MMS with auto split "by word" for official Sprint 4.1.1? - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

So, I've noticed the new Jelly Bean update does not auto split SMS. It just stops at exactly 160 characters forcing you to send, then start at your next character in a new message even if it's the middle of a word. I was wondering if someone would be willing to mod the MMS.apk to "auto" split and do it "by word", and if they could possibly do an odexed and deodexed version for people both on the stock tar and those on custom Roms.
Would anyone be willing to try this? I might play around with it myself, but all my attempts on previous Jelly Bean Roms ends in MMS.apk force closing.
Thanks in advance.

Aren't there already mms's that do this? Or at least split at 160.

Based on 4.0.4, yes, or themed. I'm looking for one based off of the official update, so SMS and MMS previews work, and I'm not looking to have it themed. I literally just want stock with the mentioned functionality.

No, the one from CM10 force closes on stock Roms, and I want it to be based off of "this" build, the stock build. I do not like Frankenstein mods. I prefer everything to be built off of the same build.

FWIW, I've tried compiling the Mms app with different variables and it either continues to convert to mms or fails. Some googling is showing sprints phones might not have allowed for lengthy split sms txts or Multipart sms in a few years too so I'm even wondering if it is something that is supported by the carrier.

Take the MMS from CNA you'll have that hadecent pop up and it auto starts on the next SMS and splits it automagically.

Uh, it doesn't convert to MMS though. It just stops dead at 160 characters forcing you to stop, send, and continue at your next character even if you're in he middle of a word. It's hassling to have to stop and send and continue on where you left off, possibly halfway through a word. Makes no sense not to just auto split by word. It's clean and simple. Hell, I'd rather it convert to MMS than to just stop letting me type if I reach 160.

I'll look into that, but I don't want message popups, prefer just the stock functionality with nothing else added or changed, and don't want Frankenstein mods as I mentioned before. Maybe it's my OCD, but I can't use a system app built off of build X using build Y. Also, I'm on stock, as in the tar. I'd prefer to not even have deodexed system apps. I do notice a difference of smoothness between odexed and deodexed system and framework. Thank you for trying to help, though.

I'm compiling straight off AOSP right now with CyanogenMod's Mms package in place of the AOSP one. If it works a-ok I'll send you a copy of it if you'd like.

Its fine its an option you can choose to enable/disable at your leisure.

I will definitely look into it, but if someone finds info on how to properly mod the stock apk to auto split by word, and possibly convert to MMS after 3 sets of 160, please let me know and I'll attempt it myself.

Eh, its working fine with splitting but now it won't auto convert to Mms after x number of messages. The setting is not even there so I'm thinking it hasn't been added yet. Split messaging was only added in July.

totally - It's actually pretty nice. You can turn off the pop-up and then access it directly from the notification menu. Works really well.
I'm pulling the kernel off the stock ota, recompile with it included, and then send you a link if you want to check out. I know there is a kernel floating around but I bad habit of needing to get it directly from the source when I can.. It is non-rooted,and odexed.

Sounds good. Thank you.

[REQ]AOSP Messaging apk

I change themes quite often, but only one theme that I've come across for the Samsung Epic that uses AOSP messaging as opposed the the default "Samsung messaging" (I guess you could call it), is Engraved Blues. I've used that theme for the longest, mostly because it has AOSP messaging. It comes with WAY more user functionality than the limited "Samsung Messaging." Is there anyone that could put AOSP Messaging into a flashable zip? That way, I can use whatever theme I chose, and still have AOSP Messaging. I would really appreciate it if this could be done!
I'd even be willing to learn how to do it. I usually don't request, and tinker with things on my own, but I'd need some help with this one. If someone wants to walk me through the process, I'd be even more appreciative, because I wouldn't have to ask for these kinds of things!
I don't know what you mean by AOSP messaging but Impaler's transparent MMS are flashable zips. They both look and run very well. Give one of them a try. Just download and flash in CWM.

