Metal Case review. - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Hello just a mini review.
I bought one of these http://cgi.ebay.ca/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=190648473446&var=490053725270#ht_2560wt_1117

I got this silver one .
I'm really liking the shiny metallic look. It's probably not for everyone, but I liked it so much I ordered a blue one too . The case itself scratches kind of easily. It has a small faint scratch mark already and I've only been using it for a couple of days. It's also really hard to take off, much harder than any other case I've tried so far (I've used SPU rubber cases).
I also ordered some metallic battery covers to see if they look any good , got a blue and silver one. I'll update with pictures when they arrive (about 2 weeks >.>).
All in all. :good: I love this metal look.
Edit: The battery covers look really odd in my opinion. The colours don't match the border.
Here's my reception with the case after using it for a while:
I can still connect to GPS but it connects kind of slow, some times fast. I think that's just the gps being finicky though, seems to happen a lot with this phone in my area.
3G speeds seem to be unaffected (according to speed test app when i put on and take off my case)
wifi reception is lowered slightly (not much in my case, might effect you more if you have a weak router).
NFC doesn't work.

Interesting. What's the material? Aluminum? Notice any drop in wifi/cellular signal with this case?

Does it fit with the free extended Samsung battery offered by sprint?

I'm not actually sure what it's made out of. So far I haven't noticed any signal decrease, so it might not be all metal.

Not sure does the battery add any extra bulk? The case is meant for stock galaxy nexus size (I'm on gsm model if it matters)

Thanks for the reply. Is there any way you can just take a couple more pics of it? I kinda want to see it from other angles and wondering how it looks from the inside. Its okay if you cant, I'll still most likely get it as it does look pretty sharp.

Wow perfect timing, I was just looking at these last night before I went to bed. And couldn't find any reviews on them, do you recommend this case? I have a few Tpu cases and a barely there case, I like to switch it up sometimes.

That looks to be the same as my old case: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1611285
The back plate is metal, aluminum I think, and honestly can't recommend it because of that even though I did like the look (check my last 2 posts in that thread).

Yeah they should be good, they aren't the best case but it works fine. My friend today was using a red version of this and dropped his phone from about chest level onto concrete and the phone was unscathed except for a very minor scratch on the bottom (cause the case doesn't protect the bottom/top for some reason)
Edit: Ah guess it does block NFC. Good thing nothing in canada uses it xD.

Haha. WiFi, on the other hand, is a pretty big issue...
Paul's Modaco patched Google Wallet works great everywhere I've tried it, and I loaded up my Google Prepaid card with $100 so NFC is a deal-breaker with cases for me.
Very happy with my current case. Just ordered a new one since I dropped my phone and the case cracked up the side a little. Did it's job perfectly.

Wifi still seems to work fine for me, but wifi in my house is pretty strong. Ah, I never used google prepaid cause not every place has pay pass enabled so I would still have to use my credit card half the time.

wow something different. I like!

I was just looking at these on eBay tonight. Any issues with GPS?

iSkin Cases for Galaxy S III

Saw an article on this today and it looks good...not too excited about the pricing on their site or the name beginning with an "i"
The iSkin Aura basically looks like a premium version of the Ringke Slim Lite (Which I have and is great btw). I might get it but I think I'll just wait until it hopefully appears on Amazon with a cheaper price and prime shipping.

The ecplise aura will look good with my pebble blue gs3. I would have preferred a white/silver version instead of white/pink :/
The Aura one's look really nice, but didn't someone say something about aluminum backings interfering with NFC? The TPU Vibe cases for $30 is a joke.

Just read this reply about the Barely There Case.
But, if you never think you're gong to use NFC, then it's a moot point.

