Is there any possibility of increasing the internal memory? - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Hi I just had a thought that can the 16gb internal memory can be increased to 32gb or more. After all its a hardware. So can the memory be replaced by a higher capacity memory chip? Any computer engineers around pls share ur thoughts on this.

well if you good with a soldering iron and can remove the chip without damaging the board then sure.....go for it

you would have to solder the chip off and resolder a new chip that fits exactly where the old one did.
(basically the answer is no, not easily)

exactly, you'd need a soldering Iron, exacto knife, and a chip by the same manufacturer and the same pin count and they need to be in the same positions

Oh so that means it will totally ruin my phone.. I didn't knew soldering iron and all other stuff would be needed. I'll be happy with my 16 GB

its not a like a desktop where the RAM is chips that you can insert into a slot. Stuff in a phone is soldered on the motherboard and is 1 entire piece. Radios, RAM, CPU, everything is hard connected to the board.

an alternative would be using a usb otg cable to connect a sd card.

Go get the seagate goflex

engineer here, my advice:
don't try it

Use dropbox, google drive, etc if you need more storage space. If it's really an issue, you shouldn't have gotten a Nexus.

They don't make a GSM 16gb Galaxy Nexus? The CDMA version is 32gb.
If you were ambitious, you could try to find a tear down of the CDMA Nexus and find the 32gb part and source it. Then, find a way to remove the 16gb part and solder the 32gb part back on.

If it's anything like the ns4g, the memory just pops off. No soldering needed. It looks just like a little mini board and has almost same kind of pluggies like a computer.

Is the no sd card a huge down for the nexus?

?
Sent from my ADR6300 using xda premium
I really haven't noticed. Everything still works ( nandroid backups, titanium) just like any other android phone.
Its a virtual sd card. I was also worried I'd miss a real one. But it's a non issue for me. Fwiw.
Sent from my iPad 2 using Tapatalk
Just sucks not being able to pop in your sd card from your old phone and having your stuff right away.. But its easy to move your stuff over.. And it would suck if you damaged your phone and wasn't able to save things. So make sure you back everything up

This is the biggest hit. Many devices that support USB mass storage don't support mtp, like my car.

if you need more than 15 GB of space, then you are out of luck
or in the Verizion version if you need more than 31 GB of space, then you are out of luck
I stream media mostly so it doesn't really matter. I barely use the space except for some games.

Not really. 32 gigs is enough for me. Everything else can be stored in the cloud for when I need it.

Or you can get USB Host
Expandable USB http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1400034 not as convenient... but its there
you could even be "ghetto" and use the expandable USB to a ASUS Transformer or another tablet and then you have some more storage + a on the go charger!
so long as you have unlimited data & don't mind relying on the cloud then its no problem.
I honestly am starting to prefer the lack of SD card. I have the VZW version, so 32gb is a lot of storage to begin with, and the internal memory is faster than the cheaper SD cards. Also, USB works fine for me.

Android File Transfer works great for me on my MacBook Pro. Give it a try.
Having vzw and obviously 32 gb is cool with me however if it would've been 16 gb it may have been inconvenient not a deal breaker tho
Really not a big deal. I'm sure not every single phone everyone has ever had has the same specs.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA App
Personally no. I have had numerous devices that offered the ability to expand storage. I only used it to expand storage and I've never needed to take advantage of the ability to swap memory cards. The Verizon GN has 32GB which is more than enough space for me.
I sorta felt the same way at first until my buddy explained there was really no need for more gb.
It not like you need to carry all your Harry potter movies with you and if your going to load up your phones with games and movies with more than 16gb you wouldn't be able to consume it in one day anyways.
Its a phone not a house to store your media library. With cloud and all phone app 16gb is plenty
Miss the SD card support.
Would've been able to use a Sd sleeve and micro SD card to transfer photos from my Camera to my phone so I could upload them while I was on my ski trip..
It's not a problem for me. I actually prefer having built in memory. I have unlimited data so storing it in the cloud is no issue for me and tbh, it's a phone not a computer.
SD card is nice for the portability and that it's physically separate from the phone, as far as storage - i think the mass are satisfied with 16/32GB internal storage.
There will always be fringe users who want something insane like 64GB.

