I am using stock ICS 4.0.4 (updated to latest), and i am facing problem with album art. I have added to half of my songs on phone album art today (which didn't have any album art), and phone still doesn't recognize them. I tried clearing cache and app data, and deleting and re-copying music and still nothing. Has anyone had simmilar problem?
Thanx in advance!
WARNING: Backup all things that you want: contacts, apps etc.
If you have a root + CWM you can do this:
1. Wipe data/factory reset (which clears all data and resets your phone back to default, this option can be found in the phone without root or CWM)
2. Wipe cache partition (formats the cache, which is like a folder that stores information & data of apps etc.)
(OPTIONAL) Wipe dalvik cache
if you're using iTunes and adding album art from that/or from a folder and adding album art to the music via properties then you should have no problem moving the music into your SD card > music.
Actually i lost root when i updated to 587, but after that i had some problems cause i have removed a lot of stock apps, and it wasn't working properly so i did factory reset. Yesterday i used nice program mp3tag (freeware), and added album art on pretty much every song. I cleared app data in settings>apps and it did manage to read some of the tags, but much of them are just same tag that doesn't fit. (and it is even more anoying than no album art)
It wasnt helpful but thanx anyway, maybe someone else will know whats going on...
Same problem here. Artworks disappear. You should reboot your phone or remove ur music folder, reboot then copy it again by PC. I tried and it worked sometimes.

I have always had problems with album art with the android music player even on my previous phone (htc wildfire). I purchased the app mixzing from the playstore and this works brilliantly. I also tried tagging all the individual tracks using mp3tag but this only worked sometimes. I am currently using a modified stock Rom which uses the walkman player from the Xperia s. This seems to work much better with the individually tagged tracks but still has problems with albumart inside folders.
Hope this is of some help.

Actually that with deleting and re-copying solution is the best for me, cause after that it managed to read some more album arts, but still many are left bad. I did found that many people are having same problem and that there is no good solution to this, its just the shi**y player...

Opening the MP3s in any Windows MP3 player show the album pictures.
Any idea why the original music player in the Desire doesn't do it?
Rooted Desire with R5 rom from Modaco.
I've got a similar issue. I can see 90% of my album art but some are missing despite being present in the folder I've put on my desire!

I had this. I even tried embedding album art in the mp3 and making sure there was a jpg in the same directory. However, the HTC app simply refused to use some no matter what I did.
The solution? I downloaded MixZing from the marketplace. I liked it so much, I upgraded to the non-Ad version.
I couldn't persuade my Desire either.
I embedded all artworks directly into mp3, deleted the albumthumbs directory several times... no luck.
But what is more annoying is that for some mp3s it displays the completely wrong artwork. I opened the mp3 in Winamp, WMP - the artwork is correct. When I play it in Desire the artwork shown is completely different.
PS: Meridian behaves the same way.
Have you tried deleting all the files in the /sd card/albumthumbs folder and rebooting your phone?
I had this issue when I first got the phone, I managed to fix it by clearing out the tags of each album and filling them again, took multiple attempts though.

this worked for me too.
It does work but only if you never add more music. I always seem to get problems with new mp3s added.
And I never understood where does it take the incorrect artwork from.
clear data at Media Store! Thats works fine!
Settings > Applications > Manage applications > Media Storage
then reboot the device...
xdad, your solution works, thanks!
Hi

I installed ICS 4.0.4 .431 (LT18i_4.1.B.0.431_Generic World Greece) a few days ago on my Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc S, It works smooth and nice, except a few small drawbacks, or is it?
First of, The led doesn't seem to be working other than when I turn on the phone or put it on charge.
It doesn't light up when I get sms/mms, facebook, gmail or any other notification. I have checked the settings in every one of these apps to see if I have missed anything, but no. everything is correct in settings. Am I missing something, or is the led not working on 4.0.4 ?
second - "music library empty" ??? WinAMP worked fine on 4.0.3. WinAMP does not work on 4.0.4. All I get is "music library empty". PowerAMP works great. But in PowerAMP I can choose music-directory. Also in "settings when I want to choose a ringtone (MP3) it also say "music library empty". Also this worked fine in 4.0.3. What am I missing ? What am I doing wrong? Both LED and WinAMP worked on 4.0.3 but not on 4.0.4
Anyone else experiencced this "problem" ?!?
Where does 4.0.4 expect to find the music-files? I have my music-files on the sd-card in a directory named "music".
The LED issue is a known problem in the ICS 4.0.4 update. There are talks about an update coming which would fix this problem.
And I can't really help you out with your music issue. I use the stock music app and I have no problems. Uh, try clearing cache and data for WinAmp.

