[Q] Rooting for beginners.

I recently purchased an XPlay and I'm having issues with the battery/ I've followed a lot of what I have read from various people here. Removing unwanted apps, turning off wifi/gps etc etc and although I've noticed some improvement it isn't really a lot to justify how much I paid for the phone compared to how much it needs to be charged.
I've read a few paragraphs of the rooting guide and a lot of other threads about something calle Gingerbreak. I'm very interested in 'rooting' my phone as many more users note a stark difference in performance and there's a lot of guff on the phone that I can't remove without it.
I'm not fully proficient in the ways of computing so I was wondering if someone could just highlight some threads and put them in a step by step. I see things like Titanium backup and superuser. Are they apps or things I need to install or do I pay for them?
Also is there a risk in destroying the device if I root it? I really don't want to be left with a lump of plastic I can't to anything with. I'd appreciate any and all input on offer, and would appreciate some patience, as I really am new to all this.

Gingerbreak is what you will use to root your phone this grants super user status and install superuser, simply download it pop it on your memory card, download astro file manager from the market place (its free) navigate to gingerbreak and run it.
After you've done that download busybox installer from the market run it and let it do it's mojo. after this you can forget you ever did any of the above
It's pretty safe and shouldnt harm your phone, you can still restore to stock with this method if you choose to using Sony Ericson's restore software.
Once that is done you can use root uninstaller again free from the market to uninstall all the crap. be sure to check this thread
My battery wil last a couple of days with moderate use, but i hardly ever use it moderately unless im at work im mostly always on it.
Titanium backup (free and paid) is just an app from the market to allow backups and restore for when you flash your phone.
But and I have to stress this all this info is available on the forum you have to search and read on XDA i appreciate your new to all this but that's even more reason to read, read, read. your lucky we dont have many people yet here in the play section had this been the i9000 or nexus S forum you would be torn a new one for asking these questions... but while we are a small group I see no reason not to help each other.

To ad some, backup your sdcard as some has encountered a format of it under the rooting process and lost data. Further more some has had problems after a OTA update after rooting (afaik it's only people that have rooted with the unlock bootloader procedure), but some people bricked there devices while updating and afaik there's no fully working recover from that yet. Just to be safe check for updates before rooting, that's what I did, if any update do it and then turn auto search off in >settings>about phone>software update. Then go for root :-D

Followed this to the letter, as well as the guide provided in the links and I think I'm OK. Have Superuser on the phone, installed uninstaller and removed a lot of what I didn't want, making sure to follow the list and thread for what not to remove. Just in the process of restoring the contents of my SD card that I backed up and hopefully the phone should run a lot smoother for a lot longer.
Are there any other advantages of rooting the phone? can it improve the performance of the emulators at all? I only ask as my son used the n64 emulator and he finds it hard to play a few games as they keep stuttering and we have to turn the music off.
If there is a thread I can keep note of that updates what features are available through rooting then I must have missed it. I did look this time. I even got the wife to double check. Last thing I need is a virtual dressing down

hey guys!!! i just wanna say I followed the same instructions and eveyrthing worked perfectly! I've been a long time jailbreaker of everything apple and love android but for some reason was always iffy on rooting. You guys made it super easy so thanks a bunch!!!

I've noticed a vast improvement in the memory usage but the battery, not so much. If anything it seems to wear down faster. I placed it on charge up to 100%, then unplugged it with wifi and updates turned off, as well as having it on gsm and not 3G (or whatever it's called). I also don't have many widgets running and those that do don't use a lot of memory anyway.
I watched Spider-Man 3, which is roughly 2 hours long and within that time it had dropped to 92. Left it a while longer, about another hour and it's now at 88%. At this rate it'll be less than 24hrs before it's dead. Am I missing something??

12% gone after 3 hours & you watched a movie too ? That's pretty good going.
I don't know of many devices that you could watch in excess of 5 movies on a single charge.

I don't mean ON the device. I watched a film independently, while the phone sat idle on a shelf. So basically 12% in 3 hours after doing nothing.
EDIT 1day, 2hrs, 37min 8s the battery has lasted and has 37% left. Any good?

