prevent e4gt from updating or nagging to update - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

i am posting something i discovered and it definatly worked for me and am posting to help others who like me had no sucess in using one of those update kill apk's this method i didcovered tested and soo far has rendered sucess for me im not sure if it will prevent future updates after ff18 but it definatly stopped my phone currently running gb from updating or even asking to update to ff8 ics update you must have root
i am not responsible for anyone who screws their phones up this is just something i tried and definatly helped me so i wanted to share
mu phone had already downloaded the update and kept nagging to update every 10 minutes or so when and if you try my method do not delete the ics update that will be found in the search as this method needs the update there and needs it to fail any modifications done to the system such as deleting device managment , debloating ,custom bootloader should all result in a failed update attempt and this is what you want
1st obtain root ofcourse
2nd obtain root explorer or something equivalent
3rd from root explorer on 1st page select menue and do a search for "update"
4th look for file " /data/data/com.sprint.ce.updater/shared_prefs/com.sprint.ce.updater_preferences.xml" you will see retry mode value by defualt it is set to true, change it to false ( if you change any system files such as deleting device managment or running custom bootloader it will fail) you want it to fail , buy changing the true value to false and allowing it to try to update even though you know it will fail it wont come back up with nagging notice to update atleast it worked for me hope helps someone else out there p.s after failed update attempt it may get stuck in bootloader with triangle or something just do battery pull then reboot then voila no more annoying msgs asking to update nearly a week now and no pop ups

[Q] Root help:"Main version older"

Hey ive been trying to root my evo all day it is on version 2.1-update1. I was able to root my brothers perfectly fine using the downloads and tutorial from the idiot-proof guide to rooting by thebiles. But on mine I get stuck right at the beginning, when i try to flash the PC36IMG my bootloader says main version older. I feel like ive tried everything if anyone can help I'd reallly appreciate it thanks.
Try simple root, and keep trying. I got that same error even with simple root on my buddies 3 times before it worked. Don't know why. Maybe try copying the pc36img to the sd card instead of letting simple root push it...gl!
I agree with the simple root approach. Not trying to highjack your post but I have a question back at you if I may. You say you have one root EVO and one not root? If so the the root has PRI 1.34 and the nonroot 1.40? Could you perhaps do a data speed comparison on these and post the results? I am real curious...
sorry man i saw your post like 2 minutes too late the simpleroot worked right before i refreshed this page thanks for the help though guys appreciate it
one more quick question while PC36IMG was flashing the 2nd "tp" file said bypassed next to it rather than OK like all the others and the first tp had a blank next to it...is this a problem i should look into before unlocking the nand and all that other good stuff?
No problem glad you got it working. This was kinda like going to the casino...getting up to go to the bathroom...coming back to see someone hit the jackpot on your machine....hahaha!!!
That is normal....mine did that.
thanks man appreciate it...one more question for anyone that can help, im using the idiot proof guide and im on step 56 but when i try to enter the adb shell i get an error from command prompt saying "error: more than one device and emulator" i entered the shell perfectly fine like 2 steps before that and used it to flash the new pc36img rom but now i get this error to enter shell again how do i fix this error?
Okay I came here thinking this might finally be it... but nope I tried all the solutions mentioned here but to no avail. I am frustrated and still getting the main version is older. Does anyone know what is causing this error. Please I'm using usb debugging I wiped and backed my SD and have ota that came out in June. I installed Microsoft net frame and htc drivers. I updated simple root and the update log said this was to fix the error but still getting the same error. Any suggestions
I have the same issue, pretty much have tried everything with no luck, kind bummed at the moment, hope someone can help
Thanks
I got to work FINALLY!!!!!
So finally i got the main version error older NO MORE. So i decided to share what i did in hopes that it will work for all of you frustrated out there.
1) Download simple root from xda forum, dont download it anywhere else. The first time i tried i downloaded it at another android forum and even though it may seem the same, this version for some reason was not pushing the files as it suppose to. So again download from forum. Search for it on XDA.
2) Be patient and prepare yourself.
3) Make sure you on the 147 ota version. Not froyo. or before any version before ota because you can use old simple root.
4) After you download it extract it to a folder. Choose whatever location suits you i like desktop so i can delete file after i use it and keep zip. Be sure to update the program. Open it and let it search for downlaod or go to root folder and search for the updater.
5) Before running the program check the obvious. Is usb debugging enable, Do i have microsoft netframe, Are my phone drivers correct. Is the usb cable correctly connected to my computer and phone. Did i choose charge only when connected to the computer.
6) Now on your phone, and this step did it for me, go to Settings>SDandPhoneStorage>FactoryDataReset. Brace yourself this will wipe data it will not change your version. But if you want do a backup the folder of your contacts and whatever you have in your SD card, this is the time to do so. Mount as disk drive, and remember to change back to CHARGE ONLY. I skipped this because rooting was more important than my girlfriends phone number.
7) Now youre noobiness is ready connect phone double check Step 5. In case you missed something.
8) Run the simple root downloaded from XDA forum. Wait for it to push files is wont take long but me patient. Think of it passing 180mb to sd card so it takes some time.
9) Phone will reboot in a screen with skating androids Push power button and WAIT. It will find file and you shouldnt be getting "main version older" reboot error you where getting if you paid close attention to detail. Now update push volume up.
10) Why so impatient wait for it to update files. Once its down just push volume up for reboot. First time it reboots after root or when u flash a rom it usually takes longer, enough to get u nervous but dont be WAIT.
11) Easy sailing now but youre not done yet. Hit recovery once your phone reboot. Choose the method you want i chose Clockwork it works just fine for flashing roms.
12) Congrats your fully root and can flash that cool rom youve been reading about. Suggestions: DamageControl or Cyanogen but go ahead and try whichever you like.
13) YOURE DONE WOOF
If for some reason, it happened to me with AvaFroyo, when you flash your rom it goes on a loop and keeps rebooting dont panic that is what the recovery is for just put your microSD on a card reader delete the rom that is giving you problem and place another one and Reflash. Read how to flash rom you have to wipe on Recovery menu everytime you flash a different rom.
I hope this helps...Its in plain english not Dev English so...