I can't use stock music player due to the issue "music library empty". Not really sure what's causing it.
I thought about wiping cache and dalvik, but since I came from a fresh install, then I didn't bother with that.
Thank you for the info on the LED issue
Go to Settings -> Apps. Find the Music app under ALL. Then wipe data and cache.
Hope it works.

I have the exactly same problem tried everything but music is there and is not there also the same happens with old photos i cannot see them anymore on the gallery they are on sd but not on gallery
Check if you have a .nomedia file in your music folder.
It prevents android from looking for media files in that particular folder. This includes photos, music & videos.
Just delete it and all should be fine.
@daniel090588, the same thing applies to you.

I just found out that the same goes for me. I can't see pictures in my gallery either. I could see 4 pictures. Those four I have taken since I installed this 4.0.4 but none of the other pictures. I searched for them on my SD and they are ALL in the same directory SD/DCIM/100ANDRO but still only able to see the last four pictures taken. However I can see them ALL when I use "QuickPic" A great app to view all your pictures with.
I did a reset on my phone now. Just to see if that helped, and it did.
Now I can see music in stock music player. Also my stock photo gallery is working.
I guess the problem I had came from my titanium backup restore.
I wonder what it could have been ?
Thanks it works

Thanks! It worked for me (CM 7.2 - HTC Chacha). I deleted all the .nomedia files and .nomedia folders.
Also I had to delete them twice.
Go to settings, applications, all
Find the Media Storage app, and clear data.
This deletes everything! artists, albums, playlists. (data still on card)
Plug in, mount usb. Eject. Go back into music, and wait (a lot if you have more than a few tracks.)
Note: If the music app shows no changes, try force stopping the Media Storage app. The app showed no cache or data to clear, but force stopping it then opening the Music app worked for me.

Any feedback?
I had the same problem of media not showing in walkman music app in my Xperia P. I deleted the .nomedia directory and restarted the "media storage" app from the settings and it worked.
I'm hoping someone can figure out where I'm screwing up here. I'm going a little banaynay. Music on my extsd will not appear in any music player.
Galaxy S3, new CM-based ROM installed (Synergy-S3_19Apr13_1622_r484_s). Everything is stock image at the moment, aside from inserting an SD card. To note: I saw this problem on the 5/1 CM 10.1 nightly, as well as on CM 10.1 M3.
The system mounts the SD card (formatted) as /mnt/extsd/ with no errors. I have a few directories on there, one with my Carbon Helium backup data, a /DCIM with photos, and /Music. Album app finds photos and indexes them with no issue. Carbon Helium found the back up data, ESFile Explorer reads/writes to the card with no issue.
So why won't any frigging music apps index the mp3s on this drive? It couldn't be more annoying. I've ensured I don't have any .nomedia files on there, I've killed the Media Storage service, cleared its data, and rebooted the phone to initiate a re-indexing. But it simply isn't reading that directory. Hell, the gallery apps are indexing the album art, but the music apps are blowing it.
The music apps read from the SD just fine on previous ROMS before I tried CM 10.1 M3. For some reason, after that ROM, any subsequent ROMs are evidencing this problem. Did something change with the way music data is cached?
Additionally, I thought the Media Storage service was used for all media, not just music. So why would it properly index the photos and not the music? Do have to symlink this bastard? Can you even do a symlink on a fat32 filesystem (I didn't think you could)...
Any help would be awesome.

