Good Morning to all:
I am very new to the Android world and I finally installed the excellent AOKP Mod bt Task & Ktoonsez. I am enjoying it a lot.
Today we got an update that I would like to install. I understand that I need to wipe data, cache, davik, etc to install the update, but my question is.
Is there a way I can save/keep my data and restore it after the installation of the new rom?
Thanks and I am sorry for my level of noobness.

So I have a question , I'm currently on 110722 Nightly Jordan, and I'm planning on going to the newest 110729 Nightly Jordan.
Now, what are the steps that should I take?
should I upgrade to either the BOOT 179-4 / BOOTSEA first? or I could just flash to 110729?
thanks for your help
just flash 110729 Nightly as u flash normally..no special steps required..
one more question, to upgrade, we firstly need to wipe data, wipe cache and wip dalvik cache right?
can anyone tell me what does this three steps do? (as in wiping data, you're deleting something, .........)
thanks
do not wipe anything..u can wipe cache but never wipe data..wiping data will result in deleting everything u have ever installed in ur phone..like apps and all..and wiping cache is also not required..but it is ok if u wipe cache..
oh thank you arpith
so if I don't need to wipe data, then I don't need to use titanium backup right? as none of the apps are deleted
yep..no need of titanium backup..it will be as it is..only system files will be updated..
Can you tell us if you haver wifi problem with the new nighty ?
I went back to the latest SEA because of that

my wi-fi is working great actually, no loss at speed or sudden DCs.
the one thing that I'm worried is my camera.
somehow, the images that it produce are really bad, it doesn't force closes, but the quality of image is very poor (already on max settings) , both on photos and videos.
any solutions?
I am currently using CM9 on my GNex because it has a built-in Profiles management application in Settings.
Is this feature exclusive to CM? Do other ROMs have this feature? I have tried various market apps to replicate this functionality, but none of them seem to work the way the CM9 one does.
I thought I had seen someone using AOKP and it had this in his Settings, but when I tried to Flash that ROM, I got a ton of errors on reboot and didn't find Profiles in the Settings section either.
Also, as I am relatively new to Android (this is my first Android device), should I do a complete wipe data before installing a totally different ROM to avoid process errors? I am using Clockwork Mod recovery to flash ROMs and just performing the default "wipe Dalvik cache" before installing a new ROM. So far, the only ROM I am able to install/update is CM9. AOKP and Codename Android just gave me a ton of process errors after booting and were just unusable. As such, i am currently stuck using CM9, but have really bad wifi performance with it.
TIA!

Yes. Yes Yes Yes Yes. ALWAYS do a full data wipe when moving from one ROM to another ROM. You can sometimes get away with not wiping if you are simply upgrading to a newer version of the same ROM, but anytime that you run into issues after installing a new ROM please do make sure that you wiped data before posting/complaining about issues.
Thank you for your clarification. The next time I try a completely different ROM I will do a full data wipe. I assume flashing new Nightlies of the ROM I am already running doesn't require a full data wipe?
But can you or anyone else tell me if AOKP or any other ROMs have the "Profiles" feature in Settings, like CM9 does? Or is this exclusive to the CM9 ROM?
Thanks again.

I haven't seen it anywhere else, though AOKP does offer a Quiet Hours option.
THANK YOU!
Using your suggestion to do a wipe data when flashing a rom, I downloaded the latest CM9 nightly, and just installed it wiping both the data and cache.
After my initial setup and installing the speedtest app, my ping is back to normal at ~25ms and 15mb down and 2 up!
Do you always (or recommend) wipe the data even if you are just updating the current ROM?
Hopefully one of my other apps wasn't the cause of this issue, but I'll soon find out once I have re-installed everything.
Thanks again.

