im trying to root my phone but i dont know if those methods out there would work to root my s3 running the latest firmware...
any help will be appreciate it! Thanks!
Use the no trip the flash counter method in the stickies in the development section
But, you could use the other methods and use the triangle away app to reset the counter

thanks i was kinda confused about using the fisrt method that came out...
Yeah I believe the no trip Odin method is the best because you can flash that ROM through Odin . Then download ROM manager and flash recovery through the app. Then put your favorite ROM you want to flash on your internal SD card. Boot into recovery flash reboot done! Cheers!

I just got my S3 on the 1st. I've been looking here through the forums and found two different root methods: one being flashing a recovery through Odin, the other being the S3 Snapdragon toolkit, which will root and install a custom recovery as well. Do they both increase the binary count? I want to avoid that as much as possible. Although I know Chainfire's Triangle Away app will reset the counter. I came from the Epic 4G Touch, in which I used an Odin One click to root and sfhub's autoroot package to flash a custom recovery, so it was very simple. The toolkit seems like it would be the easiest, but will it work with the latest update to LI3?

Flashing a custom recovery or kernel will increase the count so yes, THEY WILL BOTH INCREASE IT. You need to flash a pre-rooted system in odin to leave it untouched. I see the link is down tho. give me a few mins and ill link u to a mirror of the pre-rooted system

I thought only flashing a custom recovery or kernel through Odin would increase it, not through other sources? Is it different on the S3?

Thats right. flashing a kernel or recovery through odin will increase it.The toolkit method will too because it uses odin to do it. All the toolkit is is a noob friendly/do everything for you type of deal. A pre-rooted system wont touch the counter period. Heres the link: https://rapidshare.com/files/1336263942/root66_SPR_L710VPALEN.7z Theres the stock image already rooted. Counter stays untouched

I may just stick with the toolkit itself for now. No data will be lost, it can do everything in one click, and I should be able to use the Triangle Away app to reset the flash counter. Do you know if the toolkit works with LI3?

Looks like that link is down. I just got my S3 yesterday, used Odin and then 'No triangle' app to reset flash counter.
Hello, I just received my Galaxy S3, I came from the S2. I'm seeing multiple ways to root/new recovery this device, From your general experience with this device what is the safest way? I do not want to trip the flash counter. Thanks!
-John
Probably easiest way to do this is to Odin a stock image with root already injected.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1739426
The link above will provide this. As always be sure to read and understand before going ahead, it is important to download the proper image for your model and carrier. After a successful flash, you may encounter a Bootloop . If this happens boot into recovery and do a factory reset, reboot and enjoy your newly rooted phone.

Thanks!
Also keep in mind, especially with stock Jellybean, that installing and booting into any custom recovery, like CWM or TWRP, will trip the flash counter.

Just get triangle away app if you trip the counter. works great
there's a thread in android development about rooting
but tbh though, S3 is one of the easiest device to root since we don't need to unlock bootloader, etc...and rooting s3 is fast too
Hi,
I bought a Galaxy S3 T999L from craigslist and wanted to unlock it to send it overseas. My sister had a T-Mobile account so I had her contact the representative and request it. They said it would happen within 24 hours. Anyway, since I didn't have much time, I rooted it using "Method 1 - The Root66 Way" through Odin in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2370981
Today, T-Mobile gave me an unlock code but when I used it, it didn't work. My guess is that it's because the phone is rooted. Is there a way to go back to it being unrooted so I can use the unlock code?
Thanks in advance
Open SuperSU app and select full unroot. Though I doubt its whats keeping you from getting unlocked. Worth a try though.

Hey Doc,
Thanks for all the guides etc. I was able to fully unroot it but when I try to look for updates, it says that phone has been modified... how does one fix that?
If its stock, factory reset.
Or Odin flash the firmware.

Also, is there a way to reset the binary flash counter AFTER the unrooting?
and is there a way to root it again after it has been unrooted?
much thanks and appreciation

No you must be rooted to use Triangle Away.
Yes there are several options to root and you can just reroot using any one. Shouldn't be any need to wipe anything if you want to use root66 again.

