I've searched for an answer for this on google and on here, but can't find one anywhere. apologies if I'm being dim.
I've just bought an unlocked Galaxy nexus of ebay (I9250) and I've put my o2 uk sim into it. I only bought it so I could get my hands on jellybean.
Is it actually available for this handset in the uk ota or otherwise (without rooting)
thanks
currently running 4.0.4
depends on the firmware you are on.
what does the build number say in the about phone section under settings?

yakjuxw is the version you have and i'm pretty sure JB is not out for that version.
the best way to get jellybean on your device is to convert to stock yakju. here is a great guide to converting to yakju: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1626895

Thanks for the fast reply. I got a nexus because I wanted jellybean without any hassle. This method looks pretty intense.
Was there a way to tell if my device would have an update available before I bought it?
what's the difference between yakjuxw & yakju? is it a regional thing?
if i do convert to yakju, will it be like my handset was always yakju (if you get me?)
EDIT: I think i meant is yakju an official google rom

its a very simple process. if you follow the steps as they are and do not skip anything, you will be fine and if you happen to run into any problems, me or efrant can help you if you post in the thread
the difference is regional and yakju is updated directly from google. anything other than yakju, takju (US play store version) and mysid (verizon variant) is updated by samsung
if you convert to yakju, you will notice no difference. the GSM version's hardware is the same across all variants.
So if i do this process, will it just be like I have a "pure" nexus, and i will receive any future ota updates?
also, do i need to root or anything?
I'm stressing a bit because that is what I thought I was getting

you will have a pure nexus and will updates as soon as they are available directly from google
the only thing you will be doing is unlocking the bootloader. this is not the same as rooting, and you can always relock the bootloader for a pure stock look, although having it unlocked does nothing really.
just follow the steps and you will be fine.
sorry for bombarding you with questions.
Does it make a difference if I go for the 4.0.4 (IMM76I) 4.1.1 (JRO03C)?
I'm assuming I'd just want to go straight to 4.1.1

yes there should be 6.
for all the fastboot commands, you will enter them in terminal and instead of just fastboot, you'll need to start the commands with ./
so it'd be like: ./fastboot flash system system.img

if i want to return the phone (to claim on the warranty etc) would i just have to lock the boot loader?

yes, and you can do that now if you really want (i dont recommend it unless you really are going to stay 100% stock all the time). the command is: ./fastboot oem lock

Last question...(probably)
is it likely that the retailer i bought the device from will be able to tell that i installed a new version of the operating system?
I have been having problems with the phone restarting itself randomly. I have read that this is quite a common problem and the hardware most likely needs replacing. but dont want them to think it was me tinkering that has caused this (they specifically asked if id tried to install a custom os)
cheers
yakjuxw JRO03C from IMM76K update is now available.

So I just got my Galaxy Nexus yesterday. I was doing a bit of looking around and found that the latest OTA update for the yakjuzs build was actually 4.0.2 and I'm stuck on 4.0.1. I tried several times to update, taking the sim out for wifi only each time. I'm in the US on AT&T and this is an Asian build on the unlocked GSM version but if it's through wifi I wouldn't think that would make a difference.
I don't want to flash my phone as I really got tired of that with my Galaxy S and I never learned ADB but if it's needed to get updates legitimately I wouldn't mind learning. So that said, is it necessary to flash via ADB and fastboot to the yakju build or is this update just going to mysteriously pop up unexpected-like?
I had the same problem. and turned it into yakju. and immediately received with 4.0.2
I would suggest flashing to yakju build and flash the Google 4.0.2 image. It does not take long.

It doesn't matter who updates your phone.
Not everyone gets the update at the same time. Someone can flash yakju and get the update immediately, and someone else can flash yakju and not get the update for another month. It's all luck. Updates are rolled out in batches. My friend on stock yakju just got the volume bug fix a week ago.
I'm not too concerned about having to wait so much as not knowing whether the update will even be pushed at all to my phone. It's an unlocked, gsm version with an asian build on AT&T. Besides that, from what I've read there's more to it besides just using odin with the phone in download mode. Has anyone seen a good tutorial that really details the process step by step? I looked but didn't seem to find much as most assume a working knowledge of adb which i lack.

I had mostly chalked it up to my experience with the galaxy s which not once received an update and the one time it did was because i hacked the registry. Then the phone boot looped and i had to flash with odin.

I've been an Android user for a while (Nexus One, and now Galaxy Nexus), but am quite tired of Samsung's tyrannical rule over that little version number in "About Phone".
So, I've got my Samsung Galaxy Nexus (on 4.0.1, ERGH!), and I'm on Bell Canada (Alberta, specifically), and I don't believe I have LTE capability (I do have HSPA+...). As for computer, I run Windows 7 x64.
On that note, I'd like to unlock the BootLoader and flash 4.0.4 (no root, if possible), or at least be able to receive updates directly from Google.
These are the questions (and confirmations) I have, as I haven't been able to find any FAQ or thread that covers them...
1. Is this the ROM I should be downloading?
2. Is this the tool I should be using to unlock the BootLoader safely and properly?
3. Is a relocked BootLoader traceable by the carrier/manufacturer, in the event that I need to return it?
4. What is the best way to back up all of the App data on my phone? (High scores, calendar settings, user/password combinations, etc.) Or is this even possible? (I think things like contacts, phone settings, calendar events, and Apps will sync from the cloud... right?)
Any help is appreciated... I'm a bit of a tech geek but I've never even tampered with a phone before, so this is all new to me. Thanks to anyone brave enough to help me! ^^
PS: Sorry if this is in the wrong section; this was the most fitting, I thought.
I used that toolkit and that update and I can confirm that they both work
That is NOT the ROM for you, you have a GSM device. H+ is not LTE.
The GSM and CDMA devices are markedly different.
Try to read in this thread... as well as efrant posts, you will get your answer !
N.B. most important thing is read and read and read... before doing anything..