Anyone tried this? The price may appear a little higher.
It's beautiful but I don't really like that it won't stand on every surface.
Got my Aura today. The case itself looks very nice and feels solid, though I believe it does look a bit off on my white model. Very strong distinction between the phone and the case. (In the images in OP the phone looks far more gray than the actual phones - perhaps an optical illusion from the background?)
The case can be a pain to get off - partly due to the phone feeling so fragile when you start putting force on it. This is a good thing from a case perspective, as I'm sure it won't easily come off when it shouldn't. It doesn't add a lot of size to the phone, but with a phone this big (and small hands) you can tell every little bit. Not bad, but I did have to adjust.
NFC does NOT work. Which I'm disappointed by. I use it for all the vending machines/restaurants here at work, where I usually have my phone in my hands already. Due to this, I may look at another case option that allows NFC. If it wasn't for this, I'd keep the case for sure.
Pulling it out of the box I echoed the thoughts of "I'm actually paying this much for a case?" from when I bought it. No Snake Surprise in a can, or confetti was expected, but it was anti-climatic. I expect cases to earn their cost when the device is finally dropped. No, I will not drop this on purpose, but it feels like it will protect it reasonably well. I say reasonably because it does not wrap much to the front of the phone, so a screen-first landing will certainly still have a higher risk of scratching - but I like that it doesn't add much thickness. Plus, it does come with a screen protector.
I like it, and may keep it. If you use NFC, skip this and look into a silicon option... Maybe the vibes? (Someone please post if that allows NFC) If you don't use this and you have the cash burning through your pocket, I'd suggest this to a friend.

Pretty much...
I like the look of these, fairly unique.
With that said,i already sent my refund request due to the nfc issue.
I bought the D3O case from tmobile, similar to this with a gimmicky "military grade" padding inside but so far i like it a lot. Nice grippy rubber coating on the outside and its fairly thin. Makes the phone not cramp your hand
I havent seen anyone else mention this case, sorry if it was already

Got a reply, and it was worth the $40. They are sending me a vibes case, and will contact me when their new NFC compliant version of the Aura is available to send to me. I'm always willing to pay a bit extra for a good company, and I certainly wouldn't have gotten this from an ebay seller. So while I'm not thrilled with the NFC issue initially, iSkin handled it perfectly.
Confirmed-No workie!

I tried NFC today for the first time with my iSkin Aura on my Samsung Galaxy S3. It definitely does NOT work. I held it up to my Nexus 7 several times with the case on in many different positions. Damn, I really like this case too. To confirm, I took the case off and tried sending a pic from the S3 to the Nexus 7 and presto chango, there it was. Now I need to decide if NFC is going to be used enough to have me looking elsewhere for a case. Anyone with any Option "2" cases for me? Anyone want to buy a Black/Red Aura? LOL! [email protected]
Peace, Out!

I have it on my schedule to call them today. Thanks for the heads up. I have purchased a few products from iSkin and they have always been great to deal with. I wouldn't have known about this if I didn't try and transfer a pic to my Nexus 7 yesterday. I was like "WTF"? I know this is supposed to work. Take the case off and presto/chango it works. So now I get to call customer service and get it handled.

NEW! Galaxy Nexus Metal Skin Frame Bumper--Verizon Compatible

Hey everyone, i was going through Ebay and noticed that they finally got a new design
for that aluminum bumper case they've been selling. I've seen this one before in another
thread but there was never a link for us to purchase. This case seems to be a lot thinner
than the previous Aluminum bumper. I already purchased a silver one.

What do y'all think?
looks good let us know how it goes .
seems to me it would fit an extended battery
But I don't see how the cover fits on !
They do look nice and hopefully someone can get some pics of them on their Nexus's. And hopefully they do fit the Verizon version. I know Aluminum bumpers dont have any give in them and thats why they have been incompatible before so hope the description is accurate.
I'm assuming that the case is a snap on. I was looking at some of the Cruzer Lite cases, but I think this will be a decent replacement for about the same price.

The case itself is two pieces but I think its more of a slip on bumper than a snap on. You can refer to this post to check out a review.

Um... you do realize that the VZW version is thicker right?
I've found that people will list the Verizon Model in the item name but sell accessories that do not fit the Verizon model.
For example, I bought this:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/30070173227...X:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649#ht_2978wt_1275
Not noticing the description said:
"Galaxy Nexus CDMA SCH-i515, Galaxy Nexus GSM i9250"
And ended up with a case that didn't fit properly. When I messaged them about it they said I ordered the wrong thing regardless of how the item was named.
As a result I tend to look in the description for the specific word Verizon before I get anything.
If the one you get fits that'd be great. This is just a heads up if anything

Hey joey. Good find. Let us know when you get it if it does indeed fit, I'm actually really interested to see if it would. I'm also wondering if it would fit extended batteries based on the fact that it appears to be more of a bumper than a case.