AOSP messaging is I guess stock Android messaging. At least that's what someone told me a while back. There are noticeable differences. Probably one of the most important is the fact that with default Sammy messaging, when messages come in while I'm roaming, they are 4 hours in advance. For some reason, this isn't the case with AOSP messaging. It's really weird. There are also options for vibration types, and you're also able to change the font size of the messages. None of these options are present in Sammy messaging, AND, there are no chat balloons; just color backgrounds.
The MOST important reason I prefer AOSP is because for whatever reason, I cannot pinpoint, whenever I run a ROM with Samsung's messaging app, the phone tends to randomly restart. Ever since I've been using Engraved Blues with AOSP messaging, the random restarts are nonexistent. No reboots whatsoever! My phone has been super stable with SRF 1.1.1 and Engraved Blues. I don't know why it causes those reboots, and I don't have my messaging set to keep a lot of messages. Maybe 50 at the most.
Impaler's transparent messaging is based off of Samsung's Android messaging app and while it looks awesomely sweet, I've had the same unfortunate reboots as it seems to be based off of Sammy messaging.
EDIT: Ok, just noticed this in his thread.
These apps are the 2.2 MMS app, only about 50 times better than Samsung could have ever made it...

I haven't really had any problems with what you mentioned. I would say give it a try. I think you will be pretty happy. His messaging app is always the first mod I flash after flashing a new ROM or theme. If it doesn't work for you, sorry.
I have that same problem with Swype where when I'm roaming all my messages read 4 hours ahead of time. Gets really bothersome. I can't live without swype anymore though.

Funny thing is that before I installed the Engraved Blues theme, I thought that the Samsung messaging app was standard Android. If I hadn't come across the theme, I wouldn't have known a thing about AOSP messaging. And what's with that roaming problem? Man, that's so annoying! How'd Samsung let that one out of the gate with that glaring problem???

From what I was told/read it is a Sprint problem with how their devices communicate with the towers used for roaming. So blame Sprint for the problem

All you have to do is go into that zip, take out the mms.apk, and push it to system/app using root explorer.. I've got a video showing how to do that

Ongoing annoying issue MMS ics mms

An Ongoing issue that is driving me insane
When i use cm9 or aokp any ics rom that has the aosp ics mms.apk or even if i download it from the play store when i attach a picture it turns it horizontal.
If i am on stock ics from t-mobile its fine
i have confirmed with 3 people that are on cm9 as well and their pictures stay vertical when attaching pictures.
I cannot for the life of me figure out why mine are turning horizontal anyone have any thing they can suggest PLEASE
i believe that's the stock behavior for the aosp MMS. My Nexus S with stock ICS does the same thing. It's not something you can change in a setting or at least i am not aware of it.

[Q] Problem with SMS over 160 characters & LiquidSmooth JellyBean 4.2.1 ROM

I am new to the android scene. I've had an iPhone since the 3GS and they have all been jailbroken and unlocked. I got tired of the lack of innovation with iOS and the iPhone in general and decided to make the switch to android.
I bought a Sprint Galaxy S3 last week. The size took a little getting used to, but I liked the way the operating system looked. I liked the fact that there was no sync software (like iTunes) required to copy media to the device. I liked a lot of things about the phone when it was stock, but once I decided to root my device and install the LiquidSmooth JellyBean 4.2.1 Beta 2 ROM, I fell in love.
I am having ONE issue though. I cannot seem to send a text message that is longer than 160 characters. It just shows it as "Sending..." for a few minutes then fails. I can send text messages fine if they are under 160 characters. I can receive long text messages over 160 characters but they are split up into two separate texts (it did the same thing on the stock OS so I'm guessing that is just how it works with android messaging). I can make and receive calls just fine, but I cannot send a damn text over 160 characters and it is frustrating, especially if I forget and accidentally send one and then have to wait for it to time out before I can send a shorter one.
I tried posting in the developer thread but I do not have 10 posts yet so I figured it couldn't hurt to start a thread in the main Sprint Galaxy S3 forum and see if I can get lucky and get any replies.
Model: SPH-L710
Android version: 4.2.1
Baseband: L710VPBJ7
Kernel version: 3.0.57-leanKernel-spr_aosp_jb42-2.0-+ [email protected] #69
LiquidSmooth version: Liquid-JB-v2.1-Beta2
Build number: liquid_d2spr-userdebug 4.2.1 JOP40D
I'm a new android user but I am no stranger to computers or technology in general. Any help would be greatly appreciated and if I need to provide anymore information let me know.
It has to do with sprints CDMA network and some closed source aspects and is generally an issue on all AOSP ROMs. But in your messaging app, open settings. There should be a setting for auto split 160 chars. Enable it.
If that setting isn't there, many people use go SMS from the android market. In fact, it has a ton of options and many people prefer it to the stock messaging app.
Oh, and welcome to android.

