if the root process is available for the vzw galaxy nexus by the time i get home, i will root it instantly. like you said, google wallet is the biggest reason followed by the fact i need to tether. google wallet isn't unsecure, i use it on my nexus s daily and wouldn't give it up for the world.

all you phone junkies should play with your phone at least a week or so stock. just in case there are any hardware problems. methinks with all the people "renting" phones and the nexus having a high profile for modding i wouldn't chance voiding the warranty straight out of the box.

The big security flaw is using your phone on ANY cell phone service. They track who you call, how long your calls are, who you txt, what the txt is, what cell towers you're connected to, when you pay your bill, with what credit card or check, also your name, address, oh and they know your phone number!

Won't be rooting, see no need for it.

i rooted mine on the first day, mostly becouse i want a recovery backup on the stock rom from day 1 with clockwork recovery.
I guess there is some consumer appeal, but really, why buy a Nexus if you have no interest in an unlocked phone? My decision to buy a Nexus was far less about firmware updates than it was about my right to own the hardware that I paid for.
To be honest, I didn't read the thread (shame on me), but these topics puzzle me. To each his own.
Google Wallet has some security risks in general for any device. Recently read the following from droidforums..... http://www.droidforums.net/forum/dr...s-news+(DroidForums.net+News+::+Android+News)

I'll root when CM9 hits beta or if a good stable nightly.
Yes, but so far only to be able to restore app data (ie Angry Birds) from my old phone. I'm totally cool with the built-in ICS disable/freeze feature for the apps I don't want, I think that's an extremely fair compromise over rooting and deleting the apk/so files.
Not too concerned about Wallet yet, we'll see how that pans out if it's something we'll need to root for or just something we can head to the Market and install without any issue. I would like to try it out and have zero confidence that the competing ISIS thing won't completely suck in comparison, so if root is needed, root it is!

If you want a private conversation phones are not the way to go. Back in the day we had to hard tap your line for LE with warrant. Now with CALEA and digital switches they can monitor traffic anywhere anytime w/o warrant.
Sometimes we put lines on speaker all day to monitor for noise. If your neighbor had wet line issue or cross talk we might monitor your line for noise. I worked in a 900 number telephone switch in California we have to check lines for "traffic" or people talking before working on them. It was awkward. Now I can monitor phone calls from my computer. Of coarse I don't unless it is for work I don't want to end up in Guantanamo.
Wow how off topic WTF happened?
I have been trying to find out if it has nfc. Some sites say yes others say no and some say it has the hardware but sprint disabled it because they want us to use their mobile payment instead. So can anyone clarify this for me...

The other US versions of the SGS2 have NFC, not our E4GT.
On those phones the NFC antenna is in the battery. The rest of the hardware is in the phone itself, so we can't get NFC by simply swapping batteries.
I was pretty disappointed by this since Sprint is a Google Wallet partner and all.

I don't really care to much about the mobile payment aspecT of nfc.
I'm more worried that android beam uses nfc and its a huge part of ics. If you guys aren't sure what I'm talking about I believe there is a youtube video. I think NFC will be nice in one regard - electronic receipts. I hate dealing with paper receipts. When I use Wells Fargo ATMs I can have the receipt emailed to me, which is awesome.
Having electronic receipts tied to NFC payments will be great.
I look forward to progress with NFC in 2012.
Too bad the Epic Touch 4G doesn't have it built in, but perhaps there will be an add-on solution like the microSD card as someone mentioned.
If they were smart they'd create a system where you can pay via NFC and have the receipt emailed to you.

Yeah, I would like to have NFC just as much as the next guy, but it'll have to be in my next phone. And let's face it, until the iphone adds NFC, retailers won't pick it up nationwide.
NFC everywhere?
Even if it is everywhere it isn't used much yet. The store employees probably don't know how to use it. Give it time. I am sure when it get more common every smart phone will have NFC. The better question isn't when is our phone getting it, it is when will vending machines get it? No more scratching up change at work for a pop would be awesome.

People just look for reasons to nitpick.
We're all just so programmed to want the international version. Up until now, AT&T, along with other carriers have pretty much destroyed Samsung flagship phones by using the crappy Qualcomm chips for processors. I don't know about you guys but I've always been able to tell the difference. It was either Qualcomm with LTE or Exynos with HSPA+.
Well this time we finally get LTE and Exynos. The only advantage the International version has are getting updates fast. But why would you be on this forum if you don't plan to root and flash custom roms anways???
The radio (at least to me) is completely useless. As another poster said, thats what cars are for lol.

