samsung stock music player not finding/scanning media on memory card - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

this is giving me headaches now. The stock samsung music player is not finding music files on my memory card. i have tried following things:
- the card is FAT32 formatted, i formatted it using phone and moved everything over afterwards using windows explorer.
- applications --> media storage --> clear data
- there is no .nomedia file on my memory card
- mixzing/poweramp works but i want to try to fix this before i have waste money for something that should have been working out of the box.
- also tried using rescan media apps from play store
i am on rogers Galaxy s3, everything stock never rooted or modded.

Have you tried booting into recovery, clear cache and reboot?

I have not however issue solved.
I feel so stupid, there actually was a .nomedia file in the root of sdcard, not sure which app created that but it was created in last couple of days because stock player was working fine couple of days back and I was using ES explorer that had option of hiding linux hidden directories hence it didn't show up before.
I did try using Kies to sync media but didn't try rooting as I read somewhere CWM created .nomedia at root of sdcard

What is "the patch"?
Sent from my T-Mobile G2
This is the patch.. PATCH 1: Bluetooth is fixed, HD 720p Video recording WITH MIC is now working (and playback), and mic apparently works in SOME apps, but not others. Because Virtuous' new kernel is added, screen animations seem jerky, but they get smoother as it settles, and it does seem faster Pictures must be taken with FLASH ON. If they aren't, they will turn out all messed up. The thumbnail will be fine, but when viewing it, it is messed up. Same with looking at it on the computer. I don't know y it happen after I wipe cache and dalvik and flash the patch it turn out like this..

no, clearing data for an app will only erase the settings and data on the app itself.
the only way to erase media on your SD card is by doing it manually through your computer, or by going to settings > storage > erase SD card.
use your recovery, or the v6 supercharger script to fix permissions, they should stick.

I had a similar issue with andromadus test builds. The reason was a file named “.nomedia” (without quotes) in the root folder of my SD card, although I did not create it. This file tells media scanner not to search for media in this folder and its subfolders. Note that this issue persists even after factory reset or after installing a new ROM. If you find this file in the root directory then simply erase it.

phone not showing pics in galleries or playing sounds in apps although file are on SD

Hi all.
Today started a weird problem on my desire (running RSK rom). I have to say that nothing was changed or done to the phone for at least a week other than updates for downloaded apps. Suddenly the galleries (the htc one and the android one) and music programs like winamp or even the gmail and phone don't play the ringtones or music. BUT... the files are still on the SD card and are even working with the same apps like the winamp and galleries if I browse the SD card and pick the file and choose to show or play it. So what the heck is wrong? The files are not corrupted and the access to the SD card is possible through the phone itself.
I tried using SDRefresh or whatever it is called (the SD card refresh app) and it didn't help.
Any advice?
Have you tried this?
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.tristarapps.tools.galleryrefresh
Or maybe delete data and cache for gallery in manage apps. Otherwise backup data and reflash the rom.

It is fixed. As it seem, ROM manager had a bug that placrd nomedia or nodata (forgot the name) in the parent directory when it updated. They fixed the bug and released an update. I deleted the file and everything is back to normal.

Google Music to external sd?

Cant get google music to save all my songs locally, have tried to create a link to the external sd which shows up with my 24gb free, but it always fails and says "cannot download music at this time, will try again later"
Any suggestions?
Are you downloading to your computer and your phone is connected via USB? If so, download it to a folder on your computer, then drag and drop it into the folder you want it to be in on the phone.

You may have too many devices on your account. This happened to me and it wouldn't let me save locally. Just had to go into my account and delete a few old devices. Worked fine after that.

This worked perfectly for me. Let me know if you have any questions or help getting it working. Basically it uses root explorer to create a symlink. Note that the directions will actually delete you google music cache and offline music. So you'll have to recache/download everything. If you don't want to do that you can always copy the files folder to the sd card, then do the clear data, and then create the symlink. Let me know if you need more precise help.

Thanks. It starts to download music then says cant download right now. Any ideas why? The link is created properly.
This whole time it has been getting stuck on a couple songs, currupted files I would assume. All is well now.
So just for reference if I flssh a new rom and create the link I wont have to redownload it all?

How fast is your card? I am using the Sandisk Ultra UHS-I 64gb and had no problems downloading any music. I am unsure why you are getting the error downloading files. When you go into Music and click on 'choose on device music', do you see the free space for your external SD card? If you do it should have worked properly. I've read in other forums that they recommend that you don't let your screen go to sleep when music is downloading. Maybe that's it? I also had this weird bug where music would kind freak out if I started playing a song and then pressed the home button to do other things while listening to music. Like when I went back into the Music app to fast forward, the album art disappeared and the music scroll bar froze. What I ended up doing is rebooting the phone. And that resolved my issue. Maybe a reboot will help you with the downloading problem?
And you are correct, if you flash a new rom, and make the link before you open google music, you shouldn't have to redownload. At least this is my understanding of it. I have yet to try. As soon as Cleanrom w/ Multiwindow comes out, I am going to try it, so i will let you know then. If that doesn't work I have a theory that I will try. Basically, making a link of the entire com.google.android.music folder in the data/data directory. Maybe that will be better cuz there are other files besides the files folder that is created. It's just that the music files are stored there. but it looks like other important files are in there like the database files and others. I have a feeling that I'm gonna need to do this to prevent having to download each time I flash a new rom. I will keep you posted.