I've noticed there have been a few new firmware updates for the XPlay in the UK and as I;m still none the wiser about all this rooting business, and have just been getting by with rooting 2.3.2, I'm wondering how I got about continuing to root to the latest firmware?

If OTA update is available (settings > about phone > software update) which it should be since you are on 2.3.2 you can do the ota and keep root on 2.3.3.
The OTA update will not work if you have uninstalled any of the preinstalled apps off your phone. If you have you will either have to reinstall them from here. Or reinstall 2.3.2 a fresh (to get everything back) then root then do the ota to get onto 2.3.3 rooted. You can find 2.3.2 to reflash here.
I personally freeze my apps instead of uninstalling them since i can then just unfreeze them and then do the ota if a new one is available. It does not free up internal memory (since they are still on the phone, but they will not run) it will free up ram tho so faster boot up etc. The same effect uninstalling them would do.
Also 2.3.3 is the latest update atm. The xloud update is not available on ota atm so you cannot root that one yet with a locked bootloader.

I wouldn't have dreamt to have that battery life in my previous phone (Galaxy S).

I've uninstalled quite a lot of the stock apps so can I just reinstall 2.3.2 or do I have to put everything back on it first?

If you reinstall 2.3.2 it will wipe your phone clean and take it back to stock (in other words reinstall everything again) you dont need to do anything before flashing just do it and everything will be back to when you first got the phone. You will loose everything on your phone apps, games e.t.c but stuff on your sd card will be fine.
But if you want rooted 2.3.3 you need to get the stock apps back and reflashing would be the easiest method.

Is it worth it? Am I missing anything if I don't upgrade?

I noticed better battery life. Plus it seems better all round. IMHO i would upgrade. Plus with the ota method you still keep root.

I've gone thru the stock apps list but i'm none the wiser as to what I have and what I got rid of. This is all Greek to me tbh and gingerbreak seemed so much simpler. I think I'll leave it for now despite your instructions i'm still confused and I don't want to be left with a 500 pound brick.

Unless you have an unlocked bootloader. It is impossible to brick your phone OTA updating.....

You cannot brick your phone when using flashtools to downgrade. Flashtools is the exact same as using SEUS/Pc Companion to update your phone. If your bootloader is locked (unless you have unlocked it, it will be) and anything goes wrong then you can use SEUS/Pc Companion to fully repair your phone.
Bricking only really applys to people who tired using SEUS, Pc Companion or OTA to update after unlocking their bootloaders.
When i got my xplay i was a total android newb also. But if you ever decide to give it a go follow the steps below.
Basically what you want to do is download FlashTool version 0.2.9.1 Beta from here extact it to a folder on your desktop. Run the "ggsetup-2.2.0.10" from within the drivers folder.
Then download the .184 UK firmware (which is 2.3.2) from here. Then go into the folder you extracted flashtools to and place the .ftf file from within the Xperia_Play_Release_Generic_UK.rar into the the firmware folder.
Turn off your phone. Now run the X10FlashTool.exe and it will load. Click flash then the firmware selection box will come up. Make sure "wipe user data box" is ticked then click ok. It will ask you to turn your phone off (which you have done), now while holding the back key plug in your usb cable and it will flash 2.3.2. When it starts flashing you can let go of the back key. When it is finished start your phone up and all the stuff you deleted will be back.
Now do as you did before put gingerbreak on your phone. Install it and let it root. Once it has rooted go to settings > about phone > software update and update it to 2.3.3 over wifi and you will be on 2.3.3 rooted. Job done

And some other apps which first owner installed i'm guessing but none of which came with the phone.
I used root Uninstaller (free ver.)and like a noob never backed up (small SDcard)
but today i found out if i want to update to future SE i will need to install them again.
found a link on another thread but the links seemed broke.
I have just rooted my phone to installed Rooted apps i don't want to mess around with bootloading or custom Rom right now.
ICS looks fine to me and i may want it if i can on a rooted device.
so my noob question is....
I would like to know how to install what i have removed if possible?