The NFL doesn't allow streaming games online. Means I can't get it on TuneIn Radio, but there is an FM station that plays Bears games. When I'm at work, I can listen on my phone if the FM radio was in it. Not a deal breaker, but it would be nice if the US versions were exactly the same.

I don't get why there are so many "Who cares?" responses on here. Even if you don't use the feature, I'm sure there are some who do.
The point is, the hardware is likely still in there, and for whatever reason, AT&T is explicitly removing a feature.. That should annoy anyone, on principle alone.

My EVO 4G has an FM Radio: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cTjN2IsYnrc which requires wired headphones to act an antenna. Also plugging it into wired external speakers at home works. Honestly I just used it for the first time but it was nice to know I had it just in case (of some kind of emergency etc.). Carriers in the US also are not bundling the Note2 with headphones but Sprint didn't include them with the EVO 4G so that's not likely the excuse either.. Not a dealbreaker for me but carrier intervention is often annoying

I doubt that. The FCC isn't going to block the ability for a device to recieve anything transmitted on a broadcast frequency.
In fact, the GT-N7100 is actually FCC approved for use in the USA (and it includes the FM radio.) Same for the GT-i9300 (international SGS3.)
More likely, it's the carriers who are blocking it. They'd MUCH rather you use paid data allotments for pandora and other internet radio formats. If you simply use a built in FM radio, they don't make as much money. It's not quite "price fixing" - just "feature fixing."
Outside of the US, the carriers don't have as much influence on the phone hardware, and less ability to block these things.

My thoughts exactly. Hopefully someone will find a way to re-enable it. I know I'd use it every now and again.
I agree that it would be nice to have FM radio in my phone, especially after the hurricane that hit the Northeast. What happens when the power is out and even the cell towers are down? My home radio is dead and I don't feel safe sitting in my car during the storm. I'd like to be able to turn on the FM Radio on my phone and hear the local broadcasts to see what's going on.
My EVO 3D has FM Radio, provided something with an unsheilded cord is connected to the headphone jack. My Epic 4G has the FM Chip, but it was disabled in the hardware. I notice most HTC devices didn't get their FM chips disabled, but it looks as though all Samsung FM chips were disconnected or removed.
The carriers block FM radio because they rather you stream music using an app maybe go over you data plan so they can make a little more money off you if you go over.
I remember Some years ago in I had an HTC TouchPro II Windows Mobile phone. It had the hard ware for FM radio but the software to use it was removed. Once the software was installed the FM radio worked.
Not I'm not optimistic that will happen with the Note II. It just goes to show the greedy nature of the industry, that wants to nickle and dime at every turn.

I really, really think its gots nothing to do with Samsung, and everything with TMo. The international S3, Note 2 (note 1?), the Verizon note 2, the sprint note 2 and now the S2 have all got it, or about to get it.
TMobile? Not a word.
Yes it is tmobile its not samsung. I just find it amazing that we cant get an update period and all these old phones are getting it...I mean its just backwards. I understand that it takes time for tmobile to port over updates and what not...but this is stupid.
I mean the note 2 is where multiview CAME from and we dont have it ON OUR NOTE 2'S
Sent from my SGH-T889 using Tapatalk 2
This is getting completely stupid and I'm generally a patient person. I'd still be patient but for the fact that the other carriers have released multiple OTA's while T-Mo can't manage to pump even one out. Hell, it would be cool it they even leaked it so we could unofficially beta if we so desired.
I contacted T-Mo's support on Twitter, and they responded with something like "we are working closely with Samsung, etc and stay tuned."
I reminded them it's not Samsung that's the delay - it's T-Mobile. They conveniently didn't respond.
I'm new to T-Mo and don't like the way things are going so far. WTF is their delay??

