Wi-Fi and GPS Keep Engaging - Xperia Arc Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've searched the forum and can't see a solution to this problem.
My wi-fi keeps turning on even though I have switched it off and even if I put the phone in airplane mode, it switches back in.
Also, the GPS constantly tries to engage. The warning pops up which says, "By selecting "Standalone GPS Services", you are enabling access to all location information..." and it has 'disagree' and 'agree' at the end. If I click 'disagree' it goes away then reappears a short time later. If I click 'agree', the GPS goes on.
I have run an virus check which was negative.
I have ICS build 4.1.B.0.587 and it has recently been rooted.
I tried locking wi-fi with some software, but that didn't work.
Any ideas anybody?

if your phone is non-modded (custom kernel, rom etc.) re-install the firmware you're currently using by re-flashing it via flash tool 6 or higher..
if it is modded (root, rom, kernel etc.) re-flash the kernel or change it/re-flash the rom or change it

Thanks MrModMan, I did as you recommended. My phone was rooted, so I downgraded the kernel again (using the LT18i downgrade as I was told that this would be OK on my LT15i by another member), re-rooted using the DooMLorD tool, then flashed the kernel again (using the LT15i ftf for .587 build).
The problem still exists.
I suspected that it may relate to an app which uses GPS/Wi-fi connectivity, maybe Google Maps. I backed up Google maps, then uninstalled using Titanium Backup, but the problem's still there.

Here's an update. I reinstalled the latest version of ICS and have not rooted my phone, The phone is not now reconnecting to wi-fi and the GPS nag screen has stopped appearing, so evidently there is something wrong with the rooting procedure that I used for the .587 build of ICS. I can say that I did follow the procedure outlined on this forum to the letter. Maybe somebody with more technical know-how can determine what the problem is.

[GSM]no data when screen is off, only when using AOSP4.0.3!!!

Hi,
I have a big problem with AOSP 4.0.3. When I flash a ROM with this build, my data connection always get lost/cut, when I switch the screen off. In this time it is not possible to call me or to send me a massage. When wifi is activated, internet data works, but of course calls and massages not!
I really tried all RADIOs. I flashed them via fastboot and CWM. I also tries different bootloaders, don´t no really why.
I completely set my phone back with a stock google img and locked my bootloader and repeated the whole process. But when I flash a ROM with 4.0.3 base, the same problem appears.
When using AOSP 4.0.2 based ROMs everything works fine!
I have no idea what goes wrong, or what to do to fix it. I think the only option is to wait until Google releases an official update.
Has anyone the same problem her? Or does anyone have an explanation?
Thanks.

Arc S random reboots

My Arc S randomly reboots itself, some 2-5 times per day.
I have unlocked bootloader, tried 3 custom kernels (ArcKnight, stock 4.1.A.0.562 and stock 4.1.B.0.431 with CWM) each with 3 different roms (JJ hybrid, Arconium ICS and Mooded ICS 90.3) and still the same thing. Does anyone know if it's kernel issue, software issue or something else?
Only thing I haven't changed from my stock rom is the baseband (64).
Any chance it's hardware problem?
well maybe the battery would have been loose enough to connect and disconnect from the phone
Completely flash back to stock using pcc repair, that's probably the best idea for the moment if you still get it, then try and figure out when it happens I.e. is it when the phones hot, when your jumping around or completely random.

Turn off your phone, take out the battery put it back in and boot the phone
but make sure you've charged the phone to about 50% atleast

i took off the back cover and shook the phone violently, it doesn't reboot so i guess it's not the battery connection.

it reboots completely random, sometimes when sitting on the desk, sometimes in the middle of conversation...the heat is normal for the usage situation (no heat when not using the phone). have to see how to use pcc repair, since i haven't used it. i have stock backup made from CWM recovery after unlocking the bootloader and flashing new kernel. maybe i can restore that backup?

undervolting? governor? i even dunno what those things are I just flashed the kernels that i listed above and used them as they are. i had the same problem with all of them, except when i think a bit, i didn't have problems from the very start. there were some rom versions maybe with combination of the apps that i was using at that time that didnt make my phone reboot. i just dont remember which roms and versions they were