You could use the forums and search the "Xperia Play Android Development" for a .zip of the stock 4.0.A.2.368 software and open the zip goto>System>Apps and copy the apks to your phone's memory card and install them,
or you can use this link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1221105&highlight=stock+2+3+4 and flash the orginal ROM using Flashtool. There are plenty of tutorials about Flashtool on Google and in the forums.
Once you've got the original ROM back, you can do a Titanium Backup and all that jazz to get root back.
Let me actually check to see if I have backups of those apps and I'll post them.

Edit: I don't have backups. But also just wanted to add that you can always install the latest SE update yourself once it comes out. Don't worry about not having those apps. You can flash it with Flashtool. Someone will post about it in "Xperia Play Android Development" once the official Android 4.0 is released and they will have instructions. thanks for reply but all the .zipFiles I found are now broke or removed.
wanted to stay away from Flashtools always have problem's with CMD stuff.
I guess by the time ICS comes out i might know a bit more.
so in short if i can find the apks for the stock apps i can install them using

You can use a root explorer to access the system folder on your phone, any apk can be installed on your phone by enabling the unknown sources option, you don't need flashtool to do it.

No, you flash your entire system with Flashtool. I don't think there's a way to extract the apks from a .ftf file. If you had the zips yea u could just extract the apks and send them to ur phone and install or install them via flashtool or adb/fastboot.
Another option is to search Google for the apks for each one of the games you uninstalled. You could very likely find them that way.
Yes, it's on phone memory. If you have a root explorer app u can get to system. System directory is not on Sd. It's at /system. (One bak from Sdcard is the default directory where the System folder can be found.

Can't u jst find an exact firmware of ur phne n flash it via flashtool??

Thanks to justinchi I did google search and found a Apk for Bruce Lee game,installed it with root explorer form a new fold on sd root.
But I was wondering how I can move it to playstationpocket app ?
Does it have to be in the pocket like before for an update in the future ? Hope thats clear...

Well unfortunately, the ICS update for the PLAY has been cancelled for now:

But I don't think the Bruce Lee was in the Playstation Pocket App. It was in the Xperia Play launcher. If it isn't showing up there, try to use titanium backup to convert it to a system app and then reboot your phone. It's not sure to work, but I hope it does.

sad news about sony...but sony have a habit of letting down gamers
my vita is collecting dust due too them not pulling there finger out...
anyone know a fix for dead pace or is it just a touchscreen platform now.. i sear i saw a vid on youtube of it running on XP controls..

Awesome, glad it worked. Yea, the Vita is a little disappointing right now, but there are a lot of great titles coming for it. I think it still has hope! Gravity Rush, Soul Sacrifice (though it's very eery), LittleBigPlanet, and others. They can't abandon their only real mobile gaming device.

Need some info about root

Hello guys. As you can see I'm new here. I registered here because my friends and everyone I saw when I got my new phone is to root it man it's good and everything. I sad ok I will check how to root and everything. Everything sent me to this forum. I didn't saw anyone root a phone before so IDK anything about this so I need much help in a simple way / reply .
I have some questions first about rooting:
- Why is this good ? what + I will get from rooting my phone
- Rooting my phone will delete all my data from my phone / SD card ?
- On Xpreria Play will the controls and the " touch joystick " be harmed in some way ?

Most people root their phone to remove bloatware(unused useless apps) to free up memory and speed up their phone... And to install recovery...recovery will give u the ability to flash custom roms... Im not gonna get into how or whatever you can search yourself and fund out how...and it doesn't affect your sd card data or any data on the phone and it won't harm your phone

I downloaded DooMLoRD_v4_ROOT-zergRush-busybox-su.zip and checked everything on the phone the debug and the unknown installed adb drivers and connected the phone. I clicked the runme pressed a key and when it finished the phone rebooted. But I think the phone isn't rooted. It doesn't have Superuser.
Here it is the log that I got in the runme. Help me how to solve this

I don't know of any simpler method. Are you sure you've done all the steps? Extracted the zip to desktop? Allow unkown sources? Are you sure your phone is connected?
Try running the runme file as administrator?
Or as cippi said, try installing superuser and see if it works?
I only rooted very recently thanks to "LordBattleBeard" so don't really have vast knowledge

Lol as it turned out I had to use v3 dunno why but it worked well with the v3 v4 maybe for new something XD. Now the question is what rom should I use I heard that Cyanogen mod 9 is like ICS. But heard that it isn't working very well. Some suggestion ?