There is no 4.0.4 source. There is a rumored leak of the 4.0.4 LTE version (no idea of the condition of the version), but the only source that is available is 4.0.3 (it's in the AOSP). The latest version on any GN is 4.0.2 (GSM or LTE/CDMA).
It's kind of disappointing to see the GN taking so long to update, but the Nexus S is apparently taking ages to get onto ICS. I doubt we get another update until the Nexus S gets 100% updated to ICS.

True, true. But warranty is through Vodafone where I got it from and it'll be void if I reflash it. I already sent it twice back. First time it had the motherboard replaced because of a boot loop and now it's there for unexplained battery drain, 40% overnight with everything but the phone disabled.
I just got a yakjuxw nexus yesterday, and immediately fastboot flashed to yakju, 4.0.4. First time, it boot looped, but a second attempt went just fine. I figured this was the easiest way to make sure I got updates from Google in a timely manner.
Method for quicker OTA update
I got the update OTA (UK).
I used this method to get it quicker. Took about 6 attempts, but i didn't bother rebooting.
Should work, some redditors said it took anywhere from 2-20 attempts :/

My phone is an unlocked European model, but I'm in the US on AT&T. Note that I converted my yakjuxw build to the plain Google yakju. I'm not even sure why anyone wouldn't do this (aside from being afraid of bricking your phone )-- it wasn't that difficult to do using the Gnex toolkit offered in the development section here.
The worst part for me was getting my Win7 64 bit PC to recognize my phone in fastboot mode and actually install the driver. Once I did that, I was good to go (ok, maybe except the boot loop, but I've flashed the hell out of a Viewsonic G-Tablet before, so boot looping wasn't anything I haven't seen already).

Just to clarify: there are no yakju devices or takju devices or yakjuxw devices, etc. There are maguro devices and there are toro devices. yakju/takju/yakjuux/etc are made to run on maguro devices, so they are interchangeable. mysid is made to run on toro.

But go ahead, nothing bad is going to happen. Flash it just the same as you would yakju builds.

Ok, complete build/flash/rom newbie here...
I'm in USA/T-mobile on a stock GNex, yakju build, 4.0.2... been waiting patiently for the OTA as again, complete newbie to all this stuff, figured I'd wait for the OTA rather than trying all this fancy shmancy stuff.
But let's say I were to flash a 4.0.4 build; do I still get future OTA's? Or do I have to continue to manually install all future updates?
Going from 4.0.2 to 4.0.4... I know there was a minor update for antennae issues a few days ago/last week... do I need to increment or can I jump straight into the latest? Also, does it matter from 4.0.2 to the yakju or takju 4.0.4?
Basically if I decide to try this, most likely this weekend, I want to make sure I'm 100% completely up to date.
Last question, how long approx. does it take to do all this for a complete newb?

If you flash the stock images from google you will get updates. It isn't very hard but it does require you have the sdk and fastboot set up. keep in mind that flashing those images will wipe out your entire phone.

It doesn't require the SDK. Just Fastboot and ADB.
He doesn't have to wipe his phone if he just applies the updates only, not flashing the complete images (he's already on yakju).
well yeah. i just figured that in order to have fastboot he would need the sdk set up or atleast partially set up.
and oh i thought google wasn't providing update images anymore. just the full system images. i may be wrong however.

Hello,
I haven't got jellybean OTA yet, my version when i booted it first time was chinese and the box IIRC it had google.com.hk/nexus
I'm traveling day after tomorrow and I REALLY wish to use the new navigation, maps, cards and all other nice stuff
any workaround to flash jellybean officially or so?
I did almost all clearing cache tricks and no update came yet...
Thanks
I've found https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images how to know my device is takju or yakju to download the proper image and flash my device?
and any difference between flashing or waiting for OTA other than losing every single bit on data on the device?

try this not sure if will work, but read the thread a bit.
edit: I should have read a bit " You can easily convert ANY GSM/HSPA (i.e., maguro) device to stock yakju (or takju) from any non-yakju build (yakjuxw, yakjuxs, yakjuux, yakjusc, yakjuzs, yakjudv, yakjukr, yakjujp, yakjuxe, etc.). " lol

Yakju or takju, it doesn't matter.
No difference between full images and ota (other than data loss).

You're not takju or yakju. Doesn't matter what you have now, you can flash to takju. It'll wipe everything and you'll get up-to-date OTAs from here on out.

Yes, that URL works. That's the preferred guide to follow. It's all there.