The case on the picture is exactly the same. The cutouts and sliding mechanism are the same all the way. It's just good to see those bumpers are now available without direct export. Enjoy them they look good in real.
Looks pretty neat. I'm wondering if it affects the phone's signal. $15...I'd like to review it but kinda expensive for a case.
Most people had issues with GPS after using this case. I thought I remember hearing it messed with cell signal as well, but I can't remember; if you do a search you can see that these are not worth it.

The case is pretty much a Kraken case with a battery built into the back. The battery is 2000mah.
With medium usage yesterday it stayed at 100% from 7am to about 1030pm (with using the trident battery along with the Samsung battery)
It is a bulky case..its alittle bigger than a Kraken case, but it feels stronger than a Kraken case. I dropped it afew times and it never split apart like the Kraken did..so they might of fixed this issue.
So ya..figured I'd put this on here since I didn't see anyone else talk about this yet. Atleast when I searched for it I didn't see anything about it.
By the way I got mine on Amazon for $45 with free shipping so you can find it cheaper than the $70 asking price. :good:
Case looks awesome. Looks better than the kraken. I love trident products. If it weren't for purchasing the Samsung 3000mah battery I would totally picked up this case.

Well, I finally got mine and in short I'd say this case is good but not great. I'll start with the Cons First
1. The Rubberized case that comes with it is quite loose fitting so it slips off pretty easy.
2. The case is large for only a 2000mah battery, I feel that they probably could of used a higher cap battery.
3. ***This may only be mine*** The bottom snaps dont stay together all the time which worries me because if they are not snapped properly then the stress of holding the bottom of the case together is on the usb port.
Pros
1, You can use the rubberized case as a stand alone case (although I wouldnt)
2. It comes with a belt clip (again I wont use it, but its nice to have)
3. Comes with screen protection
4. When its all together its fairly rugged
5. It has the ability to select what you charge first when its plugged in (the phone or the case) and when one is charged, it starts charging the other.
6. Price, I found mine for only $45 shipped. Retail is $70 though.
I'll try and post some pictures later.

You're not the only one. My case does the same thing. It's almost as if the rubber inner case is too big for the design on the bottom side of the case. I just sent an e-mail to Trident's Customer Service explaining the issue...I'm hopeful for a reply.
I did the same, lol.
I got mine today after leading a Harlem Shake video at a sales training course. After misreading the instructions, I finally got it working.
It's taking some time to get used to the size, but it's an awesome case. Looking forward to putting it through its paces.

The battery thats with the case is used to charge the battery in the phone itself. So me personally i run it normal then when my battery gets to about 50% i turn on the cases battery to charge the samsung battery.

If this second one still has the same issue, I'm going to ask for an exchange to a standard Kraken and refund for the difference.

Being taiwanese, this thing sells in taiwan for approx $32usd. Now the person who imported these (US distributor) is selling on amazon for $50.

The shipping cost on Amazon is bloody expensive!
OP. Could you please "guesstimate" of the total weight for the whole package? I'm thinking of using some shipping service..
The entire packaging was super light. I'm not good at guessing weight like that. I'll check the packing slip tomorrow and see if it has a weight on it.
So far I love the case and havnt noticed any signal loss. It feels great in the hand.. very premium. Volume button is much better than flat volume buttons on stock phone. Power button is easy to press. Cutouts and fit is phenomenal. Very easy to install. people with headphone plugs that are on the larger side are going to have a hard time with the headphone jack cutout though. My car adapter plug barely fits in.
Overall I'm happy with the purchase and I absolutely love the silver case on the silver phone.
I'm using the www.bestskinsever.com full body skin on my phone to protect the back and screen . highly recommended .. price is perfect .. install was easy and it looks great. can't even tell I have a screen protector or back skin on the phone.

Looks great. Only problem I have is the price.
Being taiwanese, this thing sells in taiwan for approx $32usd. Now the person who imported these (US distributor) is selling on amazon for $50.
DAMN

My guess is he views it as scalping as opposed to work (order it, ship it to the US, then resell for a higher cost than the shipping).

Yes, that's exactly what he said.
Here are a few pics of the black one.... sorry for the pics i know they suck they're nowhere near as good as good as jtgarza3's pics but its something at least right lol
So he's supposed to pay to have the product imported... Then sell it at no profit or a loss? He has to pay for importing the product then make it worth his time and make a profit

Anyone order the blue one?
Thinking of using blue with my black.

ya, if the tw kid realized that Amazon fee is 15% on electronics and its accessories, he won't say that. Forget it, he is just a kid....