Probably, the other thread is talking about it.
Might as well ask now, do we have to unroot before upgrading?
can we unroot ?
I know we used to be able with the old superclick, but not sure now
Super one click is not working for me i get this error
Remounting system with read-only access.....
mount: mounting /dev/block/mmcblk1p21 on /system failed: Device or resource busy
OK
and it just repeats over and over thats a shame because there is so much damn bloatware.
^ So is the update unrootable? That sucks, I read the Australian OTA was rootable on another thread here.
I don't know if we can unroot the 2.1, I just saw the option on superoneclick when I rooted it and assumed that it could
what's new in this foyo?
If i have installed the official leak 34.4.9 before this one. Am i able to update ? if so how?
cuz my defy says im up to date.
Did anything change from official leak to the actual OTA update?
ends up i still have root acess after the update yes!!!!!!!!!11
This update should be rootable, i have flashed several different unofficial froyo ROMS, some with motoblur etc and all have been rooted with super one click 1.6.5
This update is bomb been waiting forever official froyo! Seems much less buggy then the limited release! Lovin my defy! And froyo!

Go here if you cant root this should work
http://www.mediafire.com/?zrbx82gqoacw23c
Yes, it's rootable (Super OneClick). No, you don't have to unroot prior to installing. I haven't done a factory reset after upgrading yet and everything seems to work so far, except the Gallery is "Loading Media Files" for an awfully long time.
I have a rooted Defy that has never had any custom ROMS or anything else done to it. The OTA update gets about 25% done and I get a status 7 error. Anybody have any ideas?
Hopefully it will be released in germany really soon...
so how is performance?
I installed froyo on my wifes defy and effectively bricked the unit I sm un sure if it was the lack of space on the unit or what but I got the black screen of death and despair so I had to wipe her phone thus losing everything in the process and apparently tmobile didnt have a clue that the ota froyo was even out, nice...., so I spoke to motorola and they where useless as well anyhoo after the update out does seem more responsive but the system sounds seen to be gone and there is a lot more crap ware installed, booooo and I cannot seem to get the computer to recognize the phone in terms of the app market over all not too impressed although tmobile tv is preinstalled.........any idea how to get the crap ware uninstalled and the app market working?

Same boat I was also at work busy phone updated and bam now I am brick. I even used Titanium backup to remove system updater and the thing STILL updated.
Can some one help us please
nick4nick good news! I am unbricked here's how:
First download the program from this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1126354
It is a self extracting rar in non english (not sure the language), make sure to set your extract destination as mine wanted to install it in the Firefox directory.
Anyways...
If you need to install the drivers for your phone to recognize when you hold back and plug it in they are in the drivers folder just run the ggsetup-2.2.0.10.
If you already have those drivers ignore that then, and open the X10FlashTool file (I right clicked and ran as adminitrator) Click the Flash button and follow the steps. (It will say connect phone while holding back at this point DO NOT do it earlier than when it tells you or it will fail.)
Next it will run through some text about how it is flashing your phone etc, when it says to enable debugging blah blah blah you're done.
I unplugged my phone turned it on, got the SE screen, the android screen and was back on 2.3.2. It said "update failed" and I laughed because I clearly tried to stop it.
Last info, in the thread I started when I was in a panic too someone said we need to delete mobile care using titanium backup, I had just removed the updater portion which is not enough. Hopefully you get it working, good luck!
thanks !!!! i will try it
Evil-Eye ' you are my new friend ''''' THANKS
Sounds like it worked, good thing we avoided disaster.
hi guys
when u said u were bricked and now repaired?
is ur radio working or not?
Mine was simfree on o2 running "R800i_3.0.1.A.0.145_UK" , unlocked bootloader , over the air update killed my phone , after applying the fix in post one, and doing a complete wipe , everything seems fine , radio working and everything.

