Hi
I have a Bell HTC Desire Z. It's unlocked (although I bought it that way so I'm not sure how exactly it was unlocked) and I use it on the Rogers network. I've only had it for about 2 months. My service was alright before, it was never as good as my Blackberry on rogers, but I'd usually have 4 bars in my building. Lately however, it will constantly be switching from 4 bars to 2 or 1 bars or nothing at all. It's started sitting at around 1 bar of service in my building, and at around 3 bars outside, rarely anything higher. It will also stop sending data on a regular basis, or I'll lose 3G completely and I'll have to reboot the phone to get it to come back.
My battery life is also terrible. If I use it to make a phone calls, I'll get maybe about 5 hours of it tops. This is with wifi and bluetooth turned off, and the screen brightness under half. HTC sense is also always freezing on me. Half the time when I try to go to my messages screen it takes it upwards of 3 minutes to load them, and then when I go back to the homescreen the HTC logo appears and then a loading screen comes up. It also lags a lot when I'm switching between screens.
Does anyone know what I could do to fix these problems? Should I root it and throw on a different rom? (I was thinking MIUI). Do I have to switch to a different radio? I'm a total noob with android phones and this whole rooting and modding process, so any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated! I really like this handset, but it has enough problems that I'm tempted to jump ship and go back to Blackberry.
ETA: I'm running Gingerbread 2.3.3, if that makes any difference.
I had fast battery drain too, I switched to the ROM in this thread, and battery life is now AMAZING
use SuperWipeG2(+) and Guhl's EFS GPS fix available here before flashing G-lite
PS - you need to be rooted via the wiki before attempting any new ROM installation, as detailed here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=HTC_Vision
also you will lose HTC Sense, but you will gain amazing speed of everything and the phone working better than any smartphone!
thank you for not telling the OP to try a new radio!! you are the first person I have pushed the thaks button for lol
Hi there,
i just got my new Nexus and i'm a little upset about how it behaves.
before i had the galaxy note, testing it for about 1 week. i was very happy with the notes connectivity (GSM / HSPA+ / WiFi) and its really great screen.
however, it was just to big to operate it with one hand and didn't do it for me so i switched to the nexus. Now to the problems i'm faceing:
- GSM / HSPA+ seems to keep switching all the time for no reason? Didn't have that problem with the note tought.
- With the Galaxy Note i had a H+ inducator telling me i'm on HSPA+ and i had like HSPA+ nearly all the time. now i only (at best) get a H indicator. I checked if i'm owning the GSM & HSPA+ version and since the device name is "yakju" i'm quite sure i got it. Is the indicator missing because there simply is no indicator for HSPA+ on the nexus or is it missing because i'm not getting a HSPA+ connection? What could cause this?
- The connection quality of the nexsus seems very poor compared to the galaxy note. can anybody verify that or is it only me haveing troubles? Example: i allways had bad connection within my kitchen (Desire HD previously). I even replaced my SIM with no luck. With the Note ALL MY CONNECTION PROBLEMS were just gone! Cristal-clear calls, no interruptions (even thought the signal indicator was showing only 1-2 bars out of 4)
- The AMOLED Display of the nexsus is not nearly as sharp as the notes one. Also, when pulling the brightness level down to about 20% i get "smudge" on the screen
- when i use the ICS Live wallpaper my desktop starts lagging when i rotate between the views. is that normal? i had the official ICS live wallpaper on the desire HD, which had only one core, and it didn't lag at all (even with particles turned up to lot higher values then the default)
- Yesterday my Nexus just turned off (I'm not talking about the reboot bug, which i also haved faced like 5 times allready) and for like 1 hour i was unable to turn it on. I tried to remove the battery for like 5 minutes, putting it back in, plugging the charger in and trying to boot the device: no reaction, just nothing! After like 30 tries it suddenly just booted again, DOH!
- even thought as far as i know ICS 4.0.4 has been rolled out allready, i still got no update pushed to my phone (still on 4.0.1 ITL41D). is that normal?
Could anybody please help me to find out if that's normal? I still could replace my Nexus if its broken.
P.s.: I'm on the T-mobile net, germany.
Upgrade to 4.0.4, this will solve your issues. If you don't want to wait for it to be pushed to your phone search on the forum for a 'how to'.
Its just you.... I don't have these problems.. my nexus just shut it self down twice...everything else is perfect... the connextiom issue is odd... because I seem to get full signal everywhere except in the bathroom
Sent from my Samsung GNexus <3
first off, thanks for the answers so far.
manual update to 4.0.4 would need rooting, which voilates waranty.
so i have to wait till it comes over the air. (thought, i'm on 4.0.2 since about 2 hours now. no noticeable improovements.)
what i found out so far is that i'm currently on HSPA at best (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=7893188&postcount=10 HSPA:11 indicator) which is shown by a H indicator at the notification bar.
however, i didn't see H+ indicator.
so: looking at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Galaxy_Nexus the Nexus does have HSPA+. Looking at https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Galaxy_Nexus is sais it dosn't have!
Whats right? Is there a version without HSPA+?
What about the other problems i'm faceing:
- low GSM / HSDPA connectivity, continious switching between modes
- low performance when using the official ICS wallpaper (even thought benchmarks say everything's fine with the device itself, the wallpaper has a visible lag compared to "static" wallpapers)
would be great you guys could provide me bit more feedback if its just me so i can decide if i want to replace my nexus with a new one.
Hey,
Before carrying on I am fully rooted which may be why I don't have your Issues.
Signal wise I have noticed that the galaxy nexus' signal is slightly weaker compared to some of the other phones I have owned more noticeably poor and voice call quality is good. Perhaps a signal check in your area or call your service provider to see if they can run a signal diagnostic on your handset to see if anything faulty.
As for h+ I did a little Google of this and found another xda forum post. From what I can see there is no + symbol on the nexus and everyone gets just the H symbol.
As for your lag I agree certain ones will create slower scrolling however that's only crazy cpu intensive wallpapers. The ones he phone came with and nexus revamped etc create no Lagg for me.
Maybe your having a little more issues with your handset than I am, I know there has been a lot of issues but as people have said they are solved with the updates. Maybe look at rooting? Generally speaking it gets rid of all issues and you can always flash back to stock if needs be?

