anyone tried flashing the verizon emr nov update to see if this helps? i wish google would comment on this issue, its consistently in the top threads on their product forums, but no word from them.
I considered it, but fastboot doesn't work well for me with this phone. Took about 10 tries to unlock the bootloader and tried to run flash-all, but it just hangs. I have the latest Google drivers and latest platform tools.
Tried a different usb port and it worked. = /
FYI. Wiped my phone to install November update and my ACN is gone and no longer have data.
I got mms and LTE finally!!!:
used these exact settings with the sim card swap trick

I forced those with ADB (With the SIM out to get all the fields) but never got MMS even using the MMS type. I'm gonna try the SIM trick tomorrow though.
EDIT: Okay, I got it. I don't know why, but it didn't work the last time I tried it.
If you take the sim card out, in ADB you can run
Code:
adb shell am start -a android.intent.action.INSERT content://telephony/carriers --ei simId -1
This forces the new APN screen to come up.
I then used
Name: straight talk
APN: TRACFONE.VZWENTP
Proxy: Not set
Port: Not set
Username: Not set
Password: Not set
Server: Not set
MMSC: http : //mms.vtext.com/servlets/mms < remove spaces after http

Bearer: Unspecified
Mobile virtual network operator type: None
Mobile virtual network operator value: Not Set
and it is working fine after I put my SIM back in.