Yeah. I have a uhs-1 card. It just hangs on a few songs. The same skmgs that whem I try to stream say they csnt be streamed. So I have been deleting them when this happens. I am almost done downloading my 13gb of music, lol.
Please do let us know how the new rom goes.
Edit: May have did it wrong but I updated from CR 2.1 to 3.0 frsh install made the link, but google showed no songs on device. Maybe I will open play music and then make the link after it loads. Next update and see how it goes.

As it turns out, I was right. You need to symlink the entire com.google.android.music fold for it to survive rom flashes. Just symlinking the files folder does save the music files to your external sd card but other needed files like database and what not are still on the internal card and therefore flashing a new rom deletes those essential files. So try symlinking the entire com.google.android.music folder. It worked for me and if you flash a new rom remember to remake the symlink before opening Google Music.
*EDIT*
It appears symlinking the entire com.google.android.music folder only worked temporarily. After a while I noticed my Play Music app just disspeared from my drawer. I had to delete the symlink and copy the folder back over to my internal storage and reboot to get it to come back. Hmm. I think the only thing you can really do is symlink the files folder only so that way the large music files do get saved to your external storage. And anytime you decide you want to reflash your phone, make sure you backup the com.google.android.music folder before you do so. Then flash your rom. Copy that folder back to your internal storage and recreate the symlink for your files folder. That should do the trick.

obb folder taking all my internal storage

I recently flashed cm10.1 on my GS3 and now I've got all my internal storage stuck in the storage/emulated/0/android/obb or storage/emulated/legacy/android/obb locations. Under settings it shows total space 12.05gb, available is 668mb but less than 1/4 of the visual bar is full and accounted for. Sd maid is showing the obb folder is holding 11.39gb but no matter what explorers I use it always appears empty. Anyone know how to free up this spae? I can't find anything anywhere about this. Thank you ion advance.
Edit:
Restoring it doesn't free the space up at all. Even tried restoring my backups and the space remains full.
The obb folder is what holds all of your game data. If you have a lot of games installed, especially ones such as Need for speed, grand theft auto, etc. Go into it and clear out the data for all the games you don't play.
I have zero games installed at all. It shows absolutely no files in the folder both regular and hidden and I cannot do anything to the folder whatsoever. Even a clean wipe won't help
This is all in the CM10.1 thread. It's all user data for different profiles. Format your sd card if you dont like it. Just make sure it's empty.

I have not seen it anywhere. This is all on the internal memory, not the sd card. Everything has stated it's empty but the system storage option in the settings . isn't there some way to force delete this folder?
Page three using the app. I meant internal sd. You can always format it.

there is an xposed module that can fix this problem ..found this in google news app on my tablet, very helpfull for gamers.its called OBB to SD...install xposed framework on device as long as you running dalvic on your phone and not ART,cause xposed is not compatiable with ART,my gues is your running dalvic ...google xposed and read ..i see you have allready solved the problem..just adding to the answer, this is if you wanted to keep the files, for games..it moves all the files to the external storage, just make sure you get a large sd card..i like games,so i really find this mod helpful, also store my games on my 64 gig external storage
workaround and I thought it would be a nice idea to write it here.
I came to the counclusion that if I did a fresh new reset factory and installing a large mount of files in the internal storage's obb folder it ended up being deleted after rebotting my tablet.
So I decided to do a few steps the next time I reseted my tablet. First, I copied my files using my pc into the SD Card. Then, I installed a random game from Google Play so the tablet could "adapt itself" and install its own obb folder. After that, I installed my apps but not all at once but one at the time and rebooting after every installation for making sure it was all ok.
It concluded not having the error again and after having deleted the random game from the begining my tablet had finally worked.
Hope this idea helps someone having the same problem as I did. Just don't copy all obb files at once, don't copying it directly from the computer but copying them from the SD Card and install some random game for making sure it can at least hold those obb files.
Good luck!
Try Root Explorer and Delete the File from Root Folder

Look in Android/data and check all app folders

Missing songs from Google play music app

Hey I need help, ever since I got my s3 t999 and rooted it a week ago I'm not seeing my songs in the Google Play Music app but they show in my files using root explorer, I've tried copying and pasting them to the internal storage but I'm still not seeing them it only shows a few songs I recently downloaded when i have more then 300 songs. Is there a fix for this thanks guys
Where exactly are you putting the songs? In a folder?
I've seen others have this issue, the only way (from what I've read) to fix the issue is to place the songs on the root/main directory on either the SD card or internal storage.

I put them in the music downloads folder in the internal storage where it was on the SD card but they still now showing up, I've tired uninstalling and reinstalling the play music app and even try clearing data and rebooting and still nothing...I will try both solutions @Da Kine and @DocHoliday77 thanks guys will report back when finished
Still not working
What about just putting all of the songs in a folder named music. Then, Uninstall play music, reinstall it, then reboot the device.

Best I can say is to start over clean. Odin flash the root66 firmware, factory reset from stock recovery, then copy your stuff back. Not all at once. Try just a chunk of files at a time and see if you can see them.
Btw, the factory reset will wipe internal storage. So back it up.
If it still won't see it, try temporarily uprooting from SuperSU. I'm wondering if it's a drm issue. Drm protected content won't work if you're rooted.