did that already. about 20KM around me i got 100% GSM, UMTS, HSDPA and even LTE coverage. Also like i said before: the galaxy note was like 100% better in terms of signal strenght and voice quallity.
any infos about the signal switching issue i got or does anyone know how the nexus switching algorithm works? i read that it only turns on HSPA+ when loading much data and switchs back down to UMTS / HSDPA later on, to save energy.
does it behave like this for GSM / HSDPA / UMTS transitions as well?
in generell i got like -100dB signal with my nexus here at my place. with the note i had like -70 up to like -80dB (so yeah, its really like 100-150% worse in terms of signal strength)

but does it show HSPA:11 or HSPA:13 within the settings --> info --> signal info? HSPA:11 (what i get) is not HSPA+ as far as i can tell.

well "lag" might be miss leading. the scrolling is a lot "SLOWER". when i scroll with a static wall in the back i get nearly instand feedback. using the ICS wallpaper there is a feedback gap of about 2,5 - 5 ms AND the transitions are not that smooth (looks like way less FPS, but to realize that it would meen that the FPS drop down to below 24FPS or atleast down to 30FPS)

hmm is it possible to flash back to stock? the only way i found to flash roms manually is always using the CWM bootloader, but how to get rid of the CWM if i want to go back to stock later on?
maybe i just didn't find it and there is a way to load the 4.0.4 rom using the official bootloader (which i would perfer)
Honestly the only way for you to attempt to solve any of these issues is to root. If you are not willing then there is not a whole lot of advice anyone can give.
You can easily flash back to 100% stock if you needed to. People do all the time for warranty replacement. Some unethically, but that's a different conversation. The point is you can.
You have to decide whether or not to unlock the bootloader and root. If not, your only option is to replace it. If your willing then its already been said what you should try.

Hope you can get it worked out.

yeh thats not the problem. i would root for sure if i know the problems i got are solved.
i'm just trying to figure out if its a hardware bug / manufacturing error and if it makes sense to replace it.
repleaceing means like waiting 1 week till the new one arrives + it dosn't mean that the new one will not have other bugs which i've seen here in the forums (AMOLED display bugs for example)

Do you use a cellphone case?
Because with the case I use, I don't get any signal here at all ... without the case I get better signal than I ever had before in my flat.
Also you could try flashing another radio.
Maybe its a tower issue.

