Stock with mods?

Am pretty new to flashing roms and mods. I've did the streak, captivate, s2 lte, and now just got the nexus.
Was wondering if I can just keep it stock and grab pieces of mods and flash em?
Thanks for any answers

Yes, you can use stock ROM, but you will have to get root access and unlock bootloader anyway. Also probably you will want to flash custom recovery which is very helpfull in cases when flashing some mods goes wrong.

So I can keep stock and just get mods then.... hard to choose with all the roms out there. Thanks for the response. Might just try a rom though cause this nexus starts to slow after after awhile

Mods can not be used on stock odexed ROM, you'll have to flash a Stock deodexed ROM, which isn't 100% factory stock. The ROM will be untouched other than deodexing the system files.
To install an OTA update, you must present the stock recovery on the galaxy

Yes, my bad. On SGS2 we had tons of mods/themes for stock-odexed ROMS. Thanks for correcting me.

Will the mods in the dev section work on stock non deodexed 4.1.1 update?

I've been wanting to get the battery percentage mod on the new jb update. Do these mods only work on custom jb ROMs such as bixies? Or can you flash them to the official stock jb ROM?

it depends.
if the mods were done for a odexed or a deodexed rom.

just fastboot the 4.2.1 factory image.. or flash one of the 4.2.1 ota zips that are posted in the dev section

How do I update to JB 4.1.2 w/o deleting everything?

I'm rooted and running on the first version of jelly bean. Each time I flashed Roms everything is removed off of my phone like apps and such but this time I don't want to delete all that stuff. Not to mention I can't find the 4.1.2 JB stock ROM anywhere in this forum.

You won't lose any data... if you don't wipe the partition.