Poweramp works. I just installed it, and it nicely asked for me to specify the directories I wanted it to scan. How thoughtful, considering these other apps simply don't . Thanks for that Aerowinder.
I still don't have an explanation for the other apps not seeing the mp3s, which makes this fix a little bittersweet, frankly. But at least I have tunes for the drive later today. Thanks my man.
I HAVE NOT GIVEN UP THE FIGHT heh
I have a few albums where the album art refuses to change no matter which program I use.
Based on some searching I found that if you delete all files in "com.android.providers.media\albumthumbs" that the phone should stop forcing its art on specific albums. However after doing so you also have to change the folder to read-only.
I did this on an old s5 neo and it worked.
However on my current s9 I don't have the option to delete files in this folder. So, I found the folder by connecting my phone to my pc and deleted all the files... but I can't change the permission of the folder either on my phone or pc to read-only, so the album art is still not changing.
Tried a bunch of different apps, and in the apps the art is ok, but in the actual music player it's not.
Is there any work around for this? Or any other way to force the album art to change? Any way to change the folder to read-only?
Thanks!
It seems strange that art wouldn't change. Are you sure there isn't art embedded into the files? Download a music tagger, I recommend Mp3tag if you're on Windows, and open the files in there to see if there's any art embedded. Also make sure there isn't a hidden folder.jpg anywhere. If you can't figure it out maybe upload one of the files and I'll have a look to see if I can find the problem.
Hey sure thanks so much if you could help that'd be great.
Here is one of the files. I just opened it in mp3tag, deleted the album art, added a high quality pic. Yet when I uploaded to my phone it still shows some low quality crap as album art.

I've taken a look and the file appears to be OK. Did you happen to check if the previously embedded pic was low quality? Because if it was you might just need to clear albumthumbs again, then recopy over the album with the high quality art embedded in each file (you might also just be able to put it as folder.jpg in the same folder with no embeds on any files, not certain if that works) and let the cache regenerate.
If that doesn't work then I have a couple more questions - how low quality are you talking (a screenshot would be helpful), and what music player are you using? Because testing the file in Samsung Music looks fine to me. You could also have a look at another music player with an option to ignore mediastore's cached covers (which are usually compressed more) and reads the art directly from the file. There are a bunch available that can do this like Retro, Shuttle, Phonograph, Poweramp, and probably tons more.
I've attached screenshots of what it looks like for me on Retro (with mediastore disabled) and Samsung Music.
Hey no I didn't check the previously embeded pic. I did however clear albumthumbs and then recopied the song, but still didn't work. Don't know what the f is up with this phone lol.
I'm not sure what you mean with the folder.jpg. I'm supposed to name the album art file folder.jpg?
Ya mine doesn't look like that unfortunately. Here's a pic of how mine looks on Samsung music player. Also here's the pic I'm trying to use.

Welp, my last idea apart from trying a different music player is to clear the data of Samsung Music. If that doesn't work, I probably can't help sorry.
By the folder.jpg thing I mean instead of embedding the file in every MP3 on an album, which takes up more space (say your album cover is 700 kilobytes across 10 songs, that's 7 megabytes), you can just put it in the same folder as the files (like the attached image). It could also take priority depending on the app, not sure how Samsung Music handles it.
That's alright thanks so much so far.
How do I clear the data from samsung music?
In terms of putting the album art in the same folder as the files... do I do that on my phone or my computer?

Open Settings, then go to Apps, find and tap on Samsung Music, then tap Storage, and Clear data. And you can do it on either.

Oh man thanks so much... it finally worked. There are still a couple albums which it didn't work for but it worked for most. Maybe clearing albumthumbs again will work.
Also there's another problem, lol. The mini album art at the bottom of the screen shows up as the old one instead of the new one. I'm gonna try clearing albumthumbs and samsung music again and hopefully that fixes it.
Hey so I (or better you) figured it out finally. If you change the album art right before you clear samsung music then after clearing it will show up with the correct album art in all places. Some of the older ones I changed didn't show up, but if I changed them right before clearing they all showed up perfectly.
