I have a friend with a Mac computer and he has a galaxy nexus phone verizon. I was looking for an easy way to root and unlock his phone.
I noticed the Gnex toolkit does not work with Mac. He wants to install Jellybean on his phone. I was able to find a site that he can install Jellybean on his unrooted phone but I can't find a file to download it with. It says to download ClockworkMod but I need an app to open it with after I downloaded it. Also doesn't clockworkmod only work on rooted phones? I am open to all suggestions.

This will show you how to unlock your bootloader, load up JB, and even root.
Use Efrant's link above. The commands are all the same on a Mac, except you use Terminal instead of Command Prompt, you don't have to deal with drivers and the commands have "./" in front of them. For example:
Code:
./adb devices

So, I've got myself the amazing G2, and I'm loving it to bits. But, I was browsing around and saw that a DEV was able to port the Desire Z's ROM to a G2, and I love me some sense. I want to be able to get that sense-filled-goodness on my G2, but doing it so safely. I really don't feel like sending my phone in to get replaced. I've never bricked a phone before, and I wanna keep it that way. So, can anyone give me some step by step instructions on how to complete a ROM flash? It would be much appreciated. thank you!
You root with this....

is a nice ROM too
Now, explain ABD and SDK in laymens terms? And is this proceedure safe?
Well. I really can't explain sdk and adb. It allows your computer to communicate with your phone, which is needed to run many commands. The commands you input in terminal emulator can also be entered to your phone using the command prompt of your computer.
It was ***** for me to learn how to use on my computer but after many youtube videos and question was able to get it running.

I wanted to know what is the easiest way to root Sprint Galaxy 4G. I've tried the Super One Click Root App and it keeps getting hung up on waiting for device. I read that i had to download drivers, and i had a question about that. Is it referring to the device drivers for the phone once i plug it into the computer, or is there some other special drivers i have to download. I rooted my Eris, and want to root my friends Galaxy 4G, but it's not the same method. Also how do you get into recovery on the Galaxy 4G.
Please let me know the easiest way to root. He doesn't want a custom rom, just the root.
First stop is to the Wiki page. Then read a guide or two. Also utilize the search feature in threads and the advanced search for more broad searching.
You need the Samsung drivers for the phone. They can be found in the guides or directly off Samsung's website.
I've done that. I installed drivers. I followed step by step for the "super one click app" and it gets hung up on waiting for device. All the other methods sound confusing. One says to install drivers than it states to run "run.bat"! I don't even know where this is or anything.
The run bat is in the folder where you extracted everything, its a windows batch file i believe. Also if you are having issues with the computer seeing your phone try using different ports or even a different cable.

Does anyone know a good step by step for going from yakjuux to yakju on a mac? I'm also with Rogers, I heard that there are some Yakju issues with Rogers. Would it work or would I have to flash baseband? I've only ever used an iphone and recently moved to Android this is all new to me. I have never done android flashing before so this before but it seems like this is the way to go for updates. Any assistance would be amazing.
cheers.
Try this and/or this. Provided your mac is set up correctly to use adb and fastboot-mac, then its just executing commands from the ROM shell script after unlocking the bootloader.
Also, in case you don't know, unlocking the bootloader will wipe all your data.
There are also a few threads that discuss this. So a search again may be helpful.

Yes, that is another way to do it. It comes down to what the OP is comfortable with.....But I would honestly do it via the mac as my first choice, esp. if starting from scratch. I have seen a few posts with windows users suffering from usb driver issues, samsung naked driver installs and then fastboot not recognising their phones...Of course if you set it all properly, then it will work there as well, but on a mac the (adb and fastboot-mac) setup is more of an unzipping and environment variable setting exercise and therefore simple I would say.
s1977, thank you so much for your help. Could you please help me a little more though? I'm from the realm of iphone and new to all of this. I think I have everything setup but I could use (and I'm sure many mac users ) could use a detailed step by step on how to do this. Like what to get from the SDK manager? where to put the Yakju file so that it installs on the GNex? etc. also, which of these do I grab?
Android 4.0.1 (ITL41D)
Android 4.0.1 (ITL41F)
Android 4.0.2 (ICL53F)
can i go straight to - Android 4.0.2 (ICL53F)? and where do I put this file once it's downloaded?
I know, lots to ask. I just want to be sure that I'm doing it right.