1) you should be scared if you are doing something that you aren't supposed to be doing
2) They really can't use any personal information (that's against their privacy policy and if someone did find out, they'd get the **** sued out of them, especially in this litigation-happy country).
3) You can turn it off... which, if you did a simple search on these forums has been posted at least 5 times by now (I've personally seen at least 3 posts about it)
4) The video you posted is by the original "discoverer" of CarrierIQ. The software itself is programmable, meaning we don't know exactly what T-Mobile is collecting, many phone simply have it to note mundane things like signal strength, etc. Also, here's an article on the guy who blew the whistle:
http://www.dailytech.com/Carrier+IQ...hart+Works+for+Tracking+Firm/article23511.htm
As many have known for a while now (it's been almost a year, and no one has died). It's hype and poor implementation by HTC (which has also been discussed on previous "OMG CARRIERIQ" threads).
I'm just tired of the sensationalism that surrounds CarrierIQ.

Hmm, interesting, mine's still checked off, since the day I bought the phone (10/29). I don't think T-Mobile has the power to be able to re-toggle a switch that a user explicitly un-toggled... not to mention this is one phone that has it, imagine having to code that up for all phones and adding it to their system, etc. Even if they did, the information they collect really has nothing to do with you and you should have no worries unless you're doing something "illegal" like tethering your laptop without a hotspot plan, although that's probably caught by their backend servers sniffing your packets using pattern recognition software which is the same software that Google uses to direct ads to you on gmail based on your e-mail contents, but I don't hear many people complaining about that... maybe because it's "free"... (Go here to see the real "price" of Google: https://www.google.com/settings/ads/onweb, it's google's ad preference manager which tells you who Google things you are and what you're interested in, so they can sell that info to advertisers)
Ok my issue with lack of updates is lack of communication. T-Mobile clearly has an agenda for when it plans to release the update. Perhaps one big update turning on LTE, 4.2, etc some have speculated, but to reply something so generic is what's annoying. Finally people this is America's, hell this is planet earth. Do you REALLY think carrier iq is preventing companies and government from seeing or doing anything that they choose? Please don't be so comfortable in your false safety nets.......Lol at removing and disabling carrier iq lol trust if they need to know something, record audio, take pictures from your phone without your knowledge it's been done

I think they are talking about the internatinal s2 and s3 in that article. From what I heard and I could be wrong the international note 2 already has the multiwindow thats how we got it ported over. Everything over here in the good old U.S. of A ( land of the free home of the brave) bulcrap always comes way after the rest of the world. If google went with samsung for there newestr nexus device I would have went that way but I just cant do lg. My first android phoine was the g2x and I lucked out and got one of the good ones but with all the problems and lack of support by LG and tmo left a bad tast in my mouth. BUt I really with samsung would make a AOSP note 2 like the g2x but it will never happen.
The flip side of this is we have some real kick ass devs in the tmo fourm alone and I am sure that the rest of the carriers have them too a phone like this is bound to attact the best of the best. If you look in the dev only sub fourm we have some eleite recongnized devs working together now. So with that and the fact that all the different varents are so close in similarity we will have some real good stuff. Dont worry about what tmo and samsung does we will do what we always do which is do it ourselves. Or i should say the devs will do it themselves people like me will support them in any way possible.
\peace
I spoke to a representative from Samsung today, and a rep from Korea. They said we should be getting the multi window update very very soon. Basically waiting for tmobile to shoot out the OTA.
Check your phones over the next week or so, because it should start coming out.

You guys need to read about an agency called the NSA.
I've got news for you. All of you are being monitored. Every single phone call and text message is analyzed by them and there's not a thing you can do about it.

I've had this phone for a year now. My first signal was good when I got it but soon started havin 0 to 1 bar when all other phones in my household had 4 and 5 I got it warrantied and got a second note II . Now this one is doing the same thing, My reception is crap AGAIN when every other phone around has 4-5 bars.
Note 2 was the phone I really wanted to love. But if a device such as this cant even do well its main design function what good is it ?? I hope they sort out the hardware in the Note 3 .
It might be because it's now using 4g lte instead of regular 4g?
Are all your other phones on the same mobile network type as your note 2? Since the note 2 is one of the select few phones on t-mobile that has lte right now.
You should try speed test in those phones....

