How to tell if bootloader is unlocked on GSM Play - Xperia Play Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm looking at buying an Xperia Play on ebay, and I'm trying to find out if the bootloader is unlocked. The seller says it is sim unlocked, but he doesn't speak good English and isn't understanding that I am asking about the bootloader. On my Nexus phone, there's a little padlock on the screen that shows what the unlock state is...does Xperia Play have something similar? Or is there a command I can ask the seller to run to tell me if it is unlocked or not? He just keeps telling me it will work with any GSM carrier.

Sim unlocked = Bootloader unlocked

So, which is it, then?

Try *#*#7378423#*#* (*#*#SERVICE#*#*) in the dial pad. This opens the service menu.
In the service menu go to "Service Info" and then "Configuration". In this menu you will be able to check if your bootloader is unlocked or not.

I think this will only tell you if the bootloader is unlockable or not.
You could use flashtool to check the status, it will say Bootloader unlocked, if it is.
EDIT: *#*#SERVICE#*#* works fine on stock roms.

Thank you both for the replies, that was the answer I needed. If the bootloader isn't listed as unlockable, then it certainly won't be unlocked, and if it is listed as unlockable, I can do it through Sony easily and for free (if it hasn't been done already), so that was the perfect answer.

[Q] Bootloader question.

How do I tell if it's unlocked or not? I went by a tutorial and I'm not sure if I unlocked it or not. As I'm not used to this Fastboot stuff.
Check the service menu and see if it is unlockable type *#*#service#*#* in the dialer

dial from your phone to check status :

service info --> configuration
for me, the best way is via fastboot..

dear gogo,
I've tried that, the service info will tell you "bootloader unlock allowed = yes"
it will not tell you whether your phone is locked or unlocked state!
It will tell you.
Mine is unlocked and says " Bootloader unlocked: Yes "

that means your bootloader is still locked, and you were allowed to unlock it.

Regret for the seeking the clarification again as I don't want to endup in trouble later.

Yes, you can unlock again.
Request the code again and you'll see if they provide it again.

it's ok.
I've tried it.
the unlock code is still the same code you had received before.
the remaining question is whether you sure to unlock it again or not, as standard user doesn't need to do such thing.
bravery comes from experience.
that's it bro.
I think your problem has solved.

For the info...
Bootloader unlocked: Yes
Means fastboot is enabled and the bootloader can be unlocked the official way
Bootloader unlocked: No
Means fastboot is disabled and therefore the bootloader can only be unlocked by other means
The best way for you to check your bootloader status is do identify in s1tool or similar

sim free but locked BL

hi
just got an Xperia S noticed that its sim free but the bootloader unlock statue is not allowed on the service menu, any thoughts guys?
Bootloader and SIM unlock are two entirely different things. SIM unlock just allows the use of different carriers while bootloader unlock allows for changing system files otherwise locked from being accessed or changed and stops the use of fast boot.

I bought it used, I thought as long as it is sim free, it was bought contract free so it should be factory bootloader unlocked. How to enter fastboot mode anyway ?
If bootloader unlocked allowed = no it means you cant unlock it

If it was baught from a mobile carrier , most likely , it had been simlocked and the user either sim-unlocked by himself or from carrier... then it could be bootloader not unlockable... check by entering *#*#7378423#*#*.
im having the same issue... i will call the carrier to see if i can send to hell the warranty a little bit..

[Q] Can i install ROMs to my Locked Bootloader R800x?

Is it possible for me to Install real ROMs to my Xperia Play R800x CDMA with a locked bootloader? I'm not talking about ROMs like Cola6, i mean stuff like AuroraPlay and stuff(Of course for CDMA). I understand i can't install custom kernels with the Locked bootloader and my bootloader can't be unlocked, so are there any ROMs that are possible to be installed to a CDMA XPlay that doesn't need a custom kernel? I would very much appreciate it! Thanks!
As if now the only actual rom tjat can be installed on a locked bootloader (from xperiance) is darkforest 3.0.5 which is verizon 2.3.3 and why can't you unlock the bootloader I got my code for unlocking from sony copied it and used flashtool to unlock my bootloader

I can't unlock my bootloader because the *#*#7378423#*#* menu has the option missing meaning it isn't possible. I wish i could because it would be so much better and i don't understand why some of these phones aren't possible and some are.

To be honest I never read the instructions on the sony site, I do not know what that menu will tell me if I flash a factory firmware. I do know that my R800x has been unlocked. It will not hurt to ignore step 1 there and follow the rest. If it works you have unlocked your bootloader. If not it only took about 5-15 mnutes.