Thanks, trying this now. Cross your fingers for me
Just wanna say thanks to everyone who offered advice and support.
After flashing that zip it works lovely It automatically splits my texts and I no longer have an issue.
The only other minor problem I am having is my headset, the button to mute my voice, pause/play my music and fast forward/rewind no longer works. Anyone find a way to make this work? Like I said it's not a HUGE deal, but it is nice being able to stop my music when I need to hear someone by pressing the button on my headphones.
Thanks again!

Trans AOSP MMS App

This is based off iNate71's Mms at Rootzwiki. It has Quick Message, new message popup window and emoji support. I just redid them to be transparent and black. I also edited all the hard coded colors in layout.xmls and moved them to colors.xml for easy changing.
I couldn't take the white in the default app anymore. This will only look good with a dark wallpaper.
You'll need a root file explorer..I prefer root explorer from the market.
First rename Unimessagebin.apk to apk.bak and then do the same with Unimessagebin.odex.
Now that you have
Unimessagebin.apk.bak and
Unimessagebin.odex.bak
Copy over this Mms-trans.apk or Mms-black.apk and set the correct permissions then reboot.
Viola you now have a transparent or black AOSP MMS app..
saved..downlaod link added
Nice it does look alot better

so far i find it pretty gorgeous. if u say everything works then i think i just found my text app that i'm gonna be using for the foreseeable future (at least till we can get this bootloader unlocked and see what kinda roms we can get going...even then might sub your's in still haha) i like the icon u used, instead of the flat blue one, kind of a glass look to it, and i like the smiley's it uses (the round ones instead of the droid head ones for my friends that dont have emojis) i appreciate the effort greatly...my only real gripe left with the phone so far is no good ir remote apps...if only logitech would let u put their harmony software on ur phone without their adapters and use it with the IR instead of doing it over bluetooth/wifi to an expensive adapter...quickremote doesnt have as much functionality as i would like (like my harmony but always having to charge it haha)
I don't think MMS works..I can receive fine but mine crashes when trying to send a MMS..

I did find a topic on how to get aosp MMS working on the s4 and there is a chance the method will work for us also but I haven't had time to update.

Do you want working group text in a TW rom, like i do?

I want group text to work on my TW Rom, I came from a HTC HD2, and HTC Sensation with CM10.1 with 4.2.1...SO i am familiar with AOSP roms. I like TW, i like what Sammy did to 4.1.2.
I am sure i am NOT the only one that wants group text to work like in the new SG S4. Since i have a S4 and a Note 2 in the house. I noticed my wife's device can group text all day long and its on TW 4.2.2. I actually like the features in my TW 4.1.2 with the exception of missing group text sending and recieving. I did the Clockwork Mod 10.1, i did the 4.2.2 roms, i did cleanrom, liquid smooth, jedi master, jedi x, pacman...i kept going back to jedi master....UNTIL now, I finally found a rom that has working group text
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2242972&highlight=guide
Tweaked 2.3 Rom has group text working and has mods like the rom i came from Jedi Mazster 14, it has wifi calling and a bunch of other tweaks like everyone else.
My note 2 is finally complete. Life is good!
I am running Saber Kernal 32.2 and here's a quickie of up time
Just wanted to share..:laugh::laugh::laugh:
I am on Jedi Master 14 now. What you stated is very convincing. I might switch. A few questions:
1) Does Bluetooth tethering work?
2) Does MMS show up as a picture or a slideshow?
3) Does this rom have the built in spell checker (red lines underneath misspelled words)?
Overall, how is this rom compares to JDM 14?
I just want to ability to have group text and it seems like default 4.2.2 has this inbuilt hence S4 and other phone with 4.2.2 has it on them as well