My radio is working but I am getting insufficient space on device now wondering if that has anything to do with recovering from a brick. Basically I can't install anything from the market or update any apps.
Minds to getting insufficient space on device, but i do know that i have lots of space. We need help!!!
I'm terrified of this happening to me. I just got my phone and can't use rom manager to create a backup rom because clockwork has no xperia install. What can/should I do in advance?
Sent from my R800x using XDA App
OK I got fed up so here's what I did:
I relocked my bootloader and went COMPLETELY stock. That will fix the insufficient space, also I read you can just flash the tft but since I'm not that proficient at this since this is my first droid I just went 100% stock.
I updated to 2.3.3 to get that over with, then I re unlocked my bootloader redid the root, then I locked my bootloader again.
I decided to just keep the bootloader locked so I don't have to deal with the worries of not updating. However using Titanium backup and removing Mobile care will stop you from updating if you are insistent on never updating. Good luck to everyone, you can definitely get to where I am though. Rooted 2.3.3 locked bootloader and able to accept OTA updates from now on

Star A2000 Chinese phone with MT6516 chipset want to root 2.3.6, did search

Hello, I am new here and I tried to post in http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1285573 but I have not made the 10 required posts.
I am only looking to root my phone so that I can make it a little faster. The LauncherPro app did a lot already but I failed on findind a decent typing keyboard
Also, would like to run VM Heap manager and look in to a bit of overclocking the CPU
However, after passing the masochistic Captcha on this forum , I can post here. The above thread I posted the link of speaks about a Startools.zip which is not to be found it also has some other attachements I feel are not useful to me.
However, I did install z4root (just downloaded somewhere, not sure if that is a problem) and tried *temporary* root. Which does not work, it says it works, but it doesn't according to several rooted apps.
I am not in to changing ROMS or such, not sure about Clockwork mod or restoring factory settings either, I would like to delete the stupid Imo beta software for example and other ones who seem to start and login unasked and I can kill them it starts itself up again and that is annoying because it is my phone!
Now I did not dare to try to root my device with z4root by hitting the root permanently button as adviced in that topic.
However, what should I do? It is just so I require the extra speed and I am happy with this phone which with added speed like LauncherPro already is doing a decent job I feel with a good price/ performance
Please help me a bit, I searched, oh yes, I searched.
regards,
Richard
p.s. It is running Android 2.3.6 I am happy with, I don't feel the need to upgrade this thing, want to make it faster only, not brick it or take unneccasry risk it is a phone ffs

Hi, that is exactly where I looked, see my first post.
The issue I have is that I was unable to find a good way of rooting, one that is safe.
Now people say that rooting can be unsafe but there is not explained how.
Assuming the rooting software is properly programmed, I fail to find if an unsuccesful rooting attempt will leave the phone's software unchanged.
Also there is no confirmation on this Star A2000 if it is rootable or not. There is a manual saying use z4root but this didn't seem to work, atleast the temporary root did not work at all, and this manual did just say permanent root it, not permanent root it because temporary root won't work.
I can't tell if there is a difference in a temporary root and a permanent root with z4root, I don't know what it is doing there.
I mean that I am not worried about the change's I am able to make to my phone, after it is succesfully rooted. I know Linux.
I also won't try changing ROM's, all I want is to change the memory heap to speed it up a little bit and disable the start up scripts of unwanted software that is booted all the time, advanced task killer, the Android way of managing applications is able to kill them and the system just starts them again. That is annoying.
I am after only this, I won't deinstall programs, I just would disable some of them because I might later find I need them again.
I also won't disable or remove vital software for the phone booting.
But how hard can it be for rooting software publisher, to tell to their users it is safe to attempt rooting, even if it can't be rooted, or in other words, will it leave the telephone software untouched with an unseccesful attempt and will a succesful root also ensure a succesful reboot of the phone?
IMHO, that is all I need to know about rooting and I can't find anything about that anywhere.

Gonna lose it - 4.3 "Security Notice - unauthorized access..."

