Hey guys, I've noticed that my camera is really grainy whenever I use any other ROM than the official JB ROM.
Anyone else found this to be the case, and is there any way around this? I really do need a functioning camera

Maybe your custom kernel's color setting is what makes you think that pictures look worse? Can you take a picture of a object with custom ROM and another one with stock ROM?
I actually firmly believe I get better camera quality on JB over ICS, but it shouldn't differ ROM to ROM.

I feel that way too, what I think the reasoning is because the way the camera focuses was changed in JB which leads to better focused pictures and a happier me

CM actually uses a modified Camera.apk which includes some extra features. My point is that not all cameras in all ROMs are the same.

Hmmm that could be it actually. I'll take some comparison shots when I have a few free hours to resolve this once and for all. If it's something I'm imagining I'd be somewhat relieved...

K so when I fist got my gnex I could use it with my Bluetooth speakers from a far range I could be like two rooms away and could still here it fine and it would be smooth. That was stock. Now that I'm rooted and running aokp it is horrible. I can't be more than 4 or 5 feet from the speakers without it cutting in and out and being really unusable.... would this be the rom (aokp M5) or the kernel (latest Franco nightly)?

Could be either, especially if AOKP is using the wrong bcmdhd.cal for the device.

You answered your own question. Go back to stock if you need things to work properly. Custom roms are experimental at best, since they introduce all kinds of problems, including app incompatibility, hardware instability and broken features (like voicemail notifications not working).
Good luck.

I would have to agree. Everything's gone south w/ my SGS2 since the ICS update. I have way more blurred photos w/ ICS than I ever did w/ GB. I'm going to look up going back to GB. I've had nothing but issues w/ ICS. My phone is stock as well.
I don't have any photo's really to prove what I'm saying but most of the pics I take in ICS are blurry and out of focus.
I think its the shutter speed or many the camera apk has not benn fully fitted for our phone

I would have to say I am very unimpressed with the photo quality on the s2 with aokp ics. I can't say if it was better on gb because I've only played with ics on the s2, but I have an htc sensation that takes way better pictures at close to mid range. I find the focusing a total pain in the butt. On the htc with ics I can touch to focus so if I'm getting a reflection in the middle of the screen instead of it focusing on what's being reflected I can click on the frame and tell it to focus on what the camera is actually pointed at. I'm trying to take pictures of the sensation to sell it and everything is out of focus when I try to take pictures of the screen because it tries to focus on whatever is being reflected. The reflection shows up great but then the boarder of the screen is out of focus and by a lot.
I'm going to try third party camera apps to see if I can get the touch to focus back but I can't find an option for it in the darksipe aokp stock camera app.
Other than that, at mid to long distance where it focuses properly the pictures are gorgeous.
[EDIT]
In case anyone else was annoyed by this I was able to find a single app that allows you to use touch to focus. It is camera 360. I had some FC's at first but after playing with the settings and fixing permissions it's working great.
Try procapture too, it's actually pretty good for close pictures

I have to go with ICS.
I have a fix for the lagginess in builds from the past week and a half or so. The culprit is the surface flinger library. It is the android compositing system and some changes recently made to it are responsible for the significant lag in recent builds. Most noticeable spot is if you hit the home button if you have the notification drawer down. It becomes extremely laggy without this patch. Scrolling is also less smooth whenever multiple things on the screen are being drawn. This fixes all those issues.
Just flash this in cwm or whatever recovery you choose. Should work on all cm10 builds and cm10 based roms like paranoid android.

I just read that entire thread as well as watched a posted video comparison on it. My verdict from all of that is this doesn't do much and ART fully trumps it as far as performance boost. That is my conclusion on it for the Nexus 5. I would imagine it does nothing on the Galaxy Nexus seeing as we have a completely different chipset.
Not trying to be discouraging, by all means if someone wants to do a thorough testing of this mod and give some feedback on the contrary I will absolutely eat my words, but from all that has been spoken about the mod on that thread It looks like ART is still the better choice.
Thanks for bringing this to everyone's attention though, it's always good to have different options.