pull down custom color
clock on left side in custom colors
circle battery in custom colors
my #1 favorite HIDE THE STUPID BLOCKING ICON!!!!
i have yet to loose my multi window tab, JM14 it would disappear
changing stuff out, with JM14 you have to reflash the rom, with tweaked, all you do is flash the modificationator and you have three choices: add, remove and do nothing!
you got super duper loud sound hack with a button press from your in call screen
custom carrier labels
a dev that is there often
thats just stuff i noticed. you also cant do this with Jedi M14 or X15

Have you tried/considered the groupme app? It's pretty useful for texting large groups, since any phone with sms can take advantage of it.

Well it's not a themed MMS it's the actual S4 MMS so it should have worked. Guess it didn't if you say it didn't so I retract my statement. Guess I should look into what else is needed. I have an idea though. Either way tweaked is a beast, was running it earlier today to check out Alexia's theme

bro, i tried your rom in my quest for working group mms send and recieve. i would flash 2-3 times a day before noon and then restore Jedi Master 14 for the rest of the day. How is Alexias theme? any screen shot teasers? i must admit, tweaked does have some good stuff in it.

Hmmm, oh well I didn't even think about group mms until reading this. I think I know what mod I need to do since I'm pretty sure the mms app is good now.
Her theme is sick. Is going to be one of the most popular themes here. Sorry no screen shots I'm back on my project working on some things

Best post ever. I agree 100%!!!! The "Tweaked" ROM by Dwitherell actually feels, dare I say, like a commercial product! Like, a Google-approved phone and ROM! Yup.....THAT good, folks.
That good.
Enough said!

Group text
I have searched and searched and this seems to be the closest on topic thread.
I just got my hands on the Gs4 (wife still has the gs3). We are with Us cellular and can't group text. (thinking about switching carries just for that reason.)
We can send out a group text but when we get replies they come in as a single thread. Others can't see the group thread.
Anyway to get this working on the gs4? everyone one at work uses this feature to communicate with the iphones (Yes the are trying to convert me.)
I'd love if Android would allow a reply or replay all button and see who it was sent to.
any ideas?

SGS4 has group messaging since it is jelly bean 4.2.2 your SG3 does not since it is NOT 4.2.2 like my note two its only up to 4.1.2 that natively does not have group text
open messaging app>settings>click on group messaging
hint, when you OPEN your messaging app scroll down till you see settings

Hi gshadow325,
I just tried this rom per your recommendation. One downside that I noticed on this Rom/AOSP Messaging app is MMS cannot be sent through wifi calling?? Could you confirm you have the same issue ? I am on Tweaked 2.5 I am glad I can do group texts now but its kinda annoying that basic MMS cannot be sent through wifi.
I was on Jedi Master 18 and I did not have this issue. MMS pictures sent through Wifi calling worked just fine.
I am using the s4 mms app. I did get mms to work via wifi. I only had wifi when I was on my cruise in August

Hey -
Were you using AOSP Mms on Jedi that allowed for sending mms through wifi calling? I was under the impression that this was an unsupported feature for AOSP Mms - so I would be very interested to know as to whether it was a themed SecMms sort of thing that was being used, or if it was an AOSP Mms being used for this. I agree that it's annoying it doesn't work w/ it
