To install a screen protector or not? - Galaxy S III Accessories

What are the pros and cons of having a screen protector installed in the Galaxy S3? I'm thinking of NOT installing one but am I losing anything?

There are 2 other topics on this on the first page.
Additionally if you can't figure out the pros and cons yourself then I don't know what to tell you.

Install

Get the Spigen ultra clear from Amazon. Picked it up for$13 came with three. Absolutely love it. It doesn't even feel like a protector is on. I have to make sure it doesn't peel off in my pocket haha. But it is very adhesive. Good luck

Not having a screen protector is like having sex with a random woman without a condom.
Because yeah it feels a lot better but you never know if you the one unlucky enough to get messed up.

I thought I'd sit a screen protector out on this phone, and did for about a month..
Then I started noticing micro-marring.
*sigh*
Back to a protector for me.

Pro's and Con's for installing a screen protector... You are kidding right? Its install, unless you want a scratched up dirty nasty screen. :banghead:

S3 here and I can say my screen is "virgin" LOL. I don't even touched after I got it out of the box, I just removed that factory screen protector and applied the other one, not because of scratches possibility but to avoid the fingerprints (and make me clean it before applying the screen protector). Gorilla glass, but still...As in the post above me... The protector is a condom. Even if you know that the girls isn't in her fertile period, it's still safer to use a condom, right?

To use screen protector or not???

So I'm debating on whether or not I should use a screen protector on my S3. With the new gorilla glass is it necessary?
What are all of you doing??

I think it's personal preference I bought a screen protector and I am using mine. It depends how well you take care of your phone. Get a cheap one off of amazon or eBay and see if you like it

i take care of my phones so i will not be using a protector. I never have. I took my X2 to the extremes once i activated my s3 and it was difficult to actually scratch the screen.
hoping this holds up equally well. I did by a sleeve for the phone though.
At first I didn't plan on using one, but I did end up trying a wet apply protector and I'm liking it ok. The Gorilla glass seems pretty resilient, and there are videos on youtube of people taking keys, razors, knives etc to the screen with no scratches but the last thing you want is a scratched up display.
Come on guys, there has been threads about this

I have a My Touch 4G Slide. I hate the long name.
I have been using it for over a year now and it has a few very slight scratches. It has Gorilla Glass.
Now about the videos on YouTube: They all use metal that is not so sharp. I would like to see how the glass stands up to a single grain of sand, dirt or rock fragment.
I'm a mechanic and work in a rough environment. I get dirt and grease on it all the time but I don't purposely scratch it.
My 4G was a replacement for the G2 I had for almost a year before and did use a Zagg and it got dirty within a month and the free replacements for life cost $6 to ship them.
I'll have my S3 this week and don't plan to use a protector. I don't think that a screen protector can save it from a direct hit. Since the majority of the surface is non screen, I am considering a case to spread out the impact damage if I drop it, which is more likely to break the screen.
My opinion is non scientific and is from limited experience.
The Verizon guy installed one for me and its working fine. I wasn't gonna put one on but I do like it.

I think there are many debait about this, it's up to you, and as said many times gorilla glass is not future proof it will get scratched easily, forget about keys and coins, just get some sand and try it out.
There has been some discussion on this. There are also some threads about individual screen protectors. Look here.

Screen protector?

Just a quick question I would like to know about other note 2 owners..that being are any of yall not using a screen protector? If not are there any scratches on your screen?
Sent from my SPH-L900 using xda app-developers app
Since Gorilla glass came out, I will never use a screen protector again. For my needs it's scratch resistant enough and I really love the screen on these phones. I hate the idea of covering them up to "preserve" them, then trade/sell it and not get to enjoy it as much hah.
That's my opinion on it. I had ET4G for over a year and no real scratches and no screen protector. I will do the same with my Note 2. I keep my phone in my pocket.
I have the cheap sprint clear one on mines. Don't mind it much. This phone is so large that I just don't want to baby it. I have to be very careful with everything in my pocket.
This is coming from a guy whose past three devices were naked without a single mark on them.

Yea having a screen protector is cool just to be on the safe side dont want any scratches that are noticed when watching vids..lol 3 naked ..yu freakk yu hahaha

I have a cheap ebay one on mine. I dont want to take any chances.
will be soon. i like anti-glare ones, though. great for keeping of fingerprints.
I dont really like the anti glare one cause it takes away the clarity of the 720 hd display imo..but I just noticed that my s pen is scratching my screen protecting pretty badly lol ...
Sent from my SPH-L900 using xda app-developers app
I think the anti-glare ones make the s pen not work right.

Whos using with no screen protector

So I was wondering if Amy of you use this phone with no screen protector and how the screen looks after x amount of time with normal use?

I have had my phone for about 8 months and never had a screen protector on it.. I can't detect one single scratch..
Same here. I don't like screen protectors. I've had this phone 7-12 months now and while my silver rim has scuffs on it, my screen is immaculate. No hairline scratches. It's absolutely mint. I have an OCD with my device screens though. There's always an LCD screen cleaner and microfiber cloth within arms reach of me. I really, really hate dirty mucked up screens lol

Everyone enjoys not having a screen protector..
Until they drop their phone and it gets scratched
I always use one. They cost 3 dollars on ebay for 6 with free shipping. Its worthed

No screen scratches, bezel is all torn up though.

same here, ive had mine just about a year now. the bezel has some nicks in it.. but even a screen protector wont prevent that. I even ditched my case after about a week or so.. its much less bulky then
Yea my silver part is wearing down a little from the case I'm using. I've been debating not using a screen protector. I have one left, i just get tired of them scratching up and dulling the screen. Then on look at my kindle (I know it has gorrila glass) with no case or screen protection and its amazingly clean. And clear. I'm always on the fence about it

I have used screen protectors before for this phone and been without for a while too. And to tell you the truth only when I have a screen protector you can see scratches from everyday use and from my jeans pockets. And when its without I dont see one single scratch
Not bad
I used mine for about a month without a screen protector. I just got Zagg, and I like the feel a lot better.