The ROM developer will usually state in the changelog / release notes if a wipe is required/recommended for an upgrade. Rule of thumb though:
1) Updating ROM to newer version, same Android release (ex: 4.0.3 -> 4.0.3) ==> No wipe
2) Updating ROM to newer version, different Android release (ex: 4.0.3 -> 4.0.4) ==> WIPE
3) Changing from one ROM to another ROM (CM9 -> AOKP) ==> WIPE
Interesting. After reinstalling my apps one by one, I've been running speedtest and found that Airsync/Doubletwist is the cause of my slowness. Uninstalling and rebooting fixes the speed/ping issue right away. Glad I bought this app. Not.
Question. I just rooted my phone and I wanna install CM10. I downloaded the latest nightly build and the Gapps. Can I go straight to running a nightly build with this being the first one im running? I ask because I got like 10 different answer from friends and I figure someone here knows the correct answer.
Yes you can. Just make sure you follow all instructions and read the OP (wipe system, data, cache & dalvik). Make sure you have a custom recovery installed as well, I'm sure you do since your rooted but just in case.

Do a full wipe cache/ dalvik cache/ factory reset /system /day.
Then install both cm10 and gapps reboot system then enjoy!
Rooted Evo dead
Rooted Evo shift dead
Rooted Galaxy s3 alive and well!
Yep, you can... a nightly is a full build, it's not a differential or anything that requires a previous CM to be installed first. Wipe and install as per instructions as others have said, no problem.
Hello, all,
Apologies if this is a noob-ish question, but I could really use some assistance here. After installing kennyglass123's People's ROM v3.1 without incident, upon reboot, I get stuck in the boot screen (in this case, the black and white spiral). Only solution--that I know of--is to restore from nandroid backup to get back to previous ROM.
Is there some sort of app conflict that I'm coming up against? I ask because I had previously, successfully installed it back in early Feb, and it worked great, and then after a reboot after some app updates, it got stuck.
Love the ROM...want to get it to work again!
Appreciate it,
For faster help, you should post this queation in the peoples rom thread.. For now if you want to try and fix it do this.. I wipe cache, delvik cache, factory reset, and system. Flash rom agin, wipe cache again, reboot.. Remember it can take a while for the system to fully boot..
Yes, as said above, make sure you are wiping EVERYTHING. The system can take long to boot as well depending on how large the OS you flashed is. Additionally, multiple wipes dont hurt either, especially if you are flashing a different android version (ICS to JB)
Make sure to always format system, clear data (might say factory restore), clear cache, and clear dalvik cache (rinse and repeat to be safer), then flash your rom of choice

As everyone above stated, make sure your doing a complete clean install. TPR uses Aroma Installer and make sure you make all the right selections, and choose a kernel during the whole process.

Been running TPR since the OG days.. As with flashing ANY rom, Do a Full data wipe, cache clear, dalvik clear (couple times if you prefer) make sure you select a kernel in the Aroma process. Should be back in business. Always can post in the TPR thread for most help available tho, The People are always ready and willing to help out where we can! Let us know if there is anything else that happens.
Hi Guys,
Total Newb, can't flash new 5.1 OTA over the Alpha release. It won't flash on TWRP even the latest version now doing a bit of reading I apparently have to delete my data, cache and dalvik, so my question is there a way to update without losing all my apps and settings??
Thanks in advance!
As mentioned in the announcement by the legacy team, you have to wipe data.
Use titanium backup, backup all your user data, wipe, update, restore MISSING user apps+data in titanium backup
#stayparanoid
Thanks for the response, as someone who has never backed up my apps and data am I OK to restore data backed up on one ROM back onto another different ROM??
I can say that this worked however as a warning for other users my gapps version which I restored was not the correct version for the new ROM so it forced closed all the time, flagging the new gapps version made it worse, thankfully only a clear cache and data was needed along with closing and restarting the download manager hope this helps someone.

Don't restore gapps.
Use the gapps zip package and install whatever gapps you need from the play store. You can never carry over settings from gapps anyway, well reliably anyway
Thanks for replying, wish I'd known earlier would have saved me some turmoil.