Anyone going to get this phone? I'm looking forward to it, especially for the camera. Looks pretty awesome.
Guess no one has any interest in it.
Which generation is the Snapdragon processor? Is Exynos SoC better than this still? No externel SD slot which is a fail for me.

I think its Snapdragon S3, but that's based on the Xperia being S3. Exynos > S3, but if it is S4 than it will be more powerful than even Exynos.

I like the sony tablet S1, so this phone is definitely worth a look, especially with that camera. Need a replacement for my point and shoot anyway. 12.1 MP's with a f/2.4 and a 1900mAH battery is worth a close look
What does f2.4 mean? Is that good?

This is prob more of an Android general thing but I gotta say more space is nice but really a pain in the butt if u ask me. I have a 16g but mostly run 4g ones because the scanning at best is SLOW compared to a basic hard drive. I can only imagine anything beyond 16 being frustratingly unusable for my work habits. 16 really is to tell u the truth. I move a lot of small files around and the bigger the card the longer it takes. Lets just say that's an area I certainly hope will improve in the near future, there's certainly room for it. Til then Ill just deal w it as a nec evil. eb

I totally agree that I'd have liked to see a 32GB option and/or a slot for a microSDXC card, like the Galaxy SIII has. I don't want to depend on cloud storage for my music files. And I'd rather use my own music app rather than the Google Play music player. A 64GB microSDXC card in the GN would be perfect.
As it is, I bought a 64GB flash drive that I mount on my GN via USB OTG and Stickmount. Not ideal, but it works.

Would of?
What the hell does that mean?
Would've, while sounding like "would of" is in fact short for "would have"
Together the two words show timing and intent, but could be used apart:
I would buy.
I have bought.
But the same is not true of your use of the word "of."
I of bought.
Simple mistake based on tricks our ears play on us.

Well states wise, how much they would have sold, if Google had a unified launch of launch product. as i remember the release date from Verizon was foggy at best. Then they offered no way buying in the stateside besides Ebay/Amazon, till whatever exclusivity deal expired with Verizon. Then Google finally offered directly and Sprint got the phone.
I could only imgine that this phone would have sold well, if it had any amount of marketing, and unified launch besides one carrier in the states

You really think it would have sold any more units with 32GB storage? I find that hard to believe. If you choose your phone based on 16GB vs 32GB storage, and are willing to give up having a Nexus because of it, you clearly don't get it. I still have yet to understand why anyone would need that much storage.
And MicroSD sucks. Partitions and UMS are just a pain in the ass. Don't expect Google to ever use them again in a Nexus device.

Nexus 7 16gb is OOS...

Guess Google didn't expect people to pony up the extra $50 for the already limited storage. But that is a good thing. Hopefully we will see more 32gb nexus devices soon.

I have my slew of apps, a few big (250mb or so) ones, and several hundred mb of pics/wallpapers. Other than that I'm using Google Music / Pandora / TuneIn Radio for my music and I'm not one for movies.
I've still got 10.2GB available on the device.
I came from a HTC Desire so I am used to having very little storage (although I loved that people were able to figure out how to make EXT4 partitions make the phone believe it had more internal storage)... I really don't mind the 16GB, it is more than I will ever need. I only keep apps and data for them on the phone so it's not that bad... I have other devices for music/video.
And now back to your regular GALAXY NEXUS programming........

[Q] Please answer this hypothetical question for me (upgrade related)

- You want to upgrade from Xperia Play to a faster phone.
- You DON'T MIND that it will be touch screen-only.
- It must be an Android phone.
- You don't want to pay much so you're OK with let's say a dual-core processor, 1GB of RAM
- Compatibility is important, so you want most of your current Android apps (that work on XPlay) to be compatible with your new phone.
- Should have a decent camera, at least 8Mpx - but this is not SO important.
- "Sony Xperia" line is EXCLUDED (I had some bad xperience with Xperia P)
Which current phone would you choose?
Depends by what you mean by not paying much. The Nexus 4 is relatively cheap isn't it? Taking into account it's specs, it's quite a bargain.