just one small insight for the op: rooting violates warranty? LOL. You don't know what you're talking about. Nope, even with locked bootloaders it's possible to root some ics versions (up to 4.0.3). Hell, you can unlock and relock the bootloader (which allows for custom roms) by using fastboot, which doesn't phone home in any way. You don't loose your warranty on a nexus phone, unless you manage to **** up the only way available to fully recover it (usb, volume rocker, power button) which is through fastboot.
change radios. your NOTE was not running ICS, and it's a SAMSUNG phone, which surely has tweaked UI/interface/radio etc. It could even be showing full strenght when it's not at full strenght, for all we know.. -70dBm NOTE, -100dBm Nexus - and you say it's 100%/150% difference? are you sure?
return the phone if you feel it's not working for you and your area of residence.

thats right, but the nexus is also manufactured by samsung so they provide the drivers, don't they?
about the dB: i forgot, we're talking about dBm here so 3dB should be like 100% drop / gain.
so no, i'm not sure anymore. but as far as i remember when i check the note it had about 80dB while the nexus is around 95-105dB.
anyway, are there any better radios for the nexus t-mobile germany ATM?
i would love to try them out.

i dont have any cellphone case except a display protection. i never dropped a phone in the past 5 years so i see no point in cases.
well, searching the web for the last 4 hours i decided to send my nexus back and buy another phone.
it seems there are alot of people out there haveing poor signal. updateing to other roms or radios didnt fix their problems.
one guy even sais he had 3 galaxy nexus and very poor signal (-107dBm) compared to his razzor maxx (-80dBm) with all of the nexus'.
seems to be a hardware problem. since my desire HD sucked in terms of radio too and i really dont need a phone that's unable to call i'll send it back.
after all i know its not me (galaxy note worked like a charm - so no provider and location issue) and its not the rom / radio. after searching the web i'm very sure its not "only my device".
maybe the guys saying they got no problems got a (rare?) working manufacturing batch or are on LTE (which i'm not).
the nexus signal just seems to be poor. and i think no update's gonna change that.
so i send it back and will grap the galaxy SIII when it's released within the next weeks. till then i'll use my nokia e65, which is like 100 years old but atleast has signal.

I am on T-Mobile Germany and as said, better signal than any other phone I ever had. (iPhone, Nokia, Motorola)
UGLA4 gave me the best result so far
So for a year ive had the International Galaxy Nexus YAKJU that i bought off a guy on craigslist.
It seems that i miss alot of calls and i notice sometimes when i turn my phone on the signals are grey for a little bit, then turn blue. Also it will have no bars (still in service apparently just no bars) And then when a split second when the screen is on, the bars quickly appear. I dont know if im just crazy, and ATT sucks. Or if the couple drops that occured on the phone could of possible screwed up the radio or whatever affects reception. Another thing that i find weird, is after updating to JB, my phones top back corner by the camera gets super hot when the phone is being used.
Ive already tried a brand new sim card and multiple wipes\roms\stock etc. Another thing is i dont get anywhere near the screen on\battery life that i see other people using the same ROM\Kernel setups. So i ended up just purchasing a new Google Play Store GNEX online.
Im planning on comparing the differences in signal strength and battery life of the two phones.
My question for you guys is do you reccomend i root and flash a custom rom right away on the new nexus, or do you think that will alter my results?
If you're going to compare the two then they should both be stock. If you have a custom rom on one then things could be broken in that rom and definitely alter your results.

I've found that the signal bar takes longer to update the amount of bars you have when your on the lock screen vs. the home screen. Although for me it hasn't affected mg calls and have not missed any calls.

I personally am a little let down with my S3. It may be fast but has some minor issues.. My power button gets stuck if I press it at the wrong angle in the lower area and the power button squeaks sometimes. Then some keyboard lag randomly isn't the best. The quadrant scores vary from time to time. But it does work well besides that and I feel is one of the best phones out there. Anyone having some similar issues? and What do you guys think about the s3?
And I'm sorry if there is a post for this already. I'm using the xda app and the search doesn't work well.
You may want to have sprint check out your phone and either fix it for you or replace. I've had zero issues with the power button. As nice as the phone is, you shouldn't have to deal with the button squeaking or sticking.
My home button has been solid since I got it. Has a nice click to it. As for keyboard lag and varying quadrant scores, those may be attributed to the same problem. When I was running stock I'd get the same problems too. Once I rooted and installed NoFrillsCPU Control I enabled "prevent changes from other apps" and haven't had any lag since. I think it still clocks down the CPU when it runs too hot though.
Wouldnt i be charged? and its my power button. not home.