Couldn't hurt to try. Modems and other stuff are in the Teshx thread linked below.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=36786363
Hastily spouted for your befuddlement
In my area they are testing 4g LTE so i also get only 1 bar but the speed is pretty good but if i turn of LTE i get full bar with HSPA+ (4g).
Useless thread

Ok so I'm not just trying to slam the poster here, but this kind of mentality just cracks me up! I've been fixing things for a living for around 20 years now and if anything it has taught me that some people are just ridiculous lol. A fundamental hardware flaw because you had 2 devices (out of the millions and MILLIONS made) that got poor reception at your house?! Before you immediately jumped to the conclusion that it has to be a fundamental hardware flaw, did you even try to troubleshoot anything at all first?! Even if you had 100 back to back devices with a LEGITIMATE defect in a row, it is still impossible to then determine that ALL of those manufactured devices are bad, because you are still only talking about 100 of the several MILLION devices made! I'm sorry for the rant but I just had to get that out because that kind of mentality just boggles my mind! It's like when someone buys for example a Dodge vehicle and then it turns out to be a lemon, God forbid they get another or even hear about another Dodge that was a lemon, because that's all the proof they need to determine that ALL Dodge vehicles are crap! (same with Ford, Chevy, and so on) Hell what am I talking about, most people just need the 1 lemon to make up their mind that ALL of them are crap. The FDA's allowed toxin levels for the FOOD WE EAT isn't even that strict for gods sake people! Good Lord! LOL

Well , when I recieved my replacement phone I had 3-4 bars constant for about a year now in the same location I am now getting 0-2 bars for the past couple months. Add that to the fact I have seen SEVERAL users of the SGNII need to warranty their devices for exactly this problem so it seemed plausible.
That being said . I just called T-mobile and apparently central florida where I live as another poster in this thread mentioned is currently being upgraded to LTE. Tmo rep said so although the data network and the cellular network are two separate entities because they operate off the same cell tower work being done to upgrade the DATA network could very well affect the quality of the CELLULAR network.
She said ETA of LTE rollout for central florida market will be sometime in 2013 so 6 months or less.
So anyone in this area experiencing poor reception in the past few months this is more than likely the source and Tmo rep said once the upgrade to LTE is complete and deployed cellular signal ought to be back to normal . :good:
Also I asked since I am running a custom rom will I need to flash the LTE modem for this device since jedi X series doesn't upgrade modem with new release and the Tmo Rep said since the device is already LTE capable there will not need to be any upgrade to a LTE compatible modem . The only thing that needs to be compatible to this device is the SIM card. So if you did a manual trimming of your standar size 3g/4g simcard to get it to fit the Micro SIM slot you may need to upgrade the simcard to an actual micro sim compatible with the LTE. She said one morning I should wake up and my data icon should read LTE without any modification to the device or rom .

Useless post. Pot.....kettle......black
And for the record since a couple posters have commented in this thread what they notice on XDA. I'll chime in with my own observation.
I've noticed alot of self glorifying elitists that may " have been fixing these things for 20 years " That expect the average user to be as knowledgeable as they . To be honest sometimes I am amazed I can figure out how to use Odin to flash recoveries and all the other stuff I have learned how to do pertaining to these devices. That being the case instead of wasting space on threads with your aspersions on another s knowledge and ability , how bout using the omnipotent wisdom you have attained to help educate less knowledgeable users instead of criticizing their skill level.

As long as you have either the MB4 or MD1 modem, you are good to go for LTE.

Well I do appreciate the compliment because I didn't realize that I was an "elitist", but if you go back and re-read the post that you obviously misread, what I said had absolutely nothing to do with whether you had any sort of technical ability at all! It's called common sense ya doof and even though it was frighteningly apparent that you didn't have any from your original post, I appreciate you going out of your way to prove it even more but it's really not necessary. I'm also happy for you because apparently you found a way to justify your idiotic comment by calling your imaginary problem "Solved". Way to go bro I'm totally impressed by how you completely ignored the fact that you made a bone head observation, and then played it off like you solved a major problem! And I'm the elitist in your world huh? What a knucklehead!
Edit: Oh and believe me you're not the only one who is amazed that you were able to figure out Odin!

Just go to settings > about device ... look at baseband version and see if it ends in either MD1 or MB4. If it's not, you can flash modem in teshx thread in stickies in development section... MD1 is the latest.

Mine ends in L4 . So I guess I need to flash a modem after all . Are there any adverse effects of flashing the modem ?
Also do I need the matching kernel to flash this modem??
Thanks for your help by the way .

No adverse effects. I would update modem too. Either the stock one or try ptmr3's SaberKernel, currently 32.2 (what I am using), or any other of your choice from original development section. If you don't like one, it only takes 2 minutes to change... but give it a few days whichever you try.