Any drop in GPS or WiFi that you can tell? I had one like this for my gnex that made the GPS useless.

It picks up 2 less satellites and 4dbm drop. His signal in general though is very strong in that area. It's when your in weak signal locations, the case will affect it and become more noticeable.
It's a nice case though and 4dbm isn't too bad especially for an all metal bumper. I remember original ones for the iPhone being far worse and only recently have the new ones with plastic inserts don't affect the signal at all.
I locked on in a second and it narrowed down my GPS location to within 3 meters within seconds.

Went to look for this case on amazon after seeing your pictures and it's not available at this time =( Guess i'm going to keep an eye out for it. Thanks for the great pics and helping at least myself settle on a bumper finally.
I'm shocked It even messes with the signal being the antenna are out the back..
On a side note the front looks fantastic but the back is was too big.

Tolerable then, I'll give it a test drive.
I'm wondering if having a poly/plastic skin on the phone would help mitigate the drop in signal a bit, worth a shot when I get mine.
Thanks

Cheap Aluminium case from Hong Kong

I'm really pleased with this. Cost me £12 including postage from HK to UK....
It feels great and adds an extra bit of weight to it. Gives the S3 a quality feel without bulking it up too much.
You have to remove your normal battery cover to fit it. It screws together. I haven't actually noticed any detriment to signal, contrary to my expectations.
Here's some pics....

They come in different colours / combinations of colours. Think I'll get blue next:

How about GPS and NFC? And can you please provide a link?

I added a link above. I use GPS daily with Tasker and noticed no Ill effects. I cannot comment on NFC. The back cover is also aluminium so it may be effected.
Its the same case that's been discussed here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2287497
I had bought one and returned it. Same price and place.
Signal was a little weaker but GPS hardly ever got a lock. Sent back within days. Everyone on the thread has the same problem.
Looks nice but...AVOID LIKE THE PLAGUE.
There are many cases in that thread. The one in the OP is the hunterf which I was trying to get but couldn't. I knew that would affect signal. I couldn't find a hunterf on ebay or in the uk so I got the cheap one. Signal great as I said

thx will give it a shot then coz really like look of the case. cheers
It is really nice. Caveat though, I haven't noticed any signal issues but that doesn't mean there aren't going to be any. I'll do some tests at work next week and compare ASU / db

This was the same one i bought. Same case - different printing. I suggest you double check your gps before its too late to return. If your GPS does work, you'll be the only one that owns the case where it works.
Its the all-aluminium case that stops it.

Different = not the same. Clone S3's tell you not everything that looks the same, is the same

I'm sorry you had a bad experience with whatever case you bought. I've had a good experience with this particular case and I am sharing it.
I got the occasional lock using the dud case.
It must be the different print on the back or a new type of aluminium that they use which lets GPS signal through that makes it work perfectly for you.
Might have to get myself another one.
It must be different then. I get locks on the bus. The above screen shot, I walked outside my house. Locked 6 sats in about 15 seconds.
Still no idea about nfc. I assume that will be pretty effected but no way to test

I have this same case in blue. It looks and feels awesome makes the phone feel a bit more premium.
But like said, it definitely affects signal and gps, and because of this i felt that my battery life was worse because the phone was constantly trying to connect.
I still throw it on every once in a while because i like how it looks but always end up going back to my urban armor because of the signal issues.
IDK about OP, but like everyone said it affects signal so be prepared.
Edit: Also I really think that it's the exact same as the HunterF case just with some cheapo branding. But for a 1/4 of the price its worth a shot.
Yes, you should absolutely, always expect an aluminium case to be detrimental to signal. If you already have weak signal, DON'T buy an alu case.
That said, my rudimentary asu tests have been inconclusive. Meaning I cannot prove the case affects signal, nor can I prove it doesn't.
All I can say is I can still fix gps and whilst closely monitoring asu levels, without the case the range was 7-12 asu and with the case the range was 7-12 asu. Networks fluctuate by their very nature so its an impossible test to do scientifically using standard production masts.
Sometimes it appeared that putting the case on lowered the asu signal level. Other times it went down when removing the case and backup up when putting it on. I imagine both these results to be coincidence. For these reasons, I declare the tests inconclusive.