Any result yet lalek?
I'm running Mooded ICS 90.7 on my Arc S, with DoomKernel 2.6.32.9, baseband 72, unlocked bootloader and rooted (obviously), and over the past week or so it's been doing random reboots. Sometimes twice a day, sometimes it will go for a few days.
Apps are Titanium Backup, Link2SD, AVG free, Dolphin HD, Superuser, MX Player, and just the usual banking apps, Angry Birds, Gmail etc. It's only rebooted while sitting on the desk sleeping, never while in use. I've uninstalled apps, found it still random reboots so reinstalled them. I'm starting to think its ROM or kernel related.
You should try re-flashing stock ROM ftf file using Flashtool, I recommend 0.587, see link on my signature for ftf file.
Try that for a few days, I'm sure it will be stable, then you can further customize the ROM.
Also be careful of heat if using some sort of tight-fitting case with the phone.
Thanks
I'll try that tonight!
I do have one of those TPU cases and had the phone pretty hot gaming while charging, but it's never hot when it does the reboot.
It will happen when RAM eaten by running application in background. Uninstalling a few apps will be help.
Sorry for my bad english

hi guys,
same problem here on my Xperia Arc
i have worked out what is causing the issue for me.
i ran a logcat that updated live to a file on my sd card so as soon as the device rebooted, it had logged the very last thing that happened on the device.
turns out the last thing happening was WiFi scanning.
i then turned my WiFi off and for the past 3 days i have not experienced a reboot at all!
when this first happened these are the steps i took.
i completely wiped the device (factory reset, wipe dalvik cache, wipe cache partition, format system)
i then flashed Baseband 77 using flashtool
i then flashed fxp149 using flashtool
i then flashed Baseband 77 libs using CWM
i then flashed AOKP JB M1-R1 ROM using CWM
i then flashed gapps using CWM
i the reloaded all apps from the market and not applied any backups and yet it still rebooted all the time.
Since then i have tried using
Fusion 3.8
Fusion 3.9
Fusion 4.0
FXP 148
FXP 150
Stock Kernel inside ROM .zip file.
I have also tried putting it back to Baseband 72 but it made no difference.
I then decided to go all the way back to stock firmware as it is out of the box.
so I used flashtool and flashed LT18i_4.1.B.0.587_(1254-2716).ftf
I reloaded my applications and monitored the device only to see that by the next day, the problem had returned.
THIS IS NOT A ROM OR KERNEL ISSUE!!
or at least it isnt for me, but it sounds EXACTLY the same as what everyone here is experiencing
i advise everyone, no matter what ROM or Kernel you are running to try turning off your wifi or even putting the device in airplane mode for a day and monitor
also try running a live logcat
to do this, open a terminal session and type
su
cd sdcard
logcat >> logcat.txt
then leave the terminal running in the background. (you will have the icon in the notification area that tells you its running)
you can then check your sd card and will see logcat.txt file there
you need to open it in wordpad or something of the sort as notepad doesnt display it nicely enough to read
anyone who tries this i would love to hear how it goes
i am curious to see exactly what is causing this but im starting to think it is a hardware issue.
hope this helps!!

It is a problem with battery connection. It is like a fabrique fault with Arc S. You have it explained here:

[Q] Xperia S freezes randomly

Hi everyone.
I'm having a little problem with my Xperia S, it's kind of new (2 weeks of use).
When I'm using normally the cellphone, everything works great, but if don't use it for a long time and I grab it faster and unlocked it, sometimes the cellphone freezes! Well, not exactly freezing, it still works but VERY slowly, almost like freezing. I can't turn it off with power button, I had to user Power + Volume button to turn it off/restart it.
That happened in first week, so I unlocked bootloader and flash it another kernel (advanced stock kernel), and the problem was there.
Later I made a backup of the firmware (I updated to its last version with PC Companion, ICS btw) and flashed a custom ROM (XTXperience 4), and the problem was still there.
Yesterday I flashed a Generic ICS ROM downloaded from XDA Server using Flashtool, everything went normal until today, when the problem happened again.
I've been searching here in XDA and Google and still nothing seems clear of what is causing the problem, if it's the sim card or maybe a hardware problem. I'm going to relock the bootloader today, and I will try to repair the phone using SUS.
What is causing the cellphone to freeze? Hope someone help me with this. Thanks in advance!
btw, sorry about my english, hope you understand most of what I wrote
Well in my experience,
The phone freezes because it is too hot,
Or the RAM memory suddenly drops.
I mean sudden ur phone's RAM memory is 0.
I'm not sure too.
But I think reflashing the kernel, or flash other kernel will fix the problem
Try it
Sent from my LT26i using xda premium
What ics firmware did you flash? And did you do a complete wipe when flashing?
Sent from my Jellybean Xperia S
I've flashed other kernel and yes, I do a complete wipe when I flash another ROM, via Flashtool or CWM.
I've been thinking of rolling back to GB to see what happens.
Yesterday my phone freezes like 2 or 3 times in less than 15 minutes. First time I reboot the phone and it was ok like 5 minutes, then it freezes. I reboot again the phone and happened again.
Its not even hot or using a lot of RAM, it always has like 250 or 200mb free
Did u play with CPU settings?

No, this is happening since the first boot of the phone. When I turned it on the first time it happened, and I had to search how to force a reboot because I didn't know how to do it LOL
It doesn't happen very often, but when it does is very frustrating!
Try flashing a new rom, but wipe the system partition too? I always do that to ensure a fully clean install.

I'm thinking in flashing a non based stock rom, like CM or MIUI, because I flashed XTXperience before and the freezing happened.
Oh, and the problem still exists. I believe Wi-Fi connection maybe it's the problem, I'm testing some things right now.
Had this too using Supercharger (by zep) but after few setting it's gone. Maybe you should try to run the script ?
It was with stock rom and advanced kernel v15/16.L
Well, I was on 6.1.A.2.45, I relocked the bootloader and an update changed the firmware to 6.1.A.2.55 using SUS without wiping data and the problem was still there, so I repaired the phone with SUS, it erased everything and the problem was gone for like 2 days. Today it happened again.

Hi, did you manage to solve the problem? I'm having similar issues like you

Proper GPS fix

I've seen quite a few "flash back to stock, then flash AOSP" fixes to get your GPS working. All you have to do to really fix the GPS is:
1. Backup your stock ROM's EFS through your recovery. (Do NOT wipe prior to doing this.)
2. Wipe
3. Flash AOSP based ROM.
4. Restored your ROM's EFS through your recovery's advanced restore.
Done.

So, I am having a GPS issue that I've been unable to solve through any of the numerous method's posted around XDA (my primary source of all things android) and related sites. It could be a simple solution, but I've exhausted my very limited knowledge and am hoping you have some input or suggestion...
I'm on the LS970 and in an over-caffeinated moment, I fully wiped the stock ROM without a backup. I know that is totally stupid, and have been much more careful with my fingers since then. :silly: I have been unable to get a GPS lock on Spleef's Carbon 4.3 20131020 (or any previous), so tried to factory restore and TWRP flashed a ZV9 ODEX (failed install), ZV7 STOCK (failed install) and SPR-ZVB which flashed successfully but gave me FCs and reboots everytime I opened an app that would get a GPS lock. I have tried the FasterGPS, GPS Status and Toolbox, and edited my GPS.conf. Since I can't get back to factory, I need another way to get to a "factory-enough" for a GPS lock...
Any ideas? I think maybe there's a path/process to follow to be able to go from AOSP to stock that I'm not doing, but I have no idea what it is.
Fingers Crossed!
I was having the same issue with Bean Stalk then carbon also. using the app GPS essentials it would show 0 satellites in the sky even though GPS was enabled.
I flashed the Optimized ROM in the DEV section and this did bring back the GPS functionality.
just an FYI since your stock ROM is gone.

You have SAVED MY WORLD!! HUURAAAAYYYYY!!!!!! :highfive:
The OpTimized ROM was PERFECT in bringing back my GPS, it locked in seconds. It took me a few tries to get it active on Carbon4.3, so I'm going to give my "steps" for successful completion.
I FULL WIPED before flashing OpTimuS_V4.4 (ODEX) - that's Data, System, Dalvik and Cache. (Obvious? I first ran a full TWRP Backup of the system, data, boot)
Then I flashed, booted, and let it go through its process. It took its own "soft reboot" which I thought would turn "Bootloop" but it did NOT... rebooting to the "Semi Stock OpTimuS" perfectly. It did the "Activate" process on its own.
Then - I went to System Updates. PRL first, then Profile. Then the VITAL UPDATES were Google Maps and Play Services.
After this, I rebooted to let it reacquaint, and then installed FasterGPS, using it to clear the current aGPS. Next, installed FreeGee.
Opening the updated Google Maps, I IMMEDIATELY got the lock, but let it sit for 5 minutes. (reset "display time" to 5 minutes to keep track.)
Next - AFTER the GPS locking for 5 minutes, I did a backup of EFS with FreeGee. If you have PREVIOUS BACKUPS on the Internal Storage, they need to be replaced. This can be easily done with ES File Explorer, or any which allow root access. Go to the active (sdcard on LS970) FreeGee, copy the EFS settings, and replace those in the "/0" or Legacy FreeGee folder.
This may be "overkill" but I went back into Google Maps, got a Lock again, let it sit a few minutes and "tested" the navigation function.
While still in Maps, I powered down. Booting into Recovery (I use TWRP), I ran a RESTORE of my TWRP Backup, since the backups aren't "install" compatible. My fear was the "Restore" would override my updates, but when you run it, just "uncheck" EFS in the restore choices and you're :good:.
My LS970 booted up LOVELY, ran its normal boot process, and when I opened Google Maps .... ~*Aaaaaaaahhhhhh~* light from the Heavens! It locked FAST, and the Nav even worked!!
I have been trying to find this Fix for almost TWO MONTHS so I am on Cloud 9 right now!! Thank You @etownguy!!!
GPS locking issue
Hello all,
I am an intermediate novice at flashing, but Ive gained some knowledge over the recent years here and there. Heres the issue, I am running into the same issue as euphoric fuzion except I have exhausted all that I know. I rooted, unlocked bootloader and flashed my ls970 without creating an official Rom backup or backing up my EFS- I know, not bright of me. After using my new roms I realized that MY GPS isnt locking. So, Ive done everything from writing new NPS locations in gps.conf, attempting to go back to stock via LGNPST-Ive used the auto option, Flash tool and they dont seem to recognize my phone via download mode but the drivers are installed-pc recognizes. One flash tool actually recognizes my phone as another model. Ive tried to flash stock based Roms-one ins particular at no suceess-symlink failure. Attempted to flash ZVC stock based Rom with Firmware flash- the phone remains in bootloop from my previous ROM. In order to use the phone I have to reinstall CM11- my fav for now- but I cannot lock my GPS with out SPrints PRL update, or network update for my profile. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance

Downgraded from 4.4.4 to 4.2, reverted back and no WIFI, tried everything!

Well, I followed an XDA thread to SIM unlock the M919. It involved downgrading from 4.4.4 to 4.2. and I successfully unlocked my device! But now I have no Wifi... I tried flashing every single modem, every firmware (Official TW ones via Odin, every custom rom using TWRP). They flashed well and everything worked besides the Wifi. I've found some threads from people with the exact same problem (they tried to unlock it using the same method) but those are old threads with no solution.
I've spent 24hrs reading and flashing and wiping and reading again. Any ideas?
Many thanks!
Anyone? If you find me a solution I will Paypal you 20 bucks!

I am having the same issue. My phone was already unlocked though, so no downgrading on my part, but I think we're having the same issue. Is yours showing connected, but usually getting time outs or disconnecting?
My issue happened when I flashed from stock 4.2 to the GPE rom for 5.1. Wi-fi issues. Connected, but exclamation point saying that my connection wasn't working. So I flashed a different rom (candy) and still, I have issues. So I went back to 4.2, stock everything. Stock bootloader, stock rom, stock radio. Still had issues. So I decided maybe flashing a new radio would work, so I flashed NH7 and NK2 (broke my audio). Still didn't work. Realized my bootloader doesn't match the modem, so I flashed 4.4.4 stock bootloader and stock NK2 modem. Tried it with the candy rom. No go. I tried the 4.4.4 stock ROM, wifi still has that stupid exclamation point. I've even gone so far as flashing both the bootloader and the radio over 5 times in one go (with battery pull each time) to see if that will work (starting to go nuts, I guess), but still, no fix.
I've had a temporary fix with Tasker (Connect2wifi), but it doesn't work when my phone is on idle, so I don't get any notifications until I actually wake up my phone.
I'm starting to wonder if it's the physical wifi radio (antenna) inside my phone that's broken. But then I wouldn't be able to connect at all if that's the case, right?

No, unfortunately my issue is very different. I know it isn't hardware related. I've never had any issues with it until the second I downgraded. Wifi just doesn't turn on. When I click on the button it just tries to turn on and after a couple seconds it turns back off, without even detecting any networks. This happens no matter what rom, version of android or modem I use. Downgraded, upgraded, tested every single modem and rom via TWRP and Odin.