You shouldn't be if you have TEP. But if anything it should be covered under the manufacturers warranty, as long as they can replicate it.

Agreed. This is the first phone I haven't felt compelled to root. It's been great right out of the box.
By far, the best phone I've ever had. I've had it for over a month now and I still have trouble putting it down.
i have 2..my 1st(white1) works very well...my 2nd works very well however it has a power button issue..it is almost flush to the phone..it works and is responsive but sometimes i have to hit it twice and pull it back out..(the 2nd is blue)
I haven't been able to get the greatest battery life out of it. Seems to drain a few percent while idle. On my EVO LTE that things battery life was ridiculous good! I see some reloading too if I am in an app and then back out; more like a quick flash like a quarter of a second where everything disappears then reappears real fast. LI13 stock rooted is my best battery life so far - 58% right now 14 hrs - 1hr16min screen on. I get some 3G reload too at times where it'll say preparing network while loading a webpage or app etc. Looking forward to LTE cause 3G is pathetic and Jellybean, and Myn's Warm Rom!
Best phone I ever had. Solid and fast. I only miss my slide out keyboard from my Epic.
My best phone ever. No hardware issues at all, great battery life, good response, design, etc. Now just hoping we get JB in timely fashion and should make the device even better.
Personally, can't stand touchwiz, but love Samsung hardware and how much easier it is to root and put stock on. Unlike HTC, Sammy actually releases source. Haven't had any issues with this device, I do like it. I gotta say though, I did like new sense on the evo 4g LTE, but sold the phone due to such horrible multitasking and development being a step behind.
I would end up selling this one if cm10 wasn't out though. Just wouldn't be able to use touchwiz lol. Not to say that touchwiz sucks, I just do not like it, personal preference.

I've been thinking hard and long about this the past could of weeks since the Note 2 rumors/announcement. I believe I'll be getting the S3 as I don't need a screen as large as the Note 2 will have and from my comparisons of the original Note vs the S3, I feel that the S3 feels better in the hand. Well, that and I have my Nexus 7 with me everywhere.
I am really enjoying my phone. Best one yet on android. It was funny comparing my s3 to iPhone 5. Oh they try so hard yet cant come close to our coolness. Its like that one cousin or distant family member thats always showing off Lol. Only issue i found when upgrading to latest sprint built, my battery doesn't hold as much. Anyone else have an issue?

Yeah i can say im very satisfied overall, other then 1 minor issue which i can live with by rooting is that u cant transfer any of ure files to ext sd because of that darn ics sammy crap they pulled. Button works great no problems there with getting stuck or any squeaks. as ufor ure quadrant scores, scores arent always accurate plus score level doesnt mean a thing at all nor should it matter, it doesnt tell u anything nor its gonna prove anything....now why do u get random socres, its because ure GS3 is throttling back and forth. why is it doing that, all GS3 phones do that even the GS2 phone did that as well, is something that sammy did in order to prevent the phone from overheating because of the extra power its packing and to give u a better battery life without loosing much of the speed its giving u. now there are ways u can stop the throttling and have full power but i havent found it yet. the lag even if the phone where to throttle u should experience any lag, i havent atleast so yeah u might wanna take it in for inspection. i rooted only because of increase battery life and ofcourse to make my 64 gb ultra mobile class 10 microsd into an internal memory for my phone it worked like a charm. i believe the galaxy S3 is the best thing ever happen since the galaxy S came out.
TAKE THAT APPLE URE PHONE SUCKS. LOL
I am completely satisfied with the Gs3 and have had no problems after rooting it. Had a few minor complaints with the stock ROM but the phone itself was awesome.

jellybean with lte perfect. camera in low light isn't the greatest but I'm not complaining daylight pictures more than make up for this minor imperfection Samsung finally nailed it. quad core would have been good but after seeing the comparisons between the international version and ours i think we came out on top a s4 chip faster then tegra3, 2 gigs of ram + Lte. If there's any lag custom roms solve everything.