I can't really help on that front. I think gingerbread ROMs are better for gaming though

xperia nxt rom OR dixperia 2 OR true ancestor OR ice cream pureness OR gin2jellybean AND much more great roms.
look in development forum and try to find them.
For gaming, i prefer dixperia 2 or xperia nxt.

But don't forget that for some of the roms like cm9 you have to unlock your bootloader

How do I root this thing (Arc S)

Yea sorry, I know there are tons of threads on rooting this stupid thing but I've been trying out so many different ways today and failed that I'm sick of and tired of this stupid piece of crap.
This is my brother's phone, and it's run out of internal memory (seriously 300 mb?), anyway he has like 10 apps installed on the internal memory, these plus all the updates have filled it up. So now I'm trying to root it so I can swap the SD cards (already got him a 32 gig microSD for that).
And oh boy am I sick of this thing, so far I've tried multiple options and none work, and some are too complicated with poor instructions for me to figure out.
Rooting my Galaxy W was so easy and this thing here just makes me hate everything.
Stuff I've tried:

I'm at the end of my wits here, completely frustrated and yea, if this where my phone I would have already smashed it with a hammer.
I really don't have time for this sh*t since I have to study for a big test, so I would appreciate something super simple and fast, like with the Galaxy W.

If you want you can unlock the bootloader (loosing your warranty, of course), and then install a newer version of android up to 4.2.2, which is much more smoother than 2.3.4 and has much more features...

Madness, if you can't figure it out you're either not reading enough or just being lazy. There's about 4 or 5 links in my guide with how to root, add to that the amount of other threads there is, starting a new one means your lazy, because you've read nothing whilst signing up and just want to be spoon fed. Luck for you, there's some willing to do it.

Had you taken a look at my join date and post count you may have noticed how I did not sign up to be spoon fed to root this device. And had you read my post you may have noticed how I stated that I've already rooted the Galaxy W, which is my phone, which was also real easy and straight forward.
I signed up to be able to hit the thanks button for Sir Arco's CM10 ROM, and give feedback should I notice bugs or other problems with it.
All I wanted was to root it without flashing a new ROM, since all my brother wants is more space on his phone, I don't think he'll want to check the forums constantly to check if there's a new version of a ROM out so he can flash it, so unlocking the bootloader and flashing a new ROM would be pretty pointless.

you can try to use the doomlord process, but you will always install a new rom, in that case will upgrade de phone to 4.0.3 and then you will be able to root the phone with de .bat file inside :good:

But you still clearly hadn't read anything whilst signing up, otherwise you wouldn't have started a new thread on something as common as "how do I root". I assume you will have managed it by now?

I did, which is why I apologized for posting another thread like it, there where also no I do I root this in this forum, since apparently I'm the only one who had trouble with the options that are posted in the guide threads.
And no, the doom script did not work, it did say it was successful but the phone remained unrooted. So after a couple more tries (and rectifying the "drivers out of date" error message) I unlocked the bootloader, tried again a couple of times still to no effect. So I want ahead and flashed a new ROM and Kernel. At first my brother wasn't too happy about that but he's starting to like the new ROM.
Man, it was easier flashing android onto the bloody HP Touchpad than this phone.

Help? Rooting Xperia Arc 4.0.2.A.0.42

Hi! Since I'm not allowed to post in the development section yet, I wanted to ask for help regarding my Xperia Arc. It's an LT15i model and is running 2.3.4 GB. I'm completely new to rooting and have been trying all day to find a way to root my arc. I have downloaded things like Android SDK Manager, ADB drivers for my arc, Flashtool etc. But i just don't know how to root properly. When i was downloading doomlords' zergrush exploit. the file appeared as malicious and a trojan horse exploit.c was found, no offense to doomlord. It's just that nothings worked for me. If anyone could help me root my Xperia Arc, especially since my kind of Build Number is rare it would be appreciated.

Turn on USB Debugging, change to mass torage mode, and allow install from unknown sources
Download the software and click root.
No restart needed, your phone gets rooted in seconds