Can you first try this and let me know where you're at?
In summary, the SDK download is a unzip to a directory of your choosing, then set the necessary path and then download fastboot-mac and stick it into the sdk/tools directory.
Once the above is completed, then you need to check that it works. Also you'll see that some people suggest copying the ROMs in the tools directory. While that is convenient, I wouldn't suggest that being best practice. In my case, I have the tools folder in my mac path and so i can execute fastboot-mac and adb from anywhere.
Try this to confirm before proceeding further:
1. Execute adb devices after connecting your phone (set the usb debugging checkbox to checked in the developer options area in settings on your phone first). If you see a phone listed, then this is working allright.
2. Execute adb reboot bootloader. This will reboot the phone into bootloader mode. Now execute fastboot-mac devices. If you still see your phone here, then your fastboot is also working.
If you get both the above steps working, then you are done and can move on to flashing the ROMs you want.
As with going straight to ICL53F, yes you can do that. These are complete patches, not incremental updates and so this is fine. In my case, I unzip the ROM into its own directory first. Then from that directory, you'd unlock the bootloader, then flash the commands individually or use the flash_all.sh script (after replacing fastboot with fastboot-mac or rename your fastboot-mac to fastboot, either way). Once done, then lock the bootloader again. Just remember that the phone needs to be in bootloader mode for fastboot to do anything to it and you can enter bootloader by pressing Vol plus + minus + power from a switched off state or alternatively via the adb reboot bootloader method I suggested above...
I will definitely suggest playing with adb and fastboot a bit prior to starting to flash. See what options do what and that you'll be more comfortable with getting it to work. In my experience the Nexus devices are good for these types of activities as the bootloader can be locked/unlocked quite easily. In any case if something fails, then we are all here to help!
Also remember, flashing the ROM will delete all the data on the phone, so backup before.
Update @ 14:55 GMT
I just remembered one thing and its about the baseband for your phone. if your current baseband is optimised/specific for your carrier/Canada, then it may be worth keeping a backup/re-installing that as against the yajku baseband. See this. Search the forums first for any experiences esp. against the current baseband that you have or maybe that works in Canada. I would worry if the global baseband doesn't work well for you and you have no way of going back. A backup of the radio or at least the current details of your device configuration is a minimum should you need to flash specific components again (about phone page).
Read this in order to pre-empt any issues with the move.
My GN is the yakjuxw build so naturally I'd like to get on the Google bandwagon.
However I can't say that I've seen many posts from yakjuxw build owners that have flashed to 41D (or 41F) & confirmed they received OTA updates.
Will it update?
Im with telus and am looking to do the same thing on a mac. Completely new to the android world. But im loving it so far!
Ive been following the directions, trying to get yakju, and Im stuck at the bash profile bit… I was following a youtube video showing it (not allowed to post a link yet) and it leaves that bash portion out. However that did not work for me either the terminal said "permission denied" or "no such file or directory"
Anyone help me out?
video was titled "How to Unlock Verizon Galaxy Nexus bootloader on a Mac!"
I have a Droid Charge right now and I'm planning on getting a Google Nexus as soon as I have some time to go up to the store to actually get the phone.
But the question I have is, how do I root it? The Verizon LTE version. Because... it simply comes down to this; if I can't root it, I don't want it.
With the manual way. The adb way. Or the fast boot way. I also seen this on Droid-Life yesterday and it seems like one of those quick "one click root" methods. I never tried it so I don't know. Here's the link

I found this...

I'm assuming that that's what I need to root this beast?
Also... do I have to unlock the bootloader? I've never had to unlock a bootloader, the Droid Charge which I have right now didn't have a locked bootloader.

You have to unlock the bootloader by setting up ADB after installing the android SDK to your computer. There are a ton of step by step guides for this but it is super easy and requires only one command after the set up is complete "fastboot OEM unlock" then I recommend using the CF-Root method that also has the guide here on XDA. The CF-Root method is also on command and basically just adds root to your stock rom.

So you don't recommend using the method in the forum thread I mentioned?
I already have ADB installed on my computer and have used it multiple times to do shell-related stuff and to push/pull files.
I would use regular ADB command prompts. Download and install the Samsung drivers and go to town. The only thing you may experience is after you install the drives and start ADB command if it hangs on waiting for device you need to go into device manager on you computer and you should see your phone listed with a yellow question mark or exclamation point. You need to select it and manually install the drivers from there. Still a piece a cake and the must fool proof way to go.

use the post that you found, if you have driver problems install PDAnet. It will work like a charm, just make sure you read all the way through first then start again from the beginning and do it step by step. Don't need to bother with adb anymore that the rootkit is out, its quick and easy and a great tool if your not comfortable with ADB
Edit: Also not to be a jerk, but you really should just search the development forum instead of cluttering the forums. You found the answer yourself.
I used the GNex Toolkit found on the development forum.
GSM Version: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1392310
LTE / CDMA Version: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1400871
Really simple and easy to use. It does it all for you. All you have to do is know what current build your phones running, by going into Settings->About Phone.
Load it up, select build version, hit the Unlock,Root,Recovery option.
I'd recommend you do this immediately, as unlocking the bootloader wipes your phone.
Alright so I currently don't have a PC.
And iv already messed around with trying to root with non legit apps
Now I know there's a way to to adb side load over wifi
Using another device using the terminal. I just can't find a legit guide to get me threw the process of being able to connect the 2 devices threw the emulator terminal.
I haven't rooted since back when untouched 3g was out. And then I was a proud owner of the oneplus one so there was no need to root.
I'm looking to root unlock bootloader get custom recovery the whole deal. Just need the correct way to connect to adb without PC