I moved to a Moto Photon 4G after getting fed up with the E4GT not lasting through the afternoon on a full charge ever since ICS first came out. Photons cannot be flashed without losing 4G, so I am stuck on GB and sick of it. Fow what it's worth, the Moto gets much better signal in places my three Samsungs (NS4g, E4GT, SGSIII) never could, and battery lasts about two days. I think that the Samsung models just sh!t themselves when they lose or get a weak signal, and Moto just makes a better radio. If I could flash this thing I probably wouldnt upgrade for years.
Anyway, just coming back here to check in and see if it's worth moving back to the E4GT.
Has anyone who HAD major battery problems seen any improvement in the last few months with the latest ROMs and kernels? Searching only reveals posts like "battery life is great" with little to back it up. Spent all last summer getting sucked into every rom, none made a difference with battery.
Well that is interesting.
My buddie got his first smartphone about a year ago, whenever the photon first came out. He had me help him pick out a phone, i saw good reviews about the photon so we went with it. All i can say is, out off all the phones ive ever used over the past 5-6 years, including iphone, evo4g, vibrant 4g, facinate, g2x, g2, sensation, mytouch3g, and this one, the photon was the absolute worst experience with a smartphone. ever.
I think that all phones are different and some people just have bad luck with phones. I personaly have never had a phone i had to replace due to manufacturing defects. Except the evo.(knock on wood) It was a good phone, but at the same time it was a bit of a joke too. Id go with the s2. I just got one. Its great
Well, thanks for the reply, but that doesn't really answer my question. I did go with the s2, and it WAS great, until ICS. It doesn't sound as though you have battery issues. I can charge the thing all night, and for another 45 minutes commuting the car, and it will still be dead by 2pm. Sprint even gave me a new battery. I think I gave up on it around FK23 or so.
The other thing I have noticed is that 3G is positively awful in my area (cincinnati) to the point of being useless. I wonder if that has anything to do with it, maybe when it loses 4G it tries to keep going using 3G, and can't, but sucks the battery dry trying. Maybe there's a way to tell it to shut things down unless it has 4G or wifi.
Well then i guess it depends on the rom. It seems all the new 4.2.2 roms have better battery life. But a low signal and the fact that you have 4g on all day is definitely the cause. I have the same problem with sprints coverage. But yes the new roms have definitely helped.
There are some apps in the market that do similar things. Try tasker or juice defender
My battery performance has been improved so much that my car battery was dead one night and I was able to use my Epic to get my car started.

Regardless of rom turn off 4g, WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS when not in use. Try a jellybean leak next. I ran the GA10 jellybean leak for about a month before I got bored and moved on. Battery life averaged 24 hours with a screen on time of 2-3 hours. Calls and light bluetooth streaming were also daily activities.
tried all those old tricks 1000x over from july to october when i gave up. turning off 4G literally means no data in downtown cincinnati, it gets about 15kbps on 3G. Wifi not an option.
when we get LTE, i will have more options, but sprint hasnt made a peep about ohio and we were among the first to get wimax, so I bet thats a least a year off.
i will try a newer rom for giggles. i have read through a few, nothing jumping out. all i really care about is de-bloating, all suggestions welcome.
Wimax eats battery like a fat kid in a bakery. If you arent using the device turn off all mobile data of you can't get 3g between wimax running and 3g searching your battery will die in just a few hours. Just put a 4g and mobile data widget on your homescreen or use widgetsoid and put em in the noti panel and turn em off when you turn your screen off. Turn your sync times to 1-4 hours instead of push and watch your battery last all day.
I like to break stuff!

How did you jumpstart the car with the battery? did u carefully hold the red and black connectors to the battery? LOL
not true with the photon. i can leave everything on and get 10-12 hours out of it. maybe that's GB vs ICS/JB more than samsung vs moto, but the point is the same. never mind, sounds like there won't be anything for the s2 that doesn't require massive amounts of hoop jumping.

No dummy , I called triple A, the guy showed up and gave my car a boost.
Lolololo!!! (I was looking online for a mini USB/jumper cable adapter, but had no luck. )
By the way I have been on stock/rooted jellybean since it appeared and with fl 16 kernel I get comparable battery life to GB, and great sleep when not in use. Currently on GB08.

not true with the photon. i can leave everything on and get 10-12 hours out of it. maybe that's GB vs ICS/JB more than samsung vs moto, but the point is the same. never mind, sounds like there won't be anything for the s2 that doesn't require massive amounts of hoop jumping.

The photon only lasts that long because it suspends the mobile networks when the screen is off and only wakes them up every 30 mins to sync so basically its doing exactly what I told you to do. My wife has that POS phone

Hell you could use tasker or juice defender to automate the network suspension when the phones off if you're too lazy to do it manually.