I've had my Hercules without a protector for near a year. The screen is pristine, no scratches! I love the glass used on this phone. It can get oily but nothing a microfiber cloth can't wipe clean.
I've had the phone since February with no screen protector. Finally dropped it 2 weeks ago, went skidding face down about 3 feet across an asphalt lot. The bezel is scratched up pretty good, but the glass has no scratches at all.
I generally don't use a screen protector but with this phone I decided to. My HTC Glacier I didn't use one and after a year it had no scratches. The reason I did use one with this phone is to retain its value so I can resell and get a better phone when I get sick of it.
Sand scratches the glass so don't think its 100% safe to go without one.
I just put my last screen protector on here. I got a hair scratch down where the hardware keys are. I used to use those cut to fit ones and they would never cover those buttons. Now the one I have is fitted. I probably won't buy any more

I have had mine for 9 or 10 months and the screen looks great, my bezel was dented and such so I tapped of my screen, took a dremel to it and took off the outer coating, now I have an all white s2 with a matte black bezel, with an awesome screen... Pretty bad ass

Hmmm don't know

Screen Protectors! Why do you use them?

s3s have gorilla glass screens I thought and they have protection to scratches but I see lots of people using these screen protectors. Why do people buying it? OR may I wrong?
Scratch resistant isn't the same as scratch proof.
I've always used protection on my touchscreen devices and don't encounter any functional differences.
All it takes...
My last daily driver had gorilla glass, as does my new S3. I'll be using a protector on my new one as soon as I can get one. I went without for the second half of my last phone's life. Granted, I had no shattering, cracking, or other screen failure, but I definitely acquired a few scratches.
After that first scratch, you'll never look at that screen the same again. All it takes is one fall or one coin or key in a pocket. I like having Gorilla Glass as an extra layer of protection, but it doesn't negate the necessity of redundancy when it comes to protection.
There's a huge thread on this. Can't remember the title tho

I honestly love my screen to be naked. I just take extremely good care of my phone. The scratches on my screen are very minimal. They are small from sand in my pocket and such. Never dropped the phone since I got it about 6 months ago.
Phone always has a dedicated pocket and I don't put anything else in there. I occasionally use a case, but not too often, though when I use my ZeroLemon 7000mah the case is of course on. Still no Screen Protector. Nothing beats the feel of glass.

What brand is it? I tried one a while ago and it made the screen not recognize half of my touches, do you have any issues like that with yours?
I had one of the glass screen protectors and loved it but I broke it. You can get them on eBay for less than $10 now and they are well worth it. I repair phones and happened to have a replacement glass for a s3 and put it on top of the my phone and everything worked except the proximity sensor. I think because of the protective film. I ordered another replacement glass ($6) and I am going to try to use it as a screen protector. Just have to figure out how to get it to stick.

It's a Holy Grail from Sir Lancelot's Armor. It registers everything exactly as it would naked, it's just a couple of millimeters thicker.
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda app-developers app
I personally use a Zagg Invisishield, but plan to buy a Sir Lancelots Holy Grail soon. I use them just because I prefer not to have a scratched screen. I have seen many S3's just covered in scratches. Granted, they were owned by people who were prone to dropping their phone, but it does happen. The S3 screen is scratch resistant and tempered, but that still means it can scratch and break.
I've had a screen protector on my s3 since the first day I got it. Just a week ago, I got pretty much fed up with the screen protectors always scratching and getting really oily. Took it off and omg the screen is so smooth. So far my screen has no scratches.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using xda app-developers app
Despite what they say about Gorilla Glass, its still possible to scratch it! Have some bad experience of it myself.
I've been using the same skin from xoskins.com for my s3 since the release day. No scratches, no orange peel look to it, no curling edges. Love it. Gorilla glass might be tough but scratches can happen, and this skin prevents it.
I use screen protector cuz i honestly feel like it helps support the glass from shattering

Like a car windshield... except for your phone
My idea of using a replacement glass as a screen protector worked! Just used adhesive strips to secure the glass to the phone and everything works like it should. Now my amber brown s3 is pebble blue.

Warning about Zagg (and screen protectors in general) on Galaxy S3

Removed my zagg protector today and noticed the glue from the shield completely took off the oleophobic coating. Now the glass isn't as smooth and attracts fingerprints even more. Just a warning to those putting on a screen protector, you may actually be damaging the phone.

I can't remember where i saw it but a few months ago i saw the kit online to replace the glass screen coating....oleo whatever.
Maybe find something here http://www.globaldirectparts.com/Samsung-Galaxy-S-III-SGH-i747-AT-T-s/18091.htm
and how to take it apart here http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/search/samsung+galaxy+s3
I use self laminating sheets from Office Max. I Cut to fit and apply. Easy to remove too. They last maybe two weeks, but they do give some protection to the screen and it's super inexpensive since you get so many sheets to a box. They look just fine. I don't think they cling hard enough to remove any coating but I haven't really looked for that.

I took mine off, too, without seeing any negative effects on the screen. I got a tempered glass screen protector and now won't ever use anything else. It feels just like the original glass and protects the phone at the same time.
I like the Zagg stuff. I've had them on all my phones and never had an issue. I have the HD on my GS3 now and had it replaced a couple times, but nothing left on the screen.
ZAGG was pretty good for the iPhones.
Thanks for the heads up on this one. Phew.
Used Armorshield on my Nexus 4.
Probably will do the same for my GS3. :highfive:
