I've had my Galaxy W for just over a year. Whilst I was running the stock ROM I would more or less get a full day out of the battery. I upgraded rooted my device and installed the Cyanogen CM9 rc2 ROM. I don't recall any battery problems at first, but just over a week ago it started draining within five or six hours. This happened every day for a week.
Since then I have uninstaleld all apps (apart from Google Authenticator which I couldn't manage without), turned off wifi, bluetooth and everything else I could think of. Now I seem to be getting about 36 hours out of the battery... Although I think it goes from 35% down to 10% very, very quickly.
Leaving all data connections off and having no apps is okay in the short term, but is there a long term software solution?

Not immediately, but about a week later. Is it worth going through that process again?
Edit:
This is the app that I used:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.nema.batterycalibration&hl=en
Before I uninstalled any apps I downloaded and installed CPU Spy. Here are two screenshots taken with CPU spy.
I could reinstall it now without any other apps installed, if that will help?
I don't know enough about this, but I expected that the phone would spend a higher percentage of it's time in 'deep sleep' than that.

That should have been right. I don't know what is happening with your deep sleep, although your phone is on for 16 hrs but the deep sleep only reach not almost half of it. Did you use your phone often?

On the occasions shown, I used it some, but not a lot. There have been occasions where the battery has gone from full to flat in five hours, with the phone only being used for 5 minutes.

Interesting.. how about you check on the battery is it bloating or not?
For battery problem is either the phone calibrated wrong readings on the battery or the battery it self is the problem.
If you use your phone not too often but the deep sleep only reach 34% of the time then some apps is preventing the deep sleep, try to check what apps is that causes that with some battery stats app, try search it in xda or market

I've gone for Battery Stats Plus. I'll reenable wifi, bluetooth and 3G for a few days and see what happens. If that takes a toll on the battery I will post back with details from Battery Stats Plus.
I will also take the battery out later to inspect it.
Update:
My battery had 15-20% remaining and I turned it off, and tried to turn it back on. It now thinks that it does not have enough power to boot the phone. I don't know if that new information is helpful or not.

With 15 - 20% it should have boot, because it still have juice left. What about your battery physics? Is it bloating or just normal?

Took the battery out this morning for a proper look. There's definitely some bloating. Time to get looking for a replacement battery?
Could there be two issues here? As from the screenshots I posted the phone doesn't seem to have spent a lot of time in deep sleep.
I was just watching a YouTube video, with about 70% battery. The phone turned off, and when I've turned it back on it's gone down to 2%.
Could this be down to an improperly calibrated battery, or is it purely down to the physical damage/bloating to the battery?

most probably you suffer wrong calibrated battery problem , I think
sorry I didnt see your first post (about bloating) :/ , definetely you should buy a new battery
Thanks for your advice.
I'm going to install Battery Calibration by Nema from Google Play. I'll see how I get on with that.
I'm going to order a replacement battery this week. I'm looking for a direct replacement, with an official Samsung battery. I have posted here in the Accessories forum. I hope that was the right place to put it.
After I install the CM10 alpha 6 conform to the first post, the battery life of my cellphone has been drained very fast - 21% about 6 hours and half.
Can anyone help me, please? I already did the battery calibration and I can't see effects. I'm wondering if is better install CM 9 or just go back to the android 2.3.6 factory version of my cellphone.

Your battery is bloated? Then you *must* replace it. Period.
A damaged battery is the root cause of myriads of problems. Until that battery is replaced, you _will_ experience all kinds of annoyances, no matter what ROM/Kernel you're using, including inexplicable battery drain.

hi guys,
sorry i'm noob and this is second time im posting on xda forum. I recently bought a Galaxy Nexus Made in korea by samsung. It's currently running on 4.3 latest update phone doesn't lagg or nothing happend like crashes etc but please see below major problems im facing.
Phone getting hotter from back side where camera is installed
0 to 100% it take 5-7 hours to charge ( I tried both wall and USB)
I charged the phone to 100% in night and i didn't use the phone night in morning when i check the phone the batter was at only 12% left. the phone eat all the battery in 7 hours the most battery was used by phone idle 57% and stand by 33% & i didn't put any sim card in the phone whole night and automatic wifi was on which was only 17% battery.
again i charged the phone to 100% close the automatic wifi and insert a sim card
The result is like
After 3 hours 57 mins battery was at 52%
Screen take 49% total screen on time 16m 1s
Phone Idle 22% 3h 41m 29s
cell stand by 10% 3h 54m 55s
Android system 5% (CPU TOTAL 1m 47s *** CPU foreground 33s *** Keep awake 1m 19s)
I don't know what was the battery time before 4.3 update becuz when i buy this set it came with 4.3 and i bought this 3 days ago. Is this a battery problem or the phone problem or its the android ???? any type of help is welcome
Thanks in advance
The Galaxy Nexus is known for its not so great battery. It also just depends on how you use it. If you are playing games, watching videos, etc. it will drain fast. If you just check a few things here and there, it will last longer. That's common sense. But yes, compared to other phones, the Galaxy Nexus sucks with battery. Theres not much you can really do software wise. The best thing you can do is get a bigger battery or a spare battery. I have a charger pretty much wherever I am so battery isnt an issue for me. But if you are someone who is on the move all day, I would suggest a spare or an extended battery.
EDIT: Actually, looking at your screen time, you are getting a bit above average on phone idle. Right now, my phone idle is at 8%

Yes i read that and i planned to get extended battery but the cell eating the battery while screen is off. I'm just confused about the OS 4.3 i read alot about that after updating to 4.3 nexus 7 user experiencing of slow charging and battery draining but as you seen in attached pic the phone eating battery without any usage the total on screen time is 6 min and in 3hrs 57 min 48% battery gone ?? so in your opinion what is the prob is it OS, phone or the battery ?

Well I see in your screenshots that it looks like you don't have any cell service. What could be happening is that your phone is constantly searching for a connection, which could eat up a lot of battery.
best bet

youre best bet if rooted and unlocked is to install a custon kernel and underclock it to about 1000 mhz ... install dark themed apps or theme chooser theme also us a black wallpaper .. turn off 4g . ... turn off nfc when not in use .. make sure youre using the oem charger to charge the battery .. use wifi whenever possible .. also turn off anything like hotword detection that is constantly listening

The mobile service was on but data service was disable i received 2 calls and some texts msgs 2 but they are not long or didn't took the battery. All syncs were off and location to. But the battery is going down very badly. Please see new attached files of last night. The cell was at 87% battery and in the morning the battery was dead.
Try using something like Better Battery Stats or GSAM and see what they say is draining your battery.
With the current info given, I would lean toward thinking it is a hardware issue. Perhaps your battery doesn't properly hold a charge anymore.

Few hours ago i left for office the cell was on 14% charging and turn-off the cell and put it in pocket. After 1 hour when i reach to office i was trying to turn on the cell but the battery was dead and then i put it on charging and it start from 6% and turned on. I think the battery is not holding charging . The battery is in made in Korea and have NFC details on it. I think its the original battery but its not use able any more. i will try above mentioned widgets before changing the battery.

didn't use the phone and it ate all battery. Any guesses what's wrong with the phone???

4g/3g are off and i ticked use only 2G network. Facebook app is deleted brightness is set to auto GPS every thing is off but mobile consuming battery without any usage.... im just confuse about that its the hardware prob or i have to flash some other rom?
bump! any 1 with solution ?
U really need to get better battery stats. It will tell u specifically what wake locks r causing the problem. Idk if using only 2g is a good idea, u may be burning battery with apps constantly searching for a data connection. Can u access wifi? That takes up less battery than data (3g or 4g). U may want to buy a new battery, they aren't that expensive. U can get one on amazon for like $15. If that doesn't work, I'd try flashing a different rom, maybe even a custom kernel.
I am still running 4.1.2 because I like it better than the newer versions and my battery life isn't bad. I usually get close to 2.5hrs of screen on time. More than a day of standby. Obviously, if I make a lot of calls I will get less battery life. I'm running eclipse rom with leankernel.

Today i flashed Cyanogen mode 10.1.3. i didnt flashed any google apps just to check what eat battery. When i flashed the ROM the battery was at 36%. I used the mobile for almost 1 hour and on screen time was 54min 37sec and battery left 16%. The cell eat total 20% battery in 1 hour continues on without mobile data network and 2G was on. Wifi GPS every thing was off and brightness was set to auto. At 16% battery i stop using mobile and after 30 mins i check mobile it eat 6% battery in 30 min without any usage. then i truns off the phone and after 30 mins i tried to turn on the cell the battery was dead. then i plugged in the charger and i turn the cell on. The battery charge start from 10% but instead of charging i start loosing battery. then i charged for almost 1 hour on 0% battery and took 5 hours to fully charged. My cell phone drain all battery over night under the usage of phone idle 73%. I'm just confuse about that its the battery issue or its cell phone problem. and my phone getting very hot from back left side. I just need a good developer advise if this is hardware issue then i'm gonna replace the cell phone and if its the battery issue and hardware is ok then i will get a new battery and continue using and 1 more thing my phone get little hot even its turned off from back left side and sim jacket side.
Bump! any suggestion ?
I doubt a developer can answer that question. Could be phone, could be battery. I would try a, new battery just cuz it's cheaper than a new phone. Maybe go back to stock and see if that helps. If not, call Verizon and complain, they may send u a refurbished unit.

ok i will try it currently i flashed the 4.1.2 and flashing a custom kernel for battery saving i will post result soon. and I'm also having slow charging issue like my cell charged to full in 5-6 hours.
Hi guys,
Ihad posted earlier after taking the 4.3 update that my phone started to behave irregularly.
So, on the advice presented, i did a factory reset.
Phone behaves just fine but the horrible battery life still persists.
My battery level drops 40% in 5 hours. On 4.1.2, i could go 8 hours and still have 70% battery.
Is there something in 4.3 that drains the battery faster?
i am on stock, unrooted.
Should i reflash knox free/lorjay's rom to see if that brings my battery life back to what it used to be?
Any and all replies are much appreciated.

I have noticed the same - 4.3 is a battery drain. the newest stuff never really works right on older phones, kinda wish i could go back.
I agree. My phone drains like crazy now and it takes like 5 hours to charge from 50 to 100%. I don't know what 4.3 did but I want my 4.1.2 back. My phone lasted 17 to 21 hours with the same use I do now. I now get about 10.
this is getting ridiculous...
my phone never goes into deep sleep anymore according to wake lock detector.
i want my battery life back.
how do i downgrade to 4.1.2??
Hello
I am currently on stock rooted rom on 4.4.2. I never bothered updating since it served my purposes of watching movies.
I need to gift my nexus to someone I know, so wanted to update and unroot before giving. Would anyone please tell me how the performance and battery life is on 6.0.1 stock (will be used unrooted most likely)? I have the Wifi 2013 nexus 7
I understand it may be too obvious of an answer butI searched the thread but could not find an answer. Been away from xda for a long time. Good to be back!
I have owned my Nexus 7 since Christmas it came with 6.0.1 Marshmallow installed and I am very happy with the performance and battery life. I don't know how it compares with an n7 running 4.4.2 but I have had plenty of android devices in the past 5 years all rooted etc so know good from bad. Just be aware that some n7 owners have had issues with firmware updates leading to bricked tablets. I would say go for it, do a full wipe first though and maybe use the excellent Nexus Root Toolkit by Wugfresh. Enjoy.
Pretty Great!
I am not running stock. I am on Commotio by TeamVanir and I get 1-2% discharge on standby during 12-16hours and when I am using it and watching youtube over wifi or just general browsing on reddit and google plus or chrome I get around 5-7hrs of SOT. My tablet is around 2 years old now and I used to charge once every 3 days so its battery is also not what it used to be when it was new.
Stock rooted, I use about 8%/hour (reading, internet connected, dim screen), about 10%/hour browsing the web, dim screen). I routinely let it sit on a Qi charger when not it use, so can't comment on the standby time. Subjectively, much better than I saw on KK.
I just updated mine recently to Marshmallow from Kit Kat as well. I had an issue on 6.0.1 with standby battery drain being about %10 overnight, even though it appeared to enter doze correctly. I couldn't identify any wakelocks that accounts for this drain.
I switched to 6.0.0 and it's much better now, completely same settings and apps. Overnight, it's probably a 1.5% loss, if that. Overall, battery performance is improved. But for me, 6.0.1 didn't work out. Not quite sure why.

When you flash a new build you have to wait for a couple of charge recharge cycles until it correctly displays the battery. On a different ROM normally i lose 1% per hour on standby but after just updating and for the first few cycles even in dozd I loose more than 10% and sometimes even 50% during the night but it settles down after a charge cycle.

Good information, thanks! I had already given it a couple weeks and few discharges, but I'd be willing to try again and hope it will work itself out.
But is the performance better or worse? And is rooting / unlocking still no problem?
So I am loving my new Pixel 2 XL, but i have noticed my battery life isn't nearly as what i see on the review forms. like with light usage only 2 hours of being unplugged, im at 77%. I came from my nexus 6 and transferred all my apps from it so it might be an app sucking my battery life? i don't know. any suqqestions would be good. I am rooted with magisk with the GMS Doze addon to try to help with this problem
It could be anything. At least with the root access, you can get many decent apps to track the apps that may be causing this. The battery on my 2 XL (stock) has been spectacular so far. I was a little bit worried that 8.1 may change that, but seems like it is even better now. For the first time in years, I am not worried about the battery at all. Even if I forget to charge overnight, I am OK going to work with about 40% of battery as I know I can get home with still something left in it. The only reason why I often check battery stats is because I still can't believe what is going on.
I am. Getting great battery life also rooted

I personally had worse results when I tried to tweak doze. Greenify also made things worse. My best results are leaving everything alone.
i think im gonna give it a few charge cycles before i do anything. i havent let this phone die yet, and i think the culprit might also be the life360 app.

I agree with this and I remember similar findings on the OG Pixel XL. I'd start by disabling the doze tweaking apps and see how it goes.

Check which app is draining the battery. My brother's unit for some reason had Google Play service draining 46% of the battery. After I flashed back to factory (without wiping) and enrolled the phone into beta program for the service. That worked out for him. (version 8.0 November patch)
My battery life has taken a significant hit since going to 8.1. No new apps (a few app updates through) but it is a noticeable difference from just a week ago. It's still impressive, but prior to 8.1 I would be at 70-75 at this point in the day with around 2 hours screen-on time, currently at 60% with only 1.5 hours screen-on time. I just got super spoiled for about a month or so with absolutely incredible battery life. Now, I have to live with "just" very good battery life.
First-world problems.

I personally had worse results when I tried to tweak doze. Greenify also made things worse. My best results are leaving everything alone.

That's my experience as well. I haven't done anything to tweak my phone to try and get better battery life. I'm 100% stock. No unlocked bootloader. No root. Just out of the box. I'm getting 7-9 hours SOT over 24-32 hours depending on what I'm doing.
What I have noticed with 8.0 it use to drain a lot slower the first 30 to 40%, then it will drain faster, in 8.1 it is more consistent, I still average 7 to 8% SOT per hour and .3% an hour when screen is off. The phone still last 2 days with 7 to 8 hours SOT and I will be at around 25 to 20% still available. I had the phone since Oct. 20th and based on Accubattery I have charged it only 25 times in total
Remember that they fixed how battery life is calculated with the update. Also, you can looks under Background check under developer settings to stop specific apps from running in the background

That's some heavy battery drain, mine wasn't that bad, but close. If you spend most of your day somewhere with a weak mobile signal, try switching off "Mobile data always active" from Developer options. My office has very bad signal, and by switching off that setting, my battery improved a little bit. Nothing major, but it was noticeable.
Mine has changed noticeably, though not anything enough for me to be concerned in my daily use. Still getting 7 hrs SOT, just less stand-by time.

I rooted mine for like 2 weeks. I ended up relocking the bootloader and unrooting it. It just runs better that way.
This was me leaving it screen off unplugged for half the night and I can tell you right away the walelocks don't look right but I can't figure out what. https://imgur.com/a/SPIdL
I'm getting 7 hrs of SOT consistently. Not even close to sub par for me. That's heavy use as well.
I've noticed that many times people with poor battery life transferred everything from another phone. It seems like a crap shoot compared to starting fresh. Pre and post 8.1 I'm getting 6 to 7 hrs sot using around 55% brightness and mostly lte.
Seems like a lot of people are experiencing battery drain from Google Play services 11.9.51 (including myself).

So i factory resetted and reinstalled all my apps and stuff and still not getting good battery life. in 30 minutes from a full charge i was down to like 85% and that was just from listening to music
i cant tell what is causing it besides probably Google Play Services, so i enabled Doze on it via magisk, and still nothing. i highly doubt it's a defective battery