I searched all yesterday and today and cannot re-root after upgrading from 4.1.2 to 4.3. I always do a ton of searchs no matter what forum I'm on because I don't want to seem lazy like some others out there but this is beyond me. I registered so I could make a thread and this is what I have and the situation:
Samsung Galaxy S3 SCH-R530U
US Cellular
upgraded from 4.1.2 to 4.3

baseband version R30UVXUBMJA

SE for Android status Enforcing SEPF_SCH-530U_4.3_0010
hardware version R530U.01
Previously rooted using Odin, SuperSU, Titanium Backup Pro, ODIN_CWM6.tar.md5
I took the phone back to stock using unroot through SuperSU and upgraded from 4.1.2 to 4.3 OTA with no problems. I've been trying to re-root using numerous combinations (ODIN3 v3.07) and no matter what I do the Samsung Security notice blocks rights to SuperSU (beta v1.76) and Titanium Backup Pro so it won't root. This is the message I get:
"Security notice - unauthorized access to a secured area has been blocked. Tap to learn more."
The most recent md5 file I've tried is CF-Auto-Root-d2usc-d2usc-schr530u.tar.md5 but nothing else has worked either. I'm at my wits end and my brain is about ready to explode. I just need to be able to access Titanium Backup Pro so I can shut off a few programs and processes. Any help is VERY VERY much appreciated. Thanks!!!!!
TTT for some help please.

I have same phone. Recently went to Slimbean (4.3.1). I have Triangle Away and it couldn't access root. I also used CF-Auto-Root. Used a root check app, it says I am rooted. Odin also said device passed. Super User says I am missing a binary and I need to root manually. Trying to find that info
If you find anything out please let me know. A root checker says I'm rooted but I can't access SuperSU or Titanium backup as the S3 is blocking it.
Did you get the Slimbean 4.3.1 for USCC and if so where?
There was just a new SuperSU update and it granted me access to everything. I asked if I wanted it to disable KNOX and I said yes. Titanium Backup works and so does Triangle Away. I think I'm good to go.
How did you update?

How did you update to 4.3? Did you use the simple update you can download to computer, or did you use Kies? I'm not having any luck with either. I chatted twice with a Samsung Tech person, but neither one had any help for me. Just thought I'd check to see if you could help me. It's not easy finding someone else on here with US Cellular. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

I tried to download the simple update but my phone wouldn't update to the 4.3 so I did it over the air. You probably know but the OTA software update is in "about device." We have four S3s in our home and only one of them hasn't been able to get the download OTA yet. The only bug that I've found is when you start the phone it will show numerous downloads in the notifications and they will come back even if you clear them. The way to get rid of them is to go to the download icon (green arrow) and clear all the downloads and restart. Hope this helps.

I have downloaded the simple update, but get an error msg while trying to install to computer. (1152: error extracting) whatever that means. I uninstalled all Samsung anything from my computer, restarted, shut off firewall & Norton, downloaded again, but same thing while trying to install to computer. I updated to 4.1.2 this way, but keep getting an error on 4.3 update.
I tried to go through Kies. It updated Kies to 2.6, it said Kies3 was for 4.3. When I tried to hook into Kies, it refuses to accept my IMEI #. Says its incorrect. wth. The Samsung Chat Tech told me USCellular 4.3 update wasn't available yet through Kies OTA.
When I tried to get the 4.1.2 update through the phone, it would never give it to me. Even though I unrooted and used Triangle Away, it still knew my sg3 was modified. Maybe I'm doing something wrong. Do you have any suggestions ? I'm not very tech savvy when it comes to these phones.
I'm sorry to bother you with this, but it's rare to find someone with USCellular on here. Thank you so much for your time.
I got the error message too so something is wrong with the download from Samsung/USCC. Just keep trying to do the OTA update and maybe it will go through. My GUESS is that Samsung and USCC stopped doing the update because of a couple bugs or issues. The reason I say that is I updated mine one day (worked), my wife's the next (worked), my son's the next days later (worked) and tried my other son's a couple days later and no update for him. I unrooted mine before the update without doing triangle away so I don't know if that really has anything to do with it at all. However, it does have to be unrooted if you do the OTA. Good luck!
I used Triangle Away, then unrooted. My phone still says 'modified' even though counter no longer says 2. When I try OTA through the phone, it constantly sticks on 'checking for updates'. I'm sure it's because it still says modified. I tried using Kies, my phone will not connect. Keeps saying my s/n is incorrect. I understand my IMEI has been corrupted.
I have started a thread on here for some help in how to get the 4.3 update.
Thank you so much for trying to help me. I will be eligible for an upgrade soon. I just may have to wait to have anything more than 4.1.2.
Again, thank you.

it looks to me like samsung are finally making a stand against rooting although i do not agree with this as i use an app called freedom and when i open it i get a security issue from Samsung
The only reason i left iphone for samsung was because i felt like they had something other apple with hardware and i was happy to do this as i could get root access but for now i see that this might not be possible for a while.
i recommend installing a normal superuser.apk and that might work but i cannot check this right now as i am out
i hope this little bit of information did help in anyway