Either Triangle away is not working properly or I'm doing something wrong but I used your 1st method to revert back and unroot using the stock and root file, kernel and recovery files through Odin and used Triangle away at the end. It stated that counter is 0, then I unrooted from SU app and restarted but the counter read 1 after restart.
I'm not sure what's going on.
Make sure you are flashing the stock SECURE Kernel and stock recovery, then TA. Then unroot.
And you may actually want to try running triangle away, reboot download, then if the counter is zero, Odin flash the official firmware.

ok so this time I re-rooted using recovery method and then UNrooted using the recovery method listed by you.
Reboot into CWM or TWRP Recovery
Flash PureStock Rom
Flash the unmodified, Secure UVAMB7 Kernel
Flash Stock UVAMB7 Recovery
Next, if you want to wipe everything but your internal SD Card, Factory Reset before rebooting.
If you want a 100% clean, out of the box type device, reboot Recovery.
This should take you into the stock recovery you just flashed. Now Factory Reset.
Reboot Phone
(Last chance to run Triangle Away!)
Open SuperUser/SuperSU (app)
Find and select the option to Permanantly Unroot.
Reboot
Done!!!

After using TA to reset counter and after unrooting by SU, i restarted and then checked binary counter in downloading mode and it read 1... why is that? so frustrating....
the reason I want to do this is because I have an unlock code but it won't work... there's no other explanation as to why the unlock code from TMOBILE wouldn't work other than this counter issue...
It could be the wrong unlock code. Ive heard of more than a few people having to call back a few times. I was able to unlock with a count of about 8 or so. Granted I wasnt using a code, but I dont see this as being the cause. But to be sure, try this:
Triangle Away. (Close/reopen the apo to make sure it worked) then pull the battery. Reboot directly to download mode. Make sure the counter is 0. Flash the official firmware released yesterday.
No idea why its not working for you. Ive had several confirmations that it did work before. Keep in mind that if you have a custom recovery or kernel, every time you boot up the phone it will retrip the counter to 1. So be careful your not booting up w/ cwm or twrp installed.

Nah, just open up Odin, connect your phone to your computer, download CWM, PHILZ or TWRP tar file, click on PDA, choose the tar recovery file you just downloaded, and flash it. That's all. Very simple. Then you can go into recovery and flash custom roms.

First, calm down, I can read. Second, you are solely responsible for your own device. Third, Saferoot is only for root, it has absolutely nothing to do with recovery. Flashing a recovery through Odin will allow you to flash custom roms, which is what you asked how to do. No need for Safestrap.

I've been searching and reading for last couple days and haven't been able to find a definite answer. I'm using note 2 i317 at&t with stock 4.3 out of the box. I've been able to root it and get past Knox successfully. My question is can I install a custom recovery using stock 4.3? I'm wanting to use xposed framework and I want to be able to make a backup and have recovery optons. I've heard it may not be possible on 4.3 due to possible locked bootloader and the Knox thing. Any help is appreciated.
Just flash your custom recovery using Odin...
The Knox bootloader is generation #1...and does not prevent the flashing of custom recoveries or kernel images. .
Edit:...custom recoveries will trip the Knox counter...and void the device warranty. ..
Once you have a custom recovery. ..you can create your full nandroid backup...
Then you'll be able to do anything you want with roms etc....g

Not exactly. ..
Once you root...or flash a custom recovery. ..you will trip the Knox counter...(bootloader flag)
Effectively. ..that will void warranty...
However. ..This flag will not effect using your nandroid backup to restore the device if you should need it... (store that backup on your PC for safety)...
But if you don't care about warranty. ..then a revert to stock 4.3 is quite easy...minus the tripped bootloader flag....g

when i turn on root explorer in ES file manager - i get test failed. feature can not run on my device. any help?
Dont you need to change to read/write?
I have one more question on the 4.3 boot loader thing. Am I able to flash Roms that are based on an earlier android version like 4.2.2 since I am on official 4.3 boot loader? I was looking at flashing a ported miui v5 ROM but I'm pretty sure its 4.2 based.

Sry if I seem like I'm thread jacking but just wanted to clarify something. So with the AT&T note 2 on the stock ota 4.3 we can still install a custom recovery and flash custom roms and kernels or does it have to be 4.3 touchwiz based roms? If so can someone tell me the steps to do so?
The only reason I'm asking is I have both an att not 2 and a Verizon both on 4.3 and with the Verizon note 2 I had to use safestrap to flash a custom rom but can't flash kernels (so I'm not really new to flashing and all but new to the att scene and wanted to make sure bc I was told that with a locked bootloader I couldn't flash roms and a custom recovery and don't want to break my phone)
Thanks (also I only had an att note 2 is so I can get 4g lte on straight talk but I like having the note 3 features)
Again thanks for the help as of right now my att note 2 is a paper weight and if I can flash any custom rom on stock 4.3 it'd be great bc at least I wouldn't have wasted my money haha

I just used Odin and flashed phils cwm file. You can get it in either a flashable zip or and Odin flashable file. You just have to kill the Knox security deal with super su
